Patience... The right boat, at the right time, in the right place will come. In the meantime, happy to watch the process. I learn every time you find something not quite right. Well worth it as far as I am concerned.
Thank you. Even if people decide we are just a cautionary tale, then so be it. Someone out there will get some value from it. For us, yes the right thing happens...always.
I can’t imagine how hard this must be especially with all the just buy a darn boat comments. I’ve had two boats - one I should not have bought and one that I currently own that is amazing. I looked for 3 years for that one. Keep going! I look forward to your antics out on the water on your own dream boat.
That is interesting about the plywood bulkhead. Something misunderstood about marine plywood, it’s the glue that’s waterproof, but that wood can still rot.
IMO, the main rule for looking for a new boat should be like the main rule for looking for a new job. It's easier to find a new job if you don't quit your old one.
Honestly, I cant understand the unwavering desire for a "performance" boat - the numbers aren't that drastic and the things you remind yourself of the life you love don't involve sailing modestly faster. That said, I hope the next one is the magic one and I look forward to the weather course
You should revisit some of the good boats you have seen the past 2 years that have not sold yet but were a bit high priced(if you have not already). See if the owners are open to a price you are comfortable with now. Maybe blast out a bunch of low ball offers on boats that are high priced you have not seen but have not sold the past year or two. Might get lucky and find someone open to a drastic price reduction, shotgun approach...
Sailing Uma stuck in a shipyard (and ripping the whole interior out of the boat) Sailing Delos building a ship from scratch. Sailing Ruby Rose waiting for a band new one for over 2 years. And now you guys sifting through the world wide market ... I think I`ve got a very detailed picture of the different aspects of boat live by now :-)
Yeh none of this boat stuff is easy. Add to that maintaining a consistent stream of videos and the production behind it, and we have tremendous respect for any of the youtoobers who can keep it going.
Boat shopping for the perfect boat is what you do in between eating tacos. It doesn’t matter if it takes awhile, if you’re rich in tacos! Good boats are like good tacos. Both should have shells that aren’t soggy enough to compromise their structural integrity.
Hi, I’ve been watching a while but this is my first post on your channel. Coincidentally it was my parents place that you stayed at in barrytown on the west coast of nz! I was blown away when they told me you had stayed. We’re also on the boat hunt (as I think my parents told you), we had an offer on a catana in nz that fell through in survey - very scary results with the hull much like your experience here. The timeframe for our trip is dragging. We are feeling the emotional roller coaster like you are, and now the hardest thing seems to be the weight of expectation from our friends, family and work. Also the closing window as our kids get nearer to high school age adds to the pressure. So your video really hit the mark for me and reinforced what I am experiencing. We’re looking all over; carribean, Tahiti, nz, Australia. So many pros and cons to consider it is overwhelming. We were very close to making an offer on a boat in Tahiti but the cons were that we are relatively novice and would be landing in cyclone season (Jan/Feb), we would need to get long stay visas (bureaucratic hurdles) and also the new anchoring restrictions that are coming into force soon may make it very hard for us to cruise. I’d love to see a video on this on pros/cons of Tahiti, but perhaps also things to think about for other boat location options. Carribean is probably the best option for us (like Megan suggested to my parents) but doing such a big transaction in a non-English speaking country such as Martinique scares me and the cost of flights from nz are eye watering. Anyway, hope this post cancels out some of the naysayers. Keep up the good work!
Oh I think I remember! Little Airbnb under the main house? Toward the end of the drive? Rugged piece of coast! Did they ever sell and move to the city? Was that their plan? Anyway, yes, it is a difficult road for those who travel it. We feel for ya. Yes, buying in FP is far far far from simple when you consider the logistics, visas, etc. Even insuring a boat during cyclone season is quite a task....and you have to be ready to get moving from day 1...unless you are somehow able to find a dock. Thank you for the nice comment, and good luck to you guys as well. Say hi to the folks!
@@TheOKellysyes, that was the one. They live in Christchurch and it was a holiday house for them or ‘Bach’ as they call them here. They sold it a few months ago due to increasing risk of insurance retreat on coastal property. But we do miss going to visit, a magical place. I’ll pass on the message. Thanks for your thoughts on FP, all the best!
Very exciting about the sailing weather course! You're the perfect person to do that Nick and will help many people in the years to come to be safer on the water.
Replaced 2 floor bulkheads in my lagoon 440. It's not that bad, but also not a weekend project. After a certain boatyard that rhymes with Schwimmerman Marine blocked my boat miserably and popped all the tabbing across my bulkheads, I had to glass all of them in. I went ahead and replaced some as well. The whole project took me 5 weeks while also working my remote job during the day. Not that it matters. I would have walked too if I saw wet cardboard bulkheads and repairing saildrive seals during inspection. Maybe if I was given the expectation before I flew there... but just showing up and being "surprised" by all this seems shady.
Six years into our ownership of Reboot, and we KNOW now how crazy lucky we got finding her as completely ignorant newbies. She wasn’t even for sale, we had a broker who tracked down the owners and talked them into selling. Before that we’d said no to about a half dozen boats that I could see even as a land lubber were horribly neglected. And our criteria were a lot less stringent than the O’Kelly’s-we just wanted a Lagoon 380. So while my heart is sad for them not finding “the one”, I also know why they aren’t settling.
I am reminded of Gandalf in the Citadel of Minas Tirith countermanding the fleeing orders of Denethor as the hordes of Sauron approach. “Prepare for battle…send these foul creatures to the abyss.” Courage, may you have courage in these troubling times.
OH NO, not again, what a bummer. We still cross the finger, that you will find very soon your boat. If you need a ride to the Bahamas, let us know, we will leave in the next 2-3 weeks from North Carolina. You are very welcome to join us.
Hello fellow Oregon sailors! We have been avid watchers for almost 5 years and I would say you helped us decide to go full time sailing upon retirement. We purchased a DownEast 38 in Long Beach and spent 3+ years rebuilding and upgrading to sail around the world. Anyway, skip ahead and we are here in Ensenada. There is a family owned wonderful little dagger board cat named “Nibi” here that the owner is selling. Some friends here in the marina, Marina coral, went out for a sail on it and had a blast. I’ve talked to owner and he seems to love it and keeps up on its repairs. It’s smaller, only 38’ but is quite roomy inside anyway, I’m sure you get lots of people tagging you with boats. I’m sorry this last one didn’t work out. Don’t lose heart you find it! SV Dulcinea, Brad and robin
I will see if I can find the owner. He is currently living on the boat off and on. We could also do a walk thru for you and send you the video? The owner is a pretty nice laid back guy.
You could build my design for the Fly Sail. It has three integrated parts the tender to test out the concept. the coastal cruiser which could be trailered. The blue water version for stability in large waves. It is a trimaran but sails as a catamaran with the Kiel shaped outer hulls mostly submerged so the waves do not get trapped between hulls.
I think channel Trimaran Spirit took five years to obtain a 54 foot long Chris White designed Hammerhead, and they plan on a couple of years of refit in Australia. But, they got a great boat at a decent price, and, we hope for a similar experience for you two. Thanks.
Those who know boats...and Jason and Cloe on Spirit certainly do...are extremely discerning. Their Hammerhead is pretty rad, and we love their videos....so chill, so informative, and I will tell you since we count them as good friends....they are absolutely as cool in real life.
I just helped a friend look for a boat and I had shopped for a boat before also, it is so frustrating how people will post pictures of the boat back when it was presteen, and tell how good of shape it’s in and then when you get there you look at them and just think “really “. Can’t they just be honest and use current pictures. I came from Montana 5 times before I found my sailboat. Hang in there god speed!
Funny how you can tell who here has owned a boat before. It's tough to find the right one and an insanely big mistake to "just buy a damn boat" when you've grown tired of looking. People do that...they do it all the time...and those are the same people who say, "the best days of boat ownership were the day we bought and the day we sold."
Chin up guys, I’m positive that your dream boat is around the corner. Then bad beats like this are subject of laughter while champagne sailing in the tropics!
In the last two years plus the time you are currently spending I firmly believe you would already be most of the way through building your own. I hope we get to meet on the water someday ! Best wishes from Montana
I'm here for your story telling and it sounds like I may learn a thing or two about weather... I grew up in a boating family on Puget Sound and I learned a lot about boat construction. The one thing my father taught me is that all boats can have their issues, and we love them, but wooden boats (even if it's just a wood core) always turn into a passion project sooner or later. I passed on a free 44' ketch because of it's wood core and a poorly done repair that would eventually doom the hull to rot. It was heartbreaking. Keep your heads up and swiveling!
Anything is fixable, but passion only goes so far. One of the biggest mistakes one can make is thinking that repairing/replacing core is a simple thing. It just isn't. You need to know what you are doing, you need the right materials, you need the right equipment, and you need a stable/predictable atmosphere and work area. Keeping our heads up for sure! Cheers!
Can understand your frustration, and the time spent chasing is not coming back. My 2 cents; you obviously enjoy staying in the Bahamas. So what boat is needed for that? It's pretty obvious that you'll not find a modern cat with your budget. So I'd go for a modern production mono hull of good quality. Or even an aluminium boat to be safe.
Thanks for the visibility, your guidence on setting expectations, the questions we should ask, the deeper dives in the structural condition and mechanical condition, etc. of the craft, boat. Wondering to myself if boat manufacturers build to 60-70 percent completion, which would allow me to finish a boat build? Wondering if there are boats going throught rehab, repairs that owners are looking to sell. I guess I'm wondering if their is anyway to hit the ground running on boats that require some work? I'm not familiar with these things. Lots of hopium for your guys and everyone looking! Thanks so much, Mark
Why do you want to go sailing? Again Lots of time & cash spent looking for the memories on a new ⛵ its time to change it up, why not focus on charters, how's and in and outs with charter boats. You both are great teachers and would really help others to get on the water and enjoy their memories 😊
That's a good idea. In terms of time and money spent...we have had an awesome time...seen and done things we'd never have if we weren't looking. Met incredible friends we'd never have met otherwise. So...it sort of depends on how you look at it. We will stick with the positives.
You could have built a boat in the amount of time you two have spent looking for one. I considered it until I read in book on building boats that the average 40 foot mono hull takes about ten thousand man hours to build. I figured I'd be to old to sail it by the time I finished. Good luck with the search.
Well, you're a bit optimistic. If we'd started the day we sold Clarity, we might be a little over halfway by now. Regardless, we aren't boatbuilders. Tons of respect to anyone who is.
Looking forward to the "weather for sailors" video. I'm going to have to download it so I can watch it as I see the clouds on the horizon. I hope you find the boat you want. I bought a 40 year old Nauticat monohull motor sailer I'm getting ready for cruising. Good bones, but not properly equipped. I'll know the boat well when we take off, one day...
Ok, now I’m feeling a little “creepy” about the Megan bath or coffee swim up suggestion….you’ve convinced me! No better time than the present, I’m buying a kayak and paddling the three rivers!!! No, I’m not going to do that, the rivers smell funny and there’s shark sized catfish that will swallow you whole. Thanks for the quick turnaround on your next video, my wife has a crush on Nick, (she’s a weather nerd) and you both know how I feel about Megan. I hope you find a boat that makes you happy, but we’ll watch whatever you two put up on the tube. (If you want to adopt us, we could bring a million dollars to your budget but I think we’d be more of a liability than an asset, besides The O’kellys/O’Raibles isn’t a good name for a TH-cam channel. ❤
I am reminded of tale of Agamemnon the Meek in the classic Chickens Are Not Just For Eating countermanding the fleeing orders of Hangpoo as the hordes of poultry approach. “Prepare for battle…send these foul creatures to the abyss.” Courage, may you have courage in your private places so special to you and of course, your chickens. .
Buying new? Maybe they just don't make them like before, examples Wynn's, or Travel Sketch (650+ days on the hard fixing a new boat) Seems the boat builders have caught up to the RV industry in not being able to integrate parts and finish the entire project without hic-ups. Buying used and well your experiences are telling.
Going the way of the RV industry? Wow, sure hope not. No one would tolerate a brand new $1M airplane with "bugs to work out." There has to be a middle ground.
I know boat buying is sometimes a search a long one but surely there is one out there. Or are you looking for something that does not exist! I would have given up on searching in the time you guys have been looking and moved on with life. That said still love the channel and hope that dream boat becomes reality soon.
Since you are getting to be pros at going to see boats in exotic locations, and since you are already there. Maybe add in a couple of days to explore and list 10 fun things to do on a business trip in "exotic location". Anything from ice cream to renting a RIB to see that perfect beach to a perfect B&B in a comfy little town. It might get a few more vids out there a year so we all don't think you threw in the towel 🤣 don't worry we all know you are too stuborn. Cheers!
Two years...all the money you've spent traveling the last two years could have paid for a sizeable chunk of a new custom boat that would be in the process of being splashed...the searching was kinda fun for awhile but now it seems like the 'search' is gonna be the permanent objective of this channel...I subbed to watch a sailing adventure...If I see another 'spa' video I'm thinkin' I'm gonna hang myself...sayin'...
Your humor can be so corny.... I LOVE IT! 😂 Good luck with the boat hunt. Just think - Time and Space is continuously working with you to manifest the perfect boat at the perfect time! 🙏om mani padme hum🙏 (no, that doesn't translate to "bribe the universe" as some have thought lol). Hey that weather course sounds fun - so good luck with that too! Cheers guys!
Following, keep the faith! Like trying to pick the best stock or basket of stocks to buy. So many choices. Stressful! Nice shrink, hope you got the 'discount' rate.
We love this channel and we have taken onboard a lot of your advice for our own journey. But Damit, how many boats have you got to look at ? Maybe you’re looking for a boat that’s too perfect. In this case yeah totally understandable
Hope disappointed is hard to deal with. However, if the hope is moderated with balance and the expectation that it may not be realized. In other words, moderated hope is the best option. One more note: There will be economic down turn in Europe and other parts of the world. This will drive boat prices further down. The Ukraine war will soon be a serious drag on many economies in Europe. Poland is typical. When you spend a lot on war, there is a less for the good things in life.
We've looked into it. We know a few people who have done it. So no, we know we wouldn't be done by now. Maybe halfway. Also, we know ourselves well enough to know we aren't boatbuilders. Tremendous respect to all boatbuilders!
@TheOKellys okay granted many of the channels that I see are people that are willing to put in a lot of sweat. I really do wish you luck, but your formula of boat readiness vs price point might be difficult at best.
If I had $2 million dollars I would send it to you and ask you to buy "me" a boat. I would come and sail with you for a week or two once a year and see how you are taking care of "my" boat. When you got tired of sailing "my" boat I would sell it. Only if life would be so glorious. I sure wish you the best in fulfilling your dreams.
Okay. Let's see if I can beat you to it. The real estate broker has been hired. After years of research and an endlessly changed mind, I think I've worked out a shortlist of boats and locations. On your marks. Get set. GO!
Wow! Ok ! It's ben so long I have forgotten what boat ya'll are looking for. Could of built a boat by know. Maybe it's time to move to a tropical Island where you have the ocean surrounding you. You can go snorkeling or diving with the dolphins or whales 🐋, and the weather is just Perfect 👌 all the time. Is there such a place? WHY YES! There is, it's called the Big Island of Hawaii. Just a thought. Ok until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Aloha and cheers 🍻 P.s. If you want to know what it is like, Let me know, ya'll can come and stay with us. And see what a simple life is like in the Middle of the Pacific Ocean!
Can’t afford a new boat. Don’t want to build one. Can’t afford a used boat in good condition. The boats you can afford aren’t worth buying…. Maybe you need to accept you can’t or won’t afford a boat and transition to a travel channel.
It'll be three years in May since you released your video of selling your previous boat. I admire your lifestyle, you certainly seem to be enjoying life and traveling around and so I keep watching and wish you all the best, but I do feel a certain disconnect when you sometimes hold yourselves out as examples regarding boat buying (many of the videos you have released have this theme) despite... you know... the unfortunate circumstances in that regard. I don't mean to be a negative Nancy here, but we're kinda far from the 'go now' philosophy that you yourselves were espousing not too many years ago. There are many cautionary tales of people who purchase a lemon boat, but I wonder if you both are starting to become the cautionary tale of the endless search for perfection or a 'deal'. Maybe it is time to just buy a modest boat without using a majority of your capital and head up to Alaska per Megan's joke.
Valid criticism. The vast, vast majority of consulting clients we've worked with are looking for their first boat. A few are looking for their first catamaran. Finding one of those is a lot easier than finding what we have been looking for and we would never suggest to one of these clients that they buy the kind of boat we are looking for for ourselves. If feedback and success rate are an indication, I would say that we have done a good job for our 200+ clients. When it comes to our own search, our experience is VERY similar to other experienced sailors looking for something specific. A lot of experienced owners we know have taken 2, 3, 5 years to find their next boat. Time to buy a modest boat? Yeh, maybe.
Go to surfshark.com/okelly for 4 extra months of Surfshark at an unbeatable price!

Again
Lots of time & cash spent looking for the memories on a new ⛵ its time to change it up, why not focus on charters, how's and in and outs with charter boats.
Modern rendition of the Flying Dutchman. Nevertheless I'm learning a lot. Thanks.
I made this mistake! Just a little deck work I thought....LOL, I own a moisture meter now and a very wet boat.
Really sorry to hear it. Yeh wet deck core...insanely difficult work. Good luck to you!
Congratulations! Weather course incoming....
Lol, cheers mate
I am reminded of tale of Agamemnon the Meek in the classic Chickens Are Not Just For Eating countermanding the fleeing orders of Hangpoo as the hordes of poultry approach. “Prepare for battle…send these foul creatures to the abyss.” Courage, may you have courage in your private places so special to you and of course, your chickens. .
lol
BUT...how was that boat advertized originally? Deceptive? Did owners KNOW about all those deficiencies and not disclose them?
Thank you for the kind words.
Happy to see the new video. Love the use of whiteboard and paper for the process( okellys tech channel - how did I miss it).
It's all Megan! Creative to the max!
Cheers!
Ha! We may do just that!
wonder how those stringers got that wet. I mean clearly it wasn't a bit of water that got them to that state :0
Gratitude is a God thing, great teamwork 👍
Indeed. Thank you.
Hey guys! So wife and I have been watching your boat search saga and really wanna know what made you decide to sell your previous boat??
They decided they wanted a "performance cruiser" (I think designer Robert Perry coined that term) rather than a "condo catamaran".
Thought we had a deal on the next one. Owner had two. He decided to keep both boats.
Your humor can be so corny.... I LOVE IT! 😂 Good luck with the boat hunt. Just think - Time and Space is continuously working with you to manifest the perfect boat at the perfect time!
🙏om mani padme hum🙏
(no, that doesn't translate to "bribe the universe" as some have thought lol). Hey that weather course sounds fun - so good luck with that too! Cheers guys!
Thank you for the kind words. The right thing is happening...always and forever. With the boat or no boat, it will be the right thing as well.
Looked at many. Deals on 8, surveyed 5
@ doesn’t seem that many in reality I guess I’m just impatient to see you cruising the waves again :-)
no, you're right...we've looked at a lot of boats. Too many. Maybe the name of the next one needs to be Patience...
Hit that like button.
Smash it. Lol, thanks.
You may have to raise your budget from $200 to achieve a realistic goal. YOU NEED A BIGGER BUDGET
How about a change of tack. Trawler motor yacht? 😏
What it Takes to Keep the Cruising Dream Alive? #1 answer, a boat!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
boats need a lot of maintenance. So a used boat is likely to need a lot of upgrades and repairs. I'd rather build one or restore one myself.
What is your list of needs for your boat so that engineers know what to build next?
Hope disappointed is hard to deal with. However, if the hope is moderated with balance and the expectation that it may not be realized. In other words, moderated hope is the best option. One more note: There will be economic down turn in Europe and other parts of the world. This will drive boat prices further down. The Ukraine war will soon be a serious drag on many economies in Europe. Poland is typical. When you spend a lot on war, there is a less for the good things in life.
Sage advice. Thank you
build your own, would have been done by now.
We've looked into it. We know a few people who have done it. So no, we know we wouldn't be done by now. Maybe halfway. Also, we know ourselves well enough to know we aren't boatbuilders. Tremendous respect to all boatbuilders!
You are experience sailors, therefore I don’t think you ever buy another boat .
lol
YIKES !
indeed!
Why is it every other channel looking for a boat is able to find one....... and you two are not?
Tell me more about "every other channel" and maybe I can answer you.
Haha. All of us are just stewards and caretakers, regardless of whose name is on title.
at this point maybe a cheaper boat just to hit the water?
yeh, maybe. I think there is a misperception that this is an affordability issue. It is not.
@@TheOKellys also that was easy for me to say I'm not in your shoes great show .
Get a beautiful 55 ft mono hul and travel in style, no more of this "villa on canoes" ;-)
lol. good one.
Was this a Catana?
I bet it is, there is only one old one on the market way out there in French Polynesia.
womp womp...
It's getting old...like the channel..but..jumping the shark here...imo
Agreed
Okay. Let's see if I can beat you to it. The real estate broker has been hired. After years of research and an endlessly changed mind, I think I've worked out a shortlist of boats and locations. On your marks. Get set. GO!
Monohull
You need to by a old leopard like clarity just get back to cruising ,
Are ya all having another income ??
Wow!
Ok until next time,
Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
Aloha and cheers 🍻
P.s. If you want to know what it is like, Let me know, ya'll can come and stay with us. And see what a simple life is like in the Middle of the Pacific Ocean!
Sounds good!
Can’t afford a new boat. Don’t want to build one. Can’t afford a used boat in good condition. The boats you can afford aren’t worth buying…. Maybe you need to accept you can’t or won’t afford a boat and transition to a travel channel.
How would you know what we can or can't afford?
Yeh, maybe.
Should of kept the last boat,
Yeh, maybe
