Not just "a companion". He first met up with the second Doctor, and appeared with every Classic Doctor from then on, to one extent or another - particularly #3 and #4. The head of UNIT, he rarely travelled in the Tardis, but became one of the Doctor's closest and best friends. The reason for the call-out to him in this episode is because the actor who played the Brigadier, Nicholas Courtney, died shortly before the episode was made, so they are paying homage to one of the great stalwarts of Doctor Who. For those of us who grew up watching the Brigadier with the Doctor, this was a very touching moment.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was THE companion in Classic Who, the actor, Nicholas Courtney, passed away in early 2011, and they gave him a tribute in this episode. He has a LONG history with Doctor Who, most prominently as a series regular during the 3rd Doctors time. They played off each other so well too. Brigadier following the rules, the Doctor constantly breaking them, he tells the Doctor to not do something so the Doctor does it. They were besties. :)
What I loved most about the character is how unfazed he was about everything. He's been around the Doctor long enough to have seen it all XD

No, the Brigadier didn't create UNIT, but from it's inception he was placed in charge of running the day-to-day operations. He still had to report to higher ups and make requests for things like air strikes. UNIT was under the command of the United Nations, so technically the secretary general would be the one Lethbridge-Stewart answered to.

Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart was a long time friend of the Doctor through many incarnations. He was the original head of the British branch of UNIT in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970's. He worked with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (Briefly in a TV special and a full story on Big Finish), 7th, and 8th (Only in Big Finish) Doctors. During the 3rd Doctor's exile on Earth he worked extensively with the Brigadier and his staff. The Brig has been mentioned briefly in new Who, and he did guest star on the Sarah Jane Adventures once. Around the time this episode was filmed the actor who played The Brig (Nicholas Courtney) died. As a fan of the Brigadier, I thought it was really nice that they decided to address it in the show. RIP Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart. A wonderful fellow! And one of the Doctor's longest term friends.

Regarding Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart (retired), apparently he was to have appeared in season 4 in The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky but the actor who played him (Nicholas Courtney) wasn't available for filming. The Brigadier was briefly mentioned by the 10th Doctor in that episode where it was then explained that he was stuck somewhere in Peru.
Also, as likely already mentioned he appeared in one story of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The actor who played him, Nicholas Courtney passed away around that time. :-(

The older guy in the back is the "old" Canton Delaware. The young one was played by Mark Sheppard, which you know, and the older version was played by his father, William Morgan Sheppard. (Edit, just found out William Morgan Sheppard passed on January 6 of this year, 2019.)
Lethbridge Stewart appeared in classic Who, first appearing in the role in 1968 with the second Doctor, Troughton. Although he played another character with the first Doctor, Hatnell. He became a more permanent fixture when the Doctor was stuck on Earth having had his ability to use the Tardis removed for the third Doctors run. (Pertwee.) This was actually more about saving money than anything since staying on Earth was cheaper to film. He is often called The Brigadier, though originally he was a Colonel.
With Tom Baker taking over as the 4th Doctor they were moving back into more episodes in space, and he only appeared in 2 serials in 1975. (The show was a serial back then, usually 4 half hour episodes with a cliffhanger each episode)
He came back for a serial in 1983, as well as the special The Five Doctors that included 3 living doctors, somebody playing the first since he had passed, and unused footage of Baker since he didn't come back having just left the series. He appeared once again in 89 with the seventh Doctor, McCoy.
After the original series was canceled there was a special made for charity in 1993, Dimensions in Time. This featured The Brigadier, and Doctors 3 though 7. Since he has been in a couple other specials, and voices his Character in a Doctor Who video game in 97. (It looks like it uses the same engine as the game Doom.)
Most recently he appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures as Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. (2008) Did a fake interview as the character in 2009, and interestingly a video in 2013 also within the Doctor universe, but without the Doctor in it. I believe they would have brought him back also, but the actor passed February 2011. (Which is why the 2013 video is so interesting.)
I have a feeling you would like Sarah Jane Adventures. Unfortunately Elisabeth Sladen also passed in 2011. Just 2 months after him, both from cancer. (Sorry to end this on a sad note.)

Not everyone's favourite this but I like it. The scene where we discover the Brigadier had died was a lovely moment for classic Who fans, seemed fitting that it both took the wind from 11's sails but also made him face up to reality (the Brig was a very no-nonsense type of guy, 11's denial and empty bravado in the face of time's inevitable passage wouldn't have washed with him). And loads of great lines as well as Amy showing where the iron in River's bones _really_ comes from - Scottish women are fierce ;).

I am not sure if this was answered or not, or if you already know, you asked a question when they went back to the lake. “Who is that guy?” He is Canton Everett Delaware III, the man in who worked for the president that the Doctor worked with in Impossible Astronaut and the episode after that. Nicholas Courtney, who played Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart from the '70s on, died while this season was filming. It was another heartbreaking loss for the fandom, and one that the writers used to magnificent effect here.
The Doctor and the Brigadier weren’t exactly BFFs - they had a couple hard ideological differences, but they had a deep mutual respect. Hearing about the death of a man he thought so well of, brought reality down hard on the Doctor. The Brigadier never would've run, and he'd certainly have had some words to say to the Doctor about all the running he's been doing (snippy, to the point, someone get the burn cream, words).
I liked the Brigadier and hos relationship with the Doctor, and this scene was really poignant. Very well done.

He's been casually mentioned in modern who starting with 10 in one episode where he says "Times like these I wish the Brigs was here."

  • @Agent_1701-D
    @Agent_1701-D 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know others have stated it, but...
Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was occasional companion and an Earth-based military contact during the classic era of Doctor Who, who initially met the Doctor in his second incarnation involving a Yeti, and was subsequently placed in charge of a UN based military governed investigative, defensive, and responsive task force known as UNIT - before what you see in the current series. His mention in the story is partially as a tribute to the original actor, Nicholas Courtney, who passed around that time as well. Courtney did reprise the Brig in two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures a few years before this episode aired, and has had on screen interactions with six Doctors - One through Five and Seven. There was a plan to get him to meet the Tenth, but they fell through, although he was referenced being elsewhere during the Tennant’s Sontaran two part arc. When the Third Doctor was exiled to Earth for most of that incarnation, the Brig hired him on as a scientific consultant - a title that he would never actually resign to this day.
Basically, he represented an option of a military response (mostly armed) when The Doctor needed one, saving The Doctor from several tight spots over the years, but was also a friend that wasn’t afraid to call him out on occasion when it was necessary.
If you want to know more, watch some Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker led Doctor Who.
For the record, I am glad you enjoyed this season. But just wait until you see the next one - you are in for a treat (as well as a little heartache) because it leads up to the 50th Anniversary event.
Just be cognizant of the prophesy mentioned in this episode. Like the blue guy said: it’s all still waiting for him.
That said, it’s on to The Doctor, The Witch, and The Wardrobe!

This episode was just a lot of fun: getting to see a lot of old faces again with time all happening at once, seeing the Doctor and River get married (which totally counts even if it was an alternate timeline), the ending... I love it. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it as well.
Very good observations about River picking up traits from Amy and Rory.
    On to season 7!

I really enjoyed your reaction here. I was waiting for you to see that "River Song didn't get it all from you, sweetie" because I think your analysis of it was on point. River is very much a mix of her parents, and I loved how you described Rory. That's the best description I've heard of him. Also, make sure you take a break at some point (you'll know when) because it's important to just sit with it for a bit.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was a companion of the 3rd Doctor. His name comes up now and then in the series, you don't need to watch the old series just know that the Doctor cared for him.

The moment around 4:00 is such an odd one for me. It’s incredibly powerful if you know who The Brig is, but he’s hardly if ever been brought up in Modern Who up to this point so I have to imagine it was completely out of nowhere for a lot of fans. Such an insular moment to hinge The Doctor’s turnaround on.

Geez, Shayla. I'm scared for you in these later series of Doctor Who. But don't worry, we'll be here for support in your reactions.
This is one of my favourite finales because of the storyline. I love River too and to finally have her and the Doctor get married to save the world is absolutely beautiful. Then to see a few of their adventures in the minisodes is just the icing on the cake.

  • @dayres1777

The writers included that little bit about the Brigadier because the actor (Nicholas Courtney) who played the part had just passed in real life. The Brigadier's first appearance in Who was when Patrick Troughton played the second Doctor, he then became a regular during most of Jon Pertwee's run as Doctor #3, and then reduced to appearances during the early years of Tom Baker. After that, he was almost never seen except for a special or two. His last appearance in the part was in the Sarah Jane Adventures.

Well... From an American Doctor Who fan, since 1976, I loved Matt Smith's run on the show. My Doctor was Tom Baker. We had 3 channels total in 1976, and thankfully one was our local PBS, which broadcasted BBC shows on a one year delay back then. Once they had broadcast that years series, they would fall back and show the first 3 Doctors series, so during the mid-70's I spent my Saturday afternoons watching 3 to 4 hours of Doctor Who as a teenager.
So, my Doctor has always been Tom Baker, but I enjoy watching them all, especially Matt Smith. David Tennant was awesome, but Matt had something truly amazing playing the role. Have fun delving further into the world of the Doctor, and as always, take care... Roonok

So, while it makes me smile when you have trouble ending your video (I don't make many TH-cam videos, but I can relate as far as having trouble ending things goes), you really need to relax when you get to the end of your recording. We're going to love the video simply because we already love watching you! You're a really fun person to watch things with. All you need to do is just say, "see ya next time" or what tends to work whenever you really land it with "see you in the next reaction".
