I've been neglecting wearing my CPAP for a while. I've decided to do the responsible thing and take better care of myself. This video had great information and was very insightful.....much appreciated.
I don't know what people are experiencing regarding mold and mildew with their cpaps. I run my cpap each day after sleep use for about 20 minutes. I do this with the hose attached to ensure it is dry inside the tube. I do this even though I don't dial my humidifier up so high as to experience any 'rain-out' when sleeping. Anyway, I've used cpap for 10 years+ and I wash my tube out once a month in my utility sink. I did buy a long cpap 'bottle-type' brush on Amazon for about $10. After I squirt a drop of Dawn soap inside one end of the hose and run some water inside of it, I insert the brush from both ends, carefully going halfway down the 6' tube, back and forth gently a few times. Then I rinse out the tube thoroughly and hang it 'horseshoe style' over my shower door for a while (15 mins or so). Finally, I attach the hose (without mask attached) back up to the machine and without the humidifier operating, allow the machine to again blow for another 20 minutes or so until the hose is completely dry inside. Done! Fresh! Never an infection or a problem.
My pulmonary Dr. suggested using mouthwash to clean the tubing. I've been using this method and it leaves a clean fresh scent along with disinfecting. So far so good.
Hello thank you for your comment. It is not really recommended to use that method of cleaning. However purchasing a CPAP cleaning device or Immersing the tubing in warm soapy water for 15 minutes then letting air dry would work.
Please follow this advice! I invested in a professional Soclean sanitizer, instead of cleaning myself. I now have chronic sinusitis that causes a chronic cough. I have had two sinus surgeries. I never had a sinus infection until I started using a cpap. Now I use a dental device for my sleep apnea and it works great!
Thank you for all the options. After trying different methods, using the long brush with unscented foaming hand soap works best for me and wiping with the mask wipes. I rotate 3-4 hoses so I'm not cleaning all the time. I had to trim the length of the bristles since they were getting stuck in the tube. The ozone from my SoClean leaves a "formaldehyde"-like smell, so I reverted to the 'ole soap and water. If the humidity is on the higher side (like in Florida), I don't need to fill the tank with water - less germs will grow there. If you wake up coughing, you may need a better method.
I've been using a small amount of Clorox in my pre-wash soaking liquid for over a decade. I have never had any issues. My face cushions have lasted well over a year each, though I do rotate at least five at a time, so I always have fresh ones to change regularly.
I've been neglecting to take care of washing my CPAP it seems like a chore to me I appreciate the video on the risks. I did want to ask is there a list on check sheet that I might be able to print off to explains the parts to clean and how often, like the mask, tubing, headgear, filters ECT. CPAP Cleaning FAQ A: The machine should be wiped off once a week with a soft cloth, wipe inside the humidifier, too, check the filter area for extra dust and remove. Replace disposable filter m Wash water chamber weekly Wash tubing weekly Wipe down mask daily Replace chambers and tubing every 6 - 12 mos Some advise differently but this is what the manufacturer recommends. .
Hey, thanks for the video. How on earth do you dry out the tubing after you clean it? You hang it up to dry in the morning and it's still got water droplets inside it when you need to use it at night.
Hello, If there is still water inside the tubing when you go to use it at night we would suggest running the CPAP without any water in the water reservoir for a few minutes until it is dry.
Thank you for this, I'm trying to determine if those cleaning machines are necessary. Additional advice: If you don't clean your tube you get an odor. Not just in CPAP.
@@Sleeplayground That's my wonder, I have cold house so use hose wrap, it's kinda a pain to remove daily. Can't make up my mind. I know my self and it needs to be simple and quick.
Different sites tell you different things. I read that you should not use any kind of dishwashing liquid for cleaning (I was guilty of this). I bought the Purdoux off of Amazon and that seems to work well. He showed the orange bottle, I bought the green ones. Tube brushes are highly recommended, and I also just bought a cpap hose dryer, which blows air through the hose. It says it takes 5-10 minutes...I'll see how it goes.

@@shaunrussell4558 If you have an air mattress with an air blower that blows it up, that's all the tube dryer is. After I bought mine, I realized this. If you have one you'll save about $50.
I use disinfecting wipes and a tool called “long fingers”( a couple of dollars) and run the wipe back and forth through the length of the hose. Works really good and I’d less messy than soapy water.
Hello. I have not been using the machine because I needed to research how to clean the tubing, etc. This was helpful. If I left the tubing on after not using for two weeks-- can bacteria get into the device itself from the tubing? Also leaving the tubing off for days at at time, can this be a hazard for dust getting into the machine itself?
Hello, Yes if you left the tubing on for 2 weeks without cleaning it bacteria can get into the machine. There is also a chance that leaving the tubing unplugged can gather dust inside the machine so make sure to place the machine away from direct sunlight and take a microfiber cloth to dust it off.
Do I need to remove the heated tubing from connector daily? Or just remove once a week for the cleansing? Was curious if not disconnecting it maybe moisture built up more in the tubing?
The problem we found with washing the tubing was the drying of the tubing. Here in the UK (and other 'damper parts of the world') you can't just leave the tubing to dry. I doesn't! I use an ozoniser tubing cleaner.
Understood! Yeah I also would suggest connecting the tubing after you have hung to dry to machine and let the machine run to help dry. Also, though it is a little funny. As I advise in my current video on cleaning maybe go outside and lasso the tubing just to try and get as much of the water out as possible. Let me know if that helps at all. Appreciate the comment!
@@Sleeplayground Hi. tried both of those and the machine switches off after a few mins if no 'back pressure'. Even after 'swinging it around, it is still very wet inside. Going to try and make a blower for it using a hair drier but on cold.
I was told to only use the NuWave system to sanitize the CPAP mask and hose. They told me so clean use will damage the unit and void warranties I was told this will sanitize everything. Then another tech said no you need to use soap.I have the ResMed 11. Now I’m told to clean the hose and mask and water tank. The NuWave Ozone sanitizer cleans everything, so I still have to keep washing the hose with soap. I bought a brush but it is terrible to try to get through the hose. Who do I believe.
Yes, I understand it can get confusing. They actually state that it "MAY" cause damage or void the warranty using the machines. Yes along with the sanitizing units, it is recommended to clean the tubing and chamber water chamber once a week if able, as they sanitize once again they do not wash the products.
My tube is also heater with wiring incorporated in tube. The electrical connector is a permanent part of tube. Do I just make sure no liquid gets on it.
I have this hose too and I don't get that end wet but I have soapy water in my bathtub and I put the other end in this water and swish it back and forth. I do the same with clear water to rinse .

Hello Moonee Ponds, Keeping the equipment cleaned (Hose, Tubing and Chamber) routinely, is key to keep the inside of the machine clean. You can wipe down the outside of the machine with a very lightly damp cloth or dry preferred. But it is not recommend to clean the inside of the machine or to try to open machine at all to do so. Hi, very informative video! Let me get things right: Should I disconnect the tubing every day and let it air dry from the overnight built up moisture? What can I use to avoid that dust enter my machine while the tube is unplugged? Am I supposed to clean the pipe fully only once a week or every day? Hi, Thanks for reaching out! No you do not need to disconnect the tubing to let air dry daily. But you can and is so plug up the hole with a cloth perhaps. You have the filters that catch the dust where the intake of the air comes in. If you would like more you can try the hypoallergenic filters. I use really hot water and Dawn dish detergent. I have plugs for each end of the tube that let it soak. I rinse the tube and water tank ever other day. My mask everyday. And soak everything once a week. I have a tube brush that I bought on Amazon. Along with a hanger and the plugs for soaking. But now I have a heated tube and wondering how I can clean it without damaging the heating plug because it doesn't seem to disconnect.
Unless you want your brain eaten by naeglerii fowleri with 100% fatality rate. That said, you can use purified bottled water in a pinch. It has minerals that stop algae from forming as well. Do not use R/O water as it, like tap water, is not safe. I have had algae with R/O water from water stores that dispense from a spigot. My experience has been with water in my countertop ice maker.
Thank you for answering this question. Is it safe to user rubber gloves to clean mask and tube? Are they toxic? The reason I asked was because I use Press on or Gel Nails and I am afraid that the glue or chemicals may be toxic to the wash water for the Cpap equipment. I thought I would use rubber gloves just to be safe.
No need to clean if you follow these rules: use ResMed N20 nose piece only w/o humidification, if alternate humidification tank is used (external or with O2 equipment only) place unused distilled water tank in refrigerator when not in active use. In 2 years I've not had any mold, bacteria, dirt, etc. I hated cleaning so much I did what I could to minimize it, but did full cleaning the first few months. However, the smaller short 4" tubing to/from the N20 DOES need cleaning as your breath exhales out of one end of it through the myriad of holes. If using supplemental O2, connect the tubing adapter not to the CPAP hose connector of the machine, but to the N20 short hose for O2 injection at your face. Any hose with *heated* humidified air needs to be cleaned. If simply running cooled bypass, no tank cleaning needed unless water turns cloudy or not refrigerated. The water in the tank(s), if not refrigerated, will get cloudy and eventually go bad, need to be dumped, and changed. If your breath exhales through any tubing, through distant holes, that part will need to be cleaned. Some exit right in front of the mask and others a distance away.

I was told by the lady who gave me my machine, not to immerse my tubing because it is the heated tubing she said it will tare it up. I understand if course to dry it good after cleaning but I was told not to immerse
Thanks for asking Vicki, These recommendations are according to Resmed. I have recommended the same for years and never had an issue with any taring of tubing. Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source. Disconnect the air tubing/hose from your mask and CPAP machine. In a sink or tub, rinse the inside and outside of the air tubing with mild soap and warm, drinking-quality water. Avoid using stronger cleaning products, including dish detergents, as they may damage the air tubing or leave harmful residue. Rinse again thoroughly with warm, drinking-quality water. Place the air tubing on a flat surface, on top of a towel, to dry. Avoid placing in direct sunlight.

Hi Thank you so much for reaching out! I always tell patient to try to get in a routine. Like in my latest video on cleaning and maintenance. Once a week wash the Tubing and the Water chamber. Warm mild dish soap preferably in a tub, sink or bin of some sort bucket. They recommend warm drinking water if able. I would also just for habit check on the filters the same day.
Technically the tubing is authorized to be changed every 3 months per insurance. If you keep clean it can last longer. I would say if your tubing is over 6 months I would definitely change for sanitary purposes.
My new heated resmed hose stinks of chemicals! I cleaned with soap then vinegar and hooked it directly to my sink and ran it for 30 min flush still stinks!
Make sure to let it soak for 10-15 minutes in a warm soapy water solution to see if that can help. Sometimes you have to do this multiple times to help get rid of the smell.
I get a new one from the VA 2x per year. The tubing needs to soak in a water/vinegar solution (dunk it in clean sink). You can soak and rinse with tap water (assuming you don't have really nasty tap). Very important: rinse AGAIN with distilled water. I keep a gallon dedicated to this and then pour it back in with a funnel after rinsing. Do this for all parts to prevent calcium scaling from ruining your reservoir. I then use a can of air to blow out most of the water droplets and let air dry. For the tube, I hang mine on the wall in a well ventilated area all day. You should be cleaning all parts in the morning so they are dry by the time you go to bed. All this is a pain in the ass, but if you don't clean it AT LEAST once a week, it degrades the performance and starts to stink. If you don't clean it for a few weeks (or longer) expect to experience some of the health problems in this video. In addition to OSA, I also have Asthma so I try to do all of this 2-3 times a week. They also sell wipes marketed for cpap equipment that I use every morning on the mask assembly parts. Once you get a routine going with this, cleaning will only take about 5 minutes.
@@Sleeplayground I’ve used mint scented tea tree shampoo to clean my tubing for years…no bad smells ever. I take the tubing into the shower, put a generous “drop” of the shampoo is into the tubing, put my finger over the electrical connection. Fill it up with water. Hold each end and Raise my hands up and down…Swishing the water back and forth inside the tubing. Rinse thoroughly then hang it to dry. FYI…tea tree is also an anti fungal.
And the ozon cleaning machines have been known to break down the insulating foam inside of the CPAP. Making the CPAP break down earlier than it should.
I have the virtue clean air sense 2.0 ozone cleaner I use it every week to clean my pillows, mask tube, and chamber, I recently realized that when I squeeze the tubes it sounds sticky is that normal?
I’d suggest you to search more about this as there are two reliable channels that disapprove using ozone cleaner. The resmed forum also disapproves of this method of cleaning.
Hi, I'm new to using a cpap machine. I washed the tube for the first time today. I hung the tube to dry but there's still droplets of water in the tube. How do I remove the droplets?
Sure but this is only for the patients that use the humidifier on the machine. If you don't use the humidifier then it's not necessary to do that for the reason that it's dry air coming out of the machine only.
There is no real need to use rubber gloves. Dish soap or hand soap are a couple of safe options. Simply fill a sink with warm water while adding in enough soap to make it bubbly. Run the warm, soapy water through the hose, so it can effectively clean all the peaks and valleys of the tubing.

Well is you are using distilled water at least once a week if not more. Even with using a sanitizer machine. If you are using any other water please clean immediately.

I just found your channel today. I've learned a lot about cleaning my machine that was never explained to me in the 15 years I've been using CPAP machines. In fact I've changed suppliers twice because of bad information, setting up machines so I couldn't access info, failure to give necessary info, failure to keep appointments (they weren't in the office for scheduled appointments and never notified me) etc. In fact I took my machine in once because it wasn't working properly and they had it for a week. They wouldn't even supply a machine I could use while they had my machine. I have obstructive sleep apnia. I think that's what they called it. In all this time they have failed to answer my questions about cleaning the tube and the machine. At one point I had to figure out how to access the clinical menu because I needed changes made that they refused to make and after that I refused to take the machine in to them. They got very upset with me. Now I set the machine so it works best for me not for them. Since I reset the machine mask leaks are almost non existent and events per hour have dropped significantly from over 40 to 4 to 6 per hour. The tube you showed here is just a regular tube. I use a heated tube. My question here is "do you clean a heated tube the same way as the regular tube?" Needless to say I've never cleaned any tube I've used. Not even the regular tubes when I used them because when I asked I was told not to worry about them. The tubes didn't need to be cleaned. I disagreed with them but then what the heck. What do I know? Do you have a video on cleaning the heated tubes? If so could you share the link. I would really appreciate it. I thought my tube was in excellent condition. However, I just held it up to a light and it looks disgusting on the inside. Now I'm very concerned about using it. I have an old tube that isn't heated. For now I'm going to clean it and if it will work on AirSense 10 Elite, I'll use it until I know how to clean the heated tube. If it won't work on this machine I have an old Resmed Escape that works excellent so I'll use it if possible. All my equipment is ResMed. After watching a bunch of your videos, I got really ticked off at the people where I get my supplies from and contacted the one I deal with now. I guess some of the problem was me. They had no idea that I had never been told and shown how to care for the machine and equipment because I had never bothered to ask. When I started going to them for equipment, because I had been using a CPAP for so long they thought that all this stuff had been explained to me. She apologized to me and gave me an appointment for Friday afternoon to go over all the info to clean and maintain my equipment. She was very upset that I had never been given any of this info. She was very sincere as well. She had me come in that day and pick up a brush set for cleaning the tube (at no charge) and explained how to clean the tube and use the brush. The appointment is to go over all the rest of the info that I haven't been given. She told me to expect to be there for a couple of hours. I guess there's a lot more to learn. She also asked for the URL for your channel so she could have a look see. She called me back Monday and told me that your channel was extremely informative with excellent info. She did tell me to be very careful with info others have put in the comments. She specifically named one but I don't want to start a war in here so I won't mention which one. LOL She was also upset because one of the places sold me a Fisher-Price unit...I mean Fisher-Paskal (or what ever it is called). It burnt out within about 8 months and the seller refused to either replace it or send it in for repairs. Apparently is isn't a very good company to deal with and the equipment is sub-par.. I'm not going to go on and on about this. The horror stories I could tell you would blow your mind. That's why I appreciate your videos. It got me asking questions. I did get the tube cleaned with vinegar and water. The crap that came out of it was scary. Lumps and chunks of black stuff and white stuff. I soaked and brushed the tube for 2 days to be sure there was no more crap inside. 4 gallons of vinegar and a lot of water before I felt good about the cleanliness of the tube. Again, I thank you very much for the videos and the response. I'll let you know how things go on Friday but I expect I'll have gained a lot more knowledge. Take care and be safe.
Ok. But how do you actually get the hoses separated to be able to wash them? And of course the one that attached to the machine looks like it has electronic attachment so is it ok to get that wet, or is it supposed to be removed? If so, how??
Yes, Thanks for reaching out! If you are speaking of how to separate the tubing that comes from mask and the tubing that comes from machine to the mask. If you grab the hard plastic from the mask connection and the rubber tubing connector from the hose and bend like your breaking or wiggle back and forth they will come apart. It is absolutely safe to immerse or wet the electrical component on the tubing just dry well before connecting back up.
For cleaning the cushions on the mask you can wipe with unscented baby wipe no alcohol. For the actual mask frame you can use the soapy water, you can clean the headgear in the washer.
Hi, Thanks for reaching out. So I am unclear what you meant about the machine fittings> There should be one end that connects to the machine and the other that connects to the mask. You would separate the tubing take off the machine and disconnect from mask, by bending the rubber and the hard plastic. Water chamber you would pull out of the machine by wiggling if needed. and the mask cushion.

I have found that the rubbery end of my tubing fits right on the bathroom faucet! Works great for rinsing the tubing. Just have to latch it on to the faucet and run super hot water for a little bit to get all the sudsy water out. This would be after I soak it a bit in the soapy water. Problem I have is how to dry the inside of the tubing? It still has water droplets in it after hanging all day?
That's a great idea what you mentioned! I always advise patient's and I know it sounds funny. But after you let dry hanging over railing or shower curtain rod, you can swing outside like a lasso, LOL told ya its funny. But should get out most excess water out. You are not gonna get completely dry that's ok.
I clean tubing religiously. And swing tubing around like a lasso and also hang in shower after that.. it doesn't dry inside. So many droplets of water remain. What is a more effective method to get tubing dry?
@@billie381I dry my tubing with my CPAP machine. Insert the tubing as usual and turn the machine on! Make sure to keep the water reservoir empty when doing this. It takes about 15 minutes. (I let my hose hang to dry all day then completely dry with the machine
Hi Kevin, You can wash the tubing in a sink with warm water and mild dish detergent. It will not effect the heating mechanism. Just make sure to dry well before you connect.
Thanks for reaching out! Your not going to get 100% dry so yes you can use with little wetness if still not dry. Maybe even attach to machine and let the machine run and get the water out. Out as I say in my recent videos go outside and swing around to try to get as much as able out. But your not going to get all out!
Just one quibble. Neither the UV nor ozone devices clean the CPAP components. All they do is, at best, kill most of the viruses and bacteria. Both also attack the plastics over time - although that may not be much of a problem if you replace the plastic parts as recommended by the manufacturer. However, I don't recall any manufacturer recommending cleaning their machine components with anything except a mild soap like Dawn (tm) or diluted white vinegar.
I'm finding that I need to clean my tube every day or it smells funny. My biggest problem is getting the tube dry. It is very long. I hang it on my curtain rod right over the heating vent, but some parts are still not getting dry. What suggestions do you have for me? This is very frustrating and never happened before I got this new tube. Also how long do I soak the tube in vinegar? and how long to I soak all the supplies in soapy water!
Yes, thanks for reaching out! I would suggest a couple things. I know it is funny, but you may want to stand outside and swing the tubing around to try to get more water out. You can also hook up tubing t and turn on to see if it can dry tubing more. You will always have a little water left so do not drive yourself crazy. Try to make sure also you are using distilled in the chamber as well.
@@Sleeplayground We have been swinging the tube and using distilled water in the chamber. Can we hang the tube outside in the sun? It has warming coils in it.
Save momey and just use free & clear dish soap. Also, those fancy “cleaning” machines only disinfect but don’t actual clean. They’re overkill. You will still need to clean the tubes and parts with soap and water anyway.

If I end up getting one of these ozone or uv light cleaners, how often do I still have to clean the tubbing and mask with soap and water? I figured those machines would make me not have to but now I'm not sure
Please please clean your cpap machine. I neglected cleaning mine and got really sick. Didn't need to be hospitalized but had to have steroids and really strong intravenous antibiotics

After I squirt a drop of Dawn soap inside one end of the hose and run some water inside of it, I insert the brush from both ends, carefully going halfway down the 6' tube, back and forth gently a few times. Then I rinse out the tube thoroughly and hang it 'horseshoe style' over my shower door for a while (15 mins or so). Finally, I attach the hose (without mask attached) back up to the machine and without the humidifier operating, allow the machine to again blow for another 20 minutes or so until the hose is completely dry inside. Done! Fresh! Never an infection or a problem.

My pulmonary Dr. suggested using mouthwash to clean the tubing. I've been using this method and it leaves a clean fresh scent along with disinfecting. So far so good.
Hello thank you for your comment. It is not really recommended to use that method of cleaning. However purchasing a CPAP cleaning device or Immersing the tubing in warm soapy water for 15 minutes then letting air dry would work.

Please follow this advice! I invested in a professional Soclean sanitizer, instead of cleaning myself. I now have chronic sinusitis that causes a chronic cough. I have had two sinus surgeries. I never had a sinus infection until I started using a cpap. Now I use a dental device for my sleep apnea and it works great!

To dry my tubing face mask etc I re connect everything back to my machine than turn on “mask fit” and let it blow for about a 30-45 min

Thank you for all the options. After trying different methods, using the long brush with unscented foaming hand soap works best for me and wiping with the mask wipes. I rotate 3-4 hoses so I'm not cleaning all the time. I had to trim the length of the bristles since they were getting stuck in the tube. The ozone from my SoClean leaves a "formaldehyde"-like smell, so I reverted to the 'ole soap and water. If the humidity is on the higher side (like in Florida), I don't need to fill the tank with water - less germs will grow there. If you wake up coughing, you may need a better method.

I've been using a small amount of Clorox in my pre-wash soaking liquid for over a decade. I have never had any issues. My face cushions have lasted well over a year each, though I do rotate at least five at a time, so I always have fresh ones to change regularly.

Different sites tell you different things. I read that you should not use any kind of dishwashing liquid for cleaning (I was guilty of this). I bought the Purdoux off of Amazon and that seems to work well. He showed the orange bottle, I bought the green ones. Tube brushes are highly recommended, and I also just bought a cpap hose dryer, which blows air through the hose. It says it takes 5-10 minutes...I'll see how it goes.

I use disinfecting wipes and a tool called “long fingers”( a couple of dollars) and run the wipe back and forth through the length of the hose. Works really good and I’d less messy than soapy water.

Hello. I have not been using the machine because I needed to research how to clean the tubing, etc. This was helpful. If I left the tubing on after not using for two weeks-- can bacteria get into the device itself from the tubing? Also leaving the tubing off for days at at time, can this be a hazard for dust getting into the machine itself?

Yes if you left the tubing on for 2 weeks without cleaning it bacteria can get into the machine. There is also a chance that leaving the tubing unplugged can gather dust inside the machine so make sure to place the machine away from direct sunlight and take a microfiber cloth to dust it off.
I like alcohol for the tubing and rinse it extremely well.

The problem we found with washing the tubing was the drying of the tubing. Here in the UK (and other 'damper parts of the world') you can't just leave the tubing to dry. I doesn't! I use an ozoniser tubing cleaner.
Understood! Yeah I also would suggest connecting the tubing after you have hung to dry to machine and let the machine run to help dry. Also, though it is a little funny. I was told to only use the NuWave system to sanitize the CPAP mask and hose. They told me so clean use will damage the unit and void warranties I was told this will sanitize everything. Then another tech said no you need to use soap.I have the ResMed 11. Now I’m told to clean the hose and mask and water tank. The NuWave Ozone sanitizer cleans everything, so I still have to keep washing the hose with soap. I bought a brush but it is terrible to try to get through the hose. Who do I believe.
Yes, I understand it can get confusing. They actually state that it "MAY" cause damage or void the warranty using the machines. Yes along with the sanitizing units, it is recommended to clean the tubing and chamber water chamber once a week if able, as they sanitize once again they do not wash the products.

Not needed but they do help, if you are able to obtain.
I dilute the soap before putting it in the tubing. I'm more confident that it is thoroughly rinsed that way.

My tube is also heater with wiring incorporated in tube. The electrical connector is a permanent part of tube. Do I just make sure no liquid gets on it.

Keeping the equipment cleaned (Hose, Tubing and Chamber) routinely, is key to keep the inside of the machine clean. You can wipe down the outside of the machine with a very lightly damp cloth or dry preferred. But it is not recommend to clean the inside of the machine or to try to open machine at all to do so. Thanks for reaching out! No you do not need to disconnect the tubing to let air dry daily. But you can and is so plug up the hole with a cloth perhaps. You have the filters that catch the dust where the intake of the air comes in. If you would like more you can try the hypoallergenic filters. You would clean the water chamber and tubing/pipe once a week and check filter to make it routine. I have attached a video I did recently on cleaning.

I use really hot water and Dawn dish detergent. I have plugs for each end of the tube that let it soak. I rinse the tube and water tank ever other day. My mask everyday. And soak everything once a week. I have a tube brush that I bought on Amazon. Along with a hanger and the plugs for soaking. But now I have a heated tube and wondering how I can clean it without damaging the heating plug because it doesn't seem to disconnect.

Unless you want your brain eaten by naeglerii fowleri with 100% fatality rate. That said, you can use purified bottled water in a pinch. It has minerals that stop algae from forming as well. Do not use R/O water as it, like tap water, is not safe. I have had algae with R/O water from water stores that dispense from a spigot. My experience has been with water in my countertop ice maker.

The reason I asked was because I use Press on or Gel Nails and I am afraid that the glue or chemicals may be toxic to the wash water for the Cpap equipment. No need to clean if you follow these rules: use ResMed N20 nose piece only w/o humidification, if alternate humidification tank is used (external or with O2 equipment only) place unused distilled water tank in refrigerator when not in active use. In 2 years I've not had any mold, bacteria, dirt, etc. I hated cleaning so much I did what I could to minimize it, but did full cleaning the first few months.
However, the smaller short 4" tubing to/from the N20 DOES need cleaning as your breath exhales out of one end of it through the myriad of holes. If using supplemental O2, connect the tubing adapter not to the CPAP hose connector of the machine, but to the N20 short hose for O2 injection at your face. Any hose with *heated* humidified air needs to be cleaned. If simply running cooled bypass, no tank cleaning needed unless water turns cloudy or not refrigerated. The water in the tank(s), if not refrigerated, will get cloudy and eventually go bad, need to be dumped, and changed. If your breath exhales through any tubing, through distant holes, that part will need to be cleaned. Some exit right in front of the mask and others a distance away.

I was told by the lady who gave me my machine, not to immerse my tubing because it is the heated tubing she said it will tare it up. I understand if course to dry it good after cleaning but I was told not to immerse

These recommendations are according to Resmed. I have recommended the same for years and never had an issue with any taring of tubing.
Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source.
Disconnect the air tubing/hose from your mask and CPAP machine.
In a sink or tub, rinse the inside and outside of the air tubing with mild soap and warm, drinking-quality water. Avoid using stronger cleaning products, including dish detergents, as they may damage the air tubing or leave harmful residue.
Rinse again thoroughly with warm, drinking-quality water.
Place the air tubing on a flat surface, on top of a towel, to dry. Avoid placing in direct sunlight.

Thank you so much for reaching out! I always tell patient to try to get in a routine. Like in my latest video on cleaning and maintenance. Once a week wash the Tubing and the Water chamber. Warm mild dish soap preferably in a tub, sink or bin of some sort bucket. They recommend warm drinking water if able. I would also just for habit check on the filters the same day.

If your tubing has little wrinkles on it is it time to replace it?
Technically the tubing is authorized to be changed every 3 months per insurance. If you keep clean it can last longer. I would say if your tubing is over 6 months I would definitely change for sanitary purposes.
My new heated resmed hose stinks of chemicals! I cleaned with soap then vinegar and hooked it directly to my sink and ran it for 30 min flush still stinks!
Make sure to let it soak for 10-15 minutes in a warm soapy water solution to see if that can help. Sometimes you have to do this multiple times to help get rid of the smell.
The new one will have the same problem.
I get a new one from the VA 2x per year. The tubing needs to soak in a water/vinegar solution (dunk it in clean sink). You can soak and rinse with tap water (assuming you don't have really nasty tap).
Very important: rinse AGAIN with distilled water. I keep a gallon dedicated to this and then pour it back in with a funnel after rinsing. Do this for all parts to prevent calcium scaling from ruining your reservoir.
I then use a can of air to blow out most of the water droplets and let air dry. For the tube, I hang mine on the wall in a well ventilated area all day. You should be cleaning all parts in the morning so they are dry by the time you go to bed.
All this is a pain in the ass, but if you don't clean it AT LEAST once a week, it degrades the performance and starts to stink. If you don't clean it for a few weeks (or longer) expect to experience some of the health problems in this video. In addition to OSA, I also have Asthma so I try to do all of this 2-3 times a week. They also sell wipes marketed for cpap equipment that I use every morning on the mask assembly parts. Once you get a routine going with this, cleaning will only take about 5 minutes.
@@Sleeplayground I’ve used mint scented tea tree shampoo to clean my tubing for years…no bad smells ever. I take the tubing into the shower, put a generous “drop” of the shampoo is into the tubing, put my finger over the electrical connection. Fill it up with water. Hold each end and Raise my hands up and down…Swishing the water back and forth inside the tubing. Rinse thoroughly then hang it to dry. FYI…tea tree is also an anti fungal.

We recommend using the pre-wash solution if you're going to use an ozone cleaner as ozone tends to leave a strong odor on its own
And the ozon cleaning machines have been known to break down the insulating foam inside of the CPAP. Making the CPAP break down earlier than it should.
I have the virtue clean air sense 2.0 ozone cleaner I use it every week to clean my pillows, mask tube, and chamber, I recently realized that when I squeeze the tubes it sounds sticky is that normal?
I’d suggest you to search more about this as there are two reliable channels that disapprove using ozone cleaner. The resmed forum also disapproves of this method of cleaning.

Sure but this is only for the patients that use the humidifier on the machine. If you don't use the humidifier then it's not necessary to do that for the reason that it's dry air coming out of the machine only.

There is no real need to use rubber gloves. Dish soap or hand soap are a couple of safe options. Simply fill a sink with warm water while adding in enough soap to make it bubbly. Run the warm, soapy water through the hose, so it can effectively clean all the peaks and valleys of the tubing.

I just found your channel today. I've learned a lot about cleaning my machine that was never explained to me in the 15 years I've been using CPAP machines. In fact I've changed suppliers twice because of bad information, setting up machines so I couldn't access info, failure to give necessary info, failure to keep appointments (they weren't in the office for scheduled appointments and never notified me) etc. In fact I took my machine in once because it wasn't working properly and they had it for a week. They wouldn't even supply a machine I could use while they had my machine. I have obstructive sleep apnia. I think that's what they called it. In all this time they have failed to answer my questions about cleaning the tube and the machine.
At one point I had to figure out how to access the clinical menu because I needed changes made that they refused to make and after that I refused to take the machine in to them. They got very upset with me. Now I set the machine so it works best for me not for them. Since I reset the machine mask leaks are almost non existent and events per hour have dropped significantly from over 40 to 4 to 6 per hour.
The tube you showed here is just a regular tube. I use a heated tube. My question here is "do you clean a heated tube the same way as the regular tube?" Needless to say I've never cleaned any tube I've used. Not even the regular tubes when I used them because when I asked I was told not to worry about them. The tubes didn't need to be cleaned. I disagreed with them but then what the heck. What do I know?

However, I just held it up to a light and it looks disgusting on the inside. Now I'm very concerned about using it. I have an old tube that isn't heated. For now I'm going to clean it and if it will work on AirSense 10 Elite, I'll use it until I know how to clean the heated tube. If it won't work on this machine I have an old Resmed Escape that works excellent so I'll use it if possible. All my equipment is ResMed.

After watching a bunch of your videos, I got really ticked off at the people where I get my supplies from and contacted the one I deal with now. I guess some of the problem was me. They had no idea that I had never been told and shown how to care for the machine and equipment because I had never bothered to ask. When I started going to them for equipment, because I had been using a CPAP for so long they thought that all this stuff had been explained to me. She apologized to me and gave me an appointment for Friday afternoon to go over all the info to clean and maintain my equipment. She was very upset that I had never been given any of this info. She was very sincere as well. She had me come in that day and pick up a brush set for cleaning the tube (at no charge) and explained how to clean the tube and use the brush. The appointment is to go over all the rest of the info that I haven't been given. She told me to expect to be there for a couple of hours. I guess there's a lot more to learn. She was also upset because one of the places sold me a Fisher-Price unit...I mean Fisher-Paskal (or what ever it is called). It burnt out within about 8 months and the seller refused to either replace it or send it in for repairs. Apparently is isn't a very good company to deal with and the equipment is sub-par..
I'm not going to go on and on about this. The horror stories I could tell you would blow your mind. That's why I appreciate your videos. It got me asking questions. I did get the tube cleaned with vinegar and water. The crap that came out of it was scary. Lumps and chunks of black stuff and white stuff. I soaked and brushed the tube for 2 days to be sure there was no more crap inside. 4 gallons of vinegar and a lot of water before I felt good about the cleanliness of the tube.
Again, I thank you very much for the videos and the response. I'll let you know how things go on Friday but I expect I'll have gained a lot more knowledge.

Ok. But how do you actually get the hoses separated to be able to wash them? And of course the one that attached to the machine looks like it has electronic attachment so is it ok to get that wet, or is it supposed to be removed? If so, how??
Yes, Thanks for reaching out! If you are speaking of how to separate the tubing that comes from mask and the tubing that comes from machine to the mask. If you grab the hard plastic from the mask connection and the rubber tubing connector from the hose and bend like your breaking or wiggle back and forth they will come apart. It is absolutely safe to immerse or wet the electrical component on the tubing just dry well before connecting back up.
Can I use Ajax dish detergent
I mean if it is dish detergent soap, I do not see why not. It should be ammonia-free mild detergent.

You can wash the heated tubing the same. In a sink with warm soapy water, just dry the tube and end of it well.
Also can I use the dawn dish soap for the mask clening? And humidifier?
For cleaning the cushions on the mask you can wipe with unscented baby wipe no alcohol. For the actual mask frame you can use the soapy water, you can clean the headgear in the washer.

Thanks for reaching out. So I am unclear what you meant about the machine fittings> There should be one end that connects to the machine and the other that connects to the mask. You would separate the tubing take off the machine and disconnect from mask, by bending the rubber and the hard plastic. Water chamber you would pull out of the machine by wiggling if needed. and the mask cushion.

I have found that the rubbery end of my tubing fits right on the bathroom faucet! Works great for rinsing the tubing. Just have to latch it on to the faucet and run super hot water for a little bit to get all the sudsy water out. This would be after I soak it a bit in the soapy water. Problem I have is how to dry the inside of the tubing? It still has water droplets in it after hanging all day?
That's a great idea what you mentioned! I always advise patient's and I know it sounds funny. But after you let dry hanging over railing or shower curtain rod, you can swing outside like a lasso, LOL told ya its funny. But should get out most excess water out. You are not gonna get completely dry that's ok.
I clean tubing religiously. And swing tubing around like a lasso and also hang in shower after that.. it doesn't dry inside. So many droplets of water remain. What is a more effective method to get tubing dry?
I turn the humidity level to zero and let it run for a little bit. It dries it up in about 20 minutes.
@@billie381I dry my tubing with my CPAP machine. Insert the tubing as usual and turn the machine on! Make sure to keep the water reservoir empty when doing this. It takes about 15 minutes. (I let my hose hang to dry all day then completely dry with the machine
How do clean heated CPAP tubing

You can wash the tubing in a sink with warm water and mild dish detergent. It will not effect the heating mechanism. Just make sure to dry well before you connect.

Thanks for reaching out! Your not going to get 100% dry so yes you can use with little wetness if still not dry. Maybe even attach to machine and let the machine run and get the water out. Out as I say in my recent videos go outside and swing around to try to get as much as able out. But your not going to get all out!

It can be done daily but I know most people like to clean it weekly. Daily can be time-consuming to some.

Just one quibble. Neither the UV nor ozone devices clean the CPAP components. All they do is, at best, kill most of the viruses and bacteria.
Both also attack the plastics over time - although that may not be much of a problem if you replace the plastic parts as recommended by the manufacturer. However, I don't recall any manufacturer recommending cleaning their machine components with anything except a mild soap like Dawn (tm) or diluted white vinegar.

I'm finding that I need to clean my tube every day or it smells funny. My biggest problem is getting the tube dry. It is very long. I hang it on my curtain rod right over the heating vent, but some parts are still not getting dry. What suggestions do you have for me? This is very frustrating and never happened before I got this new tube.

Yes, thanks for reaching out! I would suggest a couple things. I know it is funny, but you may want to stand outside and swing the tubing around to try to get more water out. You can also hook up tubing t and turn on to see if it can dry tubing more. You will always have a little water left so do not drive yourself crazy. Try to make sure also you are using distilled in the chamber as well.

Save momey and just use free & clear dish soap. Also, those fancy “cleaning” machines only disinfect but don’t actual clean. They’re overkill. You will still need to clean the tubes and parts with soap and water anyway.
I have always notified my patients of the same. Even using the sanitizing machines you should still clean. Thank you for sharing!

Before putting the item into the cleaning device they should be wiped down with a wet wipe to make sure there is no stuck-on dirt or dust.
It is recommended to wipe down the mask, tubing and water chamber with an unscented wipe to remove stuck-on dirt or dust

You need an adapter that has a nipple for ur green oxygen hose can fit on. I have elbow on mine to connect my oxygen.
