Here in the Desert Southwest I've learned over the years where the afternoon temps consistantly hover around 100 degrees for three months it helps a lot to feed a good amount of Miracle Grow because it creates more foliage to help shade itself and give them an occasional "drink of luke warm milk" to provide a calcium boost which helps lesson off flower drop off.
Thanks for that tip! In Florida we don't reach the hundreds knock on wood but we are always in 95 to 98 Grange.

My backyard garden looks like a homeless camp these days with shade cloth strung around. But it really has helped to keep tomatoes producing. It's over 95 here everyday for the last 3 weeks, and no rain. My water bill is going to be... yikes 😬

I have found from a neighbor who gardened for 40 yrs.
He suggest all your plants in ground to water an puddle watering 3 times.
Meaning water first time a section whatever vegetable enough to make it puddle an move on, come back do it again, do to all plants do it 1 last time.
It works, I am in zone 7 Northeast of you.
Blossom end rot still use shelve milk, 2 quarts milk to 2 quarts water. Stops blossom end rot. Shelf milk is cheap.
Here in 8b zone in Jackson, Mississippi we get 95 degree days and heat index up to 110 or more for many hours each day for up to three months or so. I find it helps to water a half inch or so early morning and a light cool down shower about 4 pm when shade begins to cover portions of my garden. Watering after the shade sets in really helps the plants recover from the heat of the day. Believe me...twice a day watering is NOT too much when plants are exposed to endless high heat.
Mulching helps a bit too. Shade for mid-afternoon on is essential too, either natural or shade cloth. In the end, too much heat still causes a lot of problems and eventually the tomatoes will burn out and die no matter what you do. Hopefully, you will have gotten a decent harvest by that time.
The BEST practice however isn't about watering or shade. It's about planting as early in the season as you possibly can to beat the summer heat with your first harvest. Short maturity varieties are essential. I start from seed in January and plants are ready to transplant in March. This year the last freeze we had was March 7. A 60 day maturity would let the first tomatoes start coming in early in May and we didn't get our first 90 degree day until after that time. Plus we had enough rain during that window to not need to water.
Timing of planting is therefore the most critical part of growing tomatoes when you are in a hot climate. You cannot defeat Mother Nature's excessive heat once it sets in for weeks on end. Far better to get your crop in early, even if you have to protect it from cold, and harvest early.

I had to water the hydroponic tomatoes 1-2 gallons each per day to maintain water levels with the heat we have been having. Some grew up to a foot in 1 day. Its crazy.
Right on time Gary. We are expected to have temps above 95F for the next 3 weeks here in GA Zone 8A. All of my tomatoes are in Containers so I plan on moving them under trees to shade them. I have been watering morning and late evening. I will see how it goes. Thanks as always.

You didn’t give your opinion about what time of day to water and I just wondered what camp you are in on that issue. Lots of TH-camrs say only morning but I have to say I disagree. Been gardening 30+ years here in Kansas City zone 6a and our weather here is violent and brutal. We’ve been under a heat wave for over a week now with heat index over 100• every day and my tomatoes (knocking on wood) are beautiful and not showing any signs of stress. Two words: soaker hoses. Every night as soon as the sun starts going down at least 2 hours. Because when you are overheated the time you need water and relief is now not the next morning. Yes the ground is hot but the water continuously dripping is going to rapidly cool off the entire area. That’s my unsolicited and completely biased opinion! Your garden is so lovely, I always enjoy your videos!
Soakers hoses are probably the best way to manage slow and steady. I water all time actually.

I think the best thing to do is put in a drip system. I did it in one part of the yard on a timer and it works great and it can be relatively inexpensive. Once you get the timers they are good for a long time and then it’s just drip hose which isn’t costly. This way you don’t have to stand there holding the hose. You got a big garden it will get old soon as you age a little more. I bring the stuff in before frost so it lasts. It’s only a couple of timers and a few hoses. Are you watering every day with drip?
Michael P in one area the system waters everyday for 15 min in early am and that’s it. Might need more since it’s been so hot. I buried hose under mulch so pretty much covers the hose.

I’m in VA zone 7a and seeing stress now in upper 80s to low 90s with the humidity. Rain in the last t week and a half better than 5”.
Romas are reddish/orange and fall off of bumped or a wind hits.
I covered today with white row cover we use in early spring that is supposed to be 40%. 10 day forecast shows much the same is why I covered.
Luckily mine are in containers. Was able to move them from 7hrs of pounding sunshine to 5hrs morning sunshine to afternoon shade.

We call it summer here in Alabama. Late afternoon shade is a good thing which is why we plant them where we do. Regular deep watering ... not letting them dry out is what I finally figured out, and a good layer of mulch.
We have never used shade cloth.🤔👍

Thanks for the info. I live in 9b so all I have left is my peppers( perennials here) and sweet potato’s. But in April and May when I still have tomatoes and other typical summer fruit and veg it is hard for me to remember to water! I have to water almost every day from April- oct.
And here in cass county ND we are getting too much water, lots of the farmers fields around our farm turned into lakes again. We got our garden in late due to the flooding, and will get a small harvest, but not what we would've got. We are planning on putting in geothermal greenhouse for our area, we are right on border of zone 3/4, and i think the weather is only going to get worse w grand solar minimum. Zone 7 Long Island Never a good time for a heat wave,but for some reason,everything is late this year. Plants loaded with green tomatoes and tons of flowers,but the ripening is taking forever. Just started picking squash and zucchini last week & waiting on peppers,eggplant,cucamelons,yard long beans,etc. So many flowers dropped in the heat....sigh. Fingers crossed that plants were healthy enough to bounce back. TY for the timely video.

your garden looks great gary! keep in mind a high heat index will reduce transpiration and respiration so over watering can occur very easily. thats why a lot of times you get BER shortly after a thunderstorm during a heat wave.

I was surprised you put garden mesh right on the plants. I had always thought it shouldn't touch, but perhaps that's only in the freezing conditions when I normally use it. It certainly would simplify things for me. We're in a heat wave and I have tomatoes on my roof. Trying to rig a little canopy with the wind up there today was a time-consuming failure. Wish I'd just thrown on the garden mesh. I have tons of it. I guess dark cloth touching directly could make things hotter.
It damage the plants but if you don't have a lot of time or space to hang, touching is better than not using it

Consider NW Arizona and growing tomatoes: we have 2-3 MONTHS of Triple-digit temps, and tomatoes hate it, but tomato worms LOVE IT!

I am in zone 6 b in Washington state. We don't get a lot of rain during the summer months; so, I have to water my garden which is growing in fabric containers. We have only had a couple days so far this summer where the high temps were in the 90s. Still, I am watering nearly every day or every other day depending on the temperature. I also use a moisture meter to check the moisture level. Thanks to this video, I have learned another way to tell how much I am watering. Thank you.
In my city in Ontario Canada the forecast for tomorrow is going to 44 celsius- 111 fahrenheit . I have been using a thicker sheer curtain doubled over on my plants for the last week here because of the extreme heat. I put it on at 1 pm. as the south sun beats down. Take it off at about 6pm. My tomato plants are doing very well so far.

Wow. Looks like all have leaf curl. Mine started to react. I'm in Bpt CT 6b. I put my pots in the driveway on pallets,my raised bed will be fine. Coincidentally we are getting about 5-6 inches of rain today. The pallets will keep the extreme heat away from the pots but I will screw 2x4x8 to them to help put up shade cloth.

Great advice as we'll be getting high heat these next few days too. You can also take a tuna can and fill that and see how long it takes to fill that as that will hold an inch of water as well.

Wow amazing veggie garden U have! And what an educational video! I have just started growing tomatoes and have 2 plants which are giving so many tomatoes that I am surprised. It is my first time growing tomatoes and wanted to shade them as in Australia the heat is burning the leaves even though I water it twice a day! Loved ur video for the tip, thank you from Sydney!

Hey Gary, we are getting hit with the heat. I lost 1 tomato plant so far. Yours are looking great.
4 - 5 WEEKS of +90 heat??? Oh how I wish! We normally have 4 - 5 MONTHS of it...AND high humidity!
I did learn something this year, though...PRUNE to allow for air flow and use drip tape! I say this while knocking on wood, but today is July 20th and, SO FAR, I haven't had a single sign of my nemesis, early blight. Normally by this time, my tomato rows look like a mass of some sort of splotchy yellow alien plant life from a distance.

Totally enjoyed this video thank you so much for sharing your wise knowledge I am in Florida I don't really know my zone But Central Florida gets at least three months of high heat every year maybe even six months of heat and I am experiencing some major Flower rot drop anyway I just wanted to say thank you now I just have to invest in the shade cloth put it up

The temperatures are now in the low 90’s and my garden is on the north side of our house. Would it be a good idea to remove the shade cloth? I’m still hoping my tomatoes and peppers will set fruit before the first frost in November. Thanks for the great videos! I’m learning something new every time I watch.
Gary, I live in EL PASO TX. been HOT HOT HOT. Haven't gotten much in the form of ANY harvests. Ive shaded, watered and fertilized everything monthly and every 2 weeks or so I put Ebson and fish emulsion. I also top dress with my own compost AND mulch. WHAT more can I do?
Can you plant around the heat? Sometimes the tomatoes are more fall plants in high heat zones like yours.

My Coleus are the " canary in the coal mine" for me with regards to watering. They begin to curl up when I'm a slow with the water. When using the water-wand I generally count to 20, maybe 25 if it's going to be 100F+.. just to be sure..

Hi Gary. I grow potted tomatoes along the outside wall of my garage and for the month of July the temperature was 38-40. Lost a lot of flowers due to the heat. Next season I will use shade cloth. My question is, would white shade cloth be better because black draws in heat and white reflects. I’m thinking somewhere between 40-55% shade cloth.

Firstly, big thanks for the great videos you upload. I have been learning loads with your videos.
I'm completely beginner to gardening and I got only a tiny balcony to play with my plants. I'm currently growing tomatoes and cucumber which is fine for now.
I actually would like to see a video with tips on how to speed up compost while maintaining a reach soil. I only got about 15 gallons container for compost which fills up pretty quick and I run out of space for compost.
I appreciate if that would be topic of your interest.

Very glad to share. So for your balcony I might try a small tumbler composter. Spinning it each days helps speed up the process. Look up compost videos on my channel, youll see a tumbler video. That one is too big for balcony but will give you all the details

I had checked on your past videos for composting tips. I missed out on this Compost Tumbler video, it indeed helps a lot. I spotted few things I can improve on my method.
I also came across your website a couple of times. I'm currently based in Ireland and we got a series of regulations in place. Custom blocks imports of some good stuff I would love to have and prevents delivery. A bit annoying, but we can't do much about it.

I am growing tomatoes in self wicking buckets and each one is drinking about three gallons of water a day! Thirsty boogers. Oklahoma is looking at 100 degree days for the next week. Next stop Amazon shade cloth. Thanks!

I have a soaker hose under my tomato plants and beans. I water daily.
Every time anyone calls a tomato a fruit it brings me back to my 4th Grade Elementary School Science Bee. The question asked was: Is the tomato a fruit or a vegetable? I though it was my question and answered, "It's a fruit". But, it was the opposing team's question and DAVID MORRIS answered the question with my answer. He didn't know the answer. I could read it on his face. His team went on to win the Science Bee. I'll never get over that injustice! On a side note, I saw him about 10 years after and he was just a short fat man. So, I guess there is karma.....and justice. :) Thanks for the videos. :)

I was looking for a good cover of straw under or around the tomatoes. Why not? Helps to keep water from evaporating.

Wow - You seem to get an amazing amount of tomatoes on your plants. I am harvesting about 10 cherry/pear tomatoes a day, my paste tomatoes are not yet ripe and I've been able to pull off 1 Cherokee purple (just today). I have lost about 1 paste tomato to stink bugs each day, I harvested the Cherokee purple a day or two early because of those stupid things.
Virginia Horvath you have to fertilize with Texas tomato food as soon as the plants start flowering. They then set the fruit and ripen. When hot flowers will not bloom or not pollinate. You see all the green tomatoes but that was from a month or more ago.

I see the garden hose in the video. Are we to assume you are hand watering everything this year ? Plan for a automated watering system at some point in future ?
New subscriber from TX. It's early May, and we're already experiencing 100 deg. temps. I have my shade (50%) up on my 3 container tomato plants, and so far so good. No blossoms have dropped. We're expecting a whole week of hot temps. Is it okay to leave my shade up 24/7 over my tomatoes. Not new to gardening, but moved from a short growing season ( Montana), to a very long growing season here in TX. Thank you so much! Love your channel, and love CaKim.
Native Texan here. Heat and drought is a problem here, especially with everyone coming here and no rain. Water supplies are not stretching as far. Our summers are very hot and for a long time. It won't cool down till Oct-Nov. It goes in cycles. This lucky year we are going on 17 days of over 100. I'm sitting at 105 just south of Ft. Worth. If you're in South TX, add humidity to it. It's a rough season. I hope you're managing.
So jealous of the amount of fruit you have already! I'm in zone 4(b) and I won't get any tomatoes until late mid/late August... and even then, they won't be ripe. :/
Start them indoor earlier and then transplant them outside when your zone allows. That's how you will get a better growing season! In in CT and that's what I do

This year we planted our cherry tomatoes in 12 inch and 14 inch clay pots. They did pretty well until the temps got near 90 degrees. We live in southeast Virginia. I have to wonder if the soil in the pots is getting too hot. We water every day and have a small tray under the pot to hold about 2 inches of water
So you probably need larger pots. As the plants get large they suck the water and life out of the soil. 5 gallons works but I really recommend 7-10 gallon pots. It make life easier.

My little garden went bust this year. Plants didnt grow very few flowers. I grow in containers and usually have good harvests. Oh, btw Gary what is that orange flower shown under the shade cloth?
Hi Gary ... and perhaps the viewing community at large ... you mentioned having trimmed your shade cloth and I'm curious, can any shade cloth be trimmed with ordinary scissors? I googled the idea and was directed to an Australian site that sells high end shade cloth and a special cutter for trimming. I was hoping to purchase AgFabric shade cloth via Amazon and trim it to fit some of my uniquely small little sections in need of shade. THANKS for posting all of your knowledge and passion!!!
