They have them in italy. But not in the liberal snowflake country that is canada.
I used to ask random people on the street for their ID card so I could buy a pack of cigarettes. I'd say the bulk of the people were more than happy to oblige. Some drunk execs even refused to allow me to pay for the cigs and got me a few packs for free. The Japanese are the best people ever :)

would random people give their ID to a 18-19 foreigner ? in my country i can buy my cigarettes legally and could buy them no problem even under 18, but im now in japan for 1 month so i was wondering if there was any way of getting cigarettes in japan if im under 20

I'm from Germany and we have cigarette vending machines absolutely everywhere. You can be in the middle of nowhere and you will find it near a field or forrest, it's crazy. You need a debit card to verify your age and after you can pay via cash or also with the debit card.
Pretty easy for kids to get their parents debit card

Fun fact about Lark, they use a special charcoal in their filter and the filter somehow filters out more carcinogens, it has been proposed as the most "healthy" cigarette on the market, probably that's the reason why so many people in Iapan smoke them, another fun fact about Lark is that they're being smoked in Baki Hanma (2018).
I remember helping some European tourists in Japan trying to buy smokes from a machine and I explained to them about needing a card and took them to a smoke shop near by.

In Germany we have something similar, although they are much smaller, don't have the biggest selection and are often not refilled regularly or at all. They are called "Zigarettenautomaten" and they are fairly common on sidewalks in front of apartment buildings.
Well now I got one more reason to go to Germany 💪💪 Gonna have to see if I can get me an ID that works with them though 😂

i don’t think we’ve had cig vending machines atleast since the 80s here in the U.S. pretty much every bar (pub) rid them, as they were the last establishments to have them

This is so fascinating to see how common Mevius is in these vending machines.
The only cigarette vending machine I ever saw was in a petrol station in Spain last year. Unlike these ones, you don't need a drivers license to activate it. What you need to do is ask the shopkeeper for the cigarettes you want, and they will activate the vending machine for you. You can then select the cigarettes you want, put the change in and receive them.
I was so excited that I requested 6 packs of cigarettes. The guy gave me a strange look afterwards 😅
Interesting! I would not have expected it to work that way, but very interesting nonetheless. Looking forward to hopefully visiting Spain sometime in the future, might have to make a version of this video for Spain ngl 😂😂
@@jacobfuckingjones If it's the same as Portugal, you don't have to ask for the specific cigarette pack you want. You just need to ask the person at the counter (usually at coffee shops, etc.) to activate the machine. You then insert your coins into the machine, push the button for the pack you want, and the rest is business as usual. I assume that system's in place to prevent kids/teenagers from using the machines.
In italy there are cigarette vending machines virtually everywhere you go but you need to put in your medical card to prove your age, unlike japan with the driver license
what brands do you have in spain?
This brings me back to 2008 when I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, the hotel I was staying at with my friends family had a arcade and vending machine room next to each other. The vending room had a fully functional vintage cigarette vending machine where you put the money in ($5) and you’d be able to pull the tab and the pack you’d choose would drop down. I can seem to remember it was only Newport and Marlboro Kings soft packs. My under legal age to smoke ass was in bliss for that week I was there. Ah, memories!

even if i broke the glass, it wouldn't let me into the machine 😔😔 i saw a cig vending machine getting refilled off camera, and it's got some heavyweight metal in it for security, have to use a pry bar if not more to get it fully open ngl

Mild Seven Aqua was my go-to when I visited Japan the first time in 2010. It was the first pack I bought from a kiosk in Osaka and the one I picked if I couldn't think of what else to get.

Also in italy we have those but they're more modern, i think this one was really old. In italy you can also choose between cigarettes and tobacco and the filters, and also in italy you have to insert a "sanitary card" in order to check if you are 18yo, then it allows you to buy cigarettes.
as a brazilian i find these vending machines fascinating, here in brazil they are not common (drinks, cigarettes, nothing to be honest) buying a cigarette here is like a 007 movie

@@MrFredstttbh they are not too expensive, considering their price on USA or EU, we pay around like USD$2 to USD$3 per pack and since you're over 18 y/o you can find them at most of every store/markets but unfortunately we have a very lack of options of brands here so... either you buy a pack of Marlboro or Dunhill's, or buy a not much tasty cigarette (maybe on large cities you can find more brands but don't expect too much)

I used one in a bar in Shinjuku that had a paddle tied to it. You just put the paddle over the taspo scanner and then you're good to go. I guess it had someones card taped inside of it or something.

Whenever I see a video about Japanese vending machines, I think of the stories I heard in the 1990s about used panty vending machines.
The Silvia name is interesting. I think of the Nissan Silvia, a car that is very popular for drifting. The USA got a very nerfed version called the 240SX.
They have these in America usually in pool halls and bars. For when you're too drunk to drive to a gas station. I've bought smokes from them before and the main problem is they sit in the machine for too long and the cigarettes become stale. Stale cigs taste awful. The second problem is they are too expensive. Usually 2 to 5 dollars more than convenience store prices.
600 yen is insane! Here in the states a pack of Marlboro Reds can go up to 13 USD depending on the city

They really are so good, haven't tried a single Japanese cigarette I'd classify as "truly bad" yet, which is wild. Peace cigarettes are fantastic, quite possibly my favorite brand of all time at the moment, and as you said, are so high quality it's insane. Love them 💪

@jacobfuckingjones I remember as a kid those old school cig vending machines in pretty much every bar/pub/tavern, shit even both of the bowling alleys had them. I'm pretty sure the one bowling alley that's left still has their's in the bar but just for nostalgia unfortunately.
taspo card service will be terminated in Mar 2026, well you still need a Japanese driver license or My Number Card to verify the age when you want to buy a cigarette from a vending machine.

i dont know why these are so special, because here in germany where i live are tons of tabako alcohol and (since of last spring) even weed -vending machines , every single machine can only be used with an id or drivers license ( since you have to be 18 for one ) .
also the drinking age is lower here
If theres one thing ive learned about this man is that hes not gonna lie…
last time I was in JP cigarettes were 180¥ a packet. now I can see prices here in this video in the 560-600¥ range. favorite cigarettes of choice at the time were “mild seven” (8mg) and of course “seven stars” (8mg). ... really strong tobacco mentions include “hi lite” 20mg nicotine strength.
you could have used 1,000¥ note located under the Taspo card no? or is that inoperable now.

Cigarette machines are common in Vegas. Lots of casinos have them here right next to a normal snack machine as well.
In Austria we have cigarette machines everywhere, I'm was surprised to find out that it's not normal in most countries.
you also have alcoholic drink vending machines everywhere in japan. The only place there was something in it tho was next to the Tsuutenkaku in Osaka

lark cigarettes had charcoal granules in them and the package of the past when they used to be here in the usa said the gas trap filter they said on the back filters out harsh gases im surprised you didnt pick up a pack when you there to being back home maybe you will bring back a pack next time you go to japan or do a review of them over there
good to know! and yeah, regrettably, I didn't get a pack while I was in Japan. Hopefully can find a pack in the States (I've heard they're still made, but are extremely rare), try it, and then pickup a pack of Japanese Larks next time I visit! Charcoal filter cigarettes are pretty good, so looking forward to trying them when the opportunity arises. Thanks for the info man !
9:44 it said underaged(in Japan is 20) smoking is prohibited. This is an old style vending machine, it doesn’t work because there is no way for it to install a age verify machine.
