I'll be honest I only started watching your videos because you were cute and you wore short skirts but you're quite intelligent and the videos are very useful as well, You wouldn't know it's actually quite rare to get a compliment from me; I will be on the path of building my own van in a few months I'm not getting a loan I'm gonna buy it outright so I have a few more months of saving. See you down the road :)
I did Not want a white van! I got the dark vrey and Wow THAT IS STEALTH! IT Blends with shade so well I lose track of it and even at not is more stealth than black! I camp in woods and public access - Down by the River!
I was thinking this video is so professional , but you a professional even if you don’t always feel like it ! You produce some of the easiest to digest information for people who don’t know things like me, thanks for doing so much research!
I have watched so many campervan videos. So many are entertaining, but low on quality helpful information. You did your research and it is appreciated. Great video.
Tory, you're very informative and well researched which is really impressive. I just wanted to give you a little bit of advice. When referring to your vehicle's drive system, you have front wheel drive, not forward wheel drive. Vehicles are always front, rear, all or four wheel drive.
Thank you. You gave me some good ideas. Also, I bolted a lockable box to the back door which holds a lot of stuff I used often but don't want inside my van. That is below the windows so helps lower the center of gravity and I put a lot of bulk in it but not a lot of weight so it will not tip my van to the back. Most of the weight of it is in the metal box and straps that it fastens to, rather than its content. Although, I do keep some firewood in the bottom of it. I also added a 2nd fuel tank to the bottom of my van and that helps me go longer without fill ups and helps the center of gravity, especially when it is full.
I've been looking into getting out of a truck camper and getting a Van. I notice all of the large commercial van builders, like Winnebago etc ALL are featuring Solar systems, around 300 watts of panels. So be sure your roof rack has room enough to install many panels to have a high tech van. On that note, I just watched your Renaissance Faire video and saw your lack of A/C dilemma. A lot of the newest van builds now have DC Air Conditioners, where you don't need a generator for off grid air conditioning. When you go to get your electric power station installed, discuss with them how much solar power would be needed to run a DC Air Conditioner. As much as you enjoyed (?) Western winter weather, wait until you experience Western severe summer heat! 115 degrees in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas is becoming common. You will NEED A/C to live in your van full time...
I was just about to say raises, but n/m. Just consider a sturdy low profile (less noise and resistance) roof rack only for solar panels and maybe an awning. Not for storing anything else. Vans are build for cargo inside, not on top. Putting a lot of wood, etc on the ceiling and walls already makes it top heavy. Some even forget about the max load capacity of the van, usually less than you think. Also the more weight, the lower the gas mileage.
As a cdl driver who hauled 9 Car trailers, The clarence thing is something i'm absolutely not Worried about considering the fact that the biggest anxiety that I had was sometimes. I would be 17 feet high and the fact that I can't be hitting branches. Because I have brand new 2020 vehicles up above, So that being said, it wouldn't be something I would personally be concerned about anyways. I just subscribed to you. Appreciate the video
I really like this design that hides the solar panels. Probably the only thing I would have done different would have been to paint the black panels white to blend into the white van body making it appear to be a part of the van vs. an addon.
Here's a question: Have you considered suspension modification, to (better) control handling? That's my 2 cents, for free ((wink)) That was (another) informative edit.

put a company name on the side, something like septic repair then no one would break in to your van or even knock on the door if they think its full of poop or think of another type of business that would make people think twice about bothering you. just an idea

Merlin solar panels are the best that’s what I put on mine I got about $12,000 it’s all aluminum with the best solar panels you can get it’s like they say you get what you pay for I can walk on my panels they hold up to 750 pounds
Height is an important factor. My high roof sprinter sits at 2.9 meters. There are a ton of 3 meter bridges around so you might only have 10cm to play with
Tory, please correct me if I am off point, but is it an 'east coast' thing to say 'forward wheel drive'? I call it front wheel drive as opposed to rear wheel drive and not 'rearward wheel drive'. Thanks for the roof weight rating video. I plan on getting a Chevy Express extended wheelbase and putting a high roof on it. Keep up the good work.

@@MarcHernandez-x6o Some days! I won’t sugae coat it. There are good & bad days, I just 2 hours ago was parked in a lot and all of a sudden my car was surrounded by 6 cop cars and the guy two spots ahead of me was being arrested…. BUT I mean that could have happened if I was just there for groceries 😅 I think the overall feeling of it changes depending on if you are in a built out van or not. If you can make the van feel like a comfortable home or not as well. For me right now, I am on a floor with no amenities while I build 😅 It’s having me question things… not gonna lie LOL. BUT when my van was built out, I was happy as a clam. Still had cops knock sometimes, struggle finding parking spots to sleep sometimes, or cold planet fitness showers BUT there is a balance to that! Not having rent every month allows me to pursue my passion for video making with the money I save. Getting to see the world & travel and wake somewhere new everyday is exhilarating! And I have been to so many cool places! And I can always change it up & I LOVE THAT! It makes me feel alive & fufilled! So I love it even on the hard days. I think the key is finding joy in the bad times or learning to laugh about struggles. Like the cop car thing had me shaking at first but as soon as I knew I was safe… it’s a little funny & a good story 😅 haha

Erratum: Roof-top weight does not *LOWER* the center of gravity. It *RAISES* the CG. Carry on.
Adding this to a pinned note immediately! Yeah that was a dumb mix up 😅🫡 haha How on earth would it lower it lol, Appreciate you!

Really informative video Tory! Honestly, of all the van-builds I’ve been watching, yours is the only one to mention roof loading capacity. Kudos!
Great tips. You definitely have the perfect rack for your build.

Also consider the vehicles total weight capacity. If your car is carrying its full weight internally , you cannot put anything on the roof

Remeasuring and knowing your new height is useful if you drive under height restrictions often such as car parks.
