  • Denise Dagan with the Stanford Parkinson's Community Outreach Program explains that exercise is crucial for the health and mobility of people with Parkinson's Disease (PD) but apathy (the loss of interest in doing anything) prevents some people with PD from exercising.
Apathy is a symptom of PD, and it can be difficult to overcome. A medication adjustment can help, including the addition of an antidepressant (especially bupropion), along with these lifestyle changes:
Nobody likes to be told what to do, but they might exercise WITH you. Invite them to do something fun and physically active together!
Encourage them to be physically active with friends, or join a PD exercise class. You're more likely to show up if someone is waiting for you, social interaction improves mood and maintains cognitive wellness - and exercising together is more fun!
People are more likely to get exercise if it is part of a daily routine. Plan to go for a walk or do some physical activity at about the same time every day.
Overcome obstacles before they stop you from exercising. Put on your athletic wear or walking shoes in the morning, so you don't have change before doing something active.
