Best tip was about the pruning practices for both versions: indeterminate vs. determinate and fertilizing once a week for container tomatoes. Great collab video! Like my gardening fairy godparents! haha!

The planting tomatoes in waves is the best idea. I know here in Oklahoma zone 6b blossom drop and diseases can wipe out your production because of the heat and humidity. I am taking notes so I can plan for a more successful garden. Thanks for your tips Gary and Calikim! ❤
Good luck. I found it waves too, the diseases seem to pick plants at different grow phases. Not sure why but the younger plants seem to fight off things better. Please check out my seed shop at www.TheRustedGarden.com You can find seeds, seed starting supplies, neem oil, peppermint oils and more.

I have been growing @ 7:05 Golden Jubilee's for 5 years and invariably there are many with internal black areas...not blossom end rot but inside, it doesn't smell off like rotting and doesn't appear to affect the rest of the tomato in any way. It is only the Golden Jubilee's no other varieties in my garden have this problem.
Hmmm. I havent noticed it but will look for it now. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
This was great seeing the two of you together! One thing I do with indeterminate tomatoes now is use an 8 foot piece of strapping for a stake. Plant will grow all the way up the stake if you pay attention to it and keep tying it off and keep the suckers under control.

I have such a small area to work with. So, I am having the most fun with the Micro Tom determinant tomatoes in pots. Each gallon pot has 4-6 plants I’ve grown from seeds. I’ve read that it is the “worlds smallest tomato plant” and it has blossomed tons of little flowers which have become tomatoes. Although, I don’t believe it’s the worlds smallest actual tomato, it has been fruiting small tomatoes. They’re fun and a great plant for kids. However the seeds were extremely tiny. The good part of it is they seem to do very well in partial sun or low sun environments. I actually have them on a patio and I only get a small amount of sunlight in the morning. Thanks for all of your insight and videos.
I grew those. They are great. Very glad to share Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!

I think the grass between rows is a good idea. Space them so you can just run the lawn mower down the row with a rear bag grass catcher. Less weeding and back pain, just maintain weeds in planting rows👍

Great video and lots of information!! Really liked the tip about planting determinate tomatoes throughout the summer. Makes sense, just hadn't thought of it.

I tried a Determinate tomato called Mountain Fresh bred for cold Carolina spring weather, its doing very well and loaded down to the point of bending those cheezy cages sold at big box stores. I also made a hedge of tomatoes (12 plants) and those are also loaded down with tomatoes, I used concrete wire attached to steel posts and spent several hours tying the vines to the fence. Overall, my bean harvest has been krazy, squash are coming in, cucumbers are producing more than we can eat, pumpkin and watermelon are just getting going after a late start.
Thanks so much. I havent heard of that one. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!

I have 2 questions; 1. At roughly 15:31 (background) is that an insect "hotel"? 2. If I cover the tomatoes in my raised bed when it's raining a lot, would the fruit still split? My favorites are yellow tomatoes but I like them all (gimme a slice of rye bread with caraway seeds, lots of butter, healthy dose of any onion and top it with real mayonnaise and I can live on that for ever :-) ) Thank you for the video (both of you). You are a wealth of information and always the best.
Thats my insect and from hotel. Yes water comes in from the roots too fast and that is what splits tomatoes. Good luck Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you. By the way, I would love to order many things from your store but the costs would be astronomical (S&H+ duty+ taxes+currency exchange...) I am grateful that at least I can watch and learn from your videos :-)
Gary, Quick question. When did you start your seeds for you late planting of tomatoes? Love all your videos and have and continue to learn a lot. Thank you for your time and God Bless.
We have a different definition of 'cat facing' and 'split' here in the South. The varieties prone to top splitting are 'cat faced'. Splitting is when the sides split due to excess water take-up by the plant. I had some Cherokee Purple tomatoes that popped and 'split' when touched. Some tomato varieties will never look perfect. They also happen to be some of the most flavorful. Meanwhile we still search for the perfect variety. My own idea of perfection is variety.

Hi Gary, this is some Gardening you have already. The tomatoes i have are 4 different ones. I have a tiny called Sweet Pea no larger then half an inch, indeed very sweer, but seems to have more troubles with temperatures. Now this week the weather its going to be crazy in Holland, especially in the south were i live, W.forecast say we get burning heat of 100+ F on thursday. Thats very unusual for us, way to hot. It has been dry for to long ( again last year too , 2 months drought ) So i have to cover the tomatoes somehow, gotta make a tent over them.
Weather has been crazy everywhere. Good look with covering that is high heat. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!

Great video guys just loved it- I have never been able to grow tomatoes but something must have changed in Australia as I have the greatest harvest & am flat out keeping up with them- mine are called Grosse Lisse & are huge. I have also been successful this winter (sub-tropical winter in Brisbane ) a massive cherry tomato bush so I should have entered the challenge after all. Cheers Denise - Australia

Great video by you and Kim. A couple of questions. Do you prefer cages or a single stake for your tomatoes? What are those metal containers for your plants? Also, I have something eating the leaves of my zucchini which I just sprayed with neem oil. In one application, they are looking great although I saw some very small flies checking it the next day. I'm planning on doing another application in a week. My wife adores/loves the Campari tomatoes that we get at BJ's but cannot be found in any nursery or even in seed catalogs. I checked out TH-cam and found a video on how a guy took one of his wife's Comparis and cut a slice through the middle (with seeds), put it in a 4" peat pot with some potting soil, added 1/2" of potting soil, and bingo, in 2 weeks they sprouted and later transplanted them for a nice harvest. I tried it and have just separated them and put the 3" plants into 5 grow bags, It is June 26 on Cape Cod and I'm hoping that I'll be able to harvest them in mid/late Sept.
Thanks for all your tips my garden is doing especially well this year I'm so excited and I use your advice on using the fish Emulsion and is really made a difference one of the tomatoes that I have planted that I really like is the big boys

Hi Gary.....how often do you recommend using Daconil? So far, my tomatoes are doing well, but I think I have some fungus, especially on the bottom of the plants. I’ve been trying to keep the branches cut off, but .its soooo hot here in NE Oklahoma! And we haven’t had much rain. My tomatoes are very tall, at least 8 to 9 feet....my favorites are the Cherokee Purple and Juliet’s. This is a very good video. You guys are very informative! Thank you so much! You guys have a great day! 🙃❣️

How do you save tomatoes from bird? It seems like I can't let my tomatoes ripen on the vine without birds eating or at least poking them. It's so frustrating. Please give us some advice on how to deal with birds eating tomatoes.
Hey Gary what organic spray do you recommend to spray after a hard rain for disease? Im in Alabama its very hot and humid and we have heavy down pours and severe thunderstorms

I have watched many of your videos on the type of soils to put in my raised planter box and am more confused. I have a 3 x 6 ft box on legs with 12” depth which is on my patio. It’s made out of cedar. I was planning to lay fabric on bottom and then start putting in the soil. This is the confusion. I plan to plant herbs and small veggies. What mix should I use? The garden soil in the bags states to not use in containers but only inground planting. Please advise.
Garden soil is less peat moss than a potting mix. That is it. You can use garden soil. I have. What is most cost effective way if you buy products is to buy garden soil bags and a bale of peat moss. Fill your beds with garden soil and peat moss. A 3:1 ratio works 3 gs: 1 pm. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I see someone likes archery :) Is there some major difference between the care of tomato plants and pepper plants that I'm missing? They get the same soil, fertilizer, neem treatments etc but this is the second year in a row that my tomatoes are doing great and my peppers are struggling.
Archery is fun. So peppers can get less fertilizer and like less nitrogen. But just about every plant can get the same basic treatment for instance if you just compost garden. Slow and low. How do you keep birds from devouring your tomatoes after they start to ripen? I’m using a garden net right now but it’s a royal pain. I’ve tried fake owls and snakes in the past and they are only a temporary solution.
Last year I had major damage to 🍅 from birds. I added 4 bird baths and knock on wood have not had one issue. I have had over 40lbs of tomatoes this year

Ok I understand the tomatoes cracking isn't a bad thing but I have just question why are there ants coming out of the crack of my tomatoes( does this normally happen?) if anybody has an answer I would appreciate it
@@tessasilberbauer6219 yea I've never had a problem with him at the Garden at my mom's house but my other Garden is definitely having a problem with ants getting into the fruit
Many times when things get dry the bugs find a peck, split, or whatever and it's a great place for water. I have even seen butterflies, racoons, field nice, even turtles will nip a blushing tomato if they can reach it. They find cooling shade and a drink all in one place.
So a bad crack, ants get in. They like the sugar of the cherry types. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!

Very glad to share

I think the grass between rows is a good idea. Space them so you can just run the lawn mower down the row with a rear bag grass catcher. Less weeding and back pain, just maintain weeds in planting rows👍

I have 2 questions;
1. At roughly 15:31 (background) is that an insect "hotel"?
2. If I cover the tomatoes in my raised bed when it's raining a lot, would the fruit still split?
My favorites are yellow tomatoes but I like them all (gimme a slice of rye bread with caraway seeds, lots of butter, healthy dose of any onion and top it with real mayonnaise and I can live on that for ever :-) )
Thank you for the video (both of you). You are a wealth of information and always the best.
Thats my insect and from hotel. Yes water comes in from the roots too fast and that is what splits tomatoes. Good luck

I have a tiny called Sweet Pea no larger then half an inch, indeed very sweer,
but seems to have more troubles with temperatures. Now this week the weather its going to be crazy in Holland, especially in the south were i live, W.forecast say
we get burning heat of 100+ F on thursday. Thats very unusual for us, way to hot.
It has been dry for to long ( again last year too , 2 months drought ) So i have to cover the tomatoes somehow, gotta make a tent over them.

I’ve been trying to keep the branches cut off, but .its soooo hot here in NE Oklahoma! And we haven’t had much rain.

Is there some major difference between the care of tomato plants and pepper plants that I'm missing? They get the same soil, fertilizer, neem treatments etc but this is the second year in a row that my tomatoes are doing great and my peppers are struggling.
Archery is fun. So peppers can get less fertilizer and like less nitrogen. But just about every plant can get the same basic treatment for instance if you just compost garden. Slow and low.

Ok I understand the tomatoes cracking isn't a bad thing but I have just question why are there ants coming out of the crack of my tomatoes( does this normally happen?) if anybody has an answer I would appreciate it
Attracted to the easy-access food?
@@tessasilberbauer6219 yea I've never had a problem with him at the Garden at my mom's house but my other Garden is definitely having a problem with ants getting into the fruit
Many times when things get dry the bugs find a peck, split, or whatever and it's a great place for water. I have even seen butterflies, racoons, field nice, even turtles will nip a blushing tomato if they can reach it. They find cooling shade and a drink all in one place.
So a bad crack, ants get in. They like the sugar of the cherry types.

Any tips to keep rodents off your tomato plants? I keep getting my tomato being eaten and I’m assuming it might be rats.
Sorry no tips.

No way you can eat everything that you grow in one season. Fruit trees vegetables leafy greens it's crazy. What do you do with all of it.
True. I have lots of people that come by. If not for Covid, I would be having a harvest, help and happy hour 1x a month this year.
