Due to their lack of education, they and their families continued to be indentured laborers (bonded laborers) for generations. The landlords who belong to the dominant caste take advantage of their illiteracy and continue to exploit them. Luckily, a few IITians have formed a residential school for the Mushahar kids and they are now attending medical colleges and engineering schools.

    What I find most interesting about this episode is how uncomfortable the guide is about eating these foods. It's a good juxtaposition showing us how most "modern" people would react to being offered such food. Then there's Sonny who comes in enthusiastically curious about how the food is acquired, prepared and served where he relishes the taste of the food no matter how bland or bizarre it is. It really shows Sonny's commitment to his craft and the underbelly of the show showcasing the people, their culture and lifestyle in their unique part of the world. Sonny has become the best at his craft.

    • @SeemsLogical
      @SeemsLogical ปีที่แล้ว +71

      @@aunish6748 If it was served to me it would be rude to refuse. Eating rat would probably taste better than most of us imagined it would taste. At least the rat was cooked and thoroughly seasoned. I would think if the "hang up" is that eating rat would make you sick since it is such a filthy animal, Sonny has eaten far riskier food in the past and been fine. What's so risky about eating it after it's been cooked?
      Sonny even said in this episode "If your options were to eat meat only once a week or eat rat, I can see why people chose to eat rats. It's free, why not make use of it?" In some parts of the world that's the mindset you gotta have to survive.

    In India different states have a variety of delicacies, like if you go to Kerala you will be introduced to Pork, Rabbit, Duck, etc. In Assam you can find pigeons, silk worms. Nagaland is famous for Dog meat..
    So each state has a variety of delicacies which cannot be found in the other.
    Such diversity can be seen only here and hence the statement "In India you cannot find unusual creatures/meat" is not entirely true.

    I'm always so impressed when people, who are living in what we'd consider poverty here in the North American bubble, are willing to share their food and home with Will. I'm flabbergasted when they break out the big ticket items and delicacies on his account. Expending precious meat from their own farms and stables. Even if he's compensating them in some way, it is still an amazing show of generosity and grace. I'm grateful, since I greatly enjoy seeing different kinds of food and preparation methods from all over the world.

    Omg Sonny! Thank you for representing these two communities. The Tharus are tribal people of Southern Nepal so they are not a part of the caste system, although discriminated. Some even have connections to the Newar community that you vlogged about. The Musahar community is the oppressed caste community from the Madhesi (Southern Nepal community) people. The exist cross border in India also. They exist throughout many states in north India. I'm so happy you represented them in this format showing their food culture. I'm from the northern Nepali community we aren't as exposed to the Madhesi Dalit community but this was eye opening. I really hope things change in the future and they get their due respect.

    To all the people saying rats are unhygienic to eat, that is true only in urban areas where rats feed on human sewage and waste. In rural areas, rats feed on leftover field crops or roots, and are far less likely to carry parasites. No different from eating pigs or goats, which will feed on the same stuff.

    This is such a learning experience. Glad you and your team put yourselves out there Sonny! It's a tragedy how the caste system is still in effect despite us moving further into the 20th century. I wish people would open their minds to put aside their differences and view things objectively instead of discriminately. I'd even go further to say your videos are respectful, fun and family-friendly - certainly something schools could use to educate kids on cultures around the world!

    Just a information which i wanted to share with all of you. “Musahar” is a term derived from the word “Moos” which translates to Rat in some Indian languages. We have similar communities in India as well who have Rat as their basis source of meat. Such a similarity between the two nations❤
