yeah
It's Giorgos (Γιώργος) in Greek, just saying.
Paul Smyers tysm
Georgio could make some video courses and teach some life lessons. Great Guy!
he's not saying, "color, color, color." He's saying, "kala kala kala." That's "good" in Greek. He only said color after he heard you saying it.
LOL
Wow! Good observation.
No actually it could be colour, we refer to opal that doesnt have the shiny bits as having no colour, also known as potch opal. And opal that does have shiny bits as opal with colour, when you go mining with a few blokes youll find theyll start yelling "colour, colour" from the other side of the mine when they find something

Destin: "But there's also horizontal shafts at the bottom of the vertical shafts, right?"
George: "No, that's tunnels, not shafts."
xD
Definitions are important, the escape plan could reference tunnels and not shafts and if you've been using shafts all your life instead of tunnels, imagine the position you'd be in, fantastical once you are in "the know", but actually consider not knowing some things you know, and you'll start to see why people correct some people, it makes sense.
"Where you live, Alabama?"
"Yes..."
"Oh of course, that's why you don't know."
Jesus Christ, I almost messed myself. Clearly Destin was just catering to the assumption that he didn't have as a profound grasp on American English as most other English speaking people with that much of an accent, as to be polite but dude totally schooled him in a very funny yet polite way. Humor knows none, yet all languages. I remember when it was ok to use it to break the ice instead of nowadays where; yeah...
Actually, a vertical shaft has drives horizontally...lol Great that you hooked up with George...I've seen him working with quite a few miners. Opals form all over the world by the way...Aussie opals are unique in the world so far. :)
I'm a little late to the party, but shafts are vertical entry passages to tunnels or mines, tunnels are underground passageways (note the non specific degree of the direction the hole takes), and an Adit is a horizontal tunnel.

Georgie: "of course I'm getting smarter !"

I used to work with a guy like that at my first machining job. He was from Poland, he was in his late 60s, he had undergrad and graduate degrees in mechanical engineering, software engineering, and electrical engineering (all from communist Poland, so basically worthless here in the 80s), he ran a Fiat plant in Poland for 5 years, he ran a church hospital for a while, and he was a machinist for 16 years. He taught me basically everything I know, indirectly. He loved to talk and I loved to listen so much that when I was stuck on a machine setup, I had to weigh the tradeoff in my head every time, do I learn how to think things through by myself and potentially spend an hour on this, or do I go ask Tad, get the setup done in five minutes, and end up spending an hour talking about nuns 😂 sometimes when I hadn't seen him in a while, he'd wander over to my cell, drop the FILTHIEST joke you've ever heard, and then walk away giggling. Absolutely delightful character.
"but there's also horizontal shafts right?"
"that's called a tunnel."
**Horizontal, but yes, I loved that quote.
Particularly because as an engineer, I'm constantly correcting people calling columns [vertical members] as beams [horizontal members] and vice versa.

I've had Coober Pedy on my bucket list since I first heard about it, probably as a high school student. It's not just about pretty earrings, these are amazing, beautiful stones. They are SO beautiful that diamond merchants realized they could easily become more popular than diamonds, so they invented a myth that opals are bad luck. Their formation is fascinating and nothing else is really like the beauty of opals. If they weren't so fragile I would have one in my wedding ring. My husband, who had the ring designed for me, had a gorgeous Sri Lankan blue moon stone set into it instead.

Mining gems down a vertical shaft using a pickax... I thought it only existed inside Minecraft -___-
Thank you for watching "Smarter Every Day". You certainly need it...
Yes I do... I thought we abandoned pickax for centuries now, and drilled everything instead...
Thats like saying we replaced the hammer with a drill. A chisel with a buzz saw. A paintbrush for a paint roller. You get the idea.

You're from Alabama too?
When its vertical its a shaft. When its horizontal its a tunnel
Just found Smarter Every Day. You mined for opal and found treasure. I found out Great Courses is online and offers a month free through Great. Courses Plus. Learning is my treasure. Thank you!
While serving as a police officer in the region from 1996 to 2004 I mined opal in my spare time.
Gadassi became a valued and trusted friend and mentor who would no doubt remember my close friend, police colleague and mining mate and I as George and Mick.
As you no doubt learned for yourself from his remarks like 'yeah or what I put the rope there for?'
Gadassi's sense of humor is as dry as an outback summer and his intense, almost limitless energy is analogous to the explosives he uses to mine.
Have no doubt that Gadassi can swarm up a safety rope so fast he virtually pops out of a shaft like a cork.
On one occasion while prospecting old claims his generator broke down so Gadassi climbed a regular shaft freehand without the benefit of a safety rope.
When he did so that time he startled the heck out of Judy who was waiting at the top of the shaft he originally went down when he walked up behind her.
He is kind, generous, wise in the ways of life and men, as sharp as a razor blade and tough as the chisel on a jackhammer (as a young man he was a sergeant in the Greek army).
My mate George and I enjoyed the hospitality of Gadassi and his late wife Judie at their home in Coober Pedy on numerous occasions.
Gadassi helped George and I in many ways from advice on mining from safety to geology and guiding us with regard to pegging a claim. (The shaft on that one was 100 feet deep)
He also classed the occasional bit of opal for us and all the while generously imparted his almost limitless knowledge and understanding of all things related to opal.
You could not have had a better guide and mentor during your stay in Coober Pedy than Gadassi, he is a bit of a local legend among people who know gem quality in men when they encounter it.
(He wasn't joking about the ladies either and I assure you it is a subject he takes seriously indeed.)
If he is your friend, be certain that it is for life.
Woah! Thanks for that amazing insight!
"The rope is there so you can climb up! ...wow ...have you ever had to do that?"

At a beach or in soft sand, yes! Hard ground is a completely different thing. You either get it or not. The ground characteristics your digging through is quite varied and determines what's up..
@@sailingsolar Its a Minecraft joke...
@@issame37 Oh! Never played that. I came from a different time. Thanks
@@sailingsolar lol, well just so you know if you dig straigt down you might fall in some lava
@@MH-nx6cf Makes sense,,, if your gigging in Hawaii. I'm in Texas, you would hit oil.
Did you ever play, the game "Gig Dug"? I use to play that for quarters. Cheers.

This seems like a genuinely fun trip. All throughout, From the drill to the man to the picking, I'd work there.
This one has been a long time coming, I remember asking about if you were looking into this subject, what, two years ago now? Awesome.
NightHawkInLight love you channel
NightHawkInLight especially the melting bismuth one
Very interesting!!
You'll notice my hat is clean. This was filmed long ago.
Back when you were giving a speech at a University?
that guy has been mining gems so long he became one haha top bloke
You can still do it " why do think I've got the rope for" 😂😂😂 what a funny guy
This is the best Smarter Every Day episode!
I loved it when you cut to your wife trying on the earrings! That killed me!
"Why I put the rope for?" Best answer ever. :)
Still one of my favorite vids, keep up the good work!
This is my most favorite old man I have seen in my life.
Looks badass and him being wise makes him funny. Plus, Greece accent.
Perfect old man.
While I haven't used the Great Courses Plus myself, a lot of channels I watch advertise them and I know viewers there have had pretty good experiences with it.
I would love it if you gave it a shot with me and help me decide if they should be a long-term sponsor. Here's the link. Feel free to cancel before the one month free trial is over. ow.ly/OoWp302du3z
I was on the edge the last time they sponsored you, but this new video has sold me. You meet the strangest people and do the craziest things. So I'm signing up. Do me a solid and tell your wife, next time, okay?
I learned that lesson.
I'm sort of curious if The Great Courses is still relevant as a paid service. I don't doubt the quality of their content, but with the amount of free University level courses there are from places like MIT open courseware and Coursera, I'm just wondering if the value of their service makes it worthwhile over the free content.
5:23 funniest part! George is hilarious. I want to go to Australia just to meet him lol!
The great courses is actually a really cool service, my GF had access to that for one of her classes and we ended up watching a ton of cooking shows. One of the few video services worth paying for. This video was awesome lol
This man travelled the long way to Australia. There's something called the Pacific Ocean...
Pretty sure the map was just for illustration... would be weird to go the other way off the edge of the map and then come in from the other edge lol
@@ttorres well yeah.. obviously, because head fall off the earth that way.
