      That's all I do as well. Takes 2 mins. Then again I usually replace the rotors every time anyways. Brake job for front is like $150 every 2 years and $120 for the rear every 4 years so to me no big deal saving $100. Or less. If it was every 3 months that would be a different story.

  • @andrewbaxter9395

    The outer ridge on the rotor is brittle and chips off with a gentle hammer tap. As long as the rotor has sufficient thickness it’s not an issue. Quiet brakes for a couple of minutes work and zero cost 😊

      My BMW dealer (Charlottesville, VA) would not pass our car during the state inspection, despite the 4-5 mm of good pad depth left, due to that little edge of rust, where the pad doesn't touch the rotor. Said that VA DMV requires "full coverage", but I've always seen a thin band of rust on the outer edge and inner edge, at the limit of the pad dimensions. I was not impressed.

    I learned that every screw matters even the tiny ones that screw into the rotor! I didn’t put the 1 tiny hex screw back in each rotor and braking at 50 plus shook my steering wheel. And every month I had to keep tightening my lug nuts cuz the vibration from rotors loosen it up!
    Learned my lesson

    • @derekgardin1512
      @derekgardin1512 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That tiny screw is not necessary. It's mainly used to hold the rotor on during assembly in the factory. Many times they're so rusted in that thy snap they head off when trying to remove which makes the hole useless. I typically never replace the screw and makes no difference. The wheel has 4 or 5 bolts holding it on that holds the rotor firmly in place.

    • @jessewynne8193
      @jessewynne8193 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@derekgardin1512 that’s what I thought also but must do something cuz since putting each hex screw back in the two front rotors having to retighten my lug nuts every month or so has stopped and in turn stopped the shaking steering wheel/dash at hard braking like getting off short exit ramps from highway.
      That’s how I knew it was time to retighten the lug nuts again. lol
      It was strange cuz if I had to do a hard brake it was fine for couple weeks after the brake/rotor replacement job. And also stop after tightening the lug nuts.
      I have no vibrations at any speed like a off balanced wheel or any shaking from braking as long as those tiny screws are in rotors then my lug nuts stay tight

    Not everything is perfect! I have done many, many brake jobs on my cars over the years (I'm 70 years old). I have never paid to have the brakes replaced, it is just too easy to do them yourself. I recently purchased a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma. The previous owner had oversized tires on it. I switched the tires and got a front end alignment. The toe-in did not even register on the machine is was so far off. I still had a wobble when braking (probably caused by being out of alignment and having oversized tire), so I replace the brakes with Akebono brake pads and turned the rotors (only 60,000 mile on the truck). I have never used the Akebono brand before so I though I would give them a try. They brake just fine. But I have to say I have never had brakes squeak before I used Akebono. It is probably not the fault of the brake pads, but just a light touch to the brakes as I brake in front of my house and the dog knows I am home. I will probably take the rotors off and rough them up with 100 grit sand paper and see if the pads will re-seat onto the rotor with out squealing.

    i've had pad lining that is stuck on to the backing plate at a slightly different place than another pad, and you go to change it again years later, now the new pads ride higher and rub right into that rusted area. I always get new rotors as a rule of thumb.

  • @derekgardin1512
    @derekgardin1512 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yep those locks are useless. If a thief really wants em they will still get it off. I always cringe when I see someone turning a rotor jn a modern car. Most cars you can buy rotors for $50/ea. Instead of paying ½hour labor for them to be machined (which will be $60-70 anyway) may as well get new ones. As scotty eluded to, when you turn them and they get thinner, they're more susceptible to warping as there's less volume of metal to dissipate heat. Don't waste money turning rotors.
