I want to try to answer honestly and say love is blind, mention that stable comfortable middle age middle class men, often find themselves in a scenario similar to women in their late teens and early twenties, who fall for a 'bad boy; there wives develop issues, alcoholism or addiction, become infidelitous or develop some self destructive psychological issues, it happens as often as women find it in their husbands, just not as good a narrative for pop culture so less visible.
But unlike the woman, who'll stand by her husband until she doesn't, men in that scenario, much like that aforementioned young woman and the bad boy, let it go, tell themselves he can save her, she'll change, the woman he knows she is, is still in there.
Or maybe it's not, maybe it's as simple as the carnal catharsis of some animalistic clash born of the tension and contempt That'd be a very powerful heady rush, I'm sure.
