My father is Dan Huntley the rhythm guitar and arranger, he's the only living member of the band left, R.I.P to the other members, such an amazing band.
Hello i'm from Russia. Me and my band called The Silver Nuggets plays your father song on gigs. Russian people on gigs really like this song. This song is on a level as another clasical garage song Louie Louie for example. Sorry for my English! Best wishes and from Russia with love!
Hey Joel....you might not remember me that well. This is Dan Huntley, MD and I share you love with my brothers in the band. You were young on the scene. But, I hope you are doing well
I never heard this when it came out. So glad I finally discovered it, a true classic that I love as much as if I first heard it in the 60's. Even more because it's new to me!
One of the coolest 60s Garage Rock songs of all time! And they were from Charlotte where I am now. If I remember correctly, this song was recorded at Studio East which is still there, I drive past it now and then. I've been listening to this song for decades, great to finally see what the Paragons looked like in concert!
So glad I get to see my Uncles Johnny and Bobby perform! I hope one day I can make them proud by carrying on the performing in the Pace family:) RIP Uncle Johnny and Uncle Bobby!
This song is garage rock nirvana and gives me goosebumps. Classic 60s garage from the fertile North Carolina scene! One listen to tobacco a go go is all you need to know!
I my god... I think this is one of the greatest garage band songs of all times, love the Cynics cover, love Marmalade 1975's clip tribute and now this... I can hear the voice of GOD! and watch an original clip at the same time. This is what I'm looking for from U TooB!
Your brother Bobby and I were close friends. He was a very good musician. Jim Charles and I were in the band ( BIZARRO ) back in the 60's & 70's. Small world.
There's a fantastic club night in North London (England) called Mousetrap where this tune is one of the biggest hits and the whole place goes crazy for it every time it's played. People young and old are dancing hard to it, just as it was meant to be, I'm sure. Such a great record - it'll be rocking forever.
Far Out !!! we played many venues together in Charlotte, My Band was Fragmentary Blue. This brings back many memories, the last gig we shared was Wesleys , they had a Hearse. My band was broken up when drafted for Vietnam... I'm still playing Charlotte venues now as Funky Geezer,... Thanks for posting.
Oh my gosh, this was on a compilation LP of '60's NC garage bands I bought back in the '80's. I think the album was called Tobacco-A-Go-Go. There was a great resurgence of garage rock then. Wish it would come back!!
I remember seeing that very broadcast ! RIP Bobby ,Johnny. Their dad "Leroy" really helped them in those days..he drove that hearse, built them a rehearsal room etc..Paces were a great family..
I knew all of them except the rhythm guitar player.Tim Moore on keyboard.Pat Walters lead guitar. Johnny Pace,Vocals and drums,Bobby Pace bass. Song written by Jim Charles of Salisbury NC.I still have that 45. It had “Better Man Than I” by Yardbirds on B side.
great band R.I.P. my friends johnny and bobb y pace. ..and yes "garage rock radio" this was recorded in charlotte at what is now studio east but then was arthur smith's studio where a couple of yrs. before james brown recorded papa's got a brand new bag!
Dang. This is *good*. Really good. Always love discovering great music i missed from local groups in the garage psych years, I was pretty much too young then. Thanks and great job Paragons!!
@comedypace Cool guys, super energy, absolutely awesome tune. At 1:03 or so the drummer and bass player are in the frame at the same time, and it's easy to see they are family. They seem like the kind of cool guy I used to wish I was myself when I was that age. I found this clip so charming that I looked around a bit to see if band members are still playing and then I find out that at least a couple of members are, but that the drummer and his little brother are both gone...I'm really sorry.
Nearly every band I love covers this, but these kids... The big smiles and the wide-eyed 'wow; let alone it is THEIR song'... It's pretty fucking great.
As a former radio DJ from Chicago and huge 60’s Garage Punk collector, this song rocks! How I wish today’s kids could just understand how great the mid-60’s were!
I wonder if these guys knew how extremely cool they were. The entire song is just G - D - F - C, over and over, but it works. Great song for a beginning guitarist.
They look really young here. I mean, 15 or 16, 17 at the most That means that technically they still had to attend high school. In American high schools there was the obligation to have a short back and sides regulation haircut. If your hair covered your ears or neck you were risking expulsion. I believe this rule was abolished in 1968 or 69. But with the advent of the British Invasion groups, kids who wanted to be cool and needed to complete high school carried out bizarre permutations of the Beatles moptop, with humongous fringes (or bangs for our Yank brethren) and back and sides clipped to No. 2, which made them look like mushrooms. These guys though, have all long hair, covering the ears and reaching past their collars. In 1966, this wouldn't have been tolerated anywhere within the American school system. Does that mean they were all high school dtopouts? Genuine question, i am curious to know how they could get away with it while attending high school. Maybe a gentleman of a certain vintage who has been through this malarkey at the time can help me out with this enquiry?
It was registered with BMI on Aug. 31, 1967 and the only registered songwriter/composer is the arranger of the song (who knew how to write sheet music) and on the label with J. Pace is Danny E. Huntley, MD (D. Huntley on the label). J. Pace died in 1987 and later B. Pace, tragically in a car wreck, (the base player)....God rest their souls.
