    I met him this past summer at a bar. He was super nice... And super hammered.

      Was he any mad? like when he got PHYSICAL at a fan demanding him an autograph?

    • @johnulcer
      @johnulcer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @@canadavatar Nope. I didn't see anyone demand an autograph though. He was hanging out at a local bar in my town after one of his concert gigs. I walked in, saw him over in a corner leaning against a jukebox surrounded by 3 or 4 people. I walked over and was very surprised because he was mid-story but began looking over at me while telling it and I realized he was basically inviting me in to the conversation. So when there was a pause I said something like, "Hey Kiefer, I don't want to bug you but just wanted to say I'm a big fan." He left his spot leaning against the jukebox and walked over to me and my date, his eyes got all animated and he was like "Hey man, thanks a lot! Which roles are your favorites?" And suddenly I found myself in a 5-minute conversation with him about Dark City and Stand By Me. He was gracious, shook my hand and took photos with us. I didn't ask for an autograph. I asked him if I could buy him a shot and he hesitated (I think he almost said yes to be honest) but then said "It's cool man, we have a tab open, you don't need to spend anything. Thanks though." He went back to his circle and we kind of hung around a bit on the periphery just in shell shock. As word got around that he was there, about 45mins later his security escorted him out a back entrance - but he literally turned on his way out and came back over to me and my then-girlfriend and said, "Just wanted to tell you it was an absolute pleasure" and shook my hand. I think he was hammered, but it was still one of the nicest celebrity encounters I've had. And for some reason I thought he had a reputation as a dick, so it was about as nice a surprise as when I met Axl Rose and he, too, was very gracious and greeted every fan.

    Go Kiefer…
    I stopped drinking for 5 whole years.
    You heard that right, 5 whole years.
    5 years which saw me lose the weight I’d always wanted to lose, re-gained the slim figure I’d had in my 20’s… and was pretty fit…
    I found it hard but I did it.
    The problem was… it was 5 years of complete misery.
    My family and friends would invite me to the bar and I’d sit there drinking soda whilst everyone else was drinking having a great time.
    And there was me, knowing that my belly was no longer hanging over my jeans but feeling like I didn’t want to be there.
    I’ve started drinking again now and yes, my belly is bigger but I enjoy the buzz of sharing a drink with friends.
    I feel normal again.
    I won’t be giving up drinking any time soon. Cheers 🍻

    He was my first crush as a kid. I actually met him when I was 19 (at a bar go figure) there was a disgusting guy flashing women on a smoking patio and he was not having that and wanted to kick his ass lol, I asked him what happened to my lost boy, he seemed offended at first but then thanked me, all in all he was such a nice guy and so willing to talk and a gentleman. This is why I love him. Finally, someone sees it as I do! It doesn’t have to be one extreme or the other, sometimes moderation is the best solution. I made this very decision a few years ago. Yes, I get hammered, I just don’t do it every night. I love the bar scene. I love everything about it, so I’m with Kiefer on this one.

    I respect his answer/decision. We have one life, and he (from the sounds of it) didn't want to be fighting something he could potentially manage. Abstinence is great/necessary for some, and I'm guessing that mental energy to abstain can itself be overwhelming, like someone fighting for heaven and willing to sacrifice this life to get it.

    • @Julia-nl3gq
      @Julia-nl3gq ปีที่แล้ว

      Except it's obvious he isn't managing it. Sadly. The only way for alcoholics to manage it is to not do it. They can't control it if they do. I sadly wasted almost 2 decades of my life with an alcoholic as a partner, I know more about this than I would wish on anyone.

  • @travman1987

    I'll bet you money that his wife and entire family would rather not be around a drunk all the time. Alcoholics and addicts really only think of themselves in all aspects of their existence. Of course hes having fun, the person in the family who is always intoxicated is usually the only one of the group having any fun. Its great for him with all of his money and fame, but the message he is sending to your average person is pretty sad. People have the illusion that they have their vices under control, its always the other way around.

    I dont undestand why the interviewer is pushing the "your an alcoholic" vibe. Using terms like high functioning is a reference to being an alco. KS isnt an alco so why should he stop? I know plenty people that love to go out tell stories and have a drink..... in that order. I also know people who go out to get drunk.... those are the people I dont want to be around.

      David Carlson But it sure fucking helps. People say they can have fun without alcohol but it just excludes them from plans because they don't drink and if they did go out to a club or bar they would be stiff as fuck and a little anti social.

    • @davecarl77
      @davecarl77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's nothing wrong with social drinking but with an alcholic it willl take your family, your job, your liver, your life. You have a choice, live or die. I go out to clubs, bars, concerts and I have a good time. I'd rather be a little stiff or uncomfortable than dead.

    High functioning, sure, but you can be destroying your liver with zero physical signs until it's too late and you need a transplant. Heavy drinking over time can also cause dementia, neuropathy, heart failure, and so much more. That's the only thing that got me to consider quitting. If anyone here is considering quitting, it's worth trying for a few months to see how it goes.

      Svein Grimstad He is on a self-destruct path. Sure he can do whatever he wants with himself as long as he never takes the wheel. Obviously he’s wasted more often than sober (I mean look at him even in this interview) so it’s clear to me he should have his driver’s licence revoked.

    • @sveingrimstad9151
      @sveingrimstad9151 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Strange he managed to work on the Designated Survivor project if he's more wasted than sober. Some co-actors said he often came wasted on the set of 24 too. If he can pull it off drunk, he really is a skilled actor. I seen the whole 24 series several times, but I never noticed he could have been drunk. All his acting were professional. In this interview he said, as long as he work, he get to have a fun time with drinks after. That means every night then? I hope this style does not lead too an too early death. He's relatively young still. Reason to feel worried, right? I love Kiefer as an actor, he mean a lot to me.

    • @thatabu
      @thatabu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Svein Grimstad Well I don’t know how he pulled off Designated Survivor. When you’re an alcoholic with extremely high tolerance for ethanol, I guess anything is possible. But really he looked like crap in this interview from 18 months ago, dunno what state he’s in currently. He’s bound to hit rock bottom any time soon.

    • @thatabu

    • @sveingrimstad9151
      @sveingrimstad9151 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's hope he get himself together and sober up. I guess he either drink at all or he drink a lot, nothing in between. It's like that for so many. I know the problem of stopping when I first began, and then the hangover comes as a chock that I can`t handle, so I repair myself and do it at the next morning and the next till I can't get down another drop, except water. 4,5 or 6 days in a row, not longer and once or twice a month. But other times it could be easier to limit myself. But it was kind of easier to just drop it, for 8 months so far. Some times feel like falling of the "water wagon" though. But I will not overdo it, just moderate, or we shall see...

      I'm pretty sure the teetotal programs like the 12-Steps are mostly garbage. They have a recidivism rate that is absurdly high for a supposed rehab program. Meanwhile, in Scandinavia, psychologists have had great breakthroughs trying to teach people coping mechanisms to help them moderate their own behavior with the ultimate goal of cutting back and eventually quitting altogether.
      For some, abstaining completely is the only option. For others, it is not the answer.

    There is a TOTAL difference between people who drink alot or every day (heavy drinkers) and an alcoholic. Check out some documentaries on alcoholics. Alcoholics drink in excess of 2 liters or more of spirits every day. They get up and drink in the morning, noon and night.

    • @akfox38
      @akfox38 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Man, I like to drink, but if you drink a lot every day, even if it's only at night, you're an alcoholic. Don't fool yourself.

      An alcoholic is someone who can't stop. Sometimes you need to take a break, just to make sure you still can.

    • @ducttapeheart

      That’s not even remotely true. That’s the version of an alcoholic other “functioning” alcoholics use to keep themselves in denial.

      no some alcoholics are what is known as binge drinkers. They can abstain for a period of time, but once they have one drink, they can not stop and will consume vast quantities

    Man you can see the denial in his eyes as he says it. He throws the "I enjoy the times too much and the memories" half hearted. Why not just say you have a problem and can't give it up? That's more honest. You're working on it are you Kiefer? No one get's that many DUI's and arrests and has it under control. He'll drink himself to death and will just ruin more relationships along the way. I hope he can get sober.

    • @Julia-nl3gq
      @Julia-nl3gq ปีที่แล้ว

      I know. Anyone with any experience with addicts can see what you pointed out - that you can so clearly see the denial. I spent decades of my life with an alcoholic partner, I suppose that's why it's so obvious to me. But, still, it's amazing how blind so many in the comments are....they're actually applauding his choice to remain an addict in denial. Ridiculous.
