  • Growing up with Hollywood Royalty isn’t all you’d think it to be. Hear from KIEFER SUTHERLAND first hand on what it was like growing up with DONALD SUTHERLAND.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    Amazing episode this week. Kiefer Sutherland (24, Designated Survivor) and Jason Patric (The Lost Boys) join us this week to talk about their bond built off of The Lost Boys, being intimidated by other actors, and what it was like growing up with Hollywood royalty in their families. Kiefer and Jason reminisce on how they met and how they each developed as young actors by helping certain productions of movies. The guys reveal some funny stories while on the set of Lost Boys and Kiefer’s wedding and later we discuss how social media and cinema coexist in modern day entertainment.

    I love that Kiefer refuses to make himself a victim, with his childhood. He just says, "Dad was working. Mom took care of us. Our thing is our thing. " Incredible attitude for these days.

    • @EastSide-qc5oy
      @EastSide-qc5oy ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I get it, but “incredible”? Sure his childhood was complicated but he also grew up with a shitload of privileges and advantages, both in terms of his lifestyle and his career prospects.
      He also screwed up a lot along his way, getting himself into a bunch of trouble with alcohol and whatever else. Multiple DUIs and at least one arrest for violence. I don’t judge people for substance abuse issues but he was likely allotted plenty of chances to improve himself without serious repercussions, chances unavailable to most people who don’t have his wealth or fame.
      I understand admiring him on some level for not making himself out to be a victim in this video but calling his attitude and outlook “incredible” is a bit overly charitable in my opinion. I might call his attitude “incredible” if he’d been through all that he has and still had to get up every morning to go to some office job, or clean toilets in a hospital or something. But that’s our culture of celebrity worship.

    Kiefer has definitely had his problems, but man he seems like a pretty legit dude. Just proud of his Dad's achievements, rather than worrying about any slights he may have caused him. Also, I thought at the end it was really cool of him to mention "and Michelle too" when discussing his divorce and how his daughter Sara didn't get a say. Michelle was his ex-wife's daughter from another marriage. Nice of him to make sure she's mentioned in the same breath as his daughter, since they are all a "family".

      Americans don't know it but Kiefer is essentially as close to Canadian royalty as you can get. His Grandfather Tommy Douglas is the father of medicare and as close as we come to having an aggrandized politician.
      We don't like our prime ministers here. I can't think of a single former PM that if I was in an elevator with that I wouldn't cut a giant fart. But most of us like and respect tommy douglas. He's the main reason we have health care.
      There's no real american analog to that. Imagine someone being the son of Jimmy Stewart while at the same time being Teddy Roosevelt's grandson.

    My father was exactly like Michael's father. He died lonely and estranged from his family in the end. He died without ever telling his son that he loved him. I beat myself up for awhile after he died that I had not forced my way back into his life, but that is not what he wanted. I learned not to be angry or resentful that he didn't even know my now teenage kids, despite living 5 miles away. I learned to understand he was a broken man who had too much pride and insecurities to help himself, nor accept help from others. I have a totally different and close relationship w my kids. I think the big reason why there was no competition between them, and people will go "no duh" but it is a big deal, is the age difference between them and when they started acting. Donald is 30 years older and most people started seeing him in movies when he was already in his 30's(he was around 35 in MASH for example). By the time Kiefer started around 86/87, MASH was already 15 years old, Animal House and Body Snatchers were a decade old so people grew up watching Donald as an adult and older characters and knew him as these where as Kiefer was this young kid - you couldn't compare him to his dad because you never saw his dad in that age of role. And by the time Kiefer was in his 30's, he was a name himself so I think it is hard for them to compete with each other and I think it is hard for an audience to compare because of that.

    • @KS-xk2so

      Kiefer also made wildly different choices in the roles he played than his Dad as well, which probably helped differentiate too.

    • @TheGeorgeD13
      @TheGeorgeD13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KS-xk2so Kiefer's strengths as an actor is also just much different than Donald in general. Donald had gave very often quiet performances that had a lot of simmering anger, rage, and other feeling just boiling under the surface, trying very hard to contain them. Kiefer on the other hand has thrived in roles where his character is letting all these things out in the open and wearing those feelings on his sleeves.

    There is a slight sadness in his tone at times when he describes the relationship he has with his father. Not a bitterness or anything like that. I feel like he knows what a typical relationship between a father and son normally is for most people and acknowledges that this was something he could never have with his father growing up. But at the same time, he still embraces the relationship for what it is and accepts that it's something that works very well for them both. No victims here.

    He speaks about his dad taking a sabbatical from acting and therefore leaving him a "window" to carve his own niche. And WOW what a career he has carved. Obviously from Lost Boys to Young Guns, Flatliners, but then on to A Few Good Men and what an incredible role in that, but also then such a departure from his real-life persona as Freddie Lee Cobb in A Time To Kill, to where he still apparently has folks in real life just treat him poorly because they can't see him as not that character! The mark of a true actor. But this interview yet more ammunition for those who see that he is a true gentleman and a lovely soul making his way through this life, and entertaining us while he does so.

    An opening question that lasts 1 minute 24 seconds !!! Why do interviewers do that shit?

    Kiefer refuses to be honest about it. No way it was easy or fun as a kid knowing your father was more interested in other things (work, other family etc).

    3:30 Donald S. takes a sabbatical for a decade? Not according to his IMDb page: he worked constantly during the 87-97 period, culminating with 7 parts in 93! Kiefer must have been on drugs. :D

    Kiefer's mother, Shirley Douglas, was a far better actor, and person, than Donald.

    I love you guys but let's put things in perspective... I would think your father working down in the coal mines might be a bit more difficult.

    Kiefer was filming a movie in Glenwood Springs Colorado and I was sitting in the bar at the hotel Colorado across the street and him and his Entourage came in and acted like I was intruding on them. I had brought a date with me down from Denver because I'm from Glenwood. So technically he was intruding on Myspace. Could had a good time partying together but he was way out of my league I guess for fun LOL so he thought.

    It takes 1:28 seconds to stop talking so his guests can answer his question. The art of the interview has been lost, lol
