I've owned a axe fx 3 for a few years now and it's an amazing peace of gear. I have gotten. Super into ML sound labs amped plugins lately but as a Helix, eleven rack and axe fx owner it's a great peace of gear but it's not the end all be all.
I started on an FM3 and now own a AXE FX III. I love the tones and flexibility of Fractal modelers. The more time I spend learning the hardware the more I fall in love with it. My advice for new owners is be patient and take your time learning new ways to dialing in guitar tone.
Nice way of expressing your experience with the FM9. I have used FAS for several decades now, yes I have tried all the others at one time or another but nothing ever compared to FAS gear. For what you get it's worth every penny imo. I'm no computer nerd and always found it to be fairly easy but if you want to deep dive everything is there for that. It's also nice to have Leon for any reference you may need, he's the best! I hope you enjoy it and create whatever you hear in your head, it's such an awesome modeler, nothing really comes close. Cheers!
Thanks so much! Really enjoying it myself and learning more and more about it as I go. And I hope to be giving back to the Fractal community with more and more content on my channel. Cheers!
Great honest review! I run an AxeFX111 Mk2 Turbo for studio use and I love all the deep dive stuff, but like you say the presets are great and you just tweak them to your personal preferences. I really enjoy the tweakability of the cabs block, as you can't do anything with a traditional cab in the room. I run mine through a Matrix GT1000 power amp and Matrix 2x12 FRFR cab for the live sound and it sounds awesome. Loved the video, keep them going🙂
With all of the Fractal units, it's wayy easier to dial them in using the desktop editor. For me, the only downside with the FM9 (compared to the AxeFx3)is that it doesn't come with the tonematch block....
I agree. I clearly showed the editor in this video but didn’t touch on that. In a studio setting the editor helps immensely. I guess they couldn’t put everything into the FM9.
As someone who owned the rack AxeFX III and downsized to the FM3, I would say that for most guitar players who think they need the FM9, the FM3 turbo is probably sufficient. Not only do you get essentially everything the FM9/rack unit has, you get a way more manageable footprint for your pedal board, around half the price, can easily expand the switching with midi or simple 2 button switches, still lots of processing power (vs my non turbo FM3). I was on the FM9 waiting list but after looking at the pedalboad layout thing on pedal playground's website, my Novo 28 board would have room for just 1 pedal to the side and that's it.. or go to an even bigger board. I didn't want to do either of those things. I think (myself included) we guitar players think we need more than we really do and I grabbed that rack unit and the 6 button controller because more is better. Well I only used like 1 or two amps and only a small hand full of effects and that's it. All the routing options were nice but after looking at the I/O of the FM3, I felt like it was sufficient for my routing needs and I was right. I lucked out by selling when there was a waiting list for all the fractal gear and was able to make a little profit from selling my rack unit and controller and after I got a lightly used FM3 for a little under $900 bucks shipped, I found my presets didn't even come close to eating up all the CPU and the I/O still facilitated running a vocal mic in and out to the board and a guitar in and out to the board and out to an FRFR behind me. I never ran any patches with blending multiple amps or cabinets or tons of ambient effects that are CPU hogs or anything like that. I play in a rock cover band and got by for nearly a decade with just a silver jubilee, wah and delay and a touch of chorus. Nice and simple. I programmed my Morningstar 6 button midi controller to control the FM3 so moving from the 6 button FC6 with the rack unit to the FM3 and the morningstar controller was a 1 to 1 change and I have 3 extra buttons on the FM3 I can use for whatever else and obviously those 2 extra pedal jacks for 4 more physical switches. I think the one main drawback to the FM3/Turbo is only being able to use 1 reverb block. I kinda got around that (With Leon's helpful video) by using the Plex delay block. Besides that, I think with the extra CPU power on the Turbo, the FM3 is an incredible bargain when you lay out the price and shortcomings of the competition.
This is a perfect example of finding the right gear for you. You should watch the video where I explained why I chose the FM9 after many recommended that an Axe FX was necessary for a studio application. It's linked in the end card of this video. I bought what I needed and not what people told me I needed. Glad it worked out great for you!
@@richo144 Technically in terms of not being able to use 2 at once. I like that you can still have 4 different amps on one preset and switch between them so it feels a lot less restrictive from that perspective.
Your comment resonates a lot with me. I’ve been wanting to jump onto the modeling wagon and see if it would work for me, especially since I recently started playing live. I spent a lot of time considering the FM9 vs. the FM3, and finally decided on the FM3 Mk II Turbo last December, for pretty much the reasons you mention: price, portability, sound quality equal to the bigger units, etc. That said, I still double guess my decision some times, mainly because of the amount of switches. The FM9 has all I will ever need and then some, but at double the size and at a much higher price. My sweet spot would be an FM5 😂. Or I need to get creative with the foot switches.
@@javiermp81 you can buy the FC6 and put the FM3 behind you on stage in its own little pelican type case or on a stool. For me, a 2 button switch on the side gives me 5 switches which is all I need. Having 2 switch jacks means I could add 2 more if I needed. Leon Todd has a video showing some custom 3D printed switches that are shaped exactly like the FM3 that you can use hook and loop tape or something like that to attach to the side of the unit. They’re pretty slick.
I play a lot in my manacle to my riffstation and iTunes music. Can you do that wy hooking up the way you have it in this video? Do a video on hooking it up thru the send/return in the back of your amp head and playing it thru your cab. My First modeler was a Kemper powered unit and it was playing right out of the gate while the Fractal was a way steeper learning curve.
I had a line 6 Helix floor unit for 5 years before I got this fractal fm9 turbo unit. I sold my helix after I was blown away with this unit. This unit is definitely a game changer and no regrets.
I am so happy I stuck with my Axe Fx 3. I basically had the same growing pains where a physical amp and pedal was simple to understand for my simple mind and the AF3 was rocket science. The presets were cool but not "me" so I struggled to make my own presets sound good. So many times I'd show up to my friends house and they begged me to just play my old Fender Deville with a big muff in front because it "sounded like I was playing from another room" on my AF3. It's been 2 years since that purchase and I'm still learning so much on this family of products. It feels great now to impress my friends that I go from a loud synth Tom Sawyer intro to a near perfect acoustic sound and finish them off with a downtuned 7 string tone to start playing Korn.
Love the video mate .....seriously same way I deal with things lol ......Looking to pick up FM3 after I had the Headrush ( Toy:)))) for few years then KEMPER for long time but still love the Tube Amps JCM800 SC i feel best about .....what model is that Gibson Semi Hollow you jamming ?
Thanks! I had so much fun with this one! That guitar is a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion III. I have a whole video on my channel about it that I did a few years ago. Great guitar!!
Great video and just what I needed to hear. Longtime Helix user that is getting ready to move over to the FM9, but scared of the learning curve. Going to give myself plenty of time to get used to it and keep my Helix a bit longer, before bringing out live.
Thank you! I have both the FM9 and the Helix now. Both have their merits. If you get the FM9 just do exactly as I did. Once you get over that first hump it's smooth sailing. It's a killer device...Good luck!
I have one on the way too. As I said in an earlier comment, I went through the learning curve with an FX8. It was hard, but really valuable, and the end result was more than worth it. Just take your time to take small bites and chew thoroughly. ;-)
@@emelle1283 More powerful and bettter Amps, Delays and Reverbs. I loved my Helix (Especially the ease of use and UI )and used it for over 7 years, but was ready for the next level. The Fm9 it truly a pro level piece of gear and addresses some of the shortcoming of the Helix . Just to clarify, you can get good tones out of the Helix, but it just takes a bit more work to get there. I wil lrevisti Line 6 when they come out with a new unit.
@@guitarplayer1969 Are these tone shortcomings on the Helix relative to Fractal possibly going to be bridged by firmware updates, or is it limited by electronic architecture?
I was thinking about grabbing one of these. My problem with modelers are that I do not like the cab sims. There are only a couple of speakers that I really enjoy hearing to my ear with my instrument and they are in my cab. So would this unit work well with a real cab? I use the Moorer GE300 now and I love it. The tube emulation it provides with amp models really make me enjoy using it. But as all of us guitarist do... Want more or missing something else we think we do not have in our current rig.
Glenn is a big help, isn't he? The forum is a huge help getting going, and even after you've been on it a while. Fractal support is also the real deal.
I've had my FM9 30 days now, and I'm going through all the same steps as you, the workflow was strange at first, Layouts were the hurdle for me, once I got a handle on that and the various bypass states of the blocks I was off to the races. For live use a couple of stand-in switches and a treadle and it's all I'll need.
Really great review and appreciate your more nuanced perspective. The fractal stuff is super powerful and with super powers, you get complexity and need to RTFM a bit more. Cheers mate!
I'm tossing around the idea of switching to the FM9 from my Helix floor. One of the reasons is the ability to use factory presets that weren't designed to "wow" us with all the crap that we can never use. I'm just not sure yet. I use a few amps on my unit but I'm not one of those who'll use a different amp for each song....I do have my go-to rigs. Great video and you just added fuel to the fire.
If you can plug a guitar in a few pedals in an amp and a cab you can use an axe fx easily. You need to use the editor on a computer. These are millions option in about every block but you don't have to touch them if it sound good.
Nice video - thanks! Fractal are the model of a great company - Product quality, support, and constant updates - Check, Check, Check. They have been consistent (for me) over the last 15 years or so. No complaints.
I just bought a used AFXIII MKII (currently marked "shipped" by Guitar Center). I currently own a Helix--it's the bomb, but curiosity has been killing me, so I had to check out the AFX for myself and see who wins. From all the demos, I'm not hearing much difference in quality of modeling 90% of the time, so it's going to come down to feel and features. I'll give a few good points I have perceived about the Fractal so far and a few for the Helix from owning one for 8 months or so: Helix: best front-end pedal selection, hands down...especially in the drive and modulation department (edit: after checking out the Fractal wiki, looks like the AxeFx III wins here). Price. Overall ease of use, particularly when using HX Edit. Dynamic room reverb--that reverb is EVERYTHING when making more realistic sounding patches. The mic input is mega important and should never be missed on any modeler. The floor version is I think the best-looking, best form-factor of any modeler available. If I'd kept the floor version, it's likely I'd never be interested in the Axe Fx. Line 6 keeps updating the firmware at a rate of every 6-8 months it seems... not exactly quick, but not slow either, and it amazes me a 10 year old device is still going strong; that says a LOT. Axe FX: CLEARLY geared towards my playing style with the selection of amps--lots of boutique high-gain options, while not at all lacking in the classic and clean department. All channels of each amp have been modeled, and there are multiple versions and iterations of certain amps. Deep parameter editing like impedence curves, tube types, etc. Pre/post eq and boost options in the same tabs as the amp block, eliminating the need for wasting a block on amps you know you prefer boosted anyways. Axe FX also seems to have better processing power and, judging by the forums, the firmware gets more involved and more frequent updates than the Helix.
Very interesting video, thanks. Would you please explain why you need higher than USB 2.0 speeds for audio when even 1.0 can do 24bit/96kHz and 2.0 is about 40 times faster?
Thank you and my pleasure. I edit video as well as produce music and sound. Drives are faster and faster and I want my interface to match the speed of the connections the computer has or there is a potential bottleneck. I do experience latency with some interfaces. I can't say conclusively it is the USB connection but my computer has Thunderbolt/USB 4 and I'd like to take advantage of that...
I don't own the fm9 but my axe fxIII as latency, depending on what is used I measure 1.5 ms to about 4 ms when using lots of effects multiple amps and cab at the same time. It's very low and will not bother most.
I went with the Helix LT. The presets sound very good and I was easily able to begin building my own presets with the intuitive interface. It's been an enjoyable experience and my guitar sounds better than it ever has through it. I think I prefer it to a modeler.
I've been thinking in buying an FM9 to combine it with my Grandmeister Deluxe 40, but i'm still unsure of the MIDI control that I will need to implement to still use de H&K presets... Great review as always
Thanks so much! I’m not really up on midi but it shouldn’t be too complicated. The main challenge is how you connect to the GM40 as you either need the controller. I used to use the desktop app but I’m not sure if that is still supported.
I've had similar problems with the helix. Took 36 videos (I was counting) before I got any bloody sound out of it... even then I cant get it to work properly as a USB recording device. Any recording I do comes out at -28db on average. I can whack in a boost but that colours the sound and adds processing power.
@@LonelyRocker Best helix videos I found were by Jason Sadites (as well as the line 6 stuff). Using the editor is a lot easier than the floor controls too imo
Yes, since I'm in a studio setting I almost always use the editors. I forgot to mention that in this video about the FM9 but sitting at a desk it's a no brainer using the editor to manipulate the device. 100%
Thanks! Ive been meaning to try it. I will get to it eventually. I have some ideas on a video for it. But I need to try it first. I will try and get to it soon!
I'm about to get a new Mac computer and I find it confusing how all the connections mean I have to buy new audio interfaces etc. You play great on all the machines.I love my Helix but ultimately an amp is needed to compare the tweaks ! I think the ' You get what you pay for' covers it.Line 6 has great updates though, so I have raised my repect for Helix gradually. Thanks
Thanks! You don't necessarily need a new interface. When I moved to my Mac Studio I went from Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 4. Thunderbolt 3 is the same connection as 4 but 2 is different. But I got adapters and continued to use my Thunderbolt 2 interface without issue. In the case of the Helix and the Fractal I got the USB 2.0 printer to USB-C adapter (USB-C is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports). What I did buy was a Thunderbolt 4 HUB that gives me a lot of extra USB and Thunderbolt Ports. But many of the devices are forward and backward compatible so it may not be necessary to buy new devices other than adapters. Good luck!
Check Valeton for the budget line, those are all using same chips and processors as the lien 6 helix or moer or joyo or anything in that range people buy a metal case but don't see the internal parts and processing stuff
I think you’re right about validation. I’ve seen it with Amps, but not like it is with modelers. Not sure why. I do believe there is no single (this is the best modeler). Just like everyone finds different amps to their liking, it is the same with modelers. Everyone’s ears are different. I’ve tried fractal a couple years ago and didn’t like the sounds, and hated the interface. I’ve played through many Helix products and found the sounds lackluster. Have very good playing friends who make it sound good. When the Quad Cortex came out, I thought I was crazy for buying it, knowing I wouldn’t like it. 2 years later I still own it. Gigged for a year with it, and have recorded with it, can’t imagine being without it. Go figure.
Great observations. For me, the routing and workflow options play a huge role in determining which modeler I like. As I have a channel I’ve now made it a point to have different devices and there are big workflow differences. Point being you really need to know what you need and want.
The "confusing" part of this particularly interested me. A few years ago, I acquired an FX8 when I was trying to sell an amp online and the interested party offered me the FX8 as an exchange. The reason they gave is that the FX8 was just way too complicated for them. Well, I came to understand what they meant. The first few days of playing around with it really messed with my head, but I just kept exploring the unit, and the manual, and after about two weeks I finally had it set up in a way that meets pretty much all I needed from it. And I have barely changed it since.... just because I haven't needed to. So yes, as you say, you do need to invest the time. But it's worth it. I now have an FM9 on the way and I'm really excited, this time, to be going through another, similar learning curve, because I know how rewarding it's going to be when I get there. :-)
You get to do it all again! Glad you persevered. Your experience with the FX8 will hopefully give you a good foundation. Definitely use fm9-edit. It makes it much easier. You’re in for a treat. Enjoy it!
Thanks so much!! Glad to have you here!! I did a video on how I make my drum tracks. I start with Logic Pro Dummer and then I do a lot of editing. Drummer has changed a bit since I made this video but the basic concepts are the same. You can see that here: th-cam.com/video/O6-aErrmswI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=q7LCmPJUqHqg-tm1
Good stuff, thanks! Can you clarify reamping? I use a Radial device out of my Daw now. Your description sounded like something else I would like to do which is use it like an ox stomp for my tube amps. Looks like you are doing that. Yes? Side note, thought I heard a little bit of another Canadian guitar hero in your playing. Are you a fan of Ian Crichton? Thanks again!
First off. saying my name anywhere in the same week as Ian Crichton is a HUGE honour! I wouldn't say that but thank you very much! Love Saga! Wicked band! As for Re-Amping, I did a whole video about that. Let em know if this helps you: th-cam.com/video/XnbKmYSEZQQ/w-d-xo.html
I was going to get the Quad Cortex but the power supply and the tons of people on various forums have complained about the QC having serious ground hum issues, I think fractal does modelling better and I have no use for the capture feature. I'm tempted to break out the credit card but thinking I should just save up for it, very hard to resist putting the FM9 on my credit card.... lord help me lol!
No pressure. DO IT! Haha. I’m really enjoying it. There is no harm in waiting. Fractal releases new hardware faster than the QC gets software updates 😂😂
I have the fm3. I still use the presets. I can take it easy with me to practise or friends. It can do much more than i need. In europe the prices are much higher. But i think its worth it
My friend has that one and loves it. Nice and portable and still sounds like a Fractal. If it meets your budget and does what you need then the price is right 😎🤘🏽🎸
Thanks so much! No regrets at all. The FM9 suits my setup perfectly. I’m getting a ton of use out of it. I really didn’t need the AxeFxIII and do t seem to be missing anything I may need. They updates were across the board and gapless switching was added to the FM9 too so I didn’t miss out. Been very happy with my purchase.
Love that guitar. It makes a lot of appearances on my channel and I did a whole video about it a few years ago. It’s still up if you can find it. Cheers!
So you could just plug in the FM9 then go into the appollo Twin interface so you would get a HiZ input and a mic input with phantom power? Would this be a good way to set it up?!?
Not sure that would be ideal. If the apollo had a s/pdif input that would work great and you wouldn't have to use any of the ports on the apollo...which doesn't have many. But it doesn't as far as I know. You could take the outputs of the FM9 and go into the apollo but that would consume the only two inputs (aside from the instrument input). Your guitar would still plug into the FM9. I think your best bet is to have them both hooked up via USB/Thunderbolt (whichever one you have) And just switch interfaces in your software as you require.
I wish that there was a way to try and buy Fractal gear before buying. I tried Kemper and disliked the interface. HX Stomp works great so far but would love to upgrade and try something better.
Unfortunately Fractal is direct or through specified distributors. They have built a strong reputation that customers just trust the products. I took that leap when I bought mine. While not perfect it does everything I need it to do very well.
just checked, it does. So you can go from spdif out to the spdif in of your audio interface, that's instant and digital, the from your audio interface you probably already have thunderbolt to computer
Yes, I have already looked into that. I like the direct monitoring from the FM9 though. And I hate the routing software on my Thunderbolt Focusrite interface. So it’s one or the other it seems.
@@LonelyRocker You can still direct monitor by setting output two to copy output one in settings (or direct to both in preset) but if the audio interface software is not good then might be better off just using the usb
Yes, that's the problem...but I'm enjoying having the FM9 working directly as the interface for all of the things I'm doing here. For the odd voiceover I can still go through another device. And I actually have a mic preamp here too so I could route that into the FM9 as well...good to have options :)
I had a fractal ultra back in the day, but they just kept on pushing out new hardware and I jumped over to the helix. It’s been great great video by the way very entertaining.
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it. Sadly, the Apple model has conditioned us to feel like we always need the newest version of a device. I stopped trying to keep up with my iPhone. And I’m now happy to keep using my modeler as long as it still works for me. I have a Helix here too. More content coming about that one too soon!
I don't know where in the world you are but in the US and Canada you buy it right from Fractal's website. G66 handles the UK. And specific distributors sell it to different markets around the world. Best to start at their website and see who sells it to your country...good luck!
The FM9 just felt like the right option for me. I already capture with TONEX so I didn't need that feature on the QC and I love the routing and effects on the Fractal. But I'm up to trying a QC sometime in the near future. Maybe we can make that happen :)
I want one so bad. I don't need one though, nor is it currently in the budget lol. I have the Helix Floor and Tonex pedal, so I really shouldn't be GASing for anything, honestly. But, I'll keep it at the top of my wishlist haha 😅
Great overview! I’d love to know how it performs running it 4CM into a high gain amp. This is what I’m most interested in using it for. More specifically I’d like to know what the noise floor is like with high gain. I’m planning to run it 4CM through a mesa JP2C. Thanks for the great content.
Thanks so much! glad you enjoyed it! I can definitely put that on my list. I currently have it set up for re-amping through a load box using a balanced line from the load and one humbuster cable and it's super quiet. That's probably the next video I will tackle...appreciate you checking in!
"What do you mean, we have to go out? I just got my new thing" Yea, that made me laugh hard. My main studio rig is an Axe FX III Mk 2. I do use a Hx Stomp for the tiny gigs I do. I'm also incorporating a Tonex. as well At one time, I had Axe FX, Kemper, Helix and lesser modellers. I streamed down to just the Axe for quite awhile, until I needed to play out again. I did sell off a bunch of generic FX pedals, and Amps after getting it. Kept some special amps.
@@LonelyRocker Yep, wait for days checking the tracking, read up on it, watch vids a 3rd time you watched before getting it (to settle any cognitive dissonance on the money spent), then it gets there, and work, or family stuff.
A very simple question: Is that a Warwick bass you're playing..?? Couldn't get a good look at the headstock. VERY informative video... but in all honesty, still doesn't help make up my mind..!! LOL
USB 2.0 interface on the FM9 is not the source of any latency you are experiencing. The audio for the FM9 is 24bit, 48kHz - 8 channels (4 stereo pairs) is just shy of 1 Mbps - double that for inputs and outputs - add in more headroom for MIDI over USB and FM9Edit control. Let's say 4Mbps total thru put. That's less than 1% of USB 2.0 data thru put of 480 Mbps...
I have had an Axefx3 for 4 years....best thing you can do for your playing experience is get or build a couple Celestion F12-X200 loaded cabs coupled with a decent stereo rack amp. Just do it and thank me later.
Ha! Sounds awesome. And I'm sure it would blow me away. I do have 2 4x10 Marshall cabs here plus a bunch of real amps but everything I do is recorded DI these days. But I will try it sometime!
@@LonelyRocker - Haha, yep. As good as the FM9T tones are, it’s really splitting hairs. Big win to the FM9T for outstanding factory presets, takes a lot more effort to get tones a that level with the Helix. However a big win for the Helix for ease of use, using the HX stuff is just so damn simple.
Good tips. I bought one but sold it. Loved the tones- hated that UI. Why didn't you just get the Axw-FX III MkII Turbo? It is a more capable unit that could have worked better for you and especially for studio work. You sound like you really know your stuff! Nice man cave!
Thanks so much for your thoughts! Sorry it didn't work out for you. Takes a little more commitment to get into it but once you do there is so much goodness in there. I did another video that explains why I chose this one over others, including the Axe FX...you can check it here: th-cam.com/video/u1pHtvRSLrc/w-d-xo.html
I have hundreds of effects between all my pedals. Usually just use a nice undertrack sound. Then a nice gnarly lead tone. So basically use two effects. Spend your time and energy on practice. THE TONE COMES FROM YOUR FINGERS AND SOUL
Still prefer my high-end pedals (The Duellist, Golden Reverb, Immerse, Flashback Triple Delay, Trio+, RC500 Looper, etc.) Very easy to click an effect on or off. In reality, most of us will always have ~2-3 pedals always on. Then based on the tune, we can quickly stomp on 2-3 pedals, to get very close to the tone that is needed. If you need more then that you are too focused on gadgets and probably don't play very well. The best musicans sound great unplugged with an acoustic guitar. I saw Chris Cornell play and incredible 2 hours set this way. Also, having an external looper also makes life much easier. I have two- the RC500 and the Trio+ (+ means Looper addded in v2.) I had the FM9. It was nice and all but a PIA mostly to make any changes and to access stuff. They need to update the UI like yesterday. It has most the goodness inside- still better then anything Line6 but if you can't access things easily, it has less value to me. I am not saying modelers have no value. Having ready to go patches can be convenient when playing sets. I do like the Set List feature as well. If the UI was better I might add one to the party. I would prefer it also to be a bit smaller form factor and even more powerful...like a FM6, not FM3.
What's amazing is the choices we have today. I still love the real thing...amps and pedals will always be here as long as I'm doing this. But I found a great hybrid solution that works really well in my studio. And I do think modelers can make players lazy. It all has its place if used effectively...in my opinion ;)
@@LonelyRocker True. I have an ultimate set up. Had a $1,845 FM9. Sounded great but annoying to make changes. With pedals you step on it and it's there. WIth modelers you have to deep menu dive- not that into doing that. I just want to play. My tone is just as good for the most part. Modelers don't really make lazy players IMO. The training course for the complex FM9 is 14 hours/$99. They are simply different. If you require consistent tone and want set lists, etc., modelers do have their place I suppose. In the meantime, I am very happy with my pedalboard and 5 amps including a hand-wired tube amp. I agree- they all have their place and it is good to have options.
I got a Kemper five years ago. I got an Axe-fx III 18 months ago. I haven't used the Kemper since. The Axe-edit software takes only a short while get the hang of and is absolutely excellent so the unit's native interface is irrelevant. As Lonely Rocker says, you can get as complex as you like with a fractal device but you don't need to. You can find any number of usable factory presets out of the box and after watching a couple of Axe-edit tutorials you can easily start creating your own patches which is made even easier by fractal Including sensible default initial settings for each amp model and effect. Then you discover that you can save preset layout templates and also individual blocks (block = one amp, cab or effect) in your own library for immediate recall in any other preset. At which point you are pretty much off to the races as far as developing your sound is concerned.
For some reason I never had an interest in the Kemper. It really came down to fractal and Line 6. I now have both. I forgot to mention the editor in this video...even though I clearly showed it a few times...doh!! I realized that after I uploaded it. But yes, that makes everything so much easier. Especially in a studio setting, its the best way to use it.
Look up what RME says about USB 2.0. It's super reliable, the form factor is very secure, and can handle WAY more tracks than you would ever need. There are also issues with some thunderbolt devices as well. Would be a cool video perhaps.
That’s a great point. And I totally get that. Newer versions of Thunderbolt went smaller to accommodate smaller devices but sadly that is not the best for pro machines. However the round trip latency is so much better. Wish we could have the best of both worlds.
Great review, I have enjoyed this video. I do have the Fractal FM9 Turbo too since last year (was on the waiting list). Your opinion does match mine. I will be looking forward for more of your video's (for sure about the FM9). That's I have subscribed to your channel. I have learned a lot too from Leon Tod, Cooper Carter but also Rosh Roslin. I want an fm9 even more now. I never believe people saying anything is "too complicated". Look fractal gives you the most colored crayons for your art. Straight up.
Great video. Your “reenactments” remind me of why I pretty much stick to pedals. Granted, I play bass, so it’s not quite apples to apples, but in my opinion, life’s too short to menu dive.
i don't like it when guitar players wait like sardines or iphone users for the next update. check out the rick beato/kirk hammet interview when kirk talks about moving to fractal on live shows it looks like he is going to cry.

I've owned a axe fx 3 for a few years now and it's an amazing peace of gear. I have gotten. Super into ML sound labs amped plugins lately but as a Helix, eleven rack and axe fx owner it's a great peace of gear but it's not the end all be all.
Also the axe fx 3 like the helix rack have mic inputs. Fm9 is technically the less powerful unit. But it has so much more the. The axe 3.

Thank you much!! And glad you enjoyed that bit ;-)
I started on an FM3 and now own a AXE FX III. I love the tones and flexibility of Fractal modelers. The more time I spend learning the hardware the more I fall in love with it. My advice for new owners is be patient and take your time learning new ways to dialing in guitar tone.
Great advice! It is such a treasure trove of goodness. The time investment is worth it.
Cheers!
I would really like to thank you for taking the time to post such a helpful overview. Best wishes from Albany Western Australia
Oh. My absolute pleasure. So glad you enjoyed this. Cheers from Canada!
Thanks so much!!! Your setup sounds awesome...more content coming!!
You seem like a really likeable guy and I enjoyed this quite a bit. You've earned a follow, sir!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words and the follow! Cheers and welcome!!!
Really? 😢
Does Fm3 has a tone match block?
And just one amp block too
@@richo144 Technically in terms of not being able to use 2 at once.
Great video! Just saw Big Wreck too, back in December. Love those guys.
Thanks! Yeah awesome band. I saw the show in Hamilton because I was away when they hit Toronto. Awesome show for sure!
I went from Helix to Kemper to Boss GX-100 and now I really like my Fractal FM9. Very happy with it!
Quite the journey!! Enjoy it!
Great unit for sure. I have both here now and they each have their advantages but you definitely can get it all done with the FM9.
why is it better?
line 6 amps and overdrive sound shit, no feel and crazy thing is my boss gt 1 is way better than them.
Thanks a lot for this video. I’m getting my FM9 tomorrow, so this was great for “validation”.
Awesome! Enjoy it! Be patient with it. It will give you a ton of joy if you do. Cheers!
Excellent review, thanks! Truly helpful
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much!
Wonderful video as always!
Thanks so much my friend!
I went from Helix floor to FM9 and never looked back. Love the Fractal!

Just take your time to take small bites and chew thoroughly. ;-)
Why move from Helix?
I use this with real amps. I run the amp into the loop. You could run this with a power amp into your cab. Lots of players do it that way.
You have to try it. There is cab mode called dynacab and it's very good. I tried a uad pedal and to my ears the fractal was better.
Thanks for the information I been looking almost for ever on getting a new pro-preamp and you just very accurate.

Glenn is a big help, isn't he? The forum is a huge help getting going, and even after you've been on it a while. Fractal support is also the real deal.
Absolutely. One example of a great community. Glad to be a part of it now :)
Nice! It's just time...once you get over the hump it suddenly seems so easy and you look back wondering what all the struggles were about ;)
Really great review and appreciate your more nuanced perspective. The fractal stuff is super powerful and with super powers, you get complexity and need to RTFM a bit more. Cheers mate!
Thanks so much!! Really appreciate your thought. Thank you 😎🎸🤟🏼
I'm tossing around the idea of switching to the FM9 from my Helix floor.
Thanks!! Glad I gave you a few things to think about.
Agreed! Great gear! Support it great too.
Love your video's and respect your opinions.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that, thank you!
I'll give a few good points I have perceived about the Fractal so far and a few for the Helix from owning one for 8 months or so:
Helix: best front-end pedal selection, hands down...especially in the drive and modulation department (edit: after checking out the Fractal wiki, looks like the AxeFx III wins here).
My second guitar ever was a black HR Fusion like that. The best of the best!
Sweeeeeeeet!!!
Awesome! I have a Helix here too and I love it. LT is a great device...enjoy it!

We all have our own schedule. I got a Helix here recently too. Perhaps I will add to your video count. :)
@@LonelyRocker Best helix videos I found were by Jason Sadites (as well as the line 6 stuff). Using the editor is a lot easier than the floor controls too imo

Good luck!
That first preset/tone at 3:20 of the video was massive!!!! I would buy it just to get that tone haha. What preset was that?
Man I forgot about that!! Ahhh!! I don't remember which one it was...I was just searching at that time :))))
Check Valeton for the budget line, those are all using same chips and processors as the lien 6 helix or moer or joyo or anything in that range people buy a metal case but don't see the internal parts and processing stuff
I'll have to try that out if I can get my hands on one...
Enjoy it!

Instead of the usb I use spdif into my actual audio interface, way less latency. I'm using axe fx though, not sure if fm9 has spdif out
just checked, it does.
For your use case, wouldn't the AXEIII be a better fit?
I addressed that in a video where I explained why I chose the FM9...you can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/u1pHtvRSLrc/w-d-xo.html
How do you buy a fractal from them ?? All I see is used on reverb
I don't know where in the world you are but in the US and Canada you buy it right from Fractal's website. G66 handles the UK. And specific distributors sell it to different markets around the world. Best to start at their website and see who sells it to your country...good luck!
Why not QC over FM9 did you consider the option?
The FM9 just felt like the right option for me. I already capture with TONEX so I didn't need that feature on the QC and I love the routing and effects on the Fractal. But I'm up to trying a QC sometime in the near future. Maybe we can make that happen :)
Where did the sound go?.....watching Leon Todd videos... everytime I have a problem I go right to Leon's channel, so accurate!
See!! Real talk on this channel! :)))))). Thanks for watching!
I want one so bad. I don't need one though, nor is it currently in the budget lol. I have the Helix Floor and Tonex pedal, so I really shouldn't be GASing for anything, honestly. But, I'll keep it at the top of my wishlist haha 😅
Not to fear my friend. I have the Helix and the TONEX pedal here and I plan to feature them together. Stay tuned for that!!
👍🏼 I’ll watch for that one!
Awesome channel !!! Also the way you speak sounds like Neil Peart!!!!
Thanks so much! Not sure if I sound like Neil but I love me some Rush anyway I can get it 😎

Thank you so much! So awesome to have you here!
Great video!! 👏👏👏
Thank you stranger 😎🎸🤟🏼
Loved the skit lol. Awesome insight!
Thanks so much! I had fun with that. Glad you enjoyed it.
Is that not the biggest bummer ever when that happens?????! :))))))))
@@LonelyRocker Yep, wait for days checking the tracking, read up on it, watch vids a 3rd time you watched before getting it (to settle any cognitive dissonance on the money spent), then it gets there, and work, or family stuff.
It truly is a hot mess of distractions! ;-)
Are you running the FM9 through studio monitors? Is that advisable?
Absolutely....when recording it's the best way to monitor it. It's also an audio interface....
@@LonelyRocker thank you! I want one of these units.
My pleasure! It’s a great device!!
A very simple question: Is that a Warwick bass you're playing..?? Couldn't get a good look at the headstock. VERY informative video... but in all honesty, still doesn't help make up my mind..!! LOL
It’s actually a Jackson believe it or not….
I don'y know...I've tested it when re-amping and I've had to make adjustments. Nothing conclusive yet but I'll touch on this one I know more...
Helix also have a little latency while reamping :)
I bought a Helix Floor in 2015 and an FM9T in 2023.. sent one back.
I'm guessing you couldn't send the Helix back because the return window closed 8 years ago ;)
I'm working on a Helix video as we speak :) Maybe you'll catch it when it comes out :)
Is that a firefly racer in the back
If you meant Westcreek Racer I’d say you have a great eye! Full video on that guitar on my channel 😎🎸🤘🏽
@@LonelyRocker yeah thats the one. I appreciate you and your videos my friend keep em comin.
Thank you so much!! So appreciated by me :)
@@LonelyRocker Thanks!
Fx 3 also got build in tonematching and ir capture, big win for Studio Guy
I have hundreds of effects between all my pedals. Usually just use a nice undertrack sound. Then a nice gnarly lead tone. So basically use two effects. Spend your time and energy on practice. THE TONE COMES FROM YOUR FINGERS AND SOUL
I actually don't disagree...I'm just guilty of liking toys too :)
I have two- the RC500 and the Trio+ (+ means Looper addded in v2.)
I had the FM9.
Thanks for reminding me, again, why modelers are so discouraging.
Boy, you're really down on modelers ;)
And the Fractal Forum is phenomenal.
Thanks so much. Glad to have you here! And thanks for saying my name in the company of some great TH-camrs. I need to earn my stripes but I'm working hard to put out the best content I can!
Helix isn’t pro level?
Of course it is...I have one also...love it....
Excellent

are you sure professionals like to spend time on digging deep into sounds....? thanks for the vid
It depends on what you define as professional 😂😂. My pleasure!
@@LonelyRocker Oh i never use that word you used it, for me it has no sens take for instance Eric Clapton or keith Richrds they play like crap amateurs and make more money that average pros so....

He’s got a great channel! And he’s a great player too.
Carter Cooper Master Class
Maybe he will let me review his class :)
I love it , but prefer the amps in tone x
I LOVE TONEX. I have covered that a lot on my channel. TONEX is still a part of what I do here. I’m in the process of building a tone model pack for my ENGL. Great system!
I want an fm9 even more now. I never believe people saying anything is "too complicated".
Look fractal gives you the most colored crayons for your art. Straight up.
It's been a ton of fun. Not perfect but once you get over that hump it's loaded with so much goodness.
No it is complicated trust me I have one.
The hardware interface is complicated. The software is not. In fact, it transforms the entire user experience.
@@BkBk-gy6vr it isn't TOO complicated.
Great video. Your “reenactments” remind me of why I pretty much stick to pedals. Granted, I play bass, so it’s not quite apples to apples, but in my opinion, life’s too short to menu dive.
Thank you! I got some great bass tones with that thing! Getting past the deep dive reveals some really juicy things. But I love pedals too!! :)
I see the turbo is making a comeback i remember everything in the late 80s and 90s had a turbo in there somewhere.
Ha!! Good observation...it's like the base model is good but the Turbo is one better ;)
i don't like it when guitar players wait like sardines or iphone users for the next update.
check out the rick beato/kirk hammet interview when kirk talks about moving to fractal on live shows it looks like he is going to cry.
the iPhone analogy is bang on...it creates anxiety about gear that doesn't need to be there...If it's working for you it's the right piece of gear. That was a great interview...
Well, that was my journey into fractal too. hahahaha great video
Thanks!! Had to share our pain!! ;)
When you order a fractal in Europe you get a t shirt and a box of chocolates🎉 love my fm9.
Damn...I ordered direct and didn't get any of that!! ;)
Anyone ever tell you, you look like Neil Peart, your voice over even sounded like Neil's Necromancer voice
😂😂😂. One or two have actually said that. All my years of listening to Rush has morphed me into a bad copy of one of them 😂😂😂
