I had an FM9. I sold it because I hated the work flow. It sounded great, but an awful UI. I have QC and Helix and Kemper. I’m really liking the TMP. It sounds great and is dead simple to use. I find my sounds so much faster. It really has everything I end up using on the others so more stuff isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Your opinion is quite popular. But I totally do not agree. The analog world seems simple because the sound of a real amp is already ready, you don't need to do much to use it. The digital world is a representation of the analog world according to mathematical models. Trying to simplify it means imposing choices and making them work well. Since technology at the moment is still approximate, an imposed choice may be that it suits us but maybe not for some. Having the possibility to intervene on the manufacturer's predefined choices can only be an added value.

It’s just my opinion based on my real life experience with all the modelers. You can feel free to disagree.

My money (if i had any to get gear like this 😆) would go to the Fractal for sure! Its definitely a more mature platform, and with the additional effects and chain flexibility makes it way more appealing. Im sure fender will come out with updates to get it up to par there, but even then, i still trust the Fractals maturity and proven performance. Thanks for the great video as always Leo!

I was wondering if Fender Tone Master Pro is better than my new FM9. And now, this confirmed, my decision that I bought my FM9 last month is very worthy and it's still better than the new Tone Master Pro. Now I know...I'll rest and then go back to enjoy my toy. Lol.

You are doing the best comparisons, thanx for that - really helpful! I have the FM3 for testing right here - the sounds and possibilities are great, but the UI would have looked outdated even at times Windows XP died many years ago. I really cannot understand, why Fractal doesn`t put any effort in updating their UI. Maybe I am just too old (64), and maybe my approach is outdated - but I don't want to use my Macbook everytime when I want to play (and tweak) my rigs. On the other side, sometimes I feel young again ;) and maybe too young - because at these times I cannot use my iPhone or a touchscreen with the FM3. So for what kind of plyer is Fractal working? Who are these players in between oldschool amp usage and fiddling around with knobs and modern age touchscreen users?

Fender has the better all in all unit as such, but has to improve the amp algorithms. Easy, right😂? I'm sure they will in the next fw updates if you just look how incredibly good the Helix developed over the years, for example. Fractal excuses the complexity in handling and in the UI with it being a pro piece of gear. This is such a weak excuse that only real fanboys swallow. The oppositite is the case, imo. Look at apple products, for example, even if you cannot compare Computers to musical grar - but then again you can, if you look at how guitar sound is dialedin in the digital world. Pro AND easy to use. Or just look at TM, Helix all the other units ease of use. Other than that: the TM tone leaves room for improvement, in comparison, I would say.

Yes, I really hope in constant firmware upgrades from fender, like the ones done by Fractal or Line 6 or Boss. The Fender hardware seems good, but sw there is space for improvements in my opinion, both in terms of amps sound and some choice related to the user interface...I don't really understand those 12 fixed signal chains....maybe they allow for better performances...but in terms of usability and possibilities...I think they can be improved. Thanks!

I always enjoy the thoroughness of you demos and insightful opinions. An easy UI has a lot to do with how useful any piece of gear is going to be. The TMP large touch screen is nice but maybe not as useful as one might imagine. Rotary encoder Stomp buttons will probably become standard on new Modelers, as they are a good feature. Surprisingly, I still like my HX Stomp interface, HX Edit, and Helix Native, all for $550 US from a few years ago! Thanks

Same here, you actually don't need to invest more money at the moment. The FM3 is nice, for sure, but at least for me as a producing musician not worth the extra 1.000 dollars. I invest them in a new guitar / bass.

Thanks for another great video. Fractal's JCM 800 obliterates Fender's.
I guess that for modelers, Fractal is the way to go if you have the money. The only problem I see with the FM3 is that, despite its great sound quality, it seems limited in process power, at least from some demonstrations I've seen. A normal rig will sound fantastic, but if you want to get "creative", the DSP limit will certainly hit you.

surprised how far off the TMP was on the Marshall amp JCM 800 & your saying also with the Plexi - I have not pulled the trigger on a modeler as of yet hopefully Fractal will have touch screens on the next versions - If Fender gets on the ball adds more amps & effects and the capture feature that would be game changing - Great demo Leo

A funny point that actually can be serious especially for people playing live. My cat ate last week the power supply of my GT 1000 and it takes time to purchase a new one. So a very big plus to the Fender as you can find a "PC" cable much easier at any time and place.

Touch screens seem gimmicky to me. The depth and breadth of features within the Fractal ecosystem are unmatched. It's a very mature software, paired with a top notch software editor. The chassis and components are also rugged and roadworthy (IEC power anyone?). But with great power come a (somewhat) steep learning curve. People these days often can't be bothered to read a manual or commit any effort to learning a new piece of gear. That's ok too, it's never going to be a one size fits all solution. I would say that we live in a golden age of guitar gear, and that most products can be made to sound great. That said, I don't think you can necessarily deem something 'pro' based on sound alone. I can use a simple plugin in Reaper and sound great, and no one would know its not a 'real' amp... or tube... or hand wired... etc etc. The 'pro' qualities in a unit lie in its build quality, ruggedness, and feature set, not necessarily how easy it is to use. Pros will take the time to learn it, or have a tech that learns it. Besides, just because a unit like Fractal has several pages of amp parameters doesn't mean people need to dick with them. Just stick to the factory presets (which are awesome) until you learn.

I purchased the TMP and use it mostly at home. It's extremely simple to program the presets, you don't even need the manual, I play with it by sending music via Bluetooth and just concentrate on playing. The sounds are quite nice, especially the Fenders of course. We consider that the other Fractal and Neural type machines have been on the market for years now, so the TMP will certainly have future improvements (we hope!).

Fractal sink or swim with their units. For Fender their unit is just one of hundreds of products. Fender have a bad reputation of ignoring products that have problems or poor sales. They not only have dropped products quickly but offer poor support when they hadn't but zero support if the drop a product. Buyers could end up with a product that falls behind or prematurely is replaced and so is dropped. In short a product with very, very poor resale value.
The thing with all modellers is that they are just a computer that relies more on great software than anything else. Soon like the movie industry one will buy a military grade computer and a simple footswitch controller and not a specialized music computer like we have now. An industry standard will be agreed on and there will be endless choice of sounds as startup costs for software only companies negligible. It has to happen it is embarrassingly overdue. The modern recording industry uses consumer computers. The only argument about using standard computers is robustness. It is a nonstater with military grade units which are a hundred time more reliable than any gear made for Rock bands. Add to that they are not overly pricey nor do they become redutant quickly. The computing power required for modeling is not excessive.

    Great review as always!
The one that has seamless preset changes will be the one for me. Programmable FX units were designed for that in the first place, to change multiple fx at once. If there’s a silent gap when you change a preset or it’s slow, no matter how expensive or good it sounds, to me it’s a toy for home use or recording. The scenes and on/off fx thing is a bonus. My opinion.

Unlike some comments, I believe the Fractal complexity and UI is a positive and is it gives more freedom to effectively create your own amp. Similarly the fx are more like old lexicon/eventide rack units again a major positive for me. I do agree though that pricing in Europe and UK for Fractal is unacceptable.

I found the comparison of the dynamic range to me most revealing here. Listen to the way that notes decay on the two modelers compared to the amp. On the Fender TMP I hear a white noise like static sound come in as the notes decay. I don't hear that on the amp or on the FM3 model. It sounds like the noise gate on the Tone Master Pro is engaging too early and choking out the note decay.

Fractal sounds fantastic, but their user interface is way too complicated for me to use on an everyday basis, and the screen on the device is too small for me. Who could possibly need 300 amps?! It's impressive but surely three or four quality sounds is all anybody needs in reality?
Each to their own but that's obsessive stuff and probably more geared towards home players.
That many options is crippling, shouldn't we all be concentrating on playing music?

One more consideration could be: maybe one player does not need all those amps...but the unit should have a list of amps that should be ok for many different guitarists and each of them could have his own preferences and his own amp of choice...one guitarist may like a Marshall, another one a Fender, another one a VOX, etc etc....

@LeoGibsonGtr that's a fair point. But it's kinda comparable to TV these days, all these channels and nothing on! I remember the Mk4 Boogie coming out and then the Triaxis. People were overwhelmed and still are to this day by those products. Inevitably you ended up endlessly tweaking rather than playing music. A well known guitar player once said, gear is "music avoidance", I think there's a valuable lesson in there for all of us.

Thanks for this comparison! While I am nerdy, when it comes to making music, I don’t really want to dive into Fractal-level depths. I think the more limited options of the Tone Master Pro are part of what makes it attractive to me. In fact, I’m really going to be on the look out for even more limited (and more affordable) products in the Tone Master line. I do think the internal routing options of the TMP are unfortunate, though. Flexibility there wouldn’t really make it significantly more complex.

Brindo a Leo e al futuro user friendly e more rack based 👍🤟

Note that while Fractal does model the taper of most amp controls, they do not model the taper of the master volume and instead offer an idealized master volume taper. As such, simply setting the volume on an amp in the exact same spot as the model will yield different results.

Cliff Chase hates the way that most master volume controls on guitar amps have the majority of their usable range in the first 1/3 of the potentiometer so he prefers to model the amps with a linear master volume control. The amp set to max volume should behave the same as the model set to maximum volume.@@LeoGibsonGtr

The TMP is the iModeler. If you do not like to deep dive and have access to all the parameters of the Fractal systems then it is understandable that you would gravitate towards the easier option.. however... Just for example.. I can take a Hipower amp in the fractal, swap out the tone stack with a Marshall JTM45, adjust the Bias, the voltage, the sag and get an amp that is amazingly close to a real JTM45 in the room with all the touch and feel of a real amp. There really is no competition to Fractal in the actual physical modelling category.. That does not mean it is for everyone. Some people want to capture real amps... I hear the QC is amazing for that, some people want to turn it on and treat it like a real rig.. place your effects, choose an amp and play... but after learning enough about the Fractal units to use the UI quickly I would not want anything else. Get what inspires you and enjoy it today.

Sold my FM3 and got a TMP and no regrets!! Much better user interface face on the TMP. The FM3 may have the better sounding stock presets but a simple tweak to taste on the TMP and I get better tones than I did on my FM3! I always enjoyed my FM3 but the menu diving and formatting took time away from my playing. A lot of the features were great too but were almost overwhelming how many there were. The TMP is just the perfect amount of settings I feel to get the job done and ultimately enjoy playing! I got mine mostly for quiet play once the babies and wife are asleep! Love it!

I bougth some ua pedals. They sound great. But its limited. I mean. 1 preset per pedal. It doesnt satisfy me . I olay at home and want to play some cover songs. Been checken fm3 sounds and presets. They sounded really good. The fm9 can duel amp and duel cap. That lacks in the fm3. But i like to plug and play. So the fm3 is good for me i geuss. Its smaller and cheaper and fits on my desk. I can download some presets and play. I think you need to gros on modelers. When i had the helix i did not understand what everything was. Now 2 years further i understand it much more. I tried the headrush core. Presets where not my thing. You can buy presets ofcourse. But lacks a computer app. It has the practise mode. But dont know how often you would use that. I want pro sounds even tho i am not a good player. I found many yt channels for the fractal that show you how to make cover presets. In that way you learn how the app works. Hard to make decissions. But atm iam leaning to fractal. Since many pro player use it. If the fm9 was priced the same as in dollars i would choose that one.

Hey Leo! Great video as always. I have, probably like many who watched this video, watched dozens of videos on the TMP over the last month. Regardless of what the video presenter says about them, all of them have given me the same impression: the Fender and EVH models are outstanding, and the models named after non-Fender owned products are not. Mind you, I do not actually care if something is "authentic" - I don't have a Marshall Plexi or a Mesa Dual Rectifier sitting here, so what does it matter to me if it sounds exactly like a Marshall Plexi or a Mesa Dual Rectifier? I do care if I like the tone, though. I own a Fractal Axe FX, and I love the Marshall and Mesa tones it produces. When I hear TH-camrs demo Fender tones from the TMP they sound great, and when they demo other things they sound less great. It's as simple as that.
I think that Fender really just views the TMP as a modeler for people to buy into the Fender brand, and those other models are just numbers on a spreadsheet so that it doesn't look like they're selling an underpowered product. With a Deluxe Reverb, a Bassman, and an EVH you could already cover almost every tone you would ever realistically need in a cover band.
Have you tried the Tone Master FR-10 or FR-12 powered cabinet, though? As mentioned, I have an Axe FX, and also a Boss GT-1000 CORE for something easily portable. I bought a Tone Master FR-12 to use as a powered cabinet, and it is easily the best modeling tone upgrade I've purchased in years. I had been using a PA speaker, or plugging directly into my audio interface, and the FR-12 was like buying an entirely new set of amplifiers. Better bass response, better treble response, just better clarity across the entire frequency spectrum. My only complaint about the FR-12 is that it is shockingly, brutally loud. The manual claims that it has a maximum sound pressure of 130 db. 130 db! Who needs that kind of volume level?

Hi, thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video!!!

Of course, I respect your point of you, but as a Marshall lover myself...if I buy a 1900 euros modeller...I honestly expect to have something that sound like a Marshall...This Fender Marshal amps....are kind of "inspired" by the real deal.... As regards the FRFR speaker, unfortunately I have not tried the FR 12....I would really like to test them out...but I don't think Fender will ever send me anything to try ...ah ah ah...

FM9 Turbo has twice the DSP. FM9 reserves DSP for many CPU heavy blocks like Amp and Reverb so you can use two Amp blocks and ultra quality reverb with no increase to CPU meter. Ultra quality reverb eats a ton of CPU on the FM3.

HEADPHONE Out....HEADPHONE Out....HEADPHONE Out. Is anyone going to mention this? I will....I have the FM3 and the Tone Master Pro. I've got to max settings (or near max) on the TMP to hear it well with my headphones . Sounds OK with Beyerdynamic DT900 pro and not loud enough with Sennheiser HD650. FM3 sounds terrific with both....50% setting with Beyerdynamic and 75% with Sennheiser HD650. The TMP will go back. The FM3 stays and its much better appreciated!

The problem is that certain headphones will need an amplifier with this unit. I have cheaper headphones with low impedance that I hear well...but not near the quality of sound that should be expected. I'll need an amp to drive 300 ohm headphones using TMP, not on helix or fractal. And no, I'm not hard of hearing. I've used modelers for years since Fractal and Kemper products were introduced. @@NS-tc9kk

Nothing better than the real thing.

Real is still a lot more pleasing to listen to… maybe we need a breakthrough tech in modeling and not only the same algorithms from 10 years ago with little tweak there and there…
Amp capture with neural network give a better result but still lacks of the push.

You mentioned user manual... Fractal doesn't provide a hard copy of one.
They want you to down load it. 🤬

We have to save trees...😀 Anyway, here you can find a great source of info as regards Fractal amp list: wiki.fractalaudio.com/wiki/index.php?title=Amplifier_models_list
