  • Cowboy Classic starring Michael Landon released in 1964: Bonanza - Episode 180 - The Underdog - Harry Starr, a half breed Comanche, is hired by the Cartwrights to work on the Ponderosa. When confronted with the prejudice of other hands he turns the other cheek. Meanwhile someone is stealing horses in the valley...is he involved?
    The Underdog
    Director: William F. Claxton
    Writer: Donn Mullally
    Stars: Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Release Date: 13 December 1964 USA
    Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
    Charles Bronson guest-stars as Harry Star, a halfbreed who is regularly subjected to the bigotry of the townsfolk. Feeling that Harry has been unjustly persecuted, Ben Cartwright hires the man as a ranchhand. What Ben doesn't know, but the audiences does, is that Harry is a member of a gang of horse thieves, who intend to exploit Ben's trust by pulling off an elaborate scam. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
    ""The Underdog" is one of the best remembered episodes, no doubt due to the sterling presence of Charles Bronson, at 43 already a well known movie actor, whose TV credits would cease in three years after relocating to Europe. 'Special Guest Star' Bronson is cast as Harry Starr, a drifter facing prejudice in the Old West, his mother a white woman and his father a renegade Comanche. The Cartwrights take pity on the loner by offering him a job as ranch hand, but encounter opposition from another newcomer, Lee Burton (Tom Reese), who decides to take his two days pay and quit. Later in town, Harry is assaulted by Burton's men, so Ben Cartwright decides the best thing for Harry is to work in solitude north of the Ponderosa. Unfortunately, trouble follows the half breed, as horses begin disappearing from ranches around town, and Burton himself discovers a branding iron hidden in Harry's shack, with Harry nowhere to be found. As the bounty for Harry grows to $4000, Burton intends to collect it, dead or alive (preferably dead). Joe does most of the work, Hoss makes only a brief appearance, Adam not at all. Low budget director-actor Bruno VeSota is clearly seen delivering a couple of lines as the bartender." Written by kevinolzak on IMDb.com
    "Charles Bronson guest stars in this Bonanza story concerning a young half white, half Comanche drifter who winds up on the Ponderosa and gets a job breaking horses. The Cartwrights befriend him especially Michael Landon.
    But being who he is he runs up against prejudice so Lorne Greene has him working out of a remote line shack. And then horses for the roundup reymuda start disappearing.
    All I will say is that things are not as they seem. Quite an elaborate con is working here.
    Charles Bronson dominates this episode with a fine performance of a man who can't quite fit in anywhere." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

      Speaking of the beautiful horses, googled about them and saw the horrible thing that happened to some of them. Someone with a really sharp knife slipped in there and wounded some of them severely. Some of them they were able to save but Little Joe’s beautiful black and white pinto, Cochise was so severely injured that he couldn’t be saved. They had to euthanize him. They never found out who had done it!!! 🤔🤔🤔🥺🥺🥺

    I felt necessary to comment because of all the nostalgia that this TV serie brings.
    I'm just 23 but had my grandma who raised me as her son and she is still so deep in my mind and heart. I lost her early this year and I just can't stop remembering all the lovely moments I lived with her and how valuable they were at that moment. So I saw this entire episode and was just thinking how she used to wake up every morning and make some coffee and other morning stuffs and then tune TCM Channel to watch Bonanza, that's when I used yo wake up and see her sitting right in front of the T.V and enjoy this classics and on weekends I used to accompany her. Sometimes, someone is happy just that doesn't see it at that moment. Still miss her everyday and hopefully one day I see her again. Greetings from Nicaragua.

    Good to see Charles Bronson in an early role, but you didn't have to look far to see Charlie in the early to mid 60s.
    Bronson was extremely busy in TV and film during this period.
    He really wasn't an up and coming struggling actor when he did this episode. He was pretty much already there, having "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape" under his belt and preparing to become one of "The Dirty Dozen"
    A truly amazing career.
    Thank You Charlie!

      @Joe Owens. I agree Joe. It's no fun being the underdog. I was the underdog for my entire life. I was born with Sjogren's Syndrome and Asperger's Disease. I was born on Christmas Eve in 1956. Sjogren's Syndrome wasn't known to exist in children then, and Asperger's Disease wasn't recognized at all. The Sjogren's Syndrome caused my immune system to attack my tear glands 100% of the time so I hated swimming. The Asperger's caused me to not know how to socialize. Yes, except for my mother and my younger brother, I was a loner growing up. It wasn't until I was 21 years old that I was finally diagnosed with the Sjogren's Syndrome. I can definitely empathize with Charles Bronson's character. He didn't fit in because he was a halfbreed.

Back in 1987, my family and I were vacationing at Lake Tahoe. We saw some signs in the area advertising the Ponderosa. I had always assumed it was all Hollywood. So we followed the signs. We toured the entire set and went inside their "house". Now, when I watch these old reruns, I recognize all the places we toured. It sure looks different in person.

    Good episode with stellar guest performance from Charles Bronson, who by 1964 had already played important roles in THE GREAT ESCAPE and THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, among other flicks. Michael Landon in superior form. Two gripes: 1. Adam does not appear for one second, apart from the introductory titles; 2. The motivation for the half-breed's duplicitous and treasonous behavior goes frustratingly unexplained, as does Tom Reese's switch from racist to underdog to that same much disdained half-breed. How the spotter fails to track the very visible Joe pursuing the villains at the end is also baffling. That said, right until the last 4 min, this episode is quite entrancing. Thanks for sharing

    ...Bonanza and their great stories about life. As a young naive man I dated a beautiful girl who we can call an"underdog" ; a female version of Bronson's character but in real life. I fell love with her and sent her money every month. One day I showed up unannounced and discovered she was using money on not so good things. Like Joe, I felt so double-crossed but understood a human was just trying to survive. Years later she passed away most likely due to a rugged lifestyle. I visited her two weeks before her passing with a Bible, a rosary and bouquet of flowers. We prayed together, she felt remorse for her life. But I said God has everlasting love and our sins are forgiven. We said we loved each other; apologized and she passed. Underdogs - all of us.

    • @rbrowning9617
      @rbrowning9617 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Though not a breed, they are bred. And they're not just about color , they have certain traits. So maybe technically he shouldn't have called it a breed, it IS a type of horse. Also, I'd like to know where your horse "expertise" comes from that you can be so critical and full of...."facts"

    • @user-bx7nw1ve6y
      @user-bx7nw1ve6y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rbrowning9617 Saying a palomino is a type of horse is like saying a golden retriever is a type of dog. . . duh, and although I do not claim to be any sort of expert, my knowledge comes from books mostly. As for palominos not being a specific breed, I believe you agreed about that in your first sentence so I don't get your point. I have nothing to do with facts being facts. There are at least a half dozen breeds that can be palomino in color, including Quarterhorse, American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walker, Morgan, Haflinger and even occasionally Thoroughbred, which all have very different traits, none of them palomino-specific. Why don't you google it and get back to me? Just don't expect a reply. I've had enough. P.S. Wilbur made the same mistake about Mr. Ed. who was an American Saddlebred/Arabian mix. But neither Ben nor Wilbur's inaccuracies diminish my enjoyment of the shows.
