Seeing our channel in the middle of the video was quite the surprise! Very cool of you to share these insights with everyone. In our six years here it's certainly been a bit of a roller coaster as the algorithm has gone through changes. I can only imagine how many factors the YT team has to consider. It's a good reminder to simply pursue what you love and give the best effort you can. Trying to ride a trend might work in the short term, but the world invariably moves on to something new.

Bounces may occur, but the fact remains... they are still making money in a cheap way and try to be enthusiastic behind it. Click bating/Content leaks is a trend in today's time maybe not in the music, or review genres of youtbe, but its everywhere on the gaming, movie side. I had to unsub 7 ppl b/c I grew tired of it. When I see videos like Pewdiepie gonna delete his channel 1st thing that comes to mind is that is complete BS. This guy is making thousands of dollars every month probably even more its crap like that big youtubers can get away with in terms of click baiting. Would you cut off your thousand dollar investment after achieving 50 million subs?
JTEgaming yep it's nearly impossible to get big now, it's been that way for a few years. Unless you have a really cool and unique idea that someone *has never done before* it's nearly impossible.
Make a company, basically you need way more then one person for your channel to be successful, because one person trying to put out the amount of content required to stay retentive is nearly impossible. My channel isn't monetized and I only put out videos when it's what I want to do, I'm not looking to make money or get popular I just want to share my fun with others when I have it. That's one of the ways you got to approach making content, do you want to make money or have fun, or make a lot less money and have fun.
I've had my channel for a while now and my videos are decent quality too. But i'll never blow up because it's just me, in college and no time to create a ton of content to keep up with demand. I'll probably never be super big but that's okay. I record game play with my best friends because we're hilarious! I edit because I find video editing fun (Except for editing my own voice *Eww*). I upload to TH-cam (a magical place that I spend a lot of my life) because I hope for people to watch my content and maybe get some giggles out of it. I don't care if I become huge. Would I like it? SURE! But who wouldn't? No matter what happens just keep creating because its what YOU enjoy. That's what every one like you, like me, and everyone like us must do.
It's impossible to "start something popular" even in the real world. If you WANT to be popular, you will make the same thing than the other popular peoples, right? But in this case, why bother with you if the popular one is doing exactly the same? It's like thinking "there are already 6 restaurants in my street so i will create a 7th" and only AFTER that, the owner understand he can't get the needed customers to make the business work : they are already in the other restaurants. And if you have an original idea... well it will be so original that nobody will search for it in the search tab. The popular channels weren't popular just by doing videos and simply waiting the money to come, they did what they wanted to do when they noted it wasn't already on TH-cam. Else you are a professional and doing many advertising through your network of relations or your money, else you will need to be lucky ;)

Yep, which is stupid because the big companies already had access to youtube. What gets youtube money is views to sell adspace and data. What gets those views is good content. What gets youtube the best content is giving as open of a platform as possible for the most people to be able to compete with the giants on a level playing ground. This will only result in a decline in youtube's traffic as they lower the bar by making the conditions preferable to giants who release inferior content.

Civil Car Back before you could make money on YT... many people(especially from the OG PC days...) were just fine seeing a new upload once a week or so. This was a website made for SHARING content, a community. Not to give people jobs. So I , nor others wouldnt have even met those people you mention, we wouldve simple been satisfied with how YT was. You are right. That is what is want to do, yet it want to give power to the creators as well. That is why there is a button called "Donate to this Channel". I believe the best way to promote the creators we like is to click that button or go to "Patron" where one donate money for them to continue what they like.

I was once solely a consumer of Mat's actual theories about games but there's something about turning 20 that sparks your sudden interest in the mechanism that lies below. As English is not my first language, had I watched this some years before the whole video would just fly over me and I'd click away after the first 3 minutes. I really appreciate Mat crunching numbers for us and I'm sure this will stay relevant until TH-cam implemented another new algorithm (which by the time this is written they might have). It's a shame though now that with this algorithm, channels with videos that have a long span of relevance will lose over channels that update videos daily regardless of its content.
They've never really been that good, just the memes and trends of the year with some crap music playing over it. They decline in quality on a yearly basis.

This change makes small channels worthless, and no new blood will ever be seen because they literally cannot compete with people who do this for a living in the same way big channels cant handle the work load of a full team going 24/7. This could kill the youtube experience of broadcasting yourself, making content you want to see and enjoy with like minded people. TH-cam should be about passion and not fame! But there is no reason to make and produce something (even if you love the work) if nobody will EVER see it. Why would you put in the effort just to drop it into the void. It would be like writing a best seller and having it conveniently available under a rock... You can find it but how would you know to look there?

I was watching Casey Neistat daily when his vlog was still up, and was unsubbed twice. I always made sure to like his videos as well after watching them all the way through, because I always thought youtube might not count likes that are given right away before the video is completely viewed. I honestly still think it's a bug they haven't found and are too embarrassed to admit to the possibility. Best of luck in your hunt for data!

Fantastic information and video MatPat. Your findings line up with mine nearly perfectly; Audience Retention is far less important than Total Minutes Watched, likes and comments do very little, and not making daily long form content makes growing much more difficult. What I would add into this is TH-cam's push for Total Session Watch Time which is resulting in an explosion of children's content as well as the Click through rate receiving increased importance. I loved your analogy of the treadmill continuing to increase in speed.

What's sad is that after all this, TH-cam is still a company and like every other company, no matter how good or bad they are to the people working for them, they will still care first and foremost about their profit. It's the blood of every company that keeps them running.
What makes me upset is that people are upset. I know youtube is where a lot of people make a living, but youtube itself is a business that cares less about creative rights and more about the video views from creators. TH-cam has always been fickle, going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't, and there's so much drama and poison there that I wouldn't want to make it big and garner the attention of the things and types of youtubers that I hate. TH-cam should be a hobby, not a job, especially because it is its own business that hardly has any relationship with those who partner with it and make their own content. It's a weird quagmire that I enjoy being a part of from afar, especially knowing that all the drama doesn't affect me personally.
TH-cam has become "too big to fail" I think. The people complaining that TH-cam isn't acting for the viewers/youtubers are the same who think a picture posted on Internet is free of Copyright rights. "going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't" Well, that's probably the only thing TH-cam can't control at all : if they don't want to be sued according to DMCA, they must remove any content asked by the right-holding companies... So their rules have been created according to limits given by producers.

Watch pewdiepie's video, he said from the suggested he gets 31% of views, but a lot of those videos are old ones, before youtube fucked up big. Recent videos have like 0.1% views from suggested, so youtube suggests old videos so: 1. New videos don't get a lot of views 2. Seem like everything's normal
probably because 2016 was a really bad year....nothing great came out. things that should consider childish or stupid AF became trends and social-acceptable, and it's really sad....

Seeing our channel in the middle of the video was quite the surprise! Very cool of you to share these insights with everyone. In our six years here it's certainly been a bit of a roller coaster as the algorithm has gone through changes. I can only imagine how many factors the YT team has to consider. It's a good reminder to simply pursue what you love and give the best effort you can. Trying to ride a trend might work in the short term, but the world invariably moves on to something new.
It's good to see big channels getting involved with other videos and being an active part of the community

OMG THE ALGORITHMS CHANGED AGAIN, I watched this vid just over 2 years ago and when I searched “hunger games” I got the same results you predicted. I decided to do this again a year later to see if it still worked... there was absolutely nothing about Minecraft. Instead it was what you showed first as an example of what wasn’t what would show... if that makes sense. Maybe TH-cam trying to prove you wrong, please do a new TH-cam vid!

Views count towards monetization with the help of ads. Bounces may occur, but the fact remains... they are still making money in a cheap way and try to be enthusiastic behind it. Click bating/Content leaks is a trend in today's time maybe not in the music, or review genres of youtbe, but its everywhere on the gaming, movie side. I had to unsub 7 ppl b/c I grew tired of it. When I see videos like Pewdiepie gonna delete his channel 1st thing that comes to mind is that is complete BS. This guy is making thousands of dollars every month probably even more its crap like that big youtubers can get away with in terms of click baiting. Would you cut off your thousand dollar investment after achieving 50 million subs?

JTEgaming yep it's nearly impossible to get big now, it's been that way for a few years. Unless you have a really cool and unique idea that someone *has never done before* it's nearly impossible.

Make a company, basically you need way more then one person for your channel to be successful, because one person trying to put out the amount of content required to stay retentive is nearly impossible. My channel isn't monetized and I only put out videos when it's what I want to do, I'm not looking to make money or get popular I just want to share my fun with others when I have it. That's one of the ways you got to approach making content, do you want to make money or have fun, or make a lot less money and have fun.
I've had my channel for a while now and my videos are decent quality too. But i'll never blow up because it's just me, in college and no time to create a ton of content to keep up with demand. I'll probably never be super big but that's okay. I record game play with my best friends because we're hilarious! I edit because I find video editing fun (Except for editing my own voice *Eww*). I upload to TH-cam (a magical place that I spend a lot of my life) because I hope for people to watch my content and maybe get some giggles out of it. I don't care if I become huge. Would I like it? SURE! But who wouldn't? No matter what happens just keep creating because its what YOU enjoy. That's what every one like you, like me, and everyone like us must do.
It's impossible to "start something popular" even in the real world.
If you WANT to be popular, you will make the same thing than the other popular peoples, right?
But in this case, why bother with you if the popular one is doing exactly the same?
It's like thinking "there are already 6 restaurants in my street so i will create a 7th" and only AFTER that, the owner understand he can't get the needed customers to make the business work : they are already in the other restaurants.
And if you have an original idea... well it will be so original that nobody will search for it in the search tab.
The popular channels weren't popular just by doing videos and simply waiting the money to come, they did what they wanted to do when they noted it wasn't already on TH-cam.
Else you are a professional and doing many advertising through your network of relations or your money, else you will need to be lucky ;)

Watching youtube everyday and don't freakin care about about big companies with thousand employees. TH-cam forgot who's watching videos. We don't come here to just look at annoying vids. It's greatest strength was that it allowed people a platform to be themselves and make money so of course the next logical step of action is to develop a system to where only mainstream networks make money and compete.
Yep, which is stupid because the big companies already had access to youtube. What gets youtube money is views to sell adspace and data. What gets those views is good content. What gets youtube the best content is giving as open of a platform as possible for the most people to be able to compete with the giants on a level playing ground.
This will only result in a decline in youtube's traffic as they lower the bar by making the conditions preferable to giants who release inferior content.
Just like when we could have went with Tesla's concept for energy but instead went with Edison. Building Tesla coils and proposing free energy doesn't help big companies profit from the 99%

I was once solely a consumer of Mat's actual theories about games but there's something about turning 20 that sparks your sudden interest in the mechanism that lies below. As English is not my first language, had I watched this some years before the whole video would just fly over me and I'd click away after the first 3 minutes. I really appreciate Mat crunching numbers for us and I'm sure this will stay relevant until TH-cam implemented another new algorithm (which by the time this is written they might have).
It's a shame though now that with this algorithm, channels with videos that have a long span of relevance will lose over channels that update videos daily regardless of its content.

This change makes small channels worthless, and no new blood will ever be seen because they literally cannot compete with people who do this for a living in the same way big channels cant handle the work load of a full team going 24/7. This could kill the youtube experience of broadcasting yourself, making content you want to see and enjoy with like minded people. TH-cam should be about passion and not fame! But there is no reason to make and produce something (even if you love the work) if nobody will EVER see it. Why would you put in the effort just to drop it into the void. TH-cam broadcast yourself doesn't exist anymore, they replaced it with youtube movie section and youtube music section.
D- Man you do have a point, but then again, it is smart from a business perspective, because you get alot if big fish, that you can make deals with, while the small fish doesn't matter. us "CyberHipsters" are slowly moving away from youtube, because it simply won't matter as you said yourself. but then again, it was 1000000 times easier to start on youtube in 2009 than 2014. no one would find you anyway in a steady stream of a billion videos a day. I've come to the conclusion after doing youtube on 5 different channels since 2009. I do editing, artwork, graphics, animations, sound and so on for youtube channels and other people, and I must admit, that none of them made it big, because at the end of the day, you have to be so incredibly lucky to get viral/trending/userinteraction these days.

I was watching Casey Neistat daily when his vlog was still up, and was unsubbed twice.
I always made sure to like his videos as well after watching them all the way through, because I always thought youtube might not count likes that are given right away before the video is completely viewed.
I honestly still think it's a bug they haven't found and are too embarrassed to admit to the possibility.

Your findings line up with mine nearly perfectly; Audience Retention is far less important than Total Minutes Watched, likes and comments do very little, and not making daily long form content makes growing much more difficult. What I would add into this is TH-cam's push for Total Session Watch Time which is resulting in an explosion of children's content as well as the Click through rate receiving increased importance. I loved your analogy of the treadmill continuing to increase in speed.

What's sad is that after all this, TH-cam is still a company and like every other company, no matter how good or bad they are to the people working for them, they will still care first and foremost about their profit. It's the blood of every company that keeps them running.
What makes me upset is that people are upset. I know youtube is where a lot of people make a living, but youtube itself is a business that cares less about creative rights and more about the video views from creators. TH-cam has always been fickle, going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't, and there's so much drama and poison there that I wouldn't want to make it big and garner the attention of the things and types of youtubers that I hate. TH-cam should be a hobby, not a job, especially because it is its own business that hardly has any relationship with those who partner with it and make their own content. It's a weird quagmire that I enjoy being a part of from afar, especially knowing that all the drama doesn't affect me personally.
TH-cam has become "too big to fail" I think.
The people complaining that TH-cam isn't acting for the viewers/youtubers are the same who think a picture posted on Internet is free of Copyright rights.

Well, that's probably the only thing TH-cam can't control at all : if they don't want to be sued according to DMCA, they must remove any content asked by the right-holding companies...

Watch pewdiepie's video, he said from the suggested he gets 31% of views, but a lot of those videos are old ones, before youtube fucked up big.
Recent videos have like 0.1% views from suggested, so youtube suggests old videos so:
1. New videos don't get a lot of views
2. Seem like everything's normal
