Way more educational than I was expecting! Thanks for the info on an ancient culture I had no idea was so relevant to todays western society. Well done and tastefully handled. Cheers
What do you mean by relevant to today's Western society? Other than their concept of gender which has been ingrained as part of their culture. While the West only started to adopt this concept which wasn't part of their culture.
@@PokeTwilight The point is that transgender people have always exist and exist in every culture...Native Americans called them Two Spirit. The difference is only how much or how little each culture represses them and forces them to adhere to gender binaries. The west traditionally would literally kill people for being transgender. Now it's becoming more accepting and certain people have a huge problem with that (like you, probably). This tribe is a good example of what happens when you let people just be who are they. Nobody is forcing someone in this tribe to be a man who dresses like a woman if they don't want to, and vice versa.

Ok, so this episode was sooooooooooo weird and I'm all for it!!! Not only did I get educated about different elements within a religion, different names for genders and how they associate themselves, but the food looks so YUMMY! 😋🤤 I absolutely LOVED this episode! 🖤🖤🖤 Edited to add that when I mentioned the episode was weird, I'm in NO way, shape, form or fashion, saying that the people, their religion, the way they label and see themselves, or the food are weird. I was just stating that it's weird because it's mostly things I've never seen or heard of before. 🖤
Our ancestor's pure belief and tradition was supposed to be animism just like the people that live in pacific islands While the traditions and ideas in indonesia right now are already mixed and imported from india (especially hinduism).. This is still just sulawesi.. You will be more shocked to see the traditions that against islam in java, sumatera. Especially javanese and sundanese people.. There many many of them who still being strong believer for the traditional beliefs even though they are moslems or christians
The term "boogeyman" is actually from the word "Bugis man". They were pirates who would raid Dutch vessels at night during colonial times. They'd wear all black, smear coal all over their face, and raid Dutch vessels at night. Dutch parents started telling their misbehaving kids "you better behave or the bugi man will get you". Then when the Dutch settled in New Amsterdam (New York now) it became "boogeyman".
Sonny says, quote "I came here to seek understanding about a culture very different from my own but the reality is sometimes culture is messy, it's layered and it's confusing, as I leave this place all I know for certain there is no other quite like it". I wish more people can understand what he means. That, “this difference makes this world more beautiful than ever.”
i love that a video like this both educates people that may have a closed off mindset to gender outside the binary in a quick and lighthearted way, and is also just its regular own funny food show that showcases cultures around the world. some people may not agree with gender politics but we all need to acknowledge that people like this exist in many cultures❤

Kudos Sonny, you’ve discovered a great way to entertain us while also educating us about all these various unique cultures and awesome people… this is some National Geographic level videos.
There are 1,340 regional ethnic groups in the country according to the 2010 BPS census. There are 718 regional languages. As expected by the founding fathers of the Indonesian nation. Unity in Diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) (various ethnic groups, one Indonesian nation) with the motto of prioritizing Indonesian, mastering foreign languages, preserving regional languages. It can be said that Indonesian is a new language that is taught to all Indonesian people and has become the national language of instruction for regional tribes. Therefore, if there are foreign tourists to Indonesia, few people master English or other foreign languages. because each region mastered the local language and Indonesian. In contrast to China which has one language, namely Mandarin British and American which uses English, Germany which has German, Saudi Arabia which uses Arabic. therefore it is quite easy to master foreign languages of other countries. while we prioritize Indonesian and their respective regions sometimes learn other regional languages such as the Javanese tribe which has 3 regional languages, namely Ngoko, Krama, and Krama Inggil. each region of Java has quite no differences in language.
Man, this brings back fond memories of past adventures.....and indeed, the people are fascinating and one can't learn everything in a day...I spend weeks and still find the life fascinating....

i watched you 5 years ago when your channel was fairly new and was like 20k views in a month. hats off to you sir, you blew your channel to success. what a dedication.
Most of those indonesiand foods are also available in the Island of Mindanao (Philippines) islam of mindanao and Indonesia along with both ethnic tribes share a common influence. Love your show ever since you started here in Philippines.
Are you muslim from Mindanao?
Indonesian are filipino austronesian bloodline we sailed to there islands not the other way around that why we share austronesian language as a filipino i can understand Javanese language
@@alochoa7057 you are exagerating. even the neighbouring tribe could not completely understand Javanese.
@@jareedmareed6711 i can understand it by broken words but i cant even understand ilocano or visaya or rhe other filipino austronesian languages only tagalog Indonesian are austronesian people we sailed 3000 years ago there not the other way around when an Indonesian take DNA it shows. Filipino 50 percent and thai and cambodian might be from the cham people get a life
@@alochoa7057 I guess the javanese words you know are of the sanskrit. archeological proves show Java has been the centre power in the archipelago. Never heard of any from Mindanau.
Way more educational than I was expecting! Thanks for the info on an ancient culture I had no idea was so relevant to todays western society. Well done and tastefully handled. Cheers
Yep, it's almost like western culture is regressing to these weird, paganistic gender beliefs...
It's not just u.. as a singaporean muslim i'm also confuse.. But my hat's to u for trying to understand and always respect different culture..👍👍👍 #aPeace
Yes Bugis people have a big presence in Singapore since the old era.
@noah you mean boy in thumbnail
Before the colonization of the world, many cultures recognized multi genders and the were deemed special. After religion took over is when we were forced to believe it was a bad thing. Thank you Sonny for showing this
At around 10 minutes in, he's trying the fish surrounded by the local women. It's really great seeing their reactions. You can tell these are a lovely people full of humor and warmth.
This was amazing how you introduced a culture with these unique gender experiences and traditions and that you in such a beautiful soft way stood for treating people inclusively and supportively in the proper humanistic approach. Well done sir. Asking about how he felt and perceived the use of that name toward him, and his preference otherwise, was poignant. You have a great show.
He was making fun of them so relax

For Exploring Our Buginese Culture and Food
Sonny and the team, you are the goat! Thankyou for making these kind of videos thats not only focusing just on the food, but the culture and history too. Big big respect from me
I love that your show is mostly about the people and their culture. Not just food. Keep it up Sonny! Such a unique thing yal are doing. Hope your diarrhea heals lol
Sonny is natural......always a pleasure watching him.
Absolutely your best side shown here. How you’ve grown since I first started watching you in your first videos all those years ago to now, you should hold yourself high in how respectful, intuitive, entertaining, not ignorant and passionate. Best video yet.
Two thumbs up to Sonny and the crew... thank you for taking me to places that are new to my knowledge that they exist because most of the time I hear only about Bali or Jakarta. And this time about the 5 gender community... stay safe and I hope that you will be healed by that ritual...😊
Love watching your videos Sonny, not only because of the food journey you take us through but the exposure you give us to into the lives and culture of so many people
terima kasih Kaka Sonny sudah berkunjung di negara Saya Indonesia.
Terima kasih telah berkunjung dikampung kami
Bugis Segeri 🙏🙏🙏
woah.. i never knew that the traditional buginese acknowledge 5 gender in their culture... and i lived just 5 hours from the place for 23 years... never thought that a foreigner will be the one that told me about my own culture... THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR THE CONTENT SONNY
Brilliant episode. As a regular traveller to Indonesia, this was so educational. Thank you Sonny and team!
My fav part is the saliva from the smokiest mouth onto Sonny's eyebrow for his diarrhea healing! 🤣😂
As Indonesian i never know this tradition but now i know and more like woah my country really really rich with tradition and tolerance so yeah 👍
No problem sometime we dont even know our urban village head
its start from sumatra island to java and now sulawesi.. i think next video some tribe in maluku island or borneo
Indonesia is really beautiful and tolerant. I really wish the people maintain this harmony and be happy and peaceful. Namaste from India.
Indonesians are not proper muslims. They are like forest people. Please follow islam like described in Quaran.
@@mernkanthri3941 if being proper forest people makes the Indonesians better humans than that itself is OK rather than following anything that is detrimental to their beautiful way of life.
Hello Sony and to the whole team!! I just want to congratulate you all !! What an excellent job everyone , I still remember all those videos you made before you even got a 500k subscribers, I am the one of those first subscriber of this chanel , and I am so happy that you all made it this far!! ❤️God bless and more success you all deserved it .
Ok, so this episode was sooooooooooo weird and I'm all for it!!! Not only did I get educated about different elements within a religion, different names for genders and how they associate themselves, but the food looks so YUMMY! 😋🤤 I absolutely LOVED this episode! 🖤🖤🖤
Edited to add that when I mentioned the episode was weird, I'm in NO way, shape, form or fashion, saying that the people, their religion, the way they label and see themselves, or the food are weird. I was just stating that it's weird because it's mostly things I've never seen or heard of before. 🖤
No need to explaining hard we understand ✌️
@@nyomanraiartaguna5030 🖤🖤🖤 sadly, some people will rip me apart for saying that. Thank you!!! 🖤🖤🖤

Our ancestor's pure belief and tradition was supposed to be animism just like the people that live in pacific islands
While the traditions and ideas in indonesia right now are already mixed and imported from india (especially hinduism)..
Boogeyman or boogeywoman?!
Once more, this leaves us wanting to learn more about the culture. Great job Sonny & team!
Good job Sonny, thank you for introducing bugis people to the world 😊
I've read about different cultures recognizing different genders but hadn't seen such an awesome and personal video like this!!
He also said "i think that Bisu is addicted to cigarettes" lol
No
The music during the goat head wrapping scene was absolutely amazing😅
i love that a video like this both educates people that may have a closed off mindset to gender outside the binary in a quick and lighthearted way, and is also just its regular own funny food show that showcases cultures around the world. some people may not agree with gender politics but we all need to acknowledge that people like this exist in many cultures❤
Sonny…..I have to know…..Did the Bisu cure you? Once again, thank you for taking us on this most amazing journey and sharing the traditions, religion, the local food(s), and the people, of this part of Indonesia that I didn’t even know existed. ❤
I wanted to ask too! But saw your comment before I went to comment myself. I wanted to comment: but did your diarrhea get cured?? 🤷♀️
So I decided to react to your comment. Though I might still comment myself. That way maybe he has more of a chance to see it. We people need to know! Lol
@@Melon_Cloud ……Right?!? Inquiring minds definitely NEED to know! I wish Sonny would’ve touched upon the reasoning for the saliva on the eyebrows a bit more. ☺️
@@Melon_Cloud Sonny needs the Bisu to cure his fear of eating cucumber lol
Of course it didnt cure. This type of "magical healers" are common in south asia/south east asia. They " treat " all sorts of Diseases and but what cures is time, endurance, clean and careful living+eating for few days.
Sonny needs to take a daily probiotic to fix his diarrhea.
Sonny, you are leaps and bounds ahead of other travel channels. I've learned so much from your travels. Thank you so much.
Indonesian here and from Java island, i just love what we have as a citizen.
Unity In Diversity 😊
My man Sonny has endured the squirts for literal years now just as a by-product of giving us our entertainment. What a guy!
Being a son of a Bugis Father and Javanese mom is the best thing ever for me, enjoying the multi-cultural food in any big event is something that i've always waiting for.
The most diverse country🇮🇩❤
Thanks Sonny bring this beautiful videos
I was living in bugis tribe and this video bring a beautiful memories
The Bisu & Bugis ways are so genuine and peaceful. It’s beautiful how they are very accepting of their own people no Mayer how they are born.
Sonny, you are a kind, open-minded, and respectful individual. You are showing sides even Indonesians don't know about, I hope Indonesia can be as open-minded as you are in the future.
Such unique food items in Indonesia, thank you for sharing, well done segment, I appreciate and enjoyed this video content..
Thank you for visiting our country 🇮🇩😍
Hi! I love your show so much!! Love ❤️❤️
Very interested in the different ethnic groups of Indonesia. So excited to see the Bugis people!!
Sonny, I enjoy so much learning more about my own country from you. Our social science teachers never taught us about this tribe in Indonesia that acknowledges 5 genders...
I will simply say, you guys on BEFRS are the real GOAT.
That seasoning is 🔥… Food looks spectacular and yummy 🤤
Sonny: "I've been shitting my guts out for the past several years."
Also Sonny: "I've been drinking booze like a fish for the last several years."

he probably has been chuggin probiotics for years tho... that and rest only thing to help me. got like persistent inflammation thing, .. sure the continued expore wont help him, but if it ever normalized, i am sure his gut would be pretty strong!
Awww this is amazing, i can’t believe you visited bugis... fantastic show sony... thank you 🙏
Sonny has a iron stomach as it is with this new blessing he will be UNSTOPPABLE!!
You're doing much better than geography books. Terima kasih
Thank you for sharing your travels and stories. Interesting slices of life, Sir. I am gravitating towards your Asian stories.
Man, this brings back fond memories of past adventures.....and indeed, the people are fascinating and one can't learn everything in a day...I spend weeks and still find the life fascinating....
You're not the only one confusing. Add me into it 😅. Seeing this episode, it taught me one of our culture that has not been published anywhere.
It's actually published, there's a book about that actually
Its amazing how you guys go in-depth with the research! Even the back ground score is also heavy metal-ish. Since many indonesians are metalheads, even the PM Joko 😂
The team that put together this video is hilarious. I love the sound effects, editing...so funny!

I gotta say I get super grossed out by a lot of things shown on this channel but all of these dishes really made me want to be there. They looked amazing the Goat and the Boxfish were done so well I just need to try those.
The Boxfish called Kudu Kudu in Sulawesi, it has latin name Ostracion Cubicus. The price of this fish is expensive in restaurant and for me the taste of fried kudu kudu fish like chicken.
