The Funchal Cable Car, also known as the Teleferico do Funchal, takes you to the hilltop suburb of Monte. The ride takes around 15 minutes. It feels modern and safe. The cars are enclosed, with windows allowing you to take in the views of the ocean, orange tile rooftops, and lush green gardens.
In Monte, you'll find a botanic garden and a picturesque church. You'll also find the sledges of Monte and their drivers, the Carreiros do Monte. Powered by two carreiros, the sledges reach speeds of around 25 miles per hour. While they were used as transportation for locals in the 19th century, they are now mostly a tourist attraction and a fun option for getting (part of the way) back to Funchal.
