My mom and her sisters rockin' out on the Smothers Brothers Show! That's my mom on the drums. Aunt Peggy singing lead. Aunt Debra on the Base, and Aunt Melody on the Guitar. These girls rock!!!
James Walker I couldn't remember what sixties television show I saw them on I was thinking it was Ed Sullivan did they play there but I remembered that the cute drummer was able to twirl a drumstick not many drummers do that! They are Stone Cold foxes and that's probably why I remember them all these years The clingers Rock
I just read that Peggy passed away in Aug of 75 in Boulder, Colo. Just shortly after studio work singing on one of Stephen Stills albums. So young ...maybe 25 or 26.
You should tell your aunts that their 5 minutes of fame lives on in Australia - the Easybeats song they covered is iconic and their '60s garage rock credentials are highly regarded. They should reform and tour Down Under!
Debra Clinger was in the female trio Rock Flowers & made 2 albums for Wheel Records (division of RCA Victor). The song "Number Wonderful" went to # 94 on Billboard Hot 100 Charts in March of 1972. Later with Kaptain Kool And The Kongs (1976 - 1978).
I was 13 when I first saw The Clinger Sisters. As a young guitarist in a band with some other GUYS, I was mesmerized! I’d never seen anything like it. These women were trailblazers way before The Runaways! What a joy to see them again!
When the Smothers Brothers show was repeated on E!, they showed contemporary commentary about the episodes. One of the writers, Carl Gottlieb, who went on the co-write "The Jerk" with another SmoBro writer, Steve Martin says that the writers were really excited when the Clingers came into the studio AND he still carried a torch for them!
I discovered this gem on Palmyra's Trash-Pop Treasures. Little Steven's Underground Garage alone is worth the price of Sirius/XM just because of excellent music like this.
I know because of the Kim Fowley connection some people would be reminded of an early version of the Runaways but they remind me of the Carrie Nations - a fictional band that featured in the film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls which was released the year after this...wonder if Russ Meyer was inspired by The Clingers
Pen Aunger - I agree 100%, the Clingers resemblance to the Carrie Nations (whom they preceeded) in looks , visual style, lead singer, vocal delivery is not coincidental. That cunning Old fox Russ Meyer lifted the Clingers look/style/sound for the Carrie Nations, Lock stock and Barrel. BTW: This cover of the Easybeats "Good Times" by the Clingers is fantastic, and should have been a hit and these Gals should have become famous 👍✌️🎸
The Clinger Sisters (later The Clingers) were Debra Clinger, Jeanette Clinger, Leesa Clinger, Melody Clinger, Patsy Clinger, and Peggy Clinger. They first performed together when the sisters were in grade school and performed on Andy Williams's television show before becoming regular guests on Danny Kaye's show, the Smothers Brothers Show, the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour, and many other television programs.
Fanny and Clingers were around the same time. I saw Fanny at the Whiskey and the boy versus girl musician thing was not even a question. Not bad for being girls... FU. Just kick ass hard rock. All 4 kicked butt. The crowd loved them. 1972.
That's Tommy Smothers, the loony half of the Smothers Brothers who were a Canadian comedy duo. They ended up with their own TV show and made a point of having on good quality bands. The fact that The Clingers consisted of four attractive girls also probably helped a bit.
I can't believe how many classic rock era bands I am still discovering. It is hard to believe they weren't a big hit. Can anybody tells us what they are doing now? I know that Peggy passed away in 1975 according to a website. RIP Peggy and these chicks rocked!
The Clingers were featured in Blitz Magazine's Classics Revisited column some years ago. Not for this often covered Easybeats standard (which was also done by Paul Revere And The Raiders), but for another of their singles. Despite a fairly decent mainstream media presence throughout that era, their records were pretty tough to find. Sadly, that remains the case. But it's worth the effort!
I found this video searching for more material that Debra Clinger was involved in. I had a kiddie-crush on her as "superchick" on the Kroft Supershow, and always wondered who she actually was, only recently finding the connection. What an interesting business (television) :)
I might have commented to you before or it might have been one of your siblings. Your Mom is very talented and I enjoyed her on the "Krofft Supershow". Michael McMeel helped me create a petition on facebook, the get "KSS" on DVD. We're shooting for 300 signers. Your Mom has signed, along with Louise Duart. We would be honored if you would sign it. It's called "Krofft Supershow DVD/Kaptain Kool & Kongs Reunion".
That would be Tommy Smothers. This was from the Smothers Brothers Show, and he used to do silly bits like that. He can be seen on Buffalo Springfields' "For What It's Worth"
No, ReadWooooo, I noticed the dude too, who happened to be Tom Smothers, as this, I believe, was broadcast on The Smothers Brothers Show ( if you're old enough to remember. I used to watch it with my parents).
The original airing of this was seared in my memory because I loved the song and because the bass player was so cute. Didn't remember the name of the group or the song (except for the phrase "Rock Me"), so didn't know how to search for it on TH-cam. Encountering a link to this earlier tonight on a '60s website was a real treat. Brings back wonderful memories - thank so much for uploading this!
Deborah Clinger went on to become part of the Sid and Marty Krofft kids TV show as part of the singing lineup of Captain Kool and the Kongs. She was Super Chick.
I used to have a crush on debra Clinger when she was a part of Sid & Marty Krofft's Kaptain Kool & The Kongs. I also watched the episode of The Smothers Brothers that they were supposed to be on but they cut it out.
Because I commented on their sound, not their looks. And I'm not stupid enough to think they could have been influenced by Van Halen. I really like the sound, and I compared it to some of the biggest stars of the 60s. Sorry if you find that objectionable. @@largelester

At the Vegas Rockaround in '03 , Kim Fowley overheard me , mistakenly , saying this group was from Switzerland. I was thinking of another band. He was actually pretty cool about it.
I remember this from the Smothers Brothers Show because I was surprised they were doing an Easybeats tune (from their 'Vigil' album). Though the original Easybeats album version is far superior (the band's video version is edited down), it's great that the Clingers - no doubt due to producer Kim Fowley, a man who knew his stuff - made that choice. Notice at 30 seconds the image of Tommy Smothers in a blonde wig pops up. I wonder how many viewer caught that?!
@glenlyons98 Are you sure The Smothers Brothers were Canadian? I am positive that they are not. And how can anyone have not heard of them before? like you seem to think "sreafea" hasn't.
How did these girls get hold of this Australian/Easybeats song,I wonder?? They are OK, but you need to listen to the original. Also Jimmy Barnes and Michael Hutchence did a good job a few yrs later.

They're great!! VERY COOL for you!

She tried her hand at acting for a while but didn't last long. Her last TV credit was in 1982. Would love to see what she looks like today

Very good 1969 Clingers song!!
I can't believe I never heard of this group before, they were very talented. So sorry to learn that the lead singer Peggy died young.
Some songs just work full stop, period whatever. This is a Fookin great version of a great underrated song.
