Ran 11 miles, at a local park. I was wearing a pair of Vibram V- trail shoes. I wanted to stay light so instead of carrying a water bottle I had my water filtration system and when I needed some water I just ran down to the river and had a drink. Truly a grand day out.

QD: Hit the trail a couple of days ago in Salomon Speedcross 5, yellow shoe with grey detailing and black tongue. Dry trail for the run, moderately challenging for my ability level, had a great time. Dirt singletrack through the woods, lots of up-and-downs through ravines and a couple of shallow creek crossings. Temperatures in the 80s with high humidity made for a very sweaty, tough run. At the end of the run, however, a wonderful cloudburst came overhead and it *poured* rain on me. Felt SO good to just stand there and get drenched in pounding cool rain! Only drawback on the day: the insole came completely unattached in the right shoe, with less than 100 miles on it.

Nike Trail 2019/2020 matrix, yes please, sir! QOD: 11 miles, forest gravel loop, Pegasus 36 Trail for added grip and padding. I interchange on same route with Peg Turbo 2, which gives me a little better turnover and more snappiness. Also tried Kiger 5, but midsole not as responsive in the forefoot and deeper lugs seem to hold me back on speed.

Had my first ever trail run with these over the weekend. Quick 6km with a bit of elevation and I loved every second of it. I reckon it's a perfect shoe for a newb like me. So comfortable and felt really stable when the trail got loose. They're heavy alright but heaps of fun!

QOD: Did an easy 6 mile trail-run yesterday on Pegasus 36. 20% of my run was very soft (sand) so after your first impression of the Pegasus Trail 2 (which for me is far too heavy), I will now try to get the Pegasus 36 Trail at a reduced price.

Great review as always Seth. I do quite a bit of road to trail running on my long runs. Just wondering which of the Nike trail running shoes you’d recommend and how would you categorise the Nike trail shoes i.e. which shoe would suit what surface/conditions? Stay safe!

Love your enthusiasm, but got to wonder if the weight could have something to do with the fact you were sitting in a creek the day before. Maybe let them dry out a little longer before chucking them on the scales again?

Ran 4.5 miles in the rain in Hoka SG 3 yesterday and about 3 in rain again. Santos Trailhead Ocala, FL. Love the rain and puddles as long as I'm wearing good socks. Such a relief. Past few times try trail couldn't run more than mile feeling tired. Thought have to go back to roads. Whew

I ran 11 miles yesterday on the slopes of Mt Diablo in Northern California, using the Pegasus 36 Trail shoes. They’re great for the trails around here, not too technical, packed dirt and sandstone. I’ve gotten 500 miles out of the Peg 36 Trail and picked up some additional pairs on sale.

I run routinely on the Rio Grande Trail (Roaring Fork Valley, CO) which is dual-surface for bikes, walkers, runners, so I can use road shoes even on the packed dirt side. I’ve been trying out the NB 880 v10. My trail shoe (I don’t ever need a very aggressive one) is the Brooks Pure Grit. I’ve written here before that it’s a good road-to-trail shoe, lightweight, low drop, has a rock plate (I believe) and nice tread that doesn’t trap pebbles or stones.

Terra kiger 5 for me, just 6 miles. Lots of dry loose sand so, it didn't really matter. Few small hills and fast corners for wich they provide good grip. They always feel so fast and they seem to be extremely durable. I love that I can do short fast intervals and also marathon distances with em. I do live in the Netherlands, so I have no rocky surfaces and no long climbs to compare my experiences to.

Thank you! I didn't know there was a name for road to trail shoes. Like you said, I live about ~2 miles to my local trail route in NYC. Usually I'd run the trails in one of my regular road shoes that has a sturdy rubber sole ( Ultraboost, 1080v9, Triumph 17), and I still feel significant slippage on the trails. (Light bridle trail).
Looks like I'll pick it up.

IQD: Yesterday I ran in the Topo Ultraventure. It's a sleeper. You don't seem to hear much about this shoe but it's very comfortable and the toe box is perfect in accommodating a wider foot but it's not too wide. The drop is 5mm which is that sweet spot for me. Used the Peg 36 Trail the day before and did commute from my home to the trails. Excellent for that purpose and just wish the Peg 2 Trail wasn't so heavy.

  • @simon6652

I done a 17 mile road run on my Peg 36 trail today and they felt great 👍🏻. I’m weigh 93kg as well, so I’m a heavy runner and heavy footed. I am new to running though, normally a hiker but I’ve booked my first marathon for next April. From England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 love your content, keep it up!

I ran 45k (28mi) on Saturday on the trails and rough gravel roads near home in a new pair of Pegasus 36 Trails. There were some rough technical sections and some "runable" sections, with lots of short hills and a few longish hills. The gravel roads start about 800m from home, so not much of a commute. I'm training for a 105k ultramarathon in mid-July (unconfirmed at this stage). Much of this race is on similar terrain, although there is a big climb up a mountain every lap (5 x 21k laps) which I haven't trained for. Because of that, I think the Pegasus 36 Trail is ideal. I was excited to learn that you were doing this review, but disappointed that the Pegasus Trail 2 is so heavy. I wear an 11 or 11.5, so it would be difficult to drag that up the mountain and through the saddle behind it. I'll just try to pick up another pair of the Pegasus 36 Trails in the next 6 weeks so I have a spare pair if it's raining.

Trailroc 285 for hill repeats on the trails. A short hill with a grade that climbs from 3% to 30% in an 1k loop.. 10 times, with the last one all out and a PB for that segment. QoD: July 6th I ran 24k, ~6k total on pavement, 18 or so on trails.
My trail shoes are the "Salomon Sense Ride 3"s. The traction is really good on these shoes I think. I'm a novice trail runner but I had a really good experience plugging up rocky, rooty inclines, and I also had no issues going down some steeper hills covered in rubble and rocks. My only issue is the lacing system. After a while it gives a bit, and my foot starts to move a little bit in the shoe and I can feel the friction. Not tremendously bad but it was noticeable. Otherwise the shoes feel nice and super light on my feet. I feel springy and confident over technical bits.

Ran 5k on trail on Friday in the Pegasus 36 Trail. I've ordered the Pegasus Trail 2, which will be here this week. Looking to use the react cushioning for longer trail runs, and as commuter from my home to the trails near me. Hopefully, the added weight will be offset by the durability. I did a comparison of two my favorite trail shoes. I did a 20 miler in the Salomon S/lab ultra 2 days ago. I did back to back long runs and ran 22 miles in the Terra kiger 5 yesterday. That Peg Trail 2 looks like a sneaker head's/ athleisure kinda shoe to me. Marketed towards those that think they need a trail shoe for their 2-mile-run in the park. I'll pass. Too much drop and too built up for serious trails.

Rather than Nike matrix, would love to see a general trail shoe matrix. I keep going back to the various websites to compare lug depth versus drop versus heel to toe height. Matrix would help loads. Nike not really the reference in trail shoes in our part of the world. Ran 22km / 1300m vertical in speedgoats. Don’t love the crazy stack of the SG for that much climbing but sure helped recovery over that distance.

I‘ve had three daily trainers with a non-padded tongue and I did‘t like any of them. Who ever asked for that?
Also what is the grip like on wet surfaces? My Peg Trail 36 GTX was so bad, to the point of being dangerous. I had a very close call on a metal expansion joint on a bridge and light frozen rain is also a nightmare. Had to relegate them to dry weather use only.
