- Hunting Montana archery elk with Randy includes nine-time World Elk Calling Champion, Corey Jacobsen, in Randy's favorite Montana general tag area. The public land elk are pressured and weary, but you would not know that from this episode. Grouse and grizzlies add a bit of spice to this hunt. This hunt is Episode 3 from Season 4 of Fresh Tracks.

You guys are great hunters, doing a great job at promoting hunting in a positive light for all hunters. Hell, you may even melt the frozen hearts of an anti or two! As a fellow hunter I thank you for your service and your show.
Very kind of you to say that. Thanks for watching.
Qz
It's awesome to see how you guys are always smiling! Hunting with a positive person is the best way to get success! Its nice to see you don't have to always post videos of you killing you do and amazing job of showing what hunting is truly all about! You guys show how hard it is and to me watching videos where the "pros" don't succeed is the best way for me to learn!! Thanks for the awesome videos Randy!!
Thanks for watching. We have a blast when we are together. I am glad it comes through on video. Neither of us are too concerned about filling every tag, so it is pretty easy to enjoy it for what it is.
I can't imagine people in this day and age having that level of perspective, knowledge, and patience. Really enjoyed this video, not least because of the incredible scenes of Big Sky Country.
Thanks for watching. Hope it is a great season for you.
Randy Newberg, Hunter It will be - I'll be hunting paper targets in Oklahoma, in between pushups and formations, heh.
One of the cooler episodes with all the calling
As a fellow Idahoan, Corey has been on my radar for a while and I've learned a ton from his seminars and videos. I've always enjoyed watching your videos, Randy. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a ton. Corey is one of the finest hunters I've ever shared a camp with. And one of the most humble and generous with his time and information. Good luck this season.
Cory knows his stuff. I've known Cory for years. We grew up playing against each other in sports back in high school. Great guy
I have seen corey hunt with other guys and do the same thing. Pass on shooter elk , sometimes more than one. People call him an elk snob and dont like him for it. I think he truly loves the hunt and the enounters and does not want to end the hunt early. Cant hate a guy for that. There is only one september a year. Not to mention he is one of the best so why would he not think he would get another chance. Plus he usually hunts more than one state . why just shoot them just to shoot them when you can shoot the one your after another day. Great video.
He's a great guy. If I could call them in as good as Corey can, I would pass some of them, also.
I being a Meat Hunter would shoot what is legal. A young Cow is damn good eating. So is a 400 pound Calf come to think about it. LOL
If u think there’s trophy game patience is the main key me I lack patience at times I shot animals an there was bigger ones with it. I was like should of waited
Loved the video! It's nice to see that even the pro's have hunts where no animals are harvested and still have a great time!
Thanks for watching. As you know, filling tags in not the means by which success if measured in the hunt. Best to you this season.
Randy, you guys rock!! Always enjoy your hunts even when you don't punch your tags. Keep on keeping on, looking forward to your next adventure.
Thank you. And thanks for watching,
Great channel we in Russia love watching and learning a lot! Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Glad you like it.
Beautiful hunt. Fun to see a Minnesotan with such passion for the mountain. I think that's all that is missing in MN.
Thanks for watching. I still have not gotten rid of my walleye and whitetail problems. Thanks for watching.
Well said!
One of my favorite of your videos....thanks so much
Thanks for watching.
The most fantastic Elk Hunt I have ever watched... I have been where you guys were and know very well... Allot of things play into a Elk Archery Hunt.. This video is Epic!
Thanks for watching. Good luck next time you hunt there.
What amazes me is that normally hunting videos would have a horrible like-dislike ratio yours is stunning! Keep it up
Thanks and thanks for watching. Best of luck.
Fantastic video. Thanks for taking us along... especially us Midwest guys who won't be going West this fall.
Thanks for watching. I hope you make it west next season.
wow! Great video! It makes me feel like I'm out there with you guys! What a rush!! I Thank you guys for sharing the experience!!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Awesome Video Randy!
It not always about the killing that makes for a successful hunt as this video shows. Thanks for a great video.
For sure. And that is a good thing, given how often I leave with my tag still in my pocket. Best of luck this season.
Great Episode!! Its almost time!!
Thank you. Yeah, the bulls are rubbing velvet and will soon be testing their vocal chords. Good luck this season.
Some times we not as good as we think, this ain't no problem if ya hunt for antlers . I have never passed on a perfect shot , I look at it as this is what I was gifted to eat. Thanks grandfather. I bet the first one would have tasted better than a bucket full of memories. We have shot a few biggins. The oldest one was the first tough hamburger I ever had. We ended up making the whole thing into quadruple ground hamburger jerky. Every one got jerky for Christmas . C
Awesome video. Can't wait for elk season here in Colorado. THANKS
My two favorite elk hunters to watch are together hunting!!! I am a UEH grad so I love to see Corey elk hunt. I always learn so much. Btw, I would have shot that first bull, but I just want to get a bull with my bow period.
Thanks for watching. I would have shot that bull, too. I think Corey realizes he should have shot that bull. But, sometimes the close calls are what create the best memories.
Wow Cory & Randy My favorite Hunters!! what a privladge to have the two together!! P.S My name is Cory also ;)
Thank you for all your amazing videos. I can't wait to get out next season for elk and pronghorn.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind comments.
Randy, Thanks for your due diligence to teach us about hunting elk. would love to meet you some day. mr. Kim
awsome video again Randy.
You two are just like me, probably because I was born & raised in Montana & grew up about like you boys.
I did the same thing last year. Didn't have time to range, thought it was 50 yards but it was 56. Arrow went right under his belly. Still an amazing experience though.
It happens. I had it happen on a mule deer this year. Right underneath him. Ugggh!
great video once again. You should do more hunting with him in the future. That dude knows how to hunt even if he didn't fill his tag.
We will be doing just that. We applied for tags in NM for this season and we drew our first choice. Hope it works out well.
Another great video thanks for sharing
Thank you.
Great Vid Cory and Ranch!
WOW, when he bugled at about 4:15 I could have sworn that was NOT the bull calling but you can see him do it. REALITY CHECK: sometimes a bull sounds as bad as a hunter with a tooter horn bugle.
Funny you say that. When I heard it bugle, from further up the hill, I thought we had called in another hunter. As you say, goes to show that elk don't always sound like world champion callers. Good luck this season.
Another amazing video, long time fan.
Thanks for watching.
Question of the Day: How and where did Corey get that cover for his Bugle!? (I just spent an afternoon cutting up an old pair of army ACU fatigues and pasting them to mine....works, but I'm now concerned with scent....I shouldn't have used Elmers paste deng it!!)
He took a shirt sleeve off his Sitka Gear. I asked him to get me one and he asked me to send him a shirt as the raw material. Thanks for watching.
GREAT VIDEO!!
Love all ur videos randy
Thank you and thanks for watching. Hope you have a great season ahead.
awesome video! love all of them keep it up
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. I hope you have a great season ahead.
Randy what head do you use to shoot the grouse with?
Great show thanks
Thanks for watching.
Awesome episode. I need to get out more.
Thanks. Yes, get out all you can. Some day we will all be stuck in the chair.
Can you whip the camera out next time you're in the kitchen? What are your best grouse recipes?
I get a lot of requests for that. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for watching.
Hey Randy, I'm going back to the Bob this September. Was wondering, what make is your bino harness? I looks really low profile and snug. Thanks.
www.FHFGear.com Good luck.
Awsome shows!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Great videos
So would you hunt an area like this in rifle season? I know the timber and elk migrating off could be factors for rifle hunting.
Not in MT rifle season. By then, the bulls are headed off to their sanctuary areas. The cows and young bulls might still be in these spots, but not the mature bulls. I would look for places further from roads, higher up, in the direction of where they will be migrating as winter approaches. Good luck.
Great video
Mr. Newberg, awesome channel. If your ever near Livingston mt I could sure use your help filling my elk tag. You make it look easy. I could also help you with a video on how not to hunt elk. Millions of acres to hunt on and still working to fill that first tag.
Most of these videos are lessons learned from doing things wrong. I live in Bozeman, just over the hill. Hope you get that first elk. Best of luck.
Keep doing what you do Randy! Great video! Did you have another liver flair up at the end?
It was a "Flair up" most of the season. And this year is no better. A bit worried as he head out for another season, given it is causing me some fits right now. Fingers crossed. Thanks for asking and thanks for watching.
Well for me i see so few shooter elks in range I would of dropped him, however I can respect someone who can wait for the elk they want. enjoy the show.
hey Randy great video as always, as an Idaho resident myself I wanted to ask what your opinion is of Idaho. I haven't seen any Idaho hunts on your show, what's an out of state hunters perspective?
Only because ID is the last state to draw tags and by then we usually have the tags we need. I will be deer hunting ID this year and I am excited to do so.
Randy Newberg, Hunter awesome! best of luck to y'all and maybe I'll run into you out in the hills!
Holy shit this elk caller guy is good lol
Corey is the nine-time World Champion Elk Caller. He is a good guy to have on your team.
Seems how Corey is that badass being a 9 time champ...I bet his services are not cheap. Be it for a video or guide hunting.
Free for me. He is the best archery elk hunter I've ever hunted with.
@@Fresh_Tracks makes perfect sense. For Corey to be able to use your platform as being a guide hunter only promotes himself with his business. Nothing like scratching each other's backs while having good company.
Hey Randy, Great episode! Just goes to show that you can have a great time walking away with tag soup, i know ive done it many of times :D You show off the bear spray at one point and time but I'm curious, do you take a sidearm with you and if so which is your preference? I hunt the same area quite often and my 357 always comes with as you never really know what can happen. Hope you have some great hunts this year from a fellow bozemanite!
I don't take a sidearm. It is legal in MT, but having had two close encounters with G-bears, it became obvious that it happens so fast, the only thing a handgun could help me with would be to put myself out of my misery. Good luck this season.
Great hunt! How do you like that Montana Black Gold sight?
Love it. If only I was as capable as the sight. Thanks for watching.
Randy what broadheads are you shooting for elk?
Just asked him on Instagram recently. He replied back with Bone Broadheads.
@3:12 the best translate ever!!!!hahaha
Do you ever get nervous going through that thick stuff in grizz country?
i understood his grouse addiction before he even said minnesota
Looks like ol Casey Butler has you on the right track!!! Subbing!! Nice vid Randy!!!
Casey is a great help.
I always think when i get in a rush "Why am I in a hurry to blow this hunt"
A well placed rock and a fire pit makes for the best chicken dinner at 10,000 feet, good times
KEEP PASSING THEM TINY ONES FOR LIL GUYS LIKE MYSELF !!!!!!!!!
He's crazy. Wish I would have been able to get down there earlier and shot that thing.
What kind of bow was Corey using ?
That's a Prime, not sure of the model but probably a Rize or Rival.
Yup, Prime.
Randy...good stuff. Corey loves to hunt in "pre-rut", was this the case for your Montana hunt? What dates in Sept. were you guys hunting? Am curious as to "when" you archery hunted in relationship to "equinox" and "moon phases"? And I think watching U guys is better than Netflix...keep up the good work and sacrifice, it feeds this weekend "want to be".
This was late September, so it was into the peak rut. I'm not sure what the moon phase was. I really don't pay any attention to moon phase, as if I have a tag, I'm hunting, no matter the moon. Best of luck to you.
Been watching Corey with born and raised outdoors nice guy .p.s just subbed
Those are all great guys.
Good gravy, my pants would turn a darker shade of brown if I saw that griz.
what pack is Corey using?
Exo Mountain Gear...not sure on the size but it looks like the 3500. I have this pack and it is great. Carried 1 elk, 2 deer, and an antelope its first year.
Yup...there is quite a bit of adjustment back there. They actually just put out a youtube video on making adjustments and fitting the pack.
+RngrfromtheMtns ..
thanks. guess I better give Mystery Ranch a look as well. after all we are on Randy's Channel right now :)
Ha yeah they make a solid pack and their new system is supposed to be much lighter than the previous on making them even better
Exo Mountain. I have a 2015 5500 and it is a fantastic pack. Carries weight very well. Not much in the way of organization though which can be an issue for some folks.
where is a good spot to hunt in
Montana
Just pass the lake On the left side of the big mountain past the hill side field.
Sounds like you had a great time. For me, though, I never pass up a legal animal. Opportunities are too hard to come by, and you may not get another.
True. Lesson learned, for sure. Thanks for watching.
What I meant to say is that I'm just not good enough at elk hunting to let any opportunities pass. Big antlers are a bonus, but I'm trying to put meat on the table. It's great to learn from experts like you and Corey, though. Thanks again.
This is luis and I am hunting and Delaware very much but I like to go hunting and Colorado went you to very much like
Is this Grizzly Basin in the Swan Mountains?
Nope
Hi Randy, I hope that in Russia be allowed to hunt with a bow . Great video
I hope so. It is much fun and adds a great challenge. Thanks for watching.
15-20 dollar grouse if you blow an arrow 😂
#WorthIt
great hunt..if you wanna real trofee you have to let the small ones go..:)
Thanks for watching.
Randy you should try to get a mule deer
What diaphragm was Corey using? Looks like a Ricky mountain mistress elk
Not sure, but I can assure you it is from Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls.
Ok thanks strange that he chose a Sitka tube though
Max Sanchez It is just a Sitka pattern on the bugle tube cover. The tube is from Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls. Wait until you see the new covers he and I used on our bugle tubes last week.
Спасибо, красиво.
First Randy says this place is not hunted much then Cory comes RIGHT back and says these Elk are Pressured a lot and hunted a lot thus Timid to calling. Which is it boys? Get you're Story straight. Lol
Stay outta my spot, Newberg.
That spot belongs to the Grizzly Bears. ;) Thanks for watching.
That is ridiculous. That was a shooter by any standard. I suppose you could make a case for the first day, but I like nothing better than to shoot a good one on the first day! Then you go back to camp eat some backstrap or Grouse, maybe drink a couple of beers, work on butchering, and think about what you're going to do the rest of the week. Maybe go fishing!
Randy was randy for grouse
I'm always "Randi for grouse," even if elk are bugling.
If grouse had horns he would never hunt anything else
That was a big foot 🦶 not a grizzly
'Squatch reportings are a regular occurrence in this part of Montana ;).
Well hell i might have to shoot one an be world famous I need 🦌 an 🍌 to bait for one 😂
I'll mildly disagree w/ you, I'much rather hunt grouse behind a good setter, I grew up with 'em. I swear I hunt grouse to work w/ the dog, that's the source of my addiction. ;)
No disagreement here. When I had retrievers, my waterfowl hunting was all about the dogs and their retrieving.
@@Fresh_Tracks: I'll admit to one more reason for the addiction; ruffed grouse beats the tar out of any other bird for flavor!
So no elk?!
This guy Corey comes across as a smartarse , don't like him at all . You're cool though Randy .
Corey is a super fun guy. You never know when he is serious or joking, which makes it that much more fun. I have a handful of great friends who are appreciative of life's blessings and Corey is among the handful I speak of.
