How To Germinate Moringa Or Drumstick Seeds Easily | Paper Towel Method | Grow your own Moringa

  • Germinating moringa seeds by the paper towel method is very easy, effective and efficient . I have found transplanting moringa seedlings giving me excellent results - better germination , stronger seedlings and rapid growth after transplant as compared to direct sowing results .
    PAPER TOWEL METHOD OF GERMINATING SEEDS : It is a great way of germinating all types of seeds, small , big , difficult to germinate seeds , old seeds . It saves a lot of precious time when we want to grow seeds that take a long time to germinate - eg eggplants, chillies , peppers etc . The paper towel method helps us know which seeds are germinating and we can sow only those seeds into seedling trays or pots , thereby saving critical time lost waiting for seeds to come up in the growing season.
    Moringa seeds are available in regular and dwarf varieties . My 4 year old is a regular variety and the seedlings you see me growing in this video are dwarf , I would like to compare the growth and output of both varieties in my small space partial shade container garden.
    Where To Buy :
    1. Moringa seeds are easily available in India at any garden store or online on ebay.in and amazon.in . In the US , one can buy them at www.rareseeds.com
    2. Green grow bags : I got mine from www.manidharmabiotech.com , this website has almost everything a gardener needs . The grow bags are also available on ebay.in and amazon.in

    My 4 year old Moringa tree is a regular one , the seedlings I showed you in this video are dwarf variety which I am experimenting with this year to see if there is any benefit of growing the dwarf one. It is possible the dwarf will give me adequate moringa pods to harvest , which is not my aim for growing it , I grow it purely for the leaves but it may help others who are keen to grow it both for pod and leaves . The regular moringa grows perfect too in my small space in grow bags as long as it is getting adequate sun , it has produced 2 pods just once .

      Any chance you can do an update on the differences you found in growing regular and dwarf moringa? I would be very interested in hearing what you have to say. You really do have a beautiful little system developed for yourself. I like the music and how you do your videos, too. So relaxing and very easy to follow. I get so tired of these videos that shout or spend all their time speed-talking at me. Loved the CaliKim vid with you too. #GirlGardenersRule LOL

    Hello, how are you doing? Soon after I sent you the last message, I was able to get some
    moringa seeds from the US. It was from a company that sells all kinds of seeds and before you replied advising me about your friend. Next time I will definitely get from your friend. I had received the seeds a few days ago and I started the germination according to your video and advice. They germinated yesterday and I thought of telling you about it and to thank you once again for this video. In am here today to see how you transplanted them from the paper towel. Thanks again and God Bless.

      Great that you got some moringa seeds and they germinated , yayyy , just give them the sunniest spot and water very very little for your weather . My friends YT channel is lovers4healthylife , it is an active channel , I think I mentioned for instead of 4 , hence you could not find it .

    • @zeenatkhan2044

      Thanks for your reply. I had transplanted the germinated seeds from the paper towel to cups following your instructions and the seedlings started to grow. Right now they look like yours did on 18.01.2017. I was very happy to see them grow but now they have started to droop. The stalks are very thin and frail looking. It is still very cold in Toronto so I have them indoors by a window. I came to see your video again and you have mentioned they should be watered from the bottom. I had missed that even though I have seen your video umpteen times. I was giving them very little water every couple of days. Now I shall be very careful and I hope they dont die on me. Incidentally this is the first time in my life seeds have germinated for me - all thanks to your instructions. I cant thank you enough. Best regards

    Hi, i heard in one of your post about sunn hemp plant. Any idea if we get seeds for this plant. i am not able to get it in Chennai or not found it properly

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sunn hemp seeds are easily available in certain states of India , it is used by farmers as green manure or to fix nitrogen in the soil , so you will probably get it at stores that sell seeds for farmers rather than kitchen gardeners . Here in Mumbai I got it from Namdeo Umaji at Byculla for Rs 200 per kg , I have it in my fridge since 2 years , excellent germination. It is also known as Indian hemp , Madras hemp . You could show them a picture of the flowers . It is available certain months of the year when the farmers are going to sow, they have told me to check in April for the seeds .

    So happy to see your video. Glad to know they can be potted in a large container and not necessarily in the yard. I live in rental property and once, many years ago, I started some lemon trees from seeds. I gave all away but one, planted it in the yard. Later we lost our house due to financial difficulties and so I chose to not try to remove the tree, wishing not to shock it. It was so beautiful....

      One thing I can tell you about moringa is the more heat the better . It grows along roadsides here in Mumbai uncared for and flourishes in peak summers when other plants and humans are wilting . Drought tolerant too , nitrogen fixer , does not like being babied . Prune it to promote a bushier shorter tree in warm weather when it shows active growth .

      What I will suggest is you grow the dwarf variety in a large pot and move it indoors in the winter . moringa thrives in the heat , the hotter the better . Even when it cools down slightly in Mumbai which is like 20 C , moringa leaves start to turn yellow . I don't know how cold it gets in your area but I know of a gardener in North Carolina - Permaculture Homestead is the name of this channel , he has moringa growing in his back yard and the tree comes back to life in spring since the last 2 years . If you have similar weather , you could try in ground and see if it works for you next season.

      We don’t have winter here in Mumbai, lowest would be 18 Celsius for a few days in December or January . Moringa leaves become yellow at this time for us and shed .
      Most of the year we are between 30 to 38 C , the hotter it gets , moringa thrives .
      You could grow in a container and get it indoors if possible in south facing area . Or then grow annually.

      Moringa is the type of tree that you can just cut it back to whatever level you want to cut it back to in order to move it
      I've seen somebody cut back a tree that may have been 8 feet tall all the way down to about 1 foot and then take stalks and branches after removing the leaves take those stalks and branches and cut them up into three foot lengths and put those in the ground and almost everything grows.
      Another great thing about Moringa is that you don't have to plant it right away you can hold on to it to plant later.

    So what is it? I am getting confused now. Some people say soak for 24 hours then 6 to 7 days to germinate using your method and you are saying soak for only a few hours and wrap in paper towel and zip lock bag for only a few days.. Which is it?

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4 - 6 hours of soaking ( just like we would for our dry beans) so that the seed swells up after taking in water is enough to kick start the germination process , after which it goes into the paper towel like I showed in the video .
      I'm sure people may have soaked for longer duration and still had success , I think there are more chances for the seed to rot with that long of a soaking .

      Hi Prisha thanks 😊.
      Definitely you don't need to buy chemically treated seeds .
      If the moringa pod has dried on the tree definitely you can use those seeds to grow , however seeds in green pods that we eat are not mature and will not germinate .

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you , glad you found the video helpful . So you get 3 hours sun through the year , that is wonderful , you can have a chilly plant , curry leaf plant , may be cherry tomatoes , moringa , lemon grass , ajwain patta ( Cuban oregano , grows easily from cuttings ) . Regular moringa will do fine if you dont find dwarf , as I mentioned before , just keep pruning once the plant is established and you feel it is falling and needs support , cut off 6 inches or more from the top. It will send out side growth and more leaves for you. Resist the temptation of pulling out leaves from the bottom .

    Hello Mumbai Balcony Gardiner: just saw yr video - & got a few seeds today from a friend - shall follow your recommendation, Question - how low temp can this plant withstand..because this Jan was abnormal got wind shield temp as low as 2degrees F in south Gulf coast & quite a few plants could not withstand the intense cold weather. As an eg: We had a Plumeria in Bombay going back 45 years in time - was good all year - but over here the when temp hits 40F had to bring it indoors and so far so good it is 13 years old. Please comment ..thanks

      These are heat loving trees , thriving without care in heat of May and October in Mumbai . The leaves turn yellow in monsoons and even in the very mild cool season that we have in Mumbai year end , 20 to 25 C . You will need to grow these as annuals if you have winter and probably bring them into your garage if possible . Check @californiagardening for his moringa video .

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3 reasons
      1 . General ageing of leaves and these are older leaves , not young new leaves .
      2. Winter or cold weather - moringa loves hot weather , in cool season leaves turn yellow and fall off .
      3 . Overwatering : either by us or rains .
