The questions have been pretty hyper specific so far, so I totally get them not getting that one. They were trying to figure out why he would run, not prove he was trying to run.

Really this game is when it hit me that all throughout history, people being accused of cowardice and branded as deserters and such...a lot of that could've been PTSD. I'm sure some really were cowards...but even then, is fearing a potentially brutal death that bad? Granted, now, you don't wanna put yourself in harms way, just friggin' don't enlist. Or know you aren't cut out when you can't stand men shouting at you and waking up at all hours of the morning every day to run. But a thousand years ago? Had to fight cuz you were an able bodied male. Really makes you shake the tree to see what falls out.
So Cole literally put his hand in a pile of goo that used to be his best friend's face. And apparently what he told him to do was lie down all night until he got a promotion. Thanks, goo face!
I don't understand the point of the flashback. Was it to suggest that Cole was unjustly rewarded for being a coward? He was fighting same as the rest, he wasn't in any way out of the range of the Japanese soldiers who had the bloody mess perk. It's not like he was forcing people to stay, he was like "the major is dead, we're being massacred", which by the way is a suggestion of what they should do next, not him being already running away. And then, as was already decided, they got massacred. Was it for hiding in a foxhole? That's exactly what you learn to dig them for, so you don't get ripped to shreds, it's basically like a gas mask or a bayonet, a tool designed and meant for a specific scenario. Occupying territory and not dying is literally the sole thing that every battle has been about forever, Cole getting credit for winning the battle is because he literally did the thing that he was supposed to, you're supposed to not die. Everyone getting killed in a battle while invading Japan, who entered the war with people who purposefully died on the very first day, would never be an unthinkable possibility, you can pretty much count on they're trying to kill literally all of you, and you just do what you can to work backwards from there into what will be a battle with an acceptable amount of people who die. Kelso being mad at Phelps is ridiculous, it doesn't negate his participation in the Marines, the war, or the battle, he's not being rewarded because he cut the heoff off the fucking emperor. That's like if he was a fireman who dug a surviving first responder out of the rubble after 9/11 and getting furious are him that he would be be called a hero, because he was trapped under rubble but didn't die.
You made some good points here. I think though it was more that Cole has survival guilt. I'm sure there are tons of soldiers over all wars that survived brutal conflicts. I guess maybe they are trying to imply that all the rewards and accolades Cole got, to him, were all BS because he was a bit of a glory hound (which to be fair, he was) yet when the time came to be a "hero" he buckled under the pressure. But again, that's super common, you can call it "shell shock" or whatever. I also think that kind of mentality back in the 1940s plays a role in displaying Cole that he was a "coward", not knowing what we know now what kind of fucked up things soldiers go through (i.e. PTSD).
