I completed the Colchis campaign in August. The hardest early game I have had so far. I had to play with some mods that gave them some extra units tho, I couldn't have thrived merely with pijama men.
CA really squandered their chance with this civilization. The Thracians have an awesome history, and would’ve made for an even cooler barbarian-Greek hybrid faction than Cimmeria, using hoplites and pikes, as well as horse archers and lancer cavalry. They put a ton of effort into the Getae and Ardiaei and then completely neglected these guys. I’ve thought for a while about modding in the new units myself.
Tylis: u waged war on us.... to make ur borders more aesthetically pleasin? Dinios Stanius: look man, this faction is pain, I gotta get what little joy I can out of it
This faction needs some heavy spears just so you can keep the enemy in place, so that you can charge forward with the falx men and swing around with your cavalry. Also I love the idea that some king that’s raiding a city and is like “why’d y’all build your city so far away this is terrible customer service”.
The Thracians, the Mysians, the Getae, the Paeonians, the Pelasgians, and many more, are the descendants of the Odrisians. Zeus was originally called Pelasgian Zeus. We call him Zevs.
In Rome 2 that would be the Getae as they are the Dacian faction, the Odyrissian Kingdom is Thracian. They have some weapon overlap in game and real life, but they are two completely different unrelated people.
@@howitzer551Both are Indo-European peoples. Their language family is believed to be Daco-Thracian and, as the game states in the introduction, Dacians and Thracians are related ethnic groups.
@@De_Futura Lol Indo-European is the largest, by type, language group on the planet so that isn't saying much. As far as I learned you have to go all the way back to Proto-Thracians before you can find a so-called common ancestor. That is where the split comes from. Depending on which historian/geneticist you believe the Thracians in Rome 2 are like 3 ethnic groups away from that. Remember the Persians, Greeks, Celts and even some early Steppe peoples get all up in Thrace. The Dacians for the most part resisted the Celts and had some Steppe interactions, but no one really messes with them until the Romans at least ethnically speaking. Their similarities come much more from them living right next to each other and cultural exchange than a common ancestor. I mean hell some western European languages and some languages from Punjab have the exact same (or very similar) grammar even though they have been removed from each other for a long ass time just because they are both Indo-European languages. So, by that logic, the Portuguese and Indo-Arryan Cultures are closely related, I don't think so.
@@howitzer551 No, by that logic no. Because the Indo Aryan cultures speak a language that diverged from other Indo European languages in Europe at least 4500 years ago. Modern Portuguese and Indo-Aryans are related in a way but because of the time frame is impossible to say closely. It seems that Dacian and Thracian split at the beginning of the Iron Age (1000 BC), so by the beginning of Rome 2, the would have been more closely related than modern Germans and English. Anglo Saxons and the Norse had languages with mutual inteligibility, even though Old English and Old Norse split from Proto germanic at least 1300 years prior 800 AD. And also the Dacians were not inmune to being mixed with Celts or Scythians, but that's beyond the point.
@@howitzer551 The Dacians very likely didnt resist the Celts... Lots of evidence pointing towards that slovenia region being celtic or atleast mixed. and even farther perhaps into Ukraine

I think the point of playing as Raiders and Pirates factions is using mercenaries to make up for your poor roster, and have an agressive start in order to sustain your economy with sack and loot. You can do some advanced mechanics such as hide your money, embezzlement and such in order to have units upkeep for free. It would be interesting for Odrysians to hire some hoplites who could absorb the enemy missiles and reserve the thracians for cyclo charging once the hoplites are starting to lose. But most importantly, the Odrysians really need long range missiles, so hiring some archers or slingers is mandatory. This is just a wild idea, but perhaps it would be interesting to migrate to a province early game where you can hire mercenaries who can complete your roster, otherwise these factions' early game is hell-like.
Hey man, dont doo doo on the Falx- it's unironically one of the best weapons of the classical era. TBH thinking about it- I wonder how it would have fared if taken past them getting conquered by the Romans. Like, its just a spiked sword, sounds pretty effective to me.
It is weird how shit they are in the game, considering how famous Thrakians were for their fighters irl to the point that Greeks and Romans were heavily employing their services.
Dude I can feel the resentment towards faction within your playstyle. It's funny. I do the haha... Haha. In all seriousness, yeah I can relate. There was almost nothing worth playing them for.
