      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. A great time to be in the market for the Spin 714. Info I've seen says availability in the UK from May.... sounds 'ambitious' to me based on the fact it's the 29th today 😂... but let's see! Expect pricing starting around £799. I'd expect the big sellers like Currys to stock it. I'm hoping to have my hands on one as soon as I can to show in the channel.

      Hi again David, not sure if you use X/Twitter or follow me there, but I've just posted an update on availability and pricing for some of these new Chromebook models. In the UK the Aver Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is showing as "coming August 2024" and prices starting at £799.

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, thank you. There's no way to upgrade a standard Chromebook to become a Chromebook Plus, you'd have to buy one branded as Chromebook Plus. There's a slightly odd exception to explain, where some Chromebooks sold before Chromebook Plus existed, have received the Chromebook Plus software update IF their hardware met the criteria list an they were approved (this includes at least a 12th Gen Core processor or equivalent, 8GB RAM or more, 128GB storage or more, a FHD webcam or better, a FHD IPS display or better and at least 128GB storage). For example, Chromebooks like the Acer Vero 514 I reviewed here: th-cam.com/video/wIgEcbcbqlo/w-d-xo.html
      That said, as I show in this video (2:42), anyone can access Gemini through their browser now and you can get some of the Google AI benefits like 'Help Me Write' in Gmail and Google Docs by subscribing to the Google AI plan, which you may get a 2 month free trial for.

    I purchased a Lenovo Chromebook Plus, which is great. However, I question Google's decision to insist on Intel or equivalent processors, when everyone else, Apple and now Microsoft, seems to be moving towards ARM processors. This is the first Chromebook I have used that needed a fan for cooling. Any thoughts on this choice by Google ?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think we'll see more of a change with more Snapdragon based Chromebooks in the future or maybe one day the shift for Google to go 'in house' will come. Do you have the Intel Core I3-N305? I don't find the fan use too excessive which is one bonus. There are also of course non Chromebook Plus models with the MT8186 of recent (3 I've shown on the channel) which for lighter users are pretty decent on general browsing and battery life. For what Google want to achieve on device with Chromebook Plus though I think for where we are right now defaulting to Intel has been the only option and worked out pretty well on the whole.

    • @marksanderson1707
      @marksanderson1707 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have the Core I3 model. I find it quite fast and lets me edit videos in Power Director at 4K whereas my other Chromebooks struggle even at 720p. Having a better screen and back lit keyboard are worth the upgrade to Chromebook Plus alone. My main objective is to put together a budget live streaming set up with a video switcher, small audio mixer, 3 cameras and a presentation laptop. Chromebooks let me do this without taking a £1000 Windows laptop or MacBook with me.

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @marksanderson1707 that's a pretty impressive use of Chromebooks/ChromeOS and as you say far more economical than the main alternatives!

      I have a Lenovo Flex myself with the i3-1215u. The fan does not start that often, so its kind of ok for me :) But there have been Chromebooks running arm for a long time, its just that they use the cheapest ARM cpu's that would not even be considered fast in a mobile phone. I guess we will see snapdragon x models coming in the future.

  • @AndrewTSq
    @AndrewTSq 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Gemini in my chromebook plus was kind of underwhelming.. it shows a prompt about generating pictures.. I write the same.. get the answer that it can not do that right now, but its learning... ok, writing with the AI feels like talking to a software program, and you get answer x.. and you ask why is that so? and you get answer x again!?. I also asked "is gemini integrated into chromebooks now?" and got the answer "Yes, BARD is now a part of chromebooks" :D

      Might be worth seeing how that new HP x360 14B Chromebook Plus I show looks. The tablet UI in ChromeOS still isn't as good as Android, but depends on what and how much you plan to do with it really. I think an Android phone and ~14 inch convertible Chromebook would be a pretty decent combo for most. Use the phone for most apps but the Chromebook screen for watching media more and of course the Chromebook in 'regular' use for productivity, so much easier with full desktop websites when you need them.

      Hi - well we already have Chromebox models - they'd just have to tweak the Chromebook Plus criteria a bit (as can't really say a device MUST have a FHD IPS screen if it doesn't have a screen at all 😂)......so in theory maybe, but I imagine it's not where the focus is right now. Is considering a Chromebook that you run through a dock 99% of the time, but have the option to use in laptop form factor when you want to, maybe the way to go or not what you're after?

      They're trying to differentiate the Chromebook Plus models more. Don't forget, as I show you can of course access Gemini (and if you pay for it) Gemini Advanced through your browser on a regular Chromebook, so not much difference from the Progressive Web App approach on the Chromebook Plus. You just won't get the integrated AI features.

      @@tdog2605 Hi, yup - that's really useful to know, thank you. I think it's worth you looking for a 'Chromebook Plus' model for Uni. It means it'll meet a minimum spec of hardware requirements (like a Intel 12th Gen Core i3 equivalent or newer, 8GB RAM min., 128GB storage min. etc). You'll also get the software benefits that come with it, like the AI bits I cover in this video. For 14 inch Chromebook Plus models take a look and see what you think of:
      * Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook Plus: th-cam.com/video/DN8IGSkhMV4/w-d-xo.html
      * ASUS CX34 Chromebook Plus: th-cam.com/video/O6w07enZFw4/w-d-xo.html
      Both options are non-touch I'm afraid (the Lenovo does have an option, but it's rare in the UK). If you check my Twitter/X I'm often posting deals there too, mainly on these as like-new refurbs from large ebay sellers when they have a voucher running, see my video here on how you'll be able to save when buying: th-cam.com/video/BMKaVNvh-hA/w-d-xo.html The Lenovo I mention often comes up under two hundred pounds, sometimes for the option with a backlit keyboard and 256gb storage (the version I show in my video is 128GB without the backlit keyboard).
      If you were looking to spend a bit more and get a touch-screen Chromebook Plus model, as I mention in this video there's a new Acer Spin (so convertible too) 714 due out soon, I've since posted to X/Twitter and we have a date of August for it with an expected starting price of around eight hundred pounds. However, there are two older generations of this Chromebook, that have both received the Chromebook Plus update. I'm currently trying out the 2022 model and hope to publish my video on it later this week, so could be one to check on the second hand/refurb market.

      @@MergeDroid thank you for asking! I actually went with the first gen asus flip in the end, my old chromebook broke and I kinda needed one urgently, and Currys only had limited chromebooks with a touchscreen (3 to be precise - 1 being a 15.6 inch lenovo, and the other 2 being the asus, and then the acer - which my dad was against be getting for some reason #acerhaterorwhat - so I don't think I would have left the shop with one unless i bought the asus flip one) Apologies i went against your recommendations, I was going to wait for the new acer spin, so i could #treatmyself and be happy that i finished a year at uni, but it when i tell you, it creaked in a horrible way every time i opened it, and both sides were falling apart, I had it all taped up, to secure it, and it still managed to fall apart more! But if i have to invest in another one, I will certainly go for the acer spin, I am rather happy with the asus however, IT CAME WITH A STYLUS AND I AM NOW A HUGE ACADEMIC WEAPON!!! but then again i was happy with anything as long as it had the functions i knew well, thank you for your recommendations though!! there wasn't many regular chromebooks in the currys i went to either, so i wasn't exactly spoiled for choice, and yeah I could have probably bought one online and got it delivered, but i always had problems doing that so i was apprehensive, sorry I rambled on a bit there, but yeah, I will deffo keep your recommendations in my head for later!!!!

      @MergeDroid  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, the battle between ChatGPT and Gemini over the coming months (and years!) will be interesting to see!
      Chromebook Plus models have to meet a minimum hardware spec inc., at that MINIMUM level: Core i3 12th Gen or equivalent, full HD IPS screen, FHD webcam, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage. This hardware then enables a lot of the extra features that are exclusive to them, like the AI features and other Chromebook Plus exclusive ones I cover in this video.
