Hiking the Art Loeb Trail: Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain

- After a trip to the summit of Sam Knob earlier in the day, Mike is hiking the Art Loeb Trail to Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain, in the Pisgah National Forest.

This hike is located in Western North Carolina. This is some of my favorite North Carolina hiking and in my opinion, some of the best hiking near Asheville.
From the trailhead parking lot, at the end of the road off of mile 420 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Art Loeb Spur Trail travels steeply uphill, before reaching the top of the ridge and intersecting with the Art Loeb Trail proper. Just before the intersection is a little rock outcropping with a beautiful view, perfect for a quick stop for a drink and a snack. This area features some of the best views on the Art Loeb Trail.
At the intersection, a left on the Art Loeb Trail heads towards the summit of Black Balsam Knob, at just over 6,200 feet. Black Balsam Knob is the high point of the hike, as the summit of Tennent Mountain, another half mile or so past Black Balsam Knob sits around 6,040 feet.

The views are truly awesome... You can literally see for days (about 70 miles) when conditions are clear! I'm glad to be getting some adventures up on TH-cam again... Those views are endless, especially on a day like I had, when the weather was absolutely perfect! I was thinking about doing the Art Loeb as a warmup for the Foothills Trail, but the bear cans were one of the things that made me reconsider. I decided to just do the day hike this time. Hi Mike I didn't see the notification on this from days ago! It was such a beautiful trail and I loved where you sat the first time, the views were stunning there and I think you said there were excellent campsites nearby but that you need bear cannisters ? so I'm guessing that bears are roaming around here ? I think I would be too scared to do this hike 🤭 The second place where you sat where the people spoke to you was also amazing with great views and I agreed with you about the colours here, the greens and reds against the blue sky was gorgeous. This was so so lovely :)~ Anna 👍
Hi Anna! No worries... I'm always glad to hear from you! There are, indeed, bears in this general area 🐻 There were enough people around during the day, though, that I thought it very unlikely I'd see one. For me, the views were worth the risk 😂 Thanks for taking the time to follow along!
Beautiful! You were blessed to have this moment in time with such perfect weather. Didn't know you had to have a bear canister in this area. How was the water situation? That area past the summit is where it is at!
Indeed! From what I understand, there was historically some aggressive bear activity in the Shining Rock Wilderness. It was one of the things that made me reconsider doing the whole Art Loeb on this trip (not the bears -- just the logistics of renting a bear can). I will definitely be back, though!
I did not see any water at all while I was out there. I've read there's a piped spring around the parking lot somewhere.

Much appreciated! Yea, when you're looking at the full Art Loeb Trail, having to carry bear cans and a fair amount of water over that elevation gain definitely adds another element of challenge you have to account for!
@@OutOnTrail how are the water sources around that area? Do they dry up quickly? I tend to always start my hikes with full packs of water and don't always trust having a water source.
@@michael_budda There are only a few reliable water sources along the Art Loeb Trail. I didn't see any water at all along the stretch I hiked. I'd say this is one (and the Art Loeb is short enough) where you'd probably want to plan your water stops ahead of time, as opposed to winging it.
