- Murray's Mill Historic District is a national historic district located near Catawba, Catawba County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 20+ contributing buildings near the rural Town of Catawba. It contains the mill buildings, four residences and complementing structures associated with the milling operations and the Murray family. They were built between the 1880s and mid-20th century. Notable buildings include the large two-story frame mill (1912-1913), store building (1890s, 1930s), wheathouse (1880s), John L. Murray House (1913), a large gable roof frame barn (1930s), Lloyd Murray House (1935), and William Murray House (1880s).
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The Catawba County Historical Association owns Murray's Mill and the other buildings and operates them as a museum that is open weekends mid-march through November and Thursday and Friday June through September. Visitors can see the mill's grindstones and milling equipment. The 1913 John Murray House has been restored and furnished with period artifacts, and the 1880s wheathouse is used as an exhibit gallery. The general store is the museum's gift shop.

Old gristmill's are very interesting and I love the history.Thank you for sharing I enjoyed your video.
What an exceptional video. The lady is so up on everything and she is friendly. A great story teller. She shows so much respect to the people and things of the past as you do. So knowledgeable. What a national treasure she is,you are and the Mill etc. Thank you kind Sir. Hugs to both of you! Wonderful!
Our ancestors worked hard to get what we have today. If anyone wants to live truly off grid throw away all modern conveniences, generators, solar power, plumbing ect… We are spoiled by technology myself included. I remember growing up that if anyone came to visit my mama and daddy would make a pot of coffee and they would sit at the dinner table talking. Kids would go outside and play. I miss those days. My grandchildren know that when they come to mimi’s house to visit that there will be no tv and no cell phones. People want to complain about children not listening and having no respect well look at all the things that we give them such as cell phones, tv’s, game systems ect… Children today don’t have to work for what they have it is giving to them.
You're talking about living off of the land which is different than living off of the grid. And I have grown tired of people who claim that their children are raised right, and then generalize the rest as being lazy and spoiled. When your grandchildren come to visit, who are they visiting... just you. How long do they visit for. I'll bet that they have access to all of the modern conveniences of this era and that just like most parents ensure that gramma is the focus when Gramma is in their presence. Did you grow up with a radio, a television, a car, in a home without a hearth for cooking,a fireplace for heating ?? Did you chop wood, milk a cow, saddle and shoe a horse, make your own nails, mill your own wood, build your own home, down field with seed, hunt for your food, etc ??? Get off of your pedestal and stop dissing on today's youth. My parents were of the opinion that their kids should have it better, easier than they did
Ms Jennifer is so knowledgeable and articulate that she really brought the history of Mr Murray's mill to life. Bless her heart!

Glad there are people interested in preserving history. Very interesting John. My grandfather built and ran a general store back in the 50's in Southern Illinois. The building is still in use but nothing preserved except for a few photos. Thanks for sharing. It's important that the history of these people and places be kept alive.
Growing up in Statesville, I loved visiting Murray's Mill. The general store across the store is very worthwhile to visit too.

That was really interesting. I'm sure it must've been tough keeping the mill in operation. If it broke down there would be 2 miles of angry customers. 👍thumbs up!
So enjoyable to watch! Thank you.
Excellent work, stocking the store with locally made products.
