Not necessarily personal, but my EMT instructor got attacked by a patient during our course. Guy tripping on acid, called EMS on himself, was super compliant, got in the truck, everything was fine. Instructor flipped the light on, and the guy lost it. Started throwing hands, even got a bite in on my instructor. His partner that day was a very short lady, but she was ex State Police. She pulled this guy off my instructor, put him on the ground, and wrapped him in a chokehold until LE got there to put the guy in cuffs.

    $17/hr, that's a crime in itself.

As a Respiratory and licensed medic I can attest to about 20% of EMTs / ParaMeds are in shape enough or have the ability to fight, let alone fight a patient. I can't tell you how many times we had to go hands on with a patient who woke up in the box or in our ER swinging. I always carried hand cuffs or plasticuffs on my belt line. Learn basic fighting skills and holds.
