    Steve Irwin is the main reason I have so much love for, and interest in, animals today. I grew up absolutely addicted to the Crocodile Hunter. He showed us all the beauty, grace, and sheer power of animals both small and large, which most people will never be lucky enough to experience outside of television and internet videos, and you could tell in every episode, that he loved every single second of it. He adored animals, and did everything he could to protect them whilst teaching us at home who they really are, and how they should be treated. I still remember the episode when he was driving down the road, next to a field where a fire had started, and he almost started crying when he found a half-dead gecko that had be burned by the flames. He held it in his hands, with tears in his eyes, and you could literally feel his passion for these creatures. To sum it up, the world hasn't recovered from his passing, and I don't think it ever will.

      You know how most people say: "don't meet your heroes"?
      That's because they're human too.
      You don't know somebody until you meet them.
      This guy changed his preconceived notions fairly quickly [it sounds like] upon meeting Steve. That is admirable. Some people let first-impressions get in the way.
      Furthermore: in Australia, they teach safety-around-wildlife to a "T". There are a lot of dangerous critters out there, so the whole "he's an idiot" mentality, probably just came from the whole "don't stick your fingers in the outlet" & "this guy is the embodiment of what an Australian stereotype is" mentalities, so Ausies, were like: "uh... we're not all like 'Steve Erwin' and that guy is practically sticking his fingers in the outlet..."; like when a fat guy who is rude in a foreign country, turns out to be American, and then all us Americans (I'm an American by the way) who happen to be skinnier and polite: are like "oh-no... this is how the world sees us.... eek!!".
      But then if we found out that this fat guy [was fat because he] had a thyroid condition, and was edited to look ruder than he really was: our impressions would change.
      You've never met someone, until you've met someone! 👍?

      He was a teacher and a showman. He was funny and a goof at times.But he used that to do the teaching and that helped to make things stick. Unlike a lot of the boring old professors that have something to teach but can't make it stick in the students head.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Steve in November 2005 when he visited the National Park I worked in at the time. He was filming something on National Parks at the time. To this day he is one of the most humble and kindest people I have ever met. He walked across the visitor center just to shake my hand and introduce himself. When he died 10 months later I sobbed for hours. It was like losing a friend.

    All my father remembers of Steve is his antics. All I remember is the love of science he passed through the show. I was 14, a freshman in Highschool, when he died. My math teacher came into the room for his class almost in tears. We all learned that he had passed, and over half of the class burst into tears.
    What that man gave to children of my generation, I dont think anyone who took in a single word he said will ever forget him.
    Thank you for doing this interview. It is wonderful to hear how much Steve was passionate about what he was talking about, and that it wasn't just for show.

    That point when he talks about how Steve Irwin used the sense of danger in his interactions with animals to lure people in and then educate them made me want to cry. Guy had me absolutely ensnared by how dangerous everything he was doing was, and it was all to teach me. Which he did. Guess I was the idiot. GG steve.

      And Tony keep an eye on Robert, now 10 and a half. He is really coming along. He's co-presenting a Discovery Kids Show called Strange But True. Not surprisingly he does all the animal parts. Robert is also feeding Crocs. in the show along with Bindi and Terri. Bindi, yea sweet, loving, gentle kid fed Monte a ham still wearing her birthday corsage on her left wrist. Some will say foolish, some brave, I think self control. If she loves Monte she has to feed him and if that means coming within arms length of his mouth she can do that. Sweet kid the world needs more like her.

    • @t0mmymann
      @t0mmymann 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why oh why, does anyone need to come within arms length of one of the last surviving dinosaurs roaming the Earth that wants something bigger than a ham to stash in its larder? Have you any idea how many experienced, older and wiser zookeepers are killed all over the planet by the animals they have dedicated their lives to protecting and have spent years in their particular company? It's quite a surprising number and while I do stand by any and all comments I've made about Crocodile Hurter here and on other fora, my heart, ( hard as it may seem to you ) really does go out to his family, and the friends who were with him on the day. No need for any of the smart arses to tell me where to stick my feelings...I've met ye a thousand times over. Showmanship is one thing...

    • @madsandyalmond1838
      @madsandyalmond1838 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It takes money to do animal research and conservation, also the interest of a tremendous number of people, in order to get the politicians attention. Do you honestly think anyone would listen to a very quite, somewhat introverted teen girl who actually looks forward to spending a month each year in the bush 50 miles from the nearest town. But let that same girl feed Crocs, hold a koala while she is talking or wrap a 12 foot albino python around her shoulders for photographs and she has no trouble getting an audience. At least a part of walking in Dad's footsteps involves risking her life in order to get the message out. Showmanship yes, but without it no audience, no money, no conservation beyond the boundaries of her property. The fact she needs to be a showman is a reflection on us not on her.

When I found out he died I wasn't surprised or shocked, I think more then anything I was angry that he died doing what he loved and teaching everyone else, took me a few days to get over it but I just remember all the great stuff he left behind, its abit of a shame the media took over his family and that they aren't doing the best to carry his will on.

    Thank you, Destin. Steve inspired a lot of people to learn more about science, one of whom was my daughter, who is starting her second year in college soon. She still hasn't settled on whether she's going the zoology or astrophysics route, but you'd be surprised at how much overlap there is educationally speaking. Whichever way she goes, I'll always be grateful that she got to watch Steve at the height of his career and at just the right age when she was forming real ideas about herself as a person.

      ***** yeah, there's that generic american accent that I kind of consider "normal" in media, the more modern, non-southern one, (destin's accent doesn't quite fit it, but almost). But IRL, I don't notice Aussie accents at all, and anyone that sounds remotely American sounds way out there and completely weird.

    I grew up without a dad. One day my mom, my brothers, and I were watching TV and we came across the Crocodile Hunter. From that day forward, myself and my oldest brother were hooked. We learned how to properly identify and behave around animals. We'd get wild snakes, turtles, and other animals out of the road to prevent them from accidentally killing themselves. We even rescued an injured baby falcon that the mother had abandoned (brought it to an animal rehabilitation center). All the while when I see or interact with a wild animal, I think to myself "What would the Crocodile Hunter do?" I still do this after so many years. The day Steve died, I lost my role model. I lost the man who taught me so many things. It's cheesy, but Steve was the father I never had growing up. I've had several deaths in my family and I've only ever cried for two of them. My grandpa, and Steve Irwin.
    Rest in Peace Steve, the world misses you.

    What a situation to have to deal with. As a firefighter (now retired) I had to deal with the loss of three firefighters on my department when an incident went very badly one night. That was in 1974. Since then I joined another department and became the Hazardous Materials Specialist, the Training Officer, an Emergency Medical Technician, and so on. I still deal that loss, but I decided to give something back. I did my best to honor the memory of those three firefighters. Here is an example of the very same line of thinking. Also, it's a good thing that Steve Irwin's daughter and son are carrying on with their father's legacy. Godspeed, Steve.

    Hi, I want to thank you for making this video, it really touches me deeply to hear this story from an actual witness and someone who personnally knew Steve.
    I've never been someone who idolizes other people, I respect many people who are great at what they do but I would never get an autograph from someone, I don't see the point of it.
    When people ask me if I have someone who I really look up to I would say without pausing Steven Irwin. The man's passion about what he did, his selflessness, his drive, he didn't care what others thought of him as long as his message would get through, these were all the qualities I admire of him.
    I had one dream and it was to go to Australia Zoo and meet him just to shake his hand and thank him for what he was doing but that dream fell short on September 4th 2006...

    • @Jema
      @Jema 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      RC Marty I went to Australia Zoo before Steve died really hoping to meet him, unfortunately he was out being a wildlife warrior but I did get to meet Bindi and Terri. They would interact with the visitors and walk around in public areas. It was a very relaxed environment, you could tell they really wanted people to be excited about conservation.
      Bindi was very young at that time, around five or six. I went up to say hello, she was holding a plush unicorn. She said to me "Do you want to pet my unicorn friend?" and when I went to pat it she jumped towards me and said "Be CAREFUL! She BITES!"
      Don't give up your dream to visit Australia Zoo. Steve may not be there physically but his spirit embodies the place. It was his home and his life's work. He lives on in the zoo and in his family who still dedicate their life and passion to his legacy.
      Terri said of Steve after his death, "He changed the world by giving everyone the message that if you can reach out and touch and love and be with wildlife, you will forever be changed and you will want to make the world a better place. Because if everybody does something, we'll be okay. If we do nothing, we're in trouble. And he did more than anybody so I think we can all do something."

I'm in the US but it makes me want to go there just to experience his passion for conservation and see what you're talking about. He was truly a special man. Somehow it feels comforting that Dr. Seymour was with Steve when he died. He was with people who had the same kind of passion for wildlife that he had. And, as always, we learned something.
