I'm a big fan of this game, so I know a lot about it. Here's a few things to point out:
- Sigma Beast can actually be hurt while red. The color Sigma Beast is determines which character can cause damage to him. When he's red, Zero can attack him enough to deal damage. When he's blue, X can deal enough.
- Again with Sigma Beast, his seemingly unavoidable shield dash attack actually can be repelled by attacking the shield with either a charge shot (as X when Sigma is blue) or the Z-Saber (as Zero when Sigma is red). Hitting the shield will push Sigma back much like the Sphinx Tank.
- Dr. Doppler did actually manage to completely eradicate the Maverick Virus and Sigma at the end of X3, the only problem was that Sigma's DNA soul was still active (although unable to find a proper body to inhabit seeing as how X destroyed his Perfect Battle Body form). This game actually shows that Berkana amd Gareth managed to "resurrect" Sigma through this soul erasure process and ties X3 to X4. This game is actually one of the most integral plot beats in the entire X series that NOBODY played.
Yeah the Red/Blue mechanic was pretty obvious.

It's not really a great translation, no, but its a concept visited multiple times in the X and Zero series; a Reploid's "DNA Soul" is the Reploid's "essence", or their data, as it exists in Cyberspace. That's what the plot of this game was about, the process of reviving a Reploid by recreating their "DNA Soul" in Cyberspace. It's also what Gate's research was originally about.

It's also incredibly silly that people have to recommend newcomers to experience the story in reverse order or online. I'll have to play the legacy collection-version with checkpoints because I tried the GBA version of Zero1 and lol.
So I'm not the only one eternally disappointed by how Iris gets like, no screen time? Awesome. Little sad that the fucking crossover game, Project X Zone, does more with Iris than her own franchise.
Heck, Mega Man X Dive and Battle Network 6 has done more with Iris than the X games ever did!.

Don't really see how robot souls is that far out of a concept in the series in retrospect. Cyberspace is a physical place you can force your physical body into as shown in the zero games, and that reploids are human in their own right is sort of the overall theme of the series onward. Not crazy to believe they have a weird cyber soul lol
Yep and in Cyberspace in Zero 3 all your cyberelfs get activated making you very op until you exit it.
Human souls is a far stranger concept. It's this totally made up story-time concept, and yet everyone believes it like souls are real?! I don't get it.
Also, X6 set up, "Nightmare SOULs" which is one of the main systems that the game sets up.

Like how the actual Software that makes Zero who he is (his "soul") can be taken out of the hardware made by Wily only to have a completely different OS (Omega) Installed on it to get it working as intended.

Minor correction on the final sigma fight, though I doubt this would be seen. The pink/red form can actually be damaged by zero, though it isn't easy. Blue is meant to be damaged by X. The point of the fight is to swap between who can damage him, though it doesn't work well in execution.

6:01 Bruh, Sigma's goal in the first game was to wipe out all the humans. That's not even bringing up the role they play in the Zero games onwards.
I guess to be fair on Trav, the humans are kind of just ignored for a majority of the games with only some passing mention and never really have any physical appearances in the plot outside of Dr. Cain and (if you count him) Dr. Light, the Zero games not withstanding. It's always been one element of the plot I wish the series had expanded on a bit more.
I thought that Sigma may have been offended that Berkana was hurting Reploids, "his people", after all.
Dunno if it's been addressed, but Trav, you don't have to take that platform in Hornet's level to get the heart tank. Right before you enter the section where the tank is, you can take a ladder (Ironic that you didn't even notice it as you climbed back up) down and simply just cross that way. Lol
That's how I got that all the time I did not know you can ride the platform down to get it that way.

One positive I always had about this game growing up was some of the songs in this game had better bangers than the originals, for example, Launch Octopus in my opinion.
It's the little changes they did to the songs that I just love to prefer over

I got the flame mammoth weapon with zero instead of x and then couldn't get x's upgrade with it even though it was still a fire weapon hitting a flammable thing

Being real, the music in this game is tight, i think the game boy versions of these songs sound better than the snes versions (but this may be the nostalgia talking)
No, it's not just your nostalgia. The X2 Intro Stage, Wire Sponge, X Hunter Stage 2... It's hard to find a song that _doesn't_ sound better or at least as good on GBC. (though I still can't forgive them for cutting Volt Catfish's theme in half)
Ok I don’t want to be that guy but about the DNA souls that is what they are called , canonically it contains everything that a reploid is like they’re blue prints, design, memories and personality so the game isn’t technically wrong it’s just the way iris said it was wrong
I guess my problem comes down to my world view, and that the concept of a "human soul" is subjective. It works great in Doom cause it's thematic for the series, but confusing in a Science Fiction world for me.

Gareth is the name of one of Arthur's knights of the round table. Maybe a bit odd to choose one of the lesser known knights rather than Mordred or Lancelot, but the knight motif fits with the name even so =)
I had this game since I was very young, my aunt game it to me along with her Game Boy Color. I’ve played it multiple times.
And even I never noticed that it said “research lavatory.”
X can equip 4 parts if you don't complete the armor, which makes him very powerful if you skip his head parts and instead use Zero's head parts to get X's arm parts.
The Energy Saver lets you use the Zero Final twice, which makes most bosses a joke.
Beast Sigma turning red is supposed to be your cue to use Zero.
My two cents is that Gareth was based on Sir Gareth from Knights of the table.. So yeah I'm probably the only one who think he's cool and Berkanah could be a reference to Morgan Le Fay keeping up with the Arthurian legend

The was actually the ending opening theme for X6 playing there, which is called The Answer by Showtaro Morikubo (the voice actor of X and Dynamo that time)

Even tho these Villains are one-note I Love Berkana's Design Cuz We Barely get any female Villains in Megaman in General, It's the Witch style Attire I'm a sucker for those Design's.
It’s a missed opportunity to develop Iris and Zero’s relationship.
I should mention that the shots coming from Isaz and Sowilo (the Sphinx Tank) will move as the Sphinx Tank moves like if it's all one layer. For example, let's say the boss starts moving back. If a missile is moving downward and the tank is moving back, the missile will move back as well. Overall, I agree with your take on a boss that's probably my pick for the worst boss I've played in a Mega Man game, none of my reasons being the fault of the GBC's screen.

I believe the use of Moonlight as a promo song for Xtreme 2 was due to Morikubo (Singer of both X6's amazing opening themes: Moonlight and The Answer) being the VA for X.

Frankly I think it’s best to ignore the DNA part of the DNA souls and just assume that they are simply reploid souls.

My guess for why Capcom made Xtreme 2 for the GBC instead of the GBA is that this was only a few months after the latter system's release, so the developers either might not have felt it had a big enough install base to develop for it, or they could have just not heard if it until well into development.
I played the Japanese version and if my memory served me right X, Zero, and Iris were discussing the new item drop they found on the island. It is the DNA data of the reploid which they later referred as DNA soul because it is essentially the soul of reploids. And the conclusion is that they should collect them as much as possible.
As for the villain side, they were under the order of Sigma to erase and collect DNA souls from reploids to create stronger reploids or enhance existing reploids. It is still a plain and pale background story but at least it makes sense compare to the badly translated English version lol

This game is honestly amazing as a kid. I was lucky that my dad grabbed a copy of this from a flea market while doing business travel. Kept me busy for a long time at a time when I had very few games. I need to find my old cartridge again.
For the Sphinx boss if you dash up on the platform you can bait the boss into shooting most of its shots off screen. Having figured that out accidentally, I was able to take him down without healing on my first go.
I can imagine a dexter's laboratory blooper, "dee dee, get out of my lavoratory!!!!!" 😂 Dexter is not in his home anymore, "what in the devil is a lavoratory??!! Where's my lab!!!!!"

You can assign dash to the select button in the options if my memory serves, which is fine in X/Zero compaigns, but in Xtreme mode you'll be replacing it with the quick swap. I'll also add that X1 never requires you to dash, even if it does force you to pick those boots up.
The Select Button is for the Special Weapon for X, the Dash function was only in the previus game, and for the Start Button

Not gonna lie, I hated the last stretches of this one, it gets as bad as late X6 at some points.
Never played this game but X3’s double buster is by far the worst buster out of the games I played because X is stuck in place for seconds while performing the shot and a lot times the second buster input is canceled from wall jumping, getting hit from sitting in place for too long, or a lot of times the buster barely hits the narrow hit boxes of bosses from not being precise making it unmeaningful.
So I'm not the only one who had that Blast Hornet midboss softlock. Except it happened in the Zero campaign, so I was beyond confused.

This game has mixed memories for me.
I remember my mom asking me what games I was interested in for Christmas (about 10 years old), and I had already been playing X5 on pc.
I pointed to Megaman right away, as I've been obsessed with the series since the second game on the OG Game Boy.
So the days lead up to Christmas, and my cousin's bday is also in December.
Guess what? It wasn't a Christmas gift for me, but a bday gift for him.

I refrained from completing X's armor so that I can keep giving him 4 upgrade parts. Ultimate buster + Speed shot + Buster Plus 1&2 combined with rapid fire just turns X's buster into a giant flamethrower.

Yo! I remember the dash problem and one thing I hated! It did have a dedicated button…I believe it was select. You know, the tiny button at the bottom of the system no one ever used. That’s why no one knew.

What about the awesome "Boss Rush" Mode you get after beating Xtreme Mode? That was the best part of the game! It was 16 mavericks, all of them from both Xtreme games! I loved it.

And a Harry Potter game released five months after that in the US and a Doremon game released over a year after that in Japan. Still not as crazy as the Super Nintendo in Japan though.
Uhhh, I don't recall Launch Octopus' hurricane attack to be avoidable without the dash upgrade.

So here's a very bizarre genre recommendation I don't think I've ever seen this channel touch on, crpgs, specificlly of the isometric variety. Maybe just the first 2 fallout games, but isometric crpgs are a genre somewhere above immersive sims when it comes to being niche.

Fuck, this game was something else. I have vivid memory as a kid playing as zero, I couldn't find his body armor so I did his whole playthough without it. Fighting Gareth was a bitch. He would literally kill me in 3 hits so I did his fight so many times, I memorized his pattern where I would perfect him.
I don't know how I had the patience for that. Nowadays, nope. Hell, i had so much, I 100% this. Even rebought it on the 3ds and 100% that one too.
Actually you can hurt Sigma when’s he’s pink/red. If he’s yellow/blue, X can only damage him while Zero can hurt his red form. Also Sigma dash attack can be pushed back.

Pretty sure select is a designated dash button, although, probably not much use. But I mean, it's a gameboy. It has literally two face buttons lmao. One button has to be jump and one has to be shoot lol.

Really, the reason DNA souls exist and reploids having "souls" that drift into cyberspace after death and coming back to life wrong unless Wily has a hand on it is because Mega Man, the whole franchise, runs on the same logic as tokusatsu kids programs like Kamen Rider. Don't think too hard about it, it just "makes sense" for the magitek developed by Dr. Light to create X and reverse engineered by Dr. Cain.
Zero seems to still work on old Robot Master technology as opposed to a "Soul", though.
