      Hey Gary I really enjoyed your show on how to use hydrogen peroxide for your tomato plants I am recently growing cherry tomato And I Sprayed Soap and water on it because I wanted to get rid of the bugs and it ended up turning out really bad is there a way I can read or ventilate them back to health because I sprayed water on them and they're still yellow and some brown spots if I use that kind of solution that you described hydrogen peroxide will it help my tomato plants cause I'm a beginner and I'm learning new things??

    Thank you for all of tour detailed videos. I have 15 tomato plants one tomato is growing. 6 cucumber plants and about 4 cucumbers growing. Green fungi on soil and white mold. I just used a 1:1 ratio about thirty minutes ago. Bugs in my carrot container went running and the soil fizzed. 🤞🏾crossed I didn’t hurt them. GA zone 7b….extremely hot

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      You might get some burn with 1:1. But a 1:2 ratio is probably as effective on the soil and a bit safer. There is a wide range of effectiveness, so just test it out. Good luck.

    You have a lot of great videos, Gary, but this might be your best to date. Excellent experiment. Many of my tomatoes are too far gone at this point given I'm a lot further south, but I'm going to give it a shot since I'm not worried about some peroxide damage. They're already pretty in decline, and I'm moving in 8 weeks, anyway. Keep up the good work.

      I enjoyed this one. A bit of work and editing but I really wanted to show how 1) test spray 2) how to work up sprays 3) what to look for and of course show results. I had to try something with the rain and hit the determinates that where dying anyway with the solution first. No extra leaf damage so I proceeded to make the video.

    Gary. thanks for this experiment. I had blight on some Patio variety Tomato plants. I mixed 12 tbs to a gallon of water and sprayed them. It killed the blight and it did leave holes in the leaves where the blight spots were. But the holes are minimal. I know the holes were where the blight was, because I marked some of them. This works great.

      I live in the Deep South of Alabama. We have extreme heat and humidity all the time during the growing season. Tomato blight is a serious problem here. All tomato plants in and around my area have died and are all dried up. For 99.9 % of gardeners, the season is over, only a handful of us grow through the summer and fall.I planted mine late this year, around June 4th, well way late I must admit. I did not have a blight problem till this past week and then it was only on my Patio variety of tomatoes. My Celebrity, Cherokee Purple and Goliath are just beautiful. I usually use Daconil, but its a preventative not a true fungicide. I remembered your tests and said well, if I don't do it they die, so if it kills them, I have nothing to lose. I mixed it up, and sprayed them in the late afternoon after the sun had moved into the treeline. That was Thursday, on Friday morning I checked them and sure enough the blighted areas that had been yellow were turning brown. The areas with the black spots I had marked had the holes in the leaves like yours did. All I could say was WOW!. It killed the blight and the remainder of the leaves look fine. Today Saturday, they are looking great and the new top growth is looking an vibrant green. This will definitely change how I plant for the fall now. Already have more tomato starts popping up in pots to go into my fall garden. Thanks again Gary. God Bless You.
      Mr. Tom

    I am new to gardening but I watched your video and was curious as I keep food grade peroxide on hand. I read online that you can soak your seeds for 30 min and it breaks through the shell and at the same time kills any fungus or nasties on the seed itself so your chance of germination will be better. I got all but 1 come up and I have never sprouted a single seed in my life. They are robust! I also got some plants from the nursery who were really rough. I sprayed them and treated the soil. The soil started bubbling and sizzling! I left some in, still in the nursery pots. next day soil looked new. the rest I just took out, rinsed the roots off and sprayed the roots directly, let sit for about a min and rinsed and planted. They look fantastic! They LOVE it. No shock. nothing. they are growing and strong. both the ones I rinsed and transplanted right away and the ones I waited. I used 8 Tablespoons per gallon.

    I'm so happy I found your site. There are lots of great ones out there for sure and way too many "Martha Stewart" types if you know what I mean.
    A bit of background on me. I have a degree in Forestry and have been working in the landscape,tree,shrub, ornamental field my whole life. I've been working at garden center up here in CT 6b on and off for 33 years. I started up there again full time 2 years ago. Boy things have changed in this field! I remember selling only 2 types of hydrangea. Now we carry 30 varieties. 200 varieties of roses. Anyway. My strength is tomatoes and veggies so I run that dept. I've been trying to expand my knowledge but that's not easy to do even though I work at a place where our primary goal is to educate our customers. So what to do? I go on TH-cam every night and look for the answers I couldn't give my customers. For example I 20 varieties of Rosemary. Which one is the best? Which Lavender. I have 20 varieties as well. Today a head farmer for a non profit came to me with pictures of early blight and leaf spot. Thanks to you I had a handle on how she can treat it. We don't always have the time....we can't know or do it all. It takes a village to raise a garden.
    It's what June15? I still haven't gotten all my tomatoes in. Here in CT it doesn't pay to plant before June 1. Too wet too cold,at night. Thanks for your work. You're an asset to us farmers.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I don't get any diseases and zero blossom end rot. Never. My customers do. I tell them how to plant and how to water and prune. Because I never have problems I'm out of touch with how to treat them. But now I'm planting several heirlooms and I know I will have trouble. Watering is the number one issue for us. I water 2 times a year! But my raised bed 3 feet deep and holds the water and the heat. The pots will be a problem. This is where the H2O2 will come in.

    I saw a video some time back where all the leaves on the tomatoes growing in a greenhouse were very damaged from fungus. The plants were absolutely huge. The owner took off almost all the leaves of each plant. He showed pictures of the skeletons that were left. It did not affect the plants growth or production at all. So I would at least try that, because most of the time new leaves will come out down the stem as well as the top. At least there is no spreading of the disease.

      So it is still a hypothesis but I am looking at the video where it had leaf spot and matching it to the holes. It looks right. My guess is the h202 will also react with fungi that hasn't established (now yellow leaf rings) but might be on the leaf as spores or some other stage. And...I have never had holes like that in leaves. I assume if the h202 was that strong and doing it on it's own.... Id see that damage on many many more leaves. But if I ever get sun again, ill investigate more.

    Tomatoes are such high maintenance plants! If it weren't for my preference for this fruit, I'd never plant it.
    I've been following ur instructions and my last harvest was quite impressive.
    I've decided to keep on planting them following ur routine.
    Are the cherry tomatoes just as vulnerable to fungus?
    I don't have a lot of choices in selection of a resistant plant: it's either the indeterminate salad tomatoes or the plumy tomatoes. Recently I saw the cherry tomatoes at a prestigious supermarket. I've successfully germinated them so far.

    Great Video, I just planted potatoes in a container 1 week ago and because of the rain we are having I have had to leave the containers in the Garage. Now I see white(looks like snow) fungus? growing on top of the soil. Will this say 10-1 mixture help get rid of the fungus?

  • @Knaeben

    I used the 6 tablespoons of 3% H2O2 on my plants. It seems to be helping a bit on all of them except the eggplant. For some reason the eggplant alone was very intolerant to it, and the two leaves I tested on turned yellow and might be dead. Each plant seems to respond differently.

    Appreciate all your testing. Very helpful. I planted about 33 tomato plants, mostly all kinds of heirlooms in a row, only about18 inches apart, some even less. I'm hoping the H202 will take care of any fungal problems. If disease is taken care of, is that kind of close spacing ok? Do you still use baking soda spray, or just use H202?

    Did you make another attempt at treating pepper plants? I have used it on pepper plants with good and bad results. When I properly measure and dilute it, it seemed to be fine. However, I did notice some burn on young plants if left on the surf, so I may have to dilute it further to use as you are. Seemed fine at a 30:1 ratio applied to the soil or in bottom watering.

    Apple cider vinegar and water spray is something you can do every day without any possible burn, and I’ve found it is the best preventative, and treatment. Baking soda should be applied every week.

    Gary, when you say 6Tbsp to 1gallon, are the 6T part of what makes up 1 gallon, or added after getting a gallon. (Because adding 6T first and then topping off is actually a slightly stronger ration than 6T:1gal. I'm not pointing to precision but rather how you actually do it. Thanks... I really appreciate the lab work!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      It actually doesnt matter. But it is 1 gallon of water and then the h2o2. You can actually go higher in the h202 but I found this works just fine.

    1/ How long will the water + Peroxide mixture last in the sprayer?
    2/ Can I go with half gallon water + 4 tablespoon H2O2 instead of 1 gal + 8 tbs? I mean, in theory the ratio remains the same.

    Thanks Gary. I'll start with at least 8T. We're expecting rain showers on Sat & Sun, but I need to start something now. Will spray w/H2O2 tomorrow (Fri), then, start again when rain stops, but not sure if I should go to Serenade, or keep going with H2O2. What do you think? It's so hot here, that most everything is in the shade, or partial shade; no other way to keep them alive & healthy. Any additional tips you might have are surely welcomed. Much thanks!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I would work your way up with the H202 ratios too like I did. Just good practice. I might clean them up with H202 and then go to serenade. After 7 days see how they look. Maybe H202 if needed and wait a few days and serenade again. Just create a routine. I see h202 as kill off the fungi and the other options working to prevent them from establishing on the leaves. Let me know what works. I am still deciding how to incorporate H202 into my whole routine. Right now it just daily rain.

    that's a brave experiment, since using O2 or even O3 has a non-specific oxidative effect on contact only, on all organic and inorganic matter. i've only used hydrogen peroxide on soil.
    wander if potassium permanganate has any use in garden. used to use it for new aquarium fish and plants to kill pathogens.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rain was just not treating the garden well. So just to be clear is oxidized the reduction of the h202 to h20 and O. I know it is the release of the 0 that causes the 'cleaning' so to speak but just wanted clarity.

    • @Chris-op7yt
      @Chris-op7yt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) : oxidization is the interaction of oxygen with what it touches. If oxygen touches iron, you get rust. you're getting a more reactive oxygen from hydrogen peroxide, which affects all organic matter in similar way to burning it. in a fairly mild sort of way. obviously a weak solution affects mostly weakenned parts of leaf previously attacked by fungi. it will also kill the fungi on contact but has zero protective properties. if anything, it has possibility to weaken existing protective leaf tissue if not careful.

    • @YolklahomaRocks
      @YolklahomaRocks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris-op7yt So to clarify "damage to protective leaf tissue" would be where it was sprayed..correct? So if the fungi was killed and the plant had healthy new growth...the new growth would be fine unless sprayed?

    • @Chris-op7yt
      @Chris-op7yt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yolklahoma Rocks : i'm saying that oxidation is non-specific. Hopefully the fungi oxidizes at lower concentration, before oxidation injures stomata and other plant cells. So you have to be careful about the strength of the solution. It doesnt target fungi somehow.

    • @YolklahomaRocks
      @YolklahomaRocks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dr. Gary. The Serenade is probably used for squash powdery mildew, am I correct? I'm still not sure how it is spelled, but nursery outlets most likely will have it in stock, I again am assuming. Last year I had a good bit of PM and remedies were only temporary. I sprayed milk, soda and something else but that slips my mind at this time. I will try to find serenade for PM this year. Bob

    I'm a bit confused. At the beginning of the video and at 17:22, you say that the Hydrogen Peroxide doesn't prevent the fungi that causes the leaf spots. Rather, it reacts with the fungi once the plant already has it and kills it off.
    But at 16:42 you suggested to use the 6-8 tbs strength as a preventative to leaf spot fungus, stating..."if you don't see the fungus but you know it's arriving" & "a way to prevent the fungus from getting hold".

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that wasn't clear. In the description of the video it is clearer when to use 6=8. Sometimes its hard to shoot and talk sometimes. The lower ratio is good if you see some spots like when it is just starting. Or if you know the fungi always comes... you start spraying and are basically cleaning off the spores that land on the leaves.

      So mine was an experiment but start with a lower dose. Spray. Wait 48 hours. Spray again if needed. You probably have to do a couple cycles. You can use the lower doses probably daily but key is to experiment and create a routine that works in your garden.

    Hey gary thanks for the video. I was wondering if you have heard of using milk for blight, fungus, mildews and soft bodied garden pests. I have read one University study where it increased production about 20% With 1 or 2 applications. More applications than that showed no further improvements My garden is much too small to do a definitive test. I have heard and read some very positive testimonies on its usage. Would love to see a complete work up on it, like is it the lactic acid? the milk fats? The sugars feeding the micro organisms? What works best 2%?, Whole?, Raw unpasteurized? powdered? I have used Whole milk on cannabis and roses. My results at least showed no damage and happier healthier plants at a mixture of 3 part water to 1 part whole milk I limited it to 2 sprays per year in fear of the milk fats blocking water and oxygen intake to the soil.. Does it work better for powdery mildew than hydrogen peroxide due to the fact that once the extra molecule of oxygen is released the remaining water is still there making it easier to get the mold again? Milk does give off the smell of milk gone bad the next day so for indoor use not recommended. It will also leave a whit residue which I am unsure whether that keeps the mildew from reoccurring till absorbed by the plant as food.. Also is milk even safe anymore with all the hormones and chemical additives? I would love to see results of someone I trusted like you. I am in no way affiliated with the dairy industry though I have had a fondness for milk from a very young age. Thoughts? possible future study? If it does all I have heard it is a garden wonder and usable to the day of harvest, readily accessible, hard to misuse and inexpensive

      SO I am reading about it and there is truth there. The new studies say it needs to be done in the sun as a milk protein reacts with UV and manages the plant leaves. I got cloudy days and rain when I needed to use it. I was experimenting this year. I did get no damage and a slowing of powdery mildew. I used 1% and 50 water and 50 milk. But I need to do a lot more. H202 is cheaper though and very effective.

    Great video! I'm gonna use this method for some new succulents I received from a friend. All of them have PM . I'd like to use a systemic after I use the peroxide. Does the Serenade leave an unattractive residue on the plant if sprayed on it ? I'll likely use it as a drench . But I was curious about how it makes the plant look when sprayed . Thanks for your videos. They're so helpful 😊

    So do you suggest using the hydrogen peroxide as a preventative? Possibly start using it on young plants? If used as a preventative, how often would you use it? Or do you only use it once you have a problem?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely when you see the problem. I would use it preventatively too The day before you would put down you baking soda or other preventatives, spray with h202. Clean up the leaves. And put down you preventative sprays the next day. I am still working out the routine so anyones input would be great.

    I dilute 35% H2O2 down to 3% by putting 1 tablespoon of H2O2 into a gallon of water. The reason I start with pure food grade (35%) H2O2 is that some 3% dilutions that are sold in grocery stores may have additives that your plant may not like. I sprayed the mulch (not the leaves) in my containers (once) as a preventative on 8 July and didn't have any issues. On 2 Aug I saw some leaf spot on one of my plants, so this morning (if not raining) I will spray my leaves, and do that every other day for a week. Here is a link that discusses this in detail, as well as using H2O2 in your seed starting, and as fertilizer every time you water your plants. I am also copying the most important stuff to know right now that could be of help to you: Found this on the interwebz over a month ago ..... wish I'd found it a couple years ago! Take care.
    Tomato Diseases
    Tomatoes are particularly prone to the development of fungal disorders - such as tomato blight, anthracnose, leaf mold and powdery mildew - and bacterial infections - such as bacterial wilt and bacterial canker. The hot, humid climates in which tomatoes flourish can also encourage the development of blossom-end rot, a disease that begins as a patch of decay on the bottom of the ripening fruit. Many tomato maladies are related to excess moisture and can be prevented by limiting watering. However, during periods of wet weather, this may not be possible, and additional measures may be required to prevent the spread of an infection.
    Peroxide Treatment
    At the first sign of a plant disorder, spray the affected foliage with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to coat both sides of the leaves and spray the soil surrounding the base of the plant; this will help eradicate any bacteria or fungus that may be affecting the roots of the tomato vine. Apply the spray 2-3 times a week until the disease is no longer evident.
    Deterring Diseases
    To help prevent development of tomato diseases, choose resistant varieties and be sure the plants are widely spaced to encourage the circulation of fresh air. To avoid blocking air movement, do not plant tomatoes near shrubs, walls or solid fences. Water tomatoes in the morning to give the leaves adequate time to dry, and do not work with the plants while the foliage is still damp; this encourages the transfer of diseases from one plant to the next.
    Take care of infected plants immediately and remove those that do not respond to treatment. DO NOT add to your compost pile. Many of these organisms will survive for years in compost and soil.

      Where you do buy food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide?

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will warn you that shipping is high for this product ..... you may want to do a little more research on your own for perhaps a better deal. I am going to try and find a 3% source that is certified clean of any additives. That is the better bet in my opinion.
      www.hydroempire.com/product/alchemist-h2o2-liquid-oxygen-34/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI08PkxrCr2wIVgjyBCh3lWQsnEAEYASAAEgIdt_D_BwE

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You get it down to 3% by taking 1 tablespoon of food grade 34/35% H2O2 and mixing with 1 gallon of water (preferably distilled water). So yes .... I'm then using 3% H2O2 on my plants. From the link:
      "At the first sign of a plant disorder, spray the affected foliage with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to coat both sides of the leaves and spray the soil surrounding the base of the plant; this will help eradicate any bacteria or fungus that may be affecting the roots of the tomato vine. Apply the spray 2-3 times a week until the disease is no longer evident.
      " Note: anywhere in the link where it mentions 3% H2O2, it is talking about 3% derived from food grade 35% H2O2, not the store bought stuff that comes already reduced to 3%. The premise is that you know you are getting "pure" if you reduce it yourself. You will know that nothing else has been added to your hydrogen peroxide that can damage your plant. If you want to make sure that the water you are using from your tap is not adding anything either .... use distilled water to mix with the 35% H2O2 instead of tap water. So far I'm using distilled water. If you have anything more to ask ..... don't hesitate. I follow all instructions according to the link provided. It seems the author has gone the safest route to try and ensure nothing interferes with the purity of the product, and that he can repeat results. I does seem like a lot of bother to get to 3% H2O2 this way. I'd like to find an already mixed 3% solution that guarantees it's purity, so I don't have to worry about damaging or killing my plants with unwanted additives. I'm going to look for one. Take care.
