100% agree. I'm OK with "HDMI 2.1 Good" or something to say it is the full HDMI 2.1 - all bandwidth, all features and "HDMI 2.1 CRAP" edition if it is only a fraction of the bandwidth or missing features. They'll get away with it by making cabled HDMI 2.1 "compatible"
When consumers start getting confused about what they think their product is and what it does. It leaves a nice gap for exploits. Remember back in the days when cables were being extremely over hyped? I do.

A more widely used feature of eARC is configuring the TV for example to turn off HDMI connected components when the TV is turned off and vice versa. Also switching inputs when devices are turned on or disks are inserted and other of those sorts of features are supported. The latest gaming consoles support some of these features if you look in their settings.
7 months late but thats not a feature or eARC or ARC. its HDMI CEC(Consumer Electronics Control) that enables turning on devices when your TV is turned on or vice versa. eARC and ARC are audio return channels, eARC just being an "extension" of ARC in that it has a higher bandwith and supports 3d Audio(like dolby atmos and similiar) they do have the ability to adjust the volume of components "downstream"(so using the TV removes volume button changes the soundbars volume level instead of the TVs)
10:19 It's not just about tearing, which can be eliminated without variable frame rate. It's to avoid a game dropping from 60 to 30 FPS just because it couldn't quite keep 60 FPS, or having some frames doubled as it slows down and make it choppy. Instead the frame rate can slightly drop without any glitch in motion.
About controlling devices through hdmi. You know how on a laptop monitor you can change the brightness in windows, but on a desktop monitor you change it in the OSD? Yeah you are supposed to be able to do this on a desktop monitor or a tv too. Potentially the monitor OEM could just make a desktop app that had all the functions from the OSD or even changes display profiles based on time or what you are doing.
I love how (apart from the speeds) those "features" were literally possible until they f*cked us over with hdcp. Pretty much creating a problem to sell the solution 🙃

And sometimes those features automatically change on their own So i need to keep checking from time to time To see if they are still on? Annoying.. that pisses me off?? Don't know why and not sure if it's the Tv Or the game content but regardless it shouldn't happen I know the Higher End Tvs like Samsung And Sony don't have that issue... But for the most part it works ok But when your playing and you're in a battle Or fight scene and it cuts off like that For at least a couple seconds Makes me wanna take a baseball bat to it The sound is still going but not screen
I don’t understand this? Didn’t the term “HDMI” already serve the purpose of broadly referencing all versions of the standard? Isn’t the version number supposed to provide specificity? What is the goal here?
ugh, this reminded me of usb back when i was trying to figure out what version to look for in a product description and it turned out it depended if a seller wanted to use a new or old version of the versions...so..bleah anyway this seems more advertiser-friendly and not consumer-friendly...though for international sellers is it really so bad to lie anyway? couldn't they just call it free speech if they had to call it anything at all, which they don't. 🙂

*Thank you for making this one of my most popular videos gets this concern so much in the comments, I can just refer them here*
I do.
[CITATION NEEDED]
I believe it, but I'm really struggling to find the source. You should consider posting citations in the video description at the very least.
I'm looking at the specs sheet overview and don't know what I'm looking for.
The source is the HDMI specification...
Awesome information and a great video. Thank you for clearing up the confusion...👍
At the moment, eARC is the peak of awesomeness for me. I love to use my HomePods as Speakers for the PlayStation. :D
(8:25) But that's still the same number of cables, so I don't see the benefit of that, other than getting more lag while playing on your console.
Do you have a better example where you actually save a cable? Because the HDMI to the audio device is still an audio cable in this scenario.
Really the only other option would be Optical which does not have as much bandwidth as eARC
@@ThioJoe That's true, optical is also often the ONLY option to connect a TV to an older audio system that doesn't have HDMI (like the Logitech Z906).
“When everything is HDMI 2.1, then nothing will be.”
-Syndrome, The Incredibles (probably)
In all honesty this madness comes from the same minds that think men can be women.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
outstanding video. awesome explanartions!
Huzzah! My 7 year old TV set magically has the latest HDMI spec! I don't think I can buy a replacement remote for it any more, but there's apparently no EoL date for marketing BS.
I remember when HDMI was convenient and easy to use…
5:23 what happened to the colour here?
Thank you, this is especially useful for me, because i use my oled tv as pc monitor.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO. THANK YOU
ThioJoe, you have been my to go guy for all the geeky computer stuff and have helped me a ton! I am know faced with a very stressful problem and came here as a last resort in hopes of some direction. In short I am trying to use the space on my HDD and move some of my SSD content there. I have watched video after video and purchased AOMEI in hopes to achieve this. Still no luck so I came to your most recent video to see if I can catch you.
Hello there once again TJ! Hope I'm not bothering you too much. I wonder if you got some time to spare to give me some direction por favor.
step one: ctrl+c
step two: ctrl+v
step three: ?????
step four: profit
Really interesting stuff! So I guess DisplayPort is the last bastion of consistent naming lol.
What about AUX?
@@clashcraft_cc I meant for display technology.
"Started smoking something" probably USB Cables
Cool, we have Dynamic High Dynamic Range now.
That's very dynamic...
First the USB naming and now the HDMI?
Someone needs to build a simplified naming translator for consumers!
I love how (apart from the speeds) those "features" were literally possible until they f*cked us over with hdcp. Pretty much creating a problem to sell the solution 🙃
Welcome back Man.
These consortiums specifying the naming scheme of USB and HDMI are the worst. Very much the most consumer unfriendly you can be
The HDMI people made it a lot easier to buy PC monitors. Just look for the Display Port logo.
DisplayPort is meant for PC monitors anyway, HDMI was always meant for TVs.
Show me where I can get a TV with DisplayPort.
Now I’ll favor DisplayPort when possible
So the HDMI folks saw what the USB were doing, and said “hold my beer”.
Thank for this. We really need it.
I remember your start! You have come a long, long, long way! You have come into your own! A trusted source to save people time and money! As well as tips to keep folks safe online by avoiding scams of all sorts. Please continue what you are doing! Peace!
14:17 I'd been thinking from the start that this sounded a lot like what they did with USB ;)
yay my monitor from 2009 that is 900p 60hz has gotten a new upgrade!
Good as Gold great job 👏
Very thorough and information video about HDMI thanks @ Joe
👍👍
*I have a TCL C735*
It's got all features 100%
But that black screen you were talking bout
that happens as the Tv changes
resolution and settings in inputs
especially in gaming..That's fine..but
sometimes this happens during mid-game
With all features turned on?
And sometimes those features automatically change on their own
So i need to keep checking from time to time
To see if they are still on? Annoying..
that pisses me off??
Don't know why and not sure if it's the Tv
Or the game content but regardless
it shouldn't happen
I know the Higher End Tvs like Samsung
And Sony don't have that issue...
But for the most part it works ok
But when your playing and you're in a battle
Or fight scene and it cuts off like that
For at least a couple seconds
Makes me wanna take a baseball bat to it
The sound is still going but not screen
Stop buying TCL products. Its from a country that's about to be ociscised from society. (CH)
😂This is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while
I don’t understand this? Didn’t the term “HDMI” already serve the purpose of broadly referencing all versions of the standard? Isn’t the version number supposed to provide specificity?
What is the goal here?
ugh, this reminded me of usb back when i was trying to figure out what version to look for in a product description and it turned out it depended if a seller wanted to use a new or old version of the versions...so..bleah
anyway this seems more advertiser-friendly and not consumer-friendly...though for international sellers is it really so bad to lie anyway? couldn't they just call it free speech if they had to call it anything at all, which they don't. 🙂
Learnt few new things , thank you
Joe's back yeeees
I never left 🤔
So, the labeling after 2.1a will be indistinguishable from HDMI 1.0 labeling (when the just said HDMI). Brilliant!
For some reason I was notified on my phone about this video, but not on desktop. In fact, the video isn't even on your channel as of right now on desktop. Weird?
HDMI: Let's pull a USB 3.1
Gen 1 or Gen 2 ? 🙃🙃
Time to get a display port cable and use that instead.
I would like to watch this video, but I absolutely can't because of either a TH-cam bug or some crazy other reason. I'm getting literal thousands of identical ads no matter what I do on this video. There is no way to skip any one of them. No other video is doing it, but I'll probably try again later or some other day. Maybe on a different device or account. This is a serious problem, though.
I tried again and it is all better now. I still don't understand what happened or why.
Great explanation and I agree, they made the decision because of:
1) Money
2) Money
3) More money
Cheers Joe, helps a lot 👍
On a side note, what is the comet screensaver you are using?
I think it's time that we start ignoring HDMI and use Display Port....
Boycott HDMI tell they understand they have screwed up!!
Thanks. Information appreciated.
I just love your work ...
ive seen alot of your videos and was hoping you have a way to fix bios causing a windows laptop display not working because i have a windows laptop that doesnt have working display because of bios. I have no way of connecting an external monitor to it because it only has 1 USB port the Aux port and the chager port
A happy person smashing a TV while giving a thumbs up, photograph
Thank you for the info
Prices scary hugh also with brags about being gold-plated.
4:44 Ultra high and certified, not TDMS, FRL AT 1440 pr lower.
5:41 Dynamic HDR, color information is greater.
7:39 enhanced audio ARC.??
Does ethernet over HDMI tell us that the cable is rated for aARC?
12:29
Thank you, ThioJoe. So much to know.
yes, very
Just imagine phone manufacturers doing this: "From now on, every device is going to be called Galaxy S22."
Not really the same
Why is this any problem? Every device should have recent enough connector anyway or it just doesn't support its specs. Same was back in days with VGA. One definedly needed to check if the cable and card was able to deliver and produce that crisp 160MHz signal.
Miss you Joe
I am pretty sure its done to confuse normies the Gamers and Videophiles among us will have done hours of extensive reaserch on the makes and models of TVs and Monitors they are looking at and what specific features it needs to have with a slight disreguard to the HDMI and Display Port version.
huh??!! how bizarre - thanks for the info.
Board members are usually old people and don't remember all the acronyms. "Let's just make things easier for us and forget about everyone else." some board member probably. /s
I have a device that seems to only work with cables that have the shield pins connected (2, 5, 8, 11) Some cables have them connected and some don't. How do I tell the difference? Is there any definitive label I should be looking for, because it seems like a lottery up until now?
Very good explanation of everything to look for and nice quality lighting too. Thanks.
Nice one Joe.
Thanks, TJ~
