The roof rack looks really cool! Its also definitely more stealthy - looks like a design choice or a reinforcement of some kind and it delightfully matches the other black elements of the van exterior. I think it will definitely decrease the amount of people who clock your van as a home.
    10 out of 10!!

I have an Orion on my 2023 159 Promaster and I love it. One big help was that I ordered the Loctite 504469 Silver-Grade Anti-Seize Stick along with the Loctite 248 Blue Thread-locker Stick. The stick version of these products is so much cleaner and easier to use. No mess at all.

THIS! OKAY AMAZING! Cause I think that’s what they use in their video & I knew there had to be an easier way to do it haha 😂😅 Thank you for commenting this!

The liquid threadlockers usually have a shelf life of only 2 years from manufacture, or one year from opening. Which is one reason why people say "they don't work."
When the Japanese first started exporting cars to the US, every threaded part had a coating on it, so they killed the rattles and lose screws Detroit had.
I bought a half dozen "sticks" of different kinds last year, hoping they have a long shelf life. But once you learn how well they work, it becomes a religion. Lug nuts, exhaust connectors, everything just WORKS. Although the antiseize manages to get EVERYWHERE if you use even a drop of it.

Yeah, it's a paste like a glue stick a child uses in elementary school. Twist the bottom to expose more loctite out the cap end top. Works like a charm. I've used it on my Honda bikes when replacing hardware.@@ToryDelury

That was awesome. I was a Civil War reenactor, woke up in the morning to use the restroom (Porta potty) and looked outside, there were a bunch of cardboard horses scattered around our campground. I trotted out to one, stepped inside, put the straps over my shoulders, and trotted to the Porta potty, dismounted, used the restroom, got back on the horse, trotted back to my tent, went back in, we later did calvary drills in the horses. What a fun day.

And this rail-system looks easy and useful.

Eh, can't say it looks "more stealthy". In fact, it would make me more curious as to what it is. These days, when we see a large van parked anywhere at anytime, it's not uncommon to wonder if anyone lives in there. The days of stealth urban camping are over. But it looks nice.

  • @pdx650

Tory, thanks for recording and posting this video about the roof rack. Orion is headquartered 30 miles from my house and a mile from the 'Spruce Goose' at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. I am familiar with this location and pass through Mcminnville whenever I go to the coast (Pacific City, Tierra Del Mar, Tillamook). Glad you have joined the community. I want to get a 2010-2020 Chevy Express Long wheel base (155") cargo van with the 6.0-liter gas engine ('L96' engine code) with a 6-speed tranny. Doing some research, the L96 is the least problematic V-8 to go with. From what I have read, it is a reliable engine and returns decent economy for a V8. Port fuel injection is a must on these Gen 4 (IV) engines. Some of these and have locking differentials and a 4x4 conversion can be done to them. I am planning on going with a high top conversion as well. How are you liking your fwd Ducato/ProMaster?

Tory, this is my second round watching this video. I’d never really considered the weight capacity of the roof of the van and I was amazed by how little weight the van roof can hold. This makes me wonder how to reinforce the roof to meet things I want in my design. I don’t have a van yet, and due to this video, I’ll likely build a schoolie first so that I can experiment with the design I am after with a much more affordable vehicle. Thank you for this video, and others of your build process.

Great roof rack. It would serve well to install a 360 security camera system on it. Cameras on the back facing forward and cameras on the front facing backward and a backup camera and some LED spot lights to light up areas. Best security for the money. Great job. That is the best roof rack I have ever seen. Well worth what ever it cost. BTW if you invest in cordless tools you work will be 10 times easier and 3 time faster.

Very nice so far!!! Daydreaming about this now, I'd get various magnetic signs to place on the outside for made-up electrical contracting and construction companies so the stealth factor is increased. Also, no window covers for the front, instead separate just behind seats with blackout curtain or sealed door/wall.

As someone who is converting a retired ambulance to an RV I have to say I’m enjoying your videos very much and I am considering a heated floor and I will reach out to the Orion people to see if they can help me with a rack that will actually fit this old ambulance.
Well, I on the one hand thoroughly enjoy your videos. Your tagline at the end, however, frustrates me. It’s highly unlikely that you will ever see me in your next video and I say this because you say at the end of this video that “I’ll see you (me) next time”, and that’s not true and the truth has become rather important to me these days for certain reasons.
But anyway, I thoroughly love your video presentations I think it’s so much fun when you interject clips from films and multiple versions of you and so on I just really think it’s kind of cool actually.

Stealth, I think, is more about not being SEEN living in your van. Looks great though. I'm gonna be "stealth" sleeping in my SUV, kind of "backpacking" by car -- not as comfortable, maybe, but I'll be able to spend more on AirBnbs, hotels, hostels and travel longer distances slowly -- I hope.

I wish they made a universal roof rack or a rack for chevy express vans

Lock-Tight glue is not good for all applications. I had a tire shop that put my wheels on using it and within a week all four almost fell off, on the highway. I pulled over and every one of them was finger tight. I tightened them and when back to the tire shop where they took all wheels off and cleaned the Lock-tight off of them. The one cleaning them up said it is not good to use it on the tires because the wheels get hot from tire and brake friction, and it affects the Lock-Tight and they loosen.

Maybe it's just because I'm a vanlifer but that type of roof rack is just as much a dead giveaway that it's a camper as the maxxair and solar panels. Only campers use that type of rack.

Out of all the options there are that involve still having solar panels & a fan for circulation. Do you think there is a better option? Genuinely asking. I would love to know, this was the best I personally found. I highly value stealth but not enough to compromise & not have solar panels or a Maxxair fan. So I need something to hide it. I saw a dude break a ladder in half and use that as his roof rack so it looked like he just had a ladder on his roof THAT WAS CRAZY SICK! Probably wouldn’t hide anything from the front and back view and no deflector to help fuel economy etc etc so not a route I think most people are going to be wanting to take though. But what would you say is the best route for stealth while still having the typical amenities?
