The fact a video like this even needs to exist means the standards body has failed.

Huh, I never realized how common this issue is, and the fact that 2.0 vs 2.1 is loosely interchanged is problematic. Thanks for the great work you guys do and great quality video!

It's pretty amazing that there's organizations dedicated to naming stuff like this, USB, etc. and they somehow manage to get worse every year at conveying the same information.

So, basically, HDMI followed exact USB footstep with confusing naming scheme.
    Talk about corporate greed.

Personally I think it should it should be a law for all TV Company's to put the ACTUAL specifications on every box, like the actual SCREEN refresh rate, panel color bitrate, all supported resolutions, REAL FULL SCREEN max Brightness, supported HDR formats, actual RGB range for each mode, which type of backlight, which type of display panel, and VRR type. I mean it isnt that hard of a thing to implement. Just create an information checklist label that can be stickered or printed on each box. Drives me crazy when I see a tv that says it's "Mini LED" and "120HZ Motion Rate" inferring that is what type of screen it is when there still, to the best of my knowledge, has NEVER BEEN AN ACTUAL "Micro LED" home-consumer tv produced and sold. They use these confusing and misleading or even trademarked terms that resemble something else all together

Hi guys. Greetings from Australia. 🇦🇺
Thx so much for publishing this unbelievable situation on your channel. I first learnt of it from other reviewers some time ago but my experience is that very few consumers realise the consequences, nor are they aware of the extra knowledge and care they are now responsible for when buying a TV.
Plainly it opens the door for confusion and deception. 👎
Having recently bought a TV my experience was that the sales assistant, brand sales rep nor the brand tech support team had any idea, ( well hopefully they didn't but I'm not sure. )
It is a complete mystery to most consumers as to how the HDMI Licencing Organisation came to this decision, ( I am not aware of any justification being published, ) but most would agree that it lacks solid logic and is very ill-advised. 🤯
The old system with HDMI 1.4B, 2.0 and 2.1 seemed to work well and " when it ain't broke, don't fix it".
    Cheers. 🍻

Interesting that this video comes out this week. After splurging for an LG C2 and Samsung HWQ930b(thanks Rtings!) for my PS5, I grabbed a few 2.1 HDMI cables on cyber Monday from Amazon. While they had 15k great reviews it wasn’t until I bothered reading the 1 star reviews that I found that not all the Amazon cables supported 48 gbps and 120hz rates. Some even stated they ruined their tv with knockoff hdmi or cat8 cables. What a joke that they can get away with false advertising on such a basic thing.

So the manufacturer's are not having to certify the TV or Monitor existence of the parts they claim to have. This should be illegal and the certification should be reinstated immediately.

VRR is supposed to works on series x according to users (haven’t tried it yet) & not my PS5. I SPENT an extra 150 just for VRR & it doesn’t work on my preferred console. It’s an insanely good picture and I choose fidelity over performance. I do hope when the standard fidelity is 60 f/sec that it can handle it or it’s time to replace our TV!!!😤

How do we as consumers stop these technical standards from bastardising their versioning systems? Both USB IF and HDMI Forum have done this and they’re both probably the most common technical standards discussed and used nowadays.
RTINGS could come up with a specification tick system but these things have to be licensed by manufacturers and they won’t do that because the confusion benefits them (ok so maybe one or two good manufacturers may be willing to pay doe these stickers/certifications but the point is not all would).
Lol I hate to say it (coz I like to lean Libertarian on most matters) but this is where someone like the European Union comes in and just mandates a certification system lol but that would make each TV cost more and might only help EU consumers.

Bought an "HDMI 2.1 Certified" cable from Amazon. It came and I realized since the "8K" logo was a sticker (in the pics it was printed on) that the claimed bandwidth was probably bs. Imagine that, I plug into my 4k device and it wasn't supported. Amazon's response was to take down my review calling the cable a scam (and I was 100% correct). Don't buy cables from amazon. Most are not what they say. Buy them in person and have someone show you they work on the highest res TV in the store; especially if it's a $50+ cable.

Hey RTINGS! Love your content! 🙂 I have a burning question that needs a definitive and confident answer. If I intend to split my PS5s signal between an 4k 60hz TV, and a 1440p 120hz monitor (sometimes I wanna play spiderman/GT7 on TV vs competitive shooters on the monitor for fps)...my assumption is an HDMI splitter will create some additional unwanted input lag. Is this true? If so, is there a way to avoid all additional lag and still split the signal? Thanks in advance!!!

Different companies have been arguing over that question for decades, and there’s no right answer answer unfortunately. Ultimately, you should set it to whatever looks best to you, but It’ll vary between content and even depending on your lighting conditions when you’re watching. 2.2 or 2.4 is generally accepted as the best overall, but again, some stuff is mastered lower and Apple has sworn by 1.8 gamma for decades.

I had my eye on an LG Nano886, which supposedly ticks all the boxes, hdmi 2.1. The only thing that was putting me off was the panel, which is edge lit, and poor local dimming. But for 750 euro it seemed like good value for a gaming tv. After watching this I'm even more sceptical. I know oled is the best for picture quality and features, but panel life is the issue with oled TV's. I've heard that 5 years is the most you can expect to get out of an oled panel if you're lucky. It's a bit of a conundrum alright.

I'm pretty tired of specs being so needlessly flexible. Either you support the spec, or you don't. If the new spec you want to create implements too many features that you don't want to drag everyone through the mud with. Then how about you just, don't implement them, or, crazy idea... Release more than one spec!
I get it, I don't need eARC in my monitors, being optional is nice. But why isn't there simply a non-home entertainment spec of HDMI 2.1 that the devices can target?
I'm just baffled. Part of me wonders if low-end manufacturers lobbied HDMI to keep device differences low-key.

my samsung qn95b has this weird issue where from my windows pc i can't get anything else than 144hz to work in 1440p or 4k, any other refresh rate makes my tv say there is so signal, super frustrating as a lot of games force 60hz when launching, i have to do lots of workarounds, typical samsung stupidity which they could fix with firmware but just gives zero manure about fixing since they already sold the tv they don't care about you as a customer since they already have your money
from mac i can do anything from 23.976 to 60 no issue

My qn90b can do 1440p 60hz, but only on my old PC and work laptop with hdmi 2.0. My newer laptop with 2.1 allows 100, 120 and 144hz, but I can force 1440p 60hz by using a USB C adapter with HDMI 1.4.
1440p 60hz is listed in the qn95b manual, but not with VRR. Maybe you need to disable gsync/freesync first.

Does that mean that fake HDMI 2.1 will not support 8k

I am an owner of a LG C2 65inch oled with 4 HDMI 2.1 but....everytime i fire up my Xbox x i get the screen that says, NO SIGNAL on my tv.
Then i go to the menu that says hdmi deep color and chanching the 4K to 4K of! Then the picture returns.
Then i press 4K back on and the 4K returns.
    Then i can play games.
Also the LG tv can show DOLBY VISION this happens at the same time so maybe the error is to be find in that section

If that's USD, an LG C2 hits that mark and supports everything.

The Hisense U8H and TCL 5 Series S555 would be our top picks! www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/ps5
Madpistol is right about the LG C2 but if you want a 55" LG C2, it's currently listed around $1299, so a little more out of your budget.

We'll make sure to pass this along to our video team to keep in mind. However, it's also worth mentioning that even though we may not always publish a video, we do put a lot of reviews up on our website! www.rtings.com/laptop
