Furthermore, he gave some of the best performances of all time and was part of some of the best movies of all time in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
There are at least 2 things one can say about this performance that qualify it as great film acting: (1) DeNiro was able to create nuance and depth WHILE NOT EVEN SPEAKING HIS NATIVE TONGUE. He speaks, what, four words in English the entire film? That alone is an incredible feat. (2) More significantly, when one considers how by the time Godfather II was released in 1974 the character of Vito Corleone had been so INDELIBLY linked to Brando in the public consciousness, what DeNiro achieved here was remarkable. Most actors would find it impossible to play this role and not impersonate a young Brando. But DeNiro doesn't do that here: indeed, he plays a young VITO! How can anyone follow Brando? Well, DeNiro essentially did. Incredible, incredible acting. Added bonus: consider how different this performance is from DeNiro's role in Mean Streets (released the previous year - 1973). Yes they're both Italian hoods, but the CHARACTERS are different. Corleone is calculated, whereas Johnny Boy is an impulsive hothead.
In case you haven't already noticed, both Oscar-winning actors in the first 2 Godfather films were not there to accept the award. Marlon Brando won Leading Actor in 1973 and wasn't there and Robert De Niro wasn't here for this 1975 Supporting Actor win, either.

Now Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose have joined the ranks for playing the same role in both versions of West Side Story and winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Vito Corleone and Joker won the oscar 2 times...best cinema carachters, and 4 focking fantastic actors
Geez Coppola what a great prediction. Sad to see where both of their careers have gone now though
...
Robert De Niro is one of the greatest actor of all time period.
Renaud.. the greatest.
Very good but I like Al Pacino a little better.
Three nominees for the same movie in one category. Talk about a movie being legendary
Lee Strasberg: "I didn't win? But... But... I PIONEERED Method acting!"
De Niro: "Yeah, but look, I'm so method, that when I play Marlon Brando in a Godfather movie, I win an Oscar and then don't show up to collect it! That's going deep!"
😂😂 but I am sure Lee strasberg is proud of de niro . De niro was also a student in actors studio
I'm sure Lee Strasberg felt very awkward, he's the best drama teacher.
It's 2018 and I am crying
good god.
Jeff Bridges looked 40 for 30 years.
He was only like 25 back then
De Niro best performance will always be Taxi Driver, hands down, his best role
1:48, he signalled her to announce d nominees
They're generations apart, but Jack Nicholson is sitting right next to Fred Astaire, two legends together bridging Hollywood's entire history. I wonder what they said to each other.
I always prefered Lee Strasbergs performance as Hyman Roth.
Greatest actor of all time
I see Robbie is upholding the Vito Corleone tradition of not showing up to receive your Oscar huh
Jeff Bridges performance in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot was outstanding.
He didn't deserve to die dammitt 🙋🤦🙇🙏🏽🙏🏽
Poor Tatum back then, you can see she is a nervous wreck around that controlling Ryan! And seriously, no one could help the kid get a professional haircut and appropriate dress!?? 🤔
