    I wish I had found you guys 9 years ago. That is when I moved to Arizona and started hunting elk. I only apply for Any Elk or Anterless Elk because I want the meat and enjoy hunting. If I apply for a bull tag and don't get drawn, then no hunting. I am still trying to figure out which bull that is responding to my calls has cows with him so I can find the cows. I have been successful 3 times but I attribute mostly to luck now that I have seen your video and listened to your podcast. I feel I will be a better elk hunter now. Thank you. By the way, I joined the Rock Mountain Elk Foundation as a member. I didn't know about it until listening to you guys.

    Go as long as the topic requires. People that talk really slow, and repeat there selves waste time but you guys do a great job keep it up. The people who only want a 1 hour show can always fast forward. Bluetooth earbuds have created a ton more time in my day for content.

    Would you guys consider having a big dry erase board behind you and draw certain situations when talking about set ups etc etc. Some people are more visual learners and if its drawn perhaps it might help to see exactly what your talking about. Like myself instead of reading the book I wait for the movie. Thanks

    Good video, I have hunted in a number of areas and everyone caters to a different calling situation. I agree with everything you said, I told a friend two years ago that all I do is aggressively bugle and shot a bull last years with nothing but cow calls so had to eat my words and admit one size does not fit all, even when you are confident with an approach.

    Love the thoughts gentlemen. I appreciate the recognition of others styles and approaches. I think at the end of the day gaining as much knowledge as you can and putting it to use in the field through trial and error until you find the style that works for you is the point. That said, my experience has drawn me closer to Corey's approach in using emotion and 'getting the last word' aggressively in my calling. The challenge I have run into in some of the areas I hunt, is that dudes have run through pumping their hoochie mama over and over making some bulls a bit call shy... How do you suggest maintaining aggression while utilizing calls with call shy elk? Also, another question... has your aggression ever intimidated another bull into shutting up? If so, any insight on what causes that?

      Update. ... New calls got here. They are awesome. The easiest I have ever had. They are softer too. The top feels a little strange but these don't hardly take any air to make a sound. And if you blow really hard they are just louder and make different sound. But by far the best ones I have ever had.

    How do I start bugling in late August early early rut in Eastern Oregon? Do I just locate bugle or do I bugle at all?

  • @glend4704
    @glend4704 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Calling and hearing elk bugle is what archery hunting elk is all about to me!! I wouldn’t archery hunt elk if they didn’t bulge, and I wouldn’t hunt spring gobblers if they didn’t gobble. I would rather shoot a raghorn that’s screaming his head off responding to my calls than shoot a 370” bull that is silent. It’s like someone archery hunting elk over a water hole during the rut… why waste your tag on that ??

  • @garymason1916
    @garymason1916 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Puzzling to me as a life-long elk hunter why so many videos show the hunter calling with a bugle or cow call after the animal after the shot.

    • @leebonfiglio
      @leebonfiglio ปีที่แล้ว

      That's to try and slow the animal down and keep them from traveling too far after the shot. When an elk is shot they don't know what just happened and a few calls can distract them enough to get another shot or at least slow them down.

    • @garymason1916
      @garymason1916 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but I remain unconvinced of this tactic as elk try to get away from the situation so calling is a waste of time. Make the shot count in a vital area for best results and a clean kill is optimal.

    • @jackdundon2261
      @jackdundon2261 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chuck was right on everything, watching a movie, is not real life. Bugle to locate, then go soft! (Sometimes trophy bulls get stupid-but not often).

    • @glend4704
      @glend4704 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you want to hunt silent bulls? Or slip in on them? I would rather kill a raghorn that’s screaming his head off coming in to my calling than a 370” bull that isn’t making a peep. It’s like people that sit water holes for archery elk, why even hunt them during the rut If that’s how you’re going to hunt them?? BORING

  • @BCencounters
    @BCencounters 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Please give scenarios and draw them out. And talk about the different calling techniques you would use for the different situations. Walk through a few and actually use your call so we can hear the sound.

  • @troywesterbur706
    @troywesterbur706 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks again for another great pod cast. I am that guy that walks into a bar and some guy wants to fight. I dont have to say anything. I guess that makes me the herd bull and the satellite bulls are challenging me. I dont know what it is but it has always been that way. Needless to say I dont go to the bar. I guess I just dont want the trouble. I have heard that the big 400's are that way too. They stay away from the bar. Does that sound true.

    • @jackdundon2261
      @jackdundon2261 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been 2 years no reply, I'll give you my two cents worth if you're interested. If you think about it, some men love to fight, those men usually weed themselves out of society pretty quick, some are dead, some are in jail. bull elk are the same way the ones that like to fight run into the setups and get killed by hunters or other predators or cougars or whatever.
      But my mentor taught me when I was learning about elk hunting, while, not all men want to fight, all men or nearly all men want to help a baby if a baby's in distress, if you hear a baby crying you want to go check it out. Elk are the same way, if a big bull elk hears a baby calf crying, his natural instinct is, he wants to help that baby. So in the reality of things you better off boogle less and calf-call more to pull the big bulls in.
      Personally I like to use my bugle to locate the bull and then use my cow calls to pull them in and kill him. That's just my two cents worth maybe have a thought of your own?

    • @troywesterbur706
      @troywesterbur706 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackdundon2261 I agree. I have found that bulls like their space. It's like a man and his garage. He goes off by himself and all is right in his world. The ones that run off to the bar in groups end up in trouble. The man offers help when needed and joins the group when necessary. The biggest bulls I have seen where always alone with a few exceptions. There are herds that never split up and stay in the same spot year round. Private land, safe from hunters. Or national parks. I have found that solitary bull needs an ambush hunt. Patterned like a white tail.

    I know Chuck Adams is a great hunter but I agree with Corey and disagree with CA I get heard bulls to answer a lot and even some of them go into an almost frenzy answering me. Also on a hunt in Nevada a couple years ago I was working a giant herd bull with multiple cows and two satallite bulls. I actually called the herd bull away from his cows and came close to 300 yards to my shooter. One thing though once he left his cows he did shut up and came in silent. I think the reason he shut up was he didn't want the Satallite bulls to know he had abandoned his cows. I realizer this is hard to believe but it did happen. I'm sorry I can't say what call I was using and how I was doing it. BTW C A has been saying this for years and years.

      I agree and disagree. We all have the 'believe it or not' stories. But as the generalization, chuck is right. Roosevelt's in western oregon are not nearly as talkative as rocky's in eastern oregon.
