In Indonesia, the left hand is traditionally perceived as the hand used to clean oneself after going to the toilet. When shaking hands, offering a gift, giving or receiving something, eating, pointing or touching someone, among other things, it is considered proper etiquette to only use the right hand. I had to look it up😂😌😂

They will take care of them as if they're still alive, consider this as a limbo phase for them. The more higher the person's social status and prestige when still alive, the more buffalos needed to get slaughtered.

Seriously. I tried google info about the Torajan people in my mother tongue (swedish) and english. Sonny has covered more about their culture, (more specific: their cermonies around the funeral) in this video than you can find from digging in google in english. It's in one way sad that there isn't more written about their unique culture (in languages I understand), but also that is a testament of what this channel and the team from time to time produces; short educational videos on the HIGHEST level. Even though not in an academic sense but still very admirable and makes a social anthropologist like myself very happy.

Some comments are confused why these people eat some pigs whereas Indonesian are muslim (perhaps you guys are confused with previous videos in this channel , ie : Indonesian ed).
FYI, not ALL Indonesian are muslim even though the majority of them are muslim.
This ceremony was taken in Toraja tribe village (Sulawesi Island) in which all of them are Cristian, so they do eat pigs etc.
Indonesia is very huge country with a lot of Islands/traditions /local languages/ cultures for each region. Even though majority are muslim, but not all of them are muslim. There are 5+ religions in Indonesia : Islam, Cristian, Catholic, Hindu, Budhis, and there are also animism etc.. so it is very diverse

My father is torajan, and i attend this ceremony once when his grandfather die. There’s like 35-40 buffalo and 20-25 pigs butchered at that ceremony (i don’t know the exact number since it was alread 17 years ago). I asked why there’s many buffalo to offer? And it is said that the buffalo will be the dead vehicle in the afterlife. There’s also some horror things happen and believe it or not is up to you. One night me and my cousin was playing with the chicken outside and i saw a man in a black clothes come to the house of the coffin with plates in his hand. So i asked my grandfather what is it, and he said its a red sticky rice. I asked once again why he bring that to the house of coffin, and he answered once again “to offer the food for my father” and i was kinda confused since his father is dead and asked “he is dead how can he eat that?” And my grandfather just smiled at me. Around 2 hours later me and my cousin sneak under the coffin house just to find out and that night we witnessed something that we can’t forget. We hear and saw (although it’s not clear since there’s no much source of light) someone eat at the house of coffin, and after that there’s sound like the top of coffin is opened and closed not long after.

The "long bean" you are holding in 6:52 is not a bean.
It is a long pepper, the cousin of Piper ningrum that we commonly known as pepper (black & white pepper).
It is known in Indonesian as cabe jamu, or cabe Jawa, also called as lada (which is also how 🌶 and white &black pepper is called)
It has some spice kickin it.
And we had exported it since ancient times, along with pepper, nutmeg, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. Reaching Rome and China.
