I Don't Know Why I Bother!

This jam-packed episode challenges your ability to spot the difference between handheld photography and tripod photography. The question is, do you really need a tripod for landscape photography?
We take you on an adventure into an enchanted forest that I've decided to name 'Chuntering Ponce Falls'. Don't ask why. As always, I'm chasing the hope of encountering fog, but as you know, it's never guaranteed.
We're so impressed with the gnarly trees that we decide to spend the night, but Amanda's gassy outbursts are more than I can tolerate. We get into a bit of an argument over chocolate consumption, and she lays down the rules.
The next morning, I explain two really important landscape photography techniques to help improve your compositions, but will I get the shot that I'm after?
Will Amanda accept my high-quality breakfast standards and what's up with the stink pipe in the camper? After 4 hours of sleep what are our faces like and why are my bedtime stories rejected?
There's really only one way to find out.
    Hit play, then hit like.
    Thanks for watching

Towards the end your main camera was on a tripod while the screen was being filmed by another camera… on a tripod. The whole setup was recorded by a third camera, which was being held very steady, perhaps on ANOTHER tripod? The answer to the question is therefore NO, you don‘t need a tripod, you need THREE😛

This topic was so timely. I just did a camping trip to Bodega Bay and the only thing I forgot was my tripod which I was so bummed about. I was able to get some shots but it limited what I wanted to take, especially astro. I feel as though my handhelds weren't as sharp but I might just be picky, I def do miss my tripod when I don't have it. It's also a great way to slow down and enjoy the scene.

Tripods. Yes I have one. It's no a Frodo (Manfrotto) but it's sturdy and has a quick release bracket. BUT for days when I just don't want the bulk of it I have a bean bag thing (with tripod screw) and it's really handy. I always keep it in my camera bag 👍

I do most of my photography hand held as most of my cameras have IBIS, but there are times when photographing landscapes that I need to keep my aperture at F8 or higher and a low ISO, To be able to get a sharp photo in lower light a tripod is a necessary tool.

Absolutely love that final shot. Stunning. With regard to handholding: I do (did) often handhold but was often disappointed with the sharpness, especially as I have got older. It is OK for you whippersnappers but when you start getting on a bit, it becomes a tad more difficult to hold it steady and it seems to have got worse since I bought the Nikon D850.

Will we photographers ever learn Gavin. Never trust the weather forecast. And you could have had a few more hours kip and woke up without a face with two bags of spanners beneath your eyes. I rarely use a tripod, but then again I’ve got hands that are rock steady. Always exhale when you press the shutter button. Press it between the exhale and the inhale. Ideal for getting sharp images handheld or assassinating your target as a sniper. Call of Duty anyone!! My mind was blown early into the video. A CADBURYS DAIRY MILK MINI EGG EDITION!!! Whatever next.

Another smashing video Gavin, I did love that waterfall but the trees were super too. Great colours and those roots over the rocks were quite amazing. I really liked our original composition because to me it wasn’t like a cat, although I could see where you got that from, but to me it looked like a gorilla pounding through the jungle. I like to get it done and find other compositions And then move on to another subject.

Great minds thinking alike ... only yesterday I was shooting some handheld woodland. It wasn't my plan; I visited a modern art museum set within a forest and I left my tripod in the car. I found the composition later, out on the grounds. I'm guessing you boosted the ISO high enough for that super-wide tree image to get a hand-holdable shutter speed.
    Addendum: I was right!

At 23:13 It looks like a handheld panorama or cropped into a wide panorama aspect ratio. I know you'll think it's heresy, but you could have done a HDR composite shot at @4:30, that way you'd have a chance to recover the blown out sky beyond the canopy. I can't say it would have worked but you could have tried to see if it would. That tree at 25:22, the same one with the blown out sky, to me it looks like the "claw game" at a carnival or airport where you try and grab the prize and never can, kind of reminiscent to your desire for the perfect composition of that tree and boulder with fog, you just can't "grab it".

A tripod helps refine your composition with consistent accuracy.
I shoot a lot of hand held from a kayak. Too often the 'best' shot of a sequence - whether it be sharpness, reflections, fleeting light etc - isn't the best composed, or framed shot. I can end up with two good shots, neither of which is perfect. If it were possible (like on land) a tripod would help my chances of the 'perfect' shot.

  • @vantagepointphotography
    @vantagepointphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First, video is awesome and hilarious. Second, the question about the tripod. Yes, I need it. If you like sharpness all through out the foreground, mid and background then you need a tripod and some of us like that kind of picture, I am one of them. However for example Kim Grant shoots handheld very often and she is second to no one.
I have to tell you man, I could not stop laughing. When I saw the tree on top of the rock I realized where you were. Then I was waiting for you to mention the name of that waterfall because it does has a weird name and no one know how to say it correctly. The easy way out is.... I rather don't give away the location. LOL.

From the age when trees were able to walk. Yes, you do need tripod for: long exposures (starry nights, lots of bracketing...), self-portraits (wherever the camera has to be out of reach), extreme telephoto lenses...What you DON'T need is exactly what you have with every camera nowadays: 194 modes of AF, so you cannot leave it at your home.
