It's hilarious how these seem easier found in Europe than in the US.

Shiners can overwinter as long as your pond is 2’ plus deep.
    No problem.

@@joefishgofish9940 honestly, I wish my nature pond was half as deep as that 😅. I'm probably going to stick some medaka rice fish in their now since they'll likely be outright banned soon.

Nice ! If you can keep them outdoors in the UK, then I can for sure do the same for 1 of my ponds in Mexico. Cheers mate

Woah these guys are insane looking from above! Was planning on putting together a ~150 gallon stock tank pond next summer, I have to consider these guys now. Did you buy those or collect them?

So the rainbow Shiners are native to central and southern states of the USA, they can be found in huge shoals around spring time when they group together to spawn. I am from the UK so of course I had to source them specially, I happen to work for a big aquatics retailer here so I ordered some from a supplier in the Czech Republic. The selectively tank bred ones from Czech are the most colourful males, the other males are cheaper and "lower quality" Shiners probably more similar to wild caught ones

El Gringo gotcha gotcha. I’m in the US. Gonna have to keep my eye open for suppliers. I had no idea they were this pretty from above. I’ve been looking for species that look great from up top for small summer pond setups. Thanks for the info!

whut about saffron shiners, yellow fin shiners, tennesee shiners...red bellied southern dace and enneacanthus: chaetodon, gloriosus and obesus please? (oh yeah and rainbow darters too)
thank you so much I'ma try rainbow shiners in my pond this winter since seeing this ... n see how it go- but yeah whut about these others? ^^
dyu reckon I should brring them in before any brrrreezes from the icy north wind start to bite in?

@@weldereiss7289 I work in the industry, if you are in the UK you can all but give up on getting your hands on the other Notropis species, it seems that the only specimens available of the other species are wild caught and very few people ship wild caught fish from the USA plus there's a lot of protection on their native species which adds extra red tape. Perhaps in the next few years we'll see more being bred elsewhere but for now I think the availability limitations and captive breeding difficulties are inhibiting their distribution. I don't doubt that their hardiness will be somewhat similar though as they seem to come from similar localities from what I've seen. I particularly like the Saffron shiners and I was actually talking about them to my colleague earlier today as it happens. I would probably recommend overwintering them in an outhouse of sorts if you are not in a milder part of the country like I am.

@@elgringo1893 Thank you kindly and yes theyre amaaaazing - I gather theyre bred a lot in Asia for the european trade source?
So far I got N': chrosomus, lutipinnis, rubricroceus and Pimiphales promelas rosy red minnows.., Enneacanthus chaetodon and a hope of some southern red belly dace n some red shiners at some point- gosh I wish we had a Jonah's (!) but if they breed they must be happy I guess... fingers x'd for that !
Darters would rawk tew!! ... As would Elassomas and bluegill, heck... if I could keep Bass, pickerels, muskies n brookies n dolly vardons! ... or Oarfish :O
But anyhoo I'm kinda hoping German, Dutch, Canadian, Scottish and Polish pond keepers info, which I scrape-located by chance, comes true through this winter .. I guess may bring them in in future if any issues -or sooner if research proves suspicion enough to do so ... Just found out about Nanfa so gna checkem out n see what I can learn ...
Here in the E. midlands, UK it's pretty mild (apparently home of the very first garden centre so growing trichocereus cacti outside - mostly successfully for 10 years) but dang the shiners are so expensive its crazy ... worth every penny tho
