This was such an epic and beautiful finale. Fantastic reaction, cannot wait for Christmas episode. The 1st and 12th doctor on screen together is just fantastic.
Growing up Capaldi was a huge fan of Doctor Who, specifically the First Doctor. During Capaldi's run we've seen him bring back so many old school elements of the show like the stern grumpy side of the Doctor, and the classic Daleks, mondasian Cybermen and a bearded Master. For Capaldi's last episode it made sense for him to share screen time with his favourite Doctor, the First Doctor, which is pretty much why they brought David Bradley back considering he played the part so well in that Docu-drama.
Capaldi wanted to do an episode with the first doctor just like how he wanted to go against the original cybermen. He was a big fan of the show back when it started
@@JustSoShayla Hahaha alright! Well it isn't really VERY scary. Mostly at a level what would scare teenagers. I really like a lot of the actors in it, especially the rat catcher and 2 of the servants of the main villain, and of course David Bradley. "As soon as I click this button, the end begins". Epic parting words. I also like that you went from "I really like this show" last episode to "I hate this show" at the start of this one. :P This is a great finale but it's been two years since it aired and I'm still annoyed there was no Rory in that companions montage. I know I've mentioned this before I like seeing how engaged you are during Peter's speeches. You really are the best reactor, Shayla.
ChanCeNecK I hope more people in later years will come to love Moffat’s era more and appreciate all he did for the show. He’s written by far the most stories of any writer, and only one was a pretty big miss for me (Doctor, Widow, Wardrobe). I don’t think there are many other writers that understand the Doctor as well as he does, and it allowed for some seriously interesting storytelling.
AubreySciFi I’ve never been bothered by his approach to the First Doctor. It’s just a bit of fun, and we know it’s not really supposed to be taken too seriously. He could’ve removed maybe a couple of the sexist jokes, but outside of those comments I think his use and portrayal of the First Doctor is pretty well done. He also gave him a better final line.
@@lucasdolding6924- Not meant to be taken seriously? That's not the way I read his performance there. (Not totally David Bradley's fault of course. He was written and directed to do it that way.) but, If that episode was your only experience of the first Doctor you'd think he was a sexist douche bag. And as someone who's seen his era I don't think it does Hartnell's Doctor justice. I wondered why companion Bill even bothered to hug him near the end as he'd been such a jerk the whole time. And this adventure was taking place at the end of his run not the beginning. Hartnell had an arc going from touchy and sometimes abrasive to warm and endearing but one who never suffered fools and could sass people who needed it. (But Hartnell always counterpointed it with humor that offset the negatives even in the early days. I saw none of that in Bradley's performance in TUAT, or the recreated scenes in AAISAT. I get the impression that he never reviewed Hartnell's episodes or he would have seen that. The only performance of his as the First Doctor that really was spot on IMO was for his Big Finish adventures. "The First Doctor Box set". Anyway, it's up to opinion either way, and if you were satisfied with TUAT, that's fine.
One of the things I love about Peter Capaldi as the Doctor is his passionate speeches. The way he delivers them got to me more than any speech by Matt Smith or David Tennant. Him telling the Masters why he does what he does spoke to me as a person who tries to do the right thing. RIP Missy (for now). Bill's departure made me sad. I wanted more of the character but unfortunately, life had other plans. David Bradley's return as the Doctor at the end of the episode was a delightful surprise. I had heard the news of the return but I thought it would happen at the start of the Christmas special. One of my favorite Doctor Who cliffhanger endings.
I am SO chuffed @5:28 that you included the full speech in your reaction... As powerful as the one from "The Zygon Inversion". Twelve really delivers what The Doctor is all about. ;)
Meanwhile: that regeneration scene has got to be a (brilliant, for us oldies!) throwback to 4-5 and 5-6, especially so since it's Missy (the Master) that throws the final spark! Classic Who SPOILERS... 4-5: th-cam.com/video/l3w-BHsXt4I/w-d-xo.html and 5-6: th-cam.com/video/qvAenK95PfQ/w-d-xo.html
There are so many callbacks to classic Who in this episode. The flashbacks to previous companions echoes the regeneration from Tom Baker (#4) to Peter Davidson (#5). The Master was in that story too. Logopolis was the episode. Hard to believe that was all the way back on 21 March 1981. Would you like a Jelly Baby? :)
Ah... Well here we go, nearly there. You have definitely watched the second part by now and are probably on the next Doctor. This finale was the hardest for me, largely because Peter struck a cord with me that no doctor ever had. I grew up watching Doctor who when it started in 2005. 10 was my undisputed favourite until series 8. 12 didn't click with me for a long time, but just through dialogue with him and Clara everything clicked and made sense. His character ark is I would say, undisputedly the best Doctor who has ever had. Look at him in the Episode "into the Dalek" when he treats people like collateral's, and look at him in this episode. And it all makes sense, they way he has grown, and how he has done it. This was supposed to be 12's final episode, but the new showrunner was not ready to start, and if they didn't have an episode they would have lost their slot on Christmas Day (which it turns out didn't matter because the new showrunner Chibnall said they had "ran out of ideas" for Christmas specials - but anyway) Moffatt said he would do one last episode at the last episode (to save Christmas!), and we got Twice Upon a time. You are absolutely right about Missy, Gomez was fantastic - my favourite incarnation of The Master Point blank. Regardless of how people feel about Jodie as the Doctor, Michelle Gomez proved, changing a Time Lords gender can be absolute perfection. Missy was and always will be truly glorious. One of the saddest things is that the Doctor will never know that Missy was on her way back to help him. That cuts deep Thank you for sharing your reactions with us
About David Bradley being in it: there was an interview with Steven Moffat where he says exactly how he got the idea. He was struggling with ideas for a Christmas special as he had planned for the series finale to have Peter Capaldi's regeneration. Then at some convention there was a fan question about bringing back previous Doctors. He said he would like to see the personality clash with the first Doctor, but joked that "William Hartnell doesn't return our calls" (he died in 1975), at which point Peter Capaldi suggested David Bradley. At that point Steven Moffat realised exactly what to do for a Christmas special.
Wonderful reaction to one of the best stories in Doctor Who history! Nice little fun fact: the former companions "speaking to him" ("DOCTOR!" "DOCTOR!"...) is a nice reference back to the 4th Doctors regeneration into the 5th at the end of "Logopolis"! Very excited for TUAT! Oh god!
Your series of "WHAT?!?!" was worthy of David Tenant! Brava! Totally agree with you about the divine Bill as well as Nardol. Some never cottoned to them but I always liked both a lot. Wish we knew more about Heather. Like if she'd been a companion for awhile. Or showed up again.
Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez... John Simm as well. Featuring Pearl Mackie and Matt Lucas... The most poignant season finale ever. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Also THIS cliffhanger !!!!
Well, Capaldi's first Doctor when he was watching the series as a kid was William Hartnell's Doctor, and he's also a fan of the Mondasian Cybermen. So, Peter got two presents at the end of his run. Being in an episode with the 1st Doctor and being in an episode featuring the 1st generation Cybermen. Also we had a nice call-back to two classic series regeneration related stories in the final TARDIS scene of this episode. When the Doctor flashes back on his companions that was a nod to the 4th Doctor's Regeneration scene in "Logopolis" (Now available on Blu-Ray, in the season 18 box set!). And when he wakes up and says "Sontarans, perverting the course of human history!" that was the first line that Tom Baker's 4th Doctor ever said post regeneration in "Robot" (Also, now on Blu-Ray in the season 12 box set!). Then of course the obvious new Who regeneration references "I don't want to go" and "When the Doctor was me".
It was Capaldi who gave Moffat the idea of bringing David Bradley back to play the 1st Doctor. It was an iterview at New York ComicCon one year. Moffat talked about how he thought it was a shame that William Hartnell was dead because he couldn't return to the show, and Capaldi casually said that you could get David Bradley instead. Moffat thought "yeah, you could"...and did. The footage of that exchange is on TH-cam somewhere.
So glad you saw An Adventure In Space and Time before this episode and the next one. It makes them so much better, and David Bradley is always great, whether it be Thrones, Potter, or Doctor Who.
It is the last of Missy. Also a bit of context, David Bradley was so good playing William Hartnell in An Adventure in Time and Space who was The First Doctor, they brought him in to be The First Doctor.
at Comic Con once Steven Moffat was asked what he would most want to do if he could do anything and that was to do a episode with the first doctor.... Peter then replied "Why don't we just get David Bradley then?" and there you go Twice Upon a Time.... although this episode also wasn't meant to be as Peter was suppose regenerate in this episode but Chris Chibnall decided he didn't want his first episode as show runner to be a Christmas special so Steven finally got his wish due to happenstance
Hi Shayla, the Xmas Special is important for lot`s of reasons in general, but especially for me. :) I don`t know if you know or realised, as the Dr. was fighting the Cybermen, he was mentioning all the previous occasions he had defeated them by name.
Not sure if you've already watched it but there's an incredible video called 'decade of doctor who' by john smith which I think you would love. It was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the shows return and it's honestly one of my favourite fan videos.
Great reaction! Absolutely love this episode. And the Doctor's "It's Just Kind" speech is probably my favorite Doctor speech. And the reveal of David Bradley as the First Doctor was great as well! Looking forward to the next one!
My favourite Doctor Who era Best doctors Best tardis Best master Best screwdriver Best theme tune Most importantly best writing He knows how not to keep it simple Best music even tough that was Murray Gold
I’m already prepared to cry in the next reaction from Peter’s amazing performance. Recently I’ve been rewatching the goodbye scene and it gets me so emotional. 12 was my doctor for sure, which is weird considering I watched it since 2005 and he was the first doctor that I fully understood.
Fun fact, since this was Steven Moffat's last series, he joked about making Missy pregnant with the Master's child. And just drop it on the lap of the next show runner.
Shout out to the Murray Gold for the music in this episode. It's incredible. This is my all time favourite Doctor Who season finale, so I'm glad you liked it! Pay no attention to the people trying to shitcan Season 11 in the comments. You'll form your own opinion, just as you always do. Remember how many people hated Clara!
I agree. The same type of people (not necessarily the _exact_ people, but the same _type)_ were shitcanning everything that Steven Moffat did after RTD left and now they're singing his praises and have turned their negativity toward Chris Chibnall and Jodie. Here's a prediction: Fast forward 4 or 5 years and these same types of people will be whining about the _next_ showrunner and whoever the Doctor is while talking about Chibnall and Jodie in the highest regard. It happens every time like clockwork.
I can remember people moaning during Series One about RTD's "gay agenda"! 🙄 I don't like all of DW and don't expect others to either, but I really don't get the people who seem to keep watching it in order to hate it, let alone then insisting on spreading their misery all over the place...
It’s Christmas in June on Thursday! ❄️ Can’t believe we’re already here! It really is the end of an era, the Moffat era may have had its flaws but it’s ultimately my favourite of the show. Series 8-10 especially are the golden years for me! Also, it was a nice touch to see all the faces in the montage. A nice callback to the fourth Doctor’s regeneration.
Should I reach the end of my life (and ain't noone's missing that), I absolutely want Shayla to sigh and whisper "The end begins" into my ear as my last good moment.
You said "Pooie." I love it. I believe someone made a joke to Moffat about he could put the first Doctor into an episode because David Bradley did so well with the part and he eventually made it come true.
What makes the Doctor's final stand feel so impactful is that we so rarely ever see him in direct line-of-fire. The Doctor often only beats his enemies by outsmarting them, either by talking them down or turning their plans back on them; the fact he's facing these Cybermen head-on shows you that he's _finally_ out of options, that the only thing he _can_ do is fight until he dies.
So, basically what happened was Steven Moffat was going to have the Doctor regenerate at the end of The Doctor Falls but then found out that Chris Chibnall wanted to start his run at the beginning of a new season and not with an Xmas special. So Moffat was like “Hell, no. We’ve got to have a Christmas special!” and rewrote the ending of the episode in order to add one last story in before he left. Also, the first Doctor regenerated after a story featuring the first appearance of the cybermen (from Mondas).
12:15, the same bewildered face, every fan around the world did, seeing that scene the first time ;) The first Doctor is well loved by the fans Now with David Bradley playing "William Hartnell" they had the choise to do the remaining stuff, planed for the first Doctor, before William Hartnell got sick and wasnt able to play the part any longer. They also did 3 new "Audio" Series with the first Doctor, very well done, close to the original.
You will sort of be introduced to Ben and Polly 2 of the companions from the 1st and 2nd doctors era. The first ever companions to see cybermen and regeneration. They only appear in recaps and had actors recast for remake scenes too
the more I watch this episode the better it gets. I wasn't expecting to cry during this reaction, which means that the next one will be... insanely difficult. That was me for the previous reaction.
That has happened to me the last 4 finale's! Finally today I have no plans for the morning so I could watch it without guilt
:)
No matter how dead he/she is, the Master can always come back. Time Lords be like that.
When the master was wheeling the doctor around in a wheelchair, straight away, it brought back memories of the 10th doctor
Capaldi wanted to do an episode with the first doctor just like how he wanted to go against the original cybermen. He was a big fan of the show back when it started
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what a blown mind looks like!
By the way: if you like David Bradley, watch The Strain.
I hate scary things.
@@JustSoShayla Hahaha alright!
Well it isn't really VERY scary. Mostly at a level what would scare teenagers.
I really like a lot of the actors in it, especially the rat catcher and 2 of the servants of the main villain, and of course David Bradley.
(The only one that I don't like is the son of the protagonist.)
You really are the best reactor, Shayla.
i know. would have loved to see rory again especially because amy and rory are my favourite companions
Thank you :)
Michelle Gomez as Missy for me was great so well played. Hopefully they will bring her back in the future.
Well the doctor definitely didn't get rid of all the cybermen so maybe she comes back as a cyborg
NO! MALE MASTER NEXT!
Truly an epic finale for an amazing series and era for Capaldi, with TUaT being a (bitter?)sweet epilogue to end off Capaldi and Moffat.
Long live Moffat!!
- A fanboy
ChanCeNecK I hope more people in later years will come to love Moffat’s era more and appreciate all he did for the show. He’s written by far the most stories of any writer, and only one was a pretty big miss for me (Doctor, Widow, Wardrobe). I don’t think there are many other writers that understand the Doctor as well as he does, and it allowed for some seriously interesting storytelling.
"Twice upon a Time" is tarnished for me by Moffatt's flawed writing of the 1st Doctor. Other than that huge glaring problem, its a decent story.
Probably the best finale in Who, aand the best speech. I feel like Peter and Michelle were the dream team for Who
I feel like Capaldi could work next to a skunk and people would love it.
The skunk. Not him acting next to one. We'd all love to see that too. :D
And the doctor will never know missy died on his side
ive never thought of it like that before. thats so sad.
I'm sure I will cry watching your next reaction 😣 Peter is my favourite of all time
especially when the last "stroll" happens

OMG loved your reaction at the end!
It’s worse when you realize, Bill spent more time with the master than she did with the doctor :(
omg thats so sad :(
Why would you say something like that :(
:(
That cuts deep
Thank you for sharing your reactions with us
My god! The Doctor's speech still just hits me in my feelings.
And your face at 12:22 was perfect when you realized who was talking
Mondasian Cybermen will always be one of the best villain designs in Doctor Who.
Can't say I loved this season storyline or companions, but hot damn I'll miss Capaldi forever T_T
on a side note Gomez has aged like fine wine
About David Bradley being in it: there was an interview with Steven Moffat where he says exactly how he got the idea. He was struggling with ideas for a Christmas special as he had planned for the series finale to have Peter Capaldi's regeneration. Then at some convention there was a fan question about bringing back previous Doctors. He said he would like to see the personality clash with the first Doctor, but joked that "William Hartnell doesn't return our calls" (he died in 1975), at which point Peter Capaldi suggested David Bradley. At that point Steven Moffat realised exactly what to do for a Christmas special.
"Watch Doctor Who they said. It will be fun, they said." 😂
Dr who can change everyone’s mood in a split sec
The Doctor: I don’t want to go.
Shayla: I don’t want to watch.
What a series’s finale 🔥🔥🔥🔥
*creates large stack of tissues for Thursday*
We don't want him to go... *sobs*
Say goodbye to the last season of Dr Who you will ever enjoy.
That was the same reaction that we all had, they managed to keep it a really good secret, now get ready for the Christmas special
How many times does the doctor say "no" in this episode? 😂
No.
NO.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *decapitates enemy with attack eyebrows and perfect hair*
at Comic Con once Steven Moffat was asked what he would most want to do if he could do anything and that was to do a episode with the first doctor....
David Bradley came back, because he was so amazing in an adventure in space & time. And yes we melted down when he spoke those famous words.
Hi Shayla, the Xmas Special is important for lot`s of reasons in general, but especially for me. :)
I don`t know if you know or realised, as the Dr. was fighting the Cybermen, he was mentioning all the previous occasions he had defeated them by name.
when u saw the mondasian cyberman killing the doctor, u thought it was Bill lol
I did too and I’m sure a lot of people did
It wasn’t bill shooting the doctor.
Not sure if you've already watched it but there's an incredible video called 'decade of doctor who' by john smith which I think you would love. It was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the shows return and it's honestly one of my favourite fan videos.
Also I'm getting the same feelings I got when Sesskasays was nearly caught up on the show. Really going to miss your reactions.
Great reaction! Absolutely love this episode. And the Doctor's "It's Just Kind" speech is probably my favorite Doctor speech. And the reveal of David Bradley as the First Doctor was great as well! Looking forward to the next one!
The Twelve: I'm The Doctor
The First: Maybe you can be A doctor, but I'M THE DOCTOR
Shayla: WHAT????
I can't wait till next reaction
Another wait till you see the next episode... truly one of Capaldis best Doctors speeches, brings me to tears still, bring the rain.
Brings me to anger, considering how Moffat butchered the First Doctor
Ladies and Gentlemen...: Mister Steven Moffat!!!...... 👏👏👏👏👏👏
My favourite Doctor Who era
Best doctors
Best tardis
Best master
Best screwdriver
Best theme tune
Most importantly best writing
He knows how not to keep it simple
Best music even tough that was Murray Gold
"I don't wanna watch the next one"
Pretty much every person who's seen Twice Upon a Time
I’m already prepared to cry in the next reaction from Peter’s amazing performance. Recently I’ve been rewatching the goodbye scene and it gets me so emotional. 12 was my doctor for sure, which is weird considering I watched it since 2005 and he was the first doctor that I fully understood.
Missy being in the companions montage had me in floods.
That montage of companions reminded me of the 4th doctor's regeneration into the 5th.
And now it’s time for my favorite special...
Me too
Such a solidly good finale. It’s so epic. It’s so emotional. I think it’s perfect 👌🏼
The Doctor's speech in this one is is very finest, in my opinion. Maybe of any regeneration. And Capaldi delivers it beautifully.
You didnt show it, but when he died saying "He hoped there'd be stars " I lost it!
Fun fact, since this was Steven Moffat's last series, he joked about making Missy pregnant with the Master's child. And just drop it on the lap of the next show runner.
I love how Missy started and ended with the Cybermen
I don't like all of DW and don't expect others to either, but I really don't get the people who seem to keep watching it in order to hate it, let alone then insisting on spreading their misery all over the place...
And that classic line from "The Five Doctors"... It never gets old. Never gets young either, but that's besides the point. Now where was I?...
You said "Pooie." I love it. I believe someone made a joke to Moffat about he could put the first Doctor into an episode because David Bradley did so well with the part and he eventually made it come true.
When he found out the First Doctor would be back Capaldi immediately said they should get David Bradley.
What makes the Doctor's final stand feel so impactful is that we so rarely ever see him in direct line-of-fire. The Doctor often only beats his enemies by outsmarting them, either by talking them down or turning their plans back on them; the fact he's facing these Cybermen head-on shows you that he's _finally_ out of options, that the only thing he _can_ do is fight until he dies.
actually love your channel, genuinely an amazing person ahahah
It's amazing just how much David Bradley looks like William Hartnell
What a great episode. I've never seen someone not react this same way. Love it
So, basically what happened was Steven Moffat was going to have the Doctor regenerate at the end of The Doctor Falls but then found out that Chris Chibnall wanted to start his run at the beginning of a new season and not with an Xmas special. So Moffat was like “Hell, no. We’ve got to have a Christmas special!” and rewrote the ending of the episode in order to add one last story in before he left. Also, the first Doctor regenerated after a story featuring the first appearance of the cybermen (from Mondas).
Nobody does Utterly Astonished Face quite like our dear Shayla
12:15, the same bewildered face, every fan around the world did, seeing that scene the first time ;)
The first Doctor is well loved by the fans
Now with David Bradley playing "William Hartnell" they had the choise to do the remaining stuff, planed for the first Doctor, before William Hartnell got sick and wasnt able to play the part any longer.
I remember bawling my eyes out hysterically when I first saw it, so, good luck. love your reactions as always Shayla, can't believe we're so close to the end :')
I love this episode, but I can’t wait for the next one. I love 12 so much😁👍
Sadly there is just one episode and 12 will be gone, definitely in my top 3 DWho05 doctors
BottomShit yeah me too, shame really but Shayla always gives a good reaction and it’s a good episode imo, so that’s something to look forward to
yes that is David Bradley. He played William Hartnell in the Adventures in Time and Space movie, only to come back and play the First Doctor for Capaldi's final episode. yes so far, its the last time we see the Master/Missy thus far.
Bill with the Cyberman is like Oswin Owsald with the dalek (The clara in Asylum of the Daleks) but worse and it's just AAAAAAggggh pain
...pain...pain...pain...pain...
