      you forgot about holding neutral when landing from a long jump causes mario to stop in place, and if jumped is pressed in the moment right after landing he will do a backflip. you also forgot moving mario while hes on fire or lava boosting. and you forgot about flying

    I have been watching your videos after Vinny's speedrun last night, and now I have a hankering to try my hand at Mario 64 speedruns. This video answered a lot of questions I've had for years about movement options (been watching speedruns of this game for years now). Can't wait to see more content from you on this platform!

      Thank you so much! I 100% recommend trying a speedrun. You don't have to learn very much at all, you could literally just learn Mips Clip and BLJs and start doing 16 star runs within an hour. If you decide you like it, you could work on more specific stuff. Check out my other guide at the top of the description for general software and hardware recommendations as well.

    Hi Sean, so I went through and thought of some things you could add:
    *Something about bonks and how to avoid them
    *Shell Riding: Speed Boost on slopes, what you can & cannot ride on (terrains), underwater (never used), etc.
    *Using Fireboost to get around
    *RNG/Luck in WDW & SL
    *Enemies start in same place but RNG controls them
    *Tricks to grabbing stars quickly
    *Sliding: Belly Slide vs. Butt Slide & Forward vs. Back. Butt Slide forward is ideal because you can jump (really far). How to turn at the top of a slope to avoid a backward belly slide. How to start a slide with speed
    *Cycles such as the beginning movement in RR to triple jump wall kick
    *Required stars to fight bowser, grab MIPS, talk to Toad, enter BBH
    *Turning
    *Clipping such as TTM or THI
    Thanks again!

    • @SeanRaider
      @SeanRaider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for putting this together! When I was making the script, it just kept getting longer and longer until I had to cut some stuff. I cut the parts that only had a one or two uses throughout the run, like shell riding and cycles. I think I could include a lot of this in a seperate "Tips & Tricks" video, with other stuff that isn't as closely linked to movement, like opening doors on the left side or talking to toad optimally. I can see myself making that someday.

    Usually when someone makes a guide for SM64 that isn't a top runner or anything it's pretty bad and would cause people to learn bad habits. Surprisingly, this video was very good w/ information I wouldn't have expected to be included to fully explain a movement's capabilities. There were some v minor issues but it's just nitpicking.
    I think a little more information on buffered kicks (holding A before a kick) to get a first frame/dustless kick would be good and a bit more information on holding neutral for quickturns would be good. Quickturns being a faster way to change direction after coming out of a rollout for example. It's like holding neutral but you touch the stick up very gently to lose all your speed and then you can turn quickly.
    Overall though, this was very well made.

    • @SeanRaider
      @SeanRaider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man, that means a lot. Buffered kicks were something I was really considering mentioning, but I was worried about overloading a new player with info. Pressing A and B at the same time generally works fine. Then again I ended up including a lot of other complex stuff so you're probably right. The tiptoe turn is definitely something I should've mentioned.

Aside from my main incentive which is Bayonetta, I bought a few Mario games and decided that SM64 is a perfect way to introduce myself to one of gaming's staples. But most thing you said here sound to me like japanese - back jumps, these ultra high jumps, like in seconds scaling to such heights... Damn. I really want to make a 3D game with movement that feels as good as Mario 64, so I've been looking stuff up and trying stuff out to see what makes it feel good. One thing I noticed was that compared to other games, Mario takes a little bit of time to turn 90 degrees while moving. Normally, if you turn more than 90 degrees, he skids, but I think when moving at low speed, he'll instead try to turn, and there was actually times this killed me and I didn't understand what caused it till later.
    I feel like Mario Galaxy and Mario Odyssey may feel more refined and controlled, but they don't feel as good overall. I theorize that Mario 64 sacrifices some degree of control and safety to give a sense of momentum and speed, so cases where Mario is harder to control (at least for a new player) can make it seem like he has more physical momentum.
    I'd really like to find an explanation of how Mario's movement works in Mario 64, beyond just what's useful tips for speedrunning, but more to see why it feels so much better than other Mario games, while also illustrating its possible flaws or glitches. How does his momentum work, and when can he transfer velocity in different directions? How do different states alter his level of air control? (It seemed to me that the triple jump has the most air control, while the long jump has forward/back control, to the point of being able to do really stumpy looking jumps, while having seemingly little lateral control)

    Why is the controller overlay a gamecube controller instead of an n64 controller?

    I’m just about to get the whole emulator and speedrun software set up and your videos have been invaluable to noobs like myself. Thank you!

    A difficult trick to do with slide kicking, if you chain lots of frame perfect slide kicks you can reach up to 90 Horizontal speed. Also, this is more noticeable if you slide down the slope in CCM and grab the pole. Instead of jumping off of it, if you press Z the frame you touch the ground and then B a few frames later, you’re essentially doing a slide kick at 100 HSPD.

    Amazing video! I just started running. Luckily my cousin gave me his everdrive and I have a couple working n64’s laying around. Nonetheless, this was very helpful!

      Awesome! Make sure you put Usamune on the everdrive for practice, I have details in my other tutorial vid. What category are you running?

      Sean Raider Already have Usamune on my everdrive and had a lot of fun playing around with it today and being able to practice strats a lot more consistently. I’m currently running 16 star until I can get to a time I’m satisfied with and get better at my movement. Also, I’m very lucky that my dad loved Hori controllers when he used to play 20ish years ago, so I have a couple that are almost new. I love how helpful and welcoming this community is as I’m recovering from addiction. I joined your discord just now and hopefully I’ll fit in with your community :)

    The real difference between casual and professional speedrunners: its the movement.

    Heyhey^^
    I bought a Gamecube controller the other day and connected it to my OLED Switch using a USB adapter. It works fine, however I can't use the L button on the controller (top left) on the Mario 64 version (from the Switch Online subscription)...why doesn't the L button work there? How else can I duck/perform certain moves with Mario in the game?
    The button works everywhere else, including Smash Bros Ultimate. It's just in Mario 64 that the L button doesn't work, as I said.
    Thanks for any help!

    7:17 Same time doesn't work, you will get an aerial kick that looks like a grounded kick but has the properties of an aerial kick (20% speed loss, and you can't do it with 35+ speed (becoming 28+) no matter your joystick angle. They do have the same height and action though
