One of my favorite aspects of HWM is the interplay between the 2 guitarists Chris Wollard and Chuck Ragan, both of whom sing, and the bass. Oftentimes all 3 are doing something different from each other but complementary. Their earlier records were much more raw and had a more experimental flair. One of my favorite bands of all time.
I still remember buying my first HWM CD. I was at the record store debating between The Get Up Kids 'Something to Write Home About' and Hot Water's 'Moonpies for Misfits' EP. I decided to save a few bucks and get the EP. The next day I went back to the record store and bought all three studio albums and two splits. I don't think I took those out of my CD changer until MP3 became a thing.
I first heard them on the epitap comps that we would get for free at the local record store threshold music. It's been gone for 20 years but man every so often you would get a freebie in the free bin full of posters and stickers....... Flight in a crash was the first for me 🤙
I discovered Hot Water Music in a used CD store in Greensboro, NC. They were playing "A Flight and a Crash" (which was new at the time) over the speakers. I asked what it was and then bought all of the HWM CDs they had released up to that point. Have kept up with them since then and have seen them a couple of times live. Incredible band.
Fuel for the Hate Game changed my life. I had already been in the emo punk scene for a while, but something about that album hit me hard. Right time, right place.
Yes!! I was waiting for this one!! Jason is freaking incredible! He has so many amazing bass lines I don't think I can pick a favorite. They have two singers, Chuck and Chris.
I opened up for HWM at the Hardback Cafe around 95/96. Other band on the bill was The Shade. It was their last gig. That was the first time ever hearing of HWM. They knew how to work the crowd.
This band changed my life and musical trajectory back in high school and continue to be a source of inspiration to this day. Caution is my favourite album of theirs, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Welcome to HWM!
Hot Water Music has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them when they came out in the 90's, I'd never heard a band that sounded like them musically and then the dual gruff vocals was just a bonus
Fell in love with this band in 2002 when I was 14. From Chuck and Chris’ dancing guitar parts, to Jason’s rolling base lines, and George’s ability to keep it all moving together. I play guitar, so I appreciate watching this video and your ability to point out all the fills I’ve always listened to and never truly heard.
You can even go all the way back to the 90's with stuff like No Division and Fuel for the Hate Game and hear GENIUS level bass and, quite frankly, rhythm section as a whole. IMO, drums and bass make HWM what it is, and I'm a HUGE Chuck Ragan fan, seen him live solo/Revival Tour shows than HWM. Their catalog is deep, and expansive, and SUPER intersting.
Anyone else super jealous this is the first time he's hearing HWM and the only way is up from here? I'd love to rediscover them but I've been a fan for 20+ years :) this is one of my favourite tracks!
This was absolutely amazing! Gunna have to check them out more, glad you spoke on the bass and vocals , a lot of time Matthew song is written and the bass then the vocals write around the bass, my singer does that all the time definitely heard some Geddy fills on here! Thanks for this Lowend Fam!!
Caution is one of my all time favorite albums. Their split EP with Alkaline Trio is another one I loved. You should check some of Danny's songs with Alk3. He's an underrated lyricist with a cool voice, and some tasty bass playing.
one of the greatest arrangements of creative musicians ever. Each of them are incredibly creative and talented and when they come together, they've orchestrated some of the best music I've ever heard, and I'm so glad you finally did one of their songs! I hope you do more - they're so hard not to love!
The Living End is an Australia Punk Pop band with a double bass player. Second Solution would be the best react video. Living End had #1 hits with a pure punk first album. They then went on to become a household name in Australia, our equivalent of Green Day / Blink 182.
They have two main singers, Chuck Ragan is one of them and Chris Wollard is the other. Cool track, Jason is definitely an awesome and underrated bassist
My understanding is that Chris from Flatliners tours with the band and sings on a track on the latest album, but Wollard does sing on the latest album as well, he just no longer tours with them. Chris from Flatliners is awesome.🤘
@@teflon1978 yep, thats correct. Chris Flatliners had such huge shoes to fill and he's doing a brilliant job. He really does the band and Wollard justice.
The rhythm section of this band is great and you can hear the jazz playing background. Then add 2 singing guitarists that can each songwrite and you have an outstanding band.
you don't know me, BUT I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I and a few others over the months lol. With the first two Hot Water Music albums Fuel For the Hate Game and Forever and Counting got me playing bass in 1999. I'm 46 years old and I feel like I've just grown up with this band. I ALWAYS go back to these guys and Dillinger Four.
Since you loved this song, I thought I’d suggest The Draft “Alive or Dead”. Hot Water Music has 2 guitarist vocalists songwriters and when 1 of them focused on solo stuff, the other 3 members of the band did a side project called The Draft. “Drag My Body” is Chuck singing, while with The Draft song I suggested you will get the other songwriter of Hot Water Music in Chris, while still getting Jason Black’s great bass work. Cheers.
I got inspired to play bass because of HWM and RATM. I believe I was first introduced to a Music Man bass because of Jason Black, playing their HWM song called Trademark - check this one and see how cool that sounds to someone starting to play bass. Later I realized Tim Commerford used it a lot with RATM as well. All this happened around 1999. In 2011 I managed to get myself my Sting Ray 4 with maple neck because of these guys and I've been playing it ever since. Heck, one day I might get myself a G&L Asat bass too!
I’m so glad you enjoyed that! Buckle up friend…it’s just hit after hit with these guys. Their entire catalog is pretty much in this same vein, in varying stages of rawness
I've been listening to them since around 1999, and I swear you can hear them grow album by album. It was always there, they just kinda got all together as they went.
Yep! Had a conversation with J when they played in Minneapolis years back. It blew my mind talking with him, i walked away with a mental list of some great music and a great convo about gear and stuff. It was awesome.
I just saw these guys live the other night and this was a real crowd pleaser. The whole band was incredibly tight. I specifically remember Jason Black played that fill at 5:00 and he made it look like a piece of cake, it seemed so effortless for him
I have seen these guys live more times than I can count… each member is so talented. For another great bass lick check out Free Radio Gainesville by HWM
Growing up with skate punk, I didn't get these guys' hype. The older I got, the more I was like... Holy shit I've been missing out. This song is brilliant and your coverage of this song is brilliant.
Part of the reason I love this series is because I'm also hearing stuff I haven't heard as an avid punk music fan. Hearing Drag my Body as a punk fan and musician was absolutely next level.
I love this band so much!! Glad you're discovering them! Chuck Ragan is so powerful vocally and an amazing songwriter. His folk solo stuff is great too!
Thanks! Love that band since the first time I've heard them on 90s. Just discovered your channel and I can't stop seeing your videos. Cheers from Spain!
I'm subbed and love that you love this band now! I played this album for my death metal friend a few years back and it changed him forever. Congrats on 100K btw!
The first time I heard chuck growl "raise your voice in swells" in the song turnstile I was hooked. Check out Rock Singer it has an awesome base riff and chuck vocals.
Your takedowns of these songs are SO spot on! It gives me extra goosebumps man. By the way 10000 days is building up being my favorite album. It’s pretty incredible!
You can feel the chemistry between all of them and how Jason and George are keeping them together. You cannot skip the bass line!! He isn't just simply playing a basic rhythmic bass sound like you can hear in some punk bands, it's groovy, melodic and you cannot help noticing it! That's why I've always loved them since day one. Really appreciate this video!
chucks voice is a legend in its own right. hwm has absolutely the best rhythm section and song writing and watching them live you'd never expect the energy that chuck throws out.
I was just cruising through the comments to see if anyone had requested 88 Fingers Louie! I’ve been listening to them the last few days to try and see if there’s a better bass line than 100 Proof. For those who might not know, Joe Principe is the bassist for Rise Against, he has some sick bass lines on RPM
@@abomb9299 yeah, that’s a jam for sure and I think a more technical bass line, but I think 100 Proof has a better feel. What do I know though? Bro Hymn and Iron Man are the only two songs I can play, haha!
Incredible once again. HWM has been a staple since the late 90’s for me. Absolutely great band. It’s wild to see you discovering so much of this music and bringing it to more people in the process. Keep crushing
Now check out Leatherface who shared an album with Hot Water Music in 1999. Here's what I wrote about them in my article The Top 15 Punk Albums published on Analog Planet site. " Mush, the last LP on our list of the top 15 punk albums of all time, certainly takes a backseat to none. And I'm not alone in my praise of Leatherface. Trouser Press called them "By far England's finest, most exciting punk band of the 90's," and The Guardian chimed in "the greatest British punk band of the modern era." Leatherface was launched in Sunderland, England in 1988 by singer Frankie Stubbs and guitarist Dickie Hammond. Stubbs' raspy voice, recalling Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, is the first thing remarked upon by most people hearing the band. I love his voice, worldly wise and full of emotion. Hammond is an ace guitarist, Stubbs also plays guitar. Together they weave the richest layered musical tapestries, both in words and music. No punk band wrote and sang lyrics at times so emotional, so poetic, so melancholy, so passionate, so raw, so enigmatic and open to myriad interpretations. Steve Charlton on bass and Andrew Laing on drums are rock solid. Leatherface's first album, Cherry Knowle, with a picture of the inside of the Cherry Knowle mental hospital on the cover, was released in 1989, followed in 1990 by Fill Your Boots. Both are fine efforts but in 1991 came Mush, and that was perfection. Top notch production, beautifully recorded, fifteen absolutely wonderful songs. The group can play hard charging punk like "How Lonely" and "Winning" then turn around and play multi-layered slow tempo like “Not Superstitious" and kill it every time. These are not your average simple punk songs. They take some effort on the part of the listener to fully appreciate. Maybe that's why they never achieved the commercial success so many of their fans wished for them. I could never imagine their songs receiving mass airplay. Stubbs was asked about this but seemed content to just create the music for whomever appreciated it. In total the band released ten studio albums, the last being The Stormy Petrel in 2010. In a testament to their greatness, that album showed no decline whatsoever in creativity in over 20 years. While most of the lawyer/corporate controlled "punk" bands of the last two decades have completely faded from memory, Leatherface has only grown in stature. With each passing day more and more people discover this unique band and that surely warms the cockles of me heart."
Leatherface is criminally under rated. 'The Stormy Petrel' is a masterpiece. I compare them to Jawbreaker, but without the brush with commercial success.
Those split records are such a great idea. I'm surprised you don't see that in mainstream. It opens you up to something you may have never listed to otherwise.
Absolutely loved how passionate you were about the song. I'm a guitar player and not particularly bassist and always have struggled to have an ear for bass but love the channel. I'd like to request something by Propagandhi (failed imagineer) or more A Wilhelm Scream - The King Is Dead
Wish I could like this video more than once. So great to watch, hot water music is an amazing band that had been semi underground for some 30 years and always put out quality songs.

one of the greatest arrangements of creative musicians ever.
Yeah, thats a good recommendation. Frenzal rhomb is also good aussie punk bass fun
They have two main singers, Chuck Ragan is one of them and Chris Wollard is the other. Cool track, Jason is definitely an awesome and underrated bassist
from this album on its chris from flatliners in place of wollard.
Knew this was inevitable 😅 still recommend trendy by reel big fish 👌 bassist Matt Wong (turn the radio off album version)
I shared a coffee with the bass player of HWM and man what an intelligent and sweet dude. Made time for all the fans.
They’ve been my favorite band for twenty years. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “how did I miss this band all these years?!”
The rhythm section of this band is great and you can hear the jazz playing background. Then add 2 singing guitarists that can each songwrite and you have an outstanding band.
Can’t wait for you to dive more into this band!
Jason Black is gold no matter what he does.
lol
Forever and Counting/ Fuel for the Hate Game is where it’s at.
Face to face and Scott Shiflett is one to check out. Probably walk the walk is the one to check out.
I've been suggesting him since I came across his Rancid video 😂😂
@@1thess523 He's one of the reasons I picked up bass. I was blanking on a song though.
Disconnected or Bent but not broken
Just requested as well! Bass players know
Absolutely! Awesome player with the best pick tone around.
you don't know me, BUT I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!!!
God D4 are so good. Still remember hearing File Under: Adult Urban Contemporary on a Fat Wreck comp and losing my mind
😇🙏🏼🔥
Hot Water Music is actually a book by Charles Bukowski as well.
Hence the song “Us and Chuck” 🤔
Since you loved this song, I thought I’d suggest The Draft “Alive or Dead”. Hot Water Music has 2 guitarist vocalists songwriters and when 1 of them focused on solo stuff, the other 3 members of the band did a side project called The Draft. “Drag My Body” is Chuck singing, while with The Draft song I suggested you will get the other songwriter of Hot Water Music in Chris, while still getting Jason Black’s great bass work. Cheers.
This is definitely one of the most emotional songs in Punk Rock for sure, it has so much power in it, you can really fall into the song, amazing
I love seeing people discovering rad music for the first time!
Love it!!
That bass fill after the first chorus just reminded me of something Geddy Lee would do. Quick, clean, and awesome!
Right?! That’s what prompted me to mention Geddy later in the video. Really similar phrasing and style in the best way possible.
In the official music video for Drag my body, Jason is playing a frankenstain bass, made with an aerodyne body and a Jedy Lee signature neck
*Geddy
It all makes sense 😍
Both Jason and the drummer, Geroge, have a jazz background
Someone else knows 🙏
Yep! Had a conversation with J when they played in Minneapolis years back. It blew my mind talking with him, i walked away with a mental list of some great music and a great convo about gear and stuff. It was awesome.
That would make a lot of sense. A handful of the good bass players in punk I know have this background. Bad Brains and our previous hero Matt Freeman.
@@caffeinatedinsanity2324 Matt freeman is stupid amazing
I just saw these guys live the other night and this was a real crowd pleaser. The whole band was incredibly tight. I specifically remember Jason Black played that fill at 5:00 and he made it look like a piece of cake, it seemed so effortless for him
I have seen these guys live more times than I can count… each member is so talented. For another great bass lick check out Free Radio Gainesville by HWM
Growing up with skate punk, I didn't get these guys' hype. The older I got, the more I was like... Holy shit I've been missing out. This song is brilliant and your coverage of this song is brilliant.
These guys were such a surprise to find. Appreciate the kind words!
Part of the reason I love this series is because I'm also hearing stuff I haven't heard as an avid punk music fan.
Hearing Drag my Body as a punk fan and musician was absolutely next level.
Welcome to the experience
I love this band so much!! Glad you're discovering them! Chuck Ragan is so powerful vocally and an amazing songwriter. His folk solo stuff is great too!
I've never heard of Hot Water Music. Thanks for checking it out. This was great! 🤘
Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much for the tip! Appreciate your support!
Chuck ragans solo stuff has become the soundtrack to my life
I feel this.
You've been hitting bangers! You got to do 88 fingers Louie - 100 proof and Cigar - Wright & Rong.
Punk Rock Rule Book
Please do right and wrong by Cigar
@@abomb9299 yeah, that’s a jam for sure and I think a more technical bass line, but I think 100 Proof has a better feel. What do I know though? Bro Hymn and Iron Man are the only two songs I can play, haha!
The bass player from lagwagon actually requested legacy of 7 piles by cigar in the lagwagon video. Hoping he does that song
Who ever did the mix for this deserves high praise
One of my favorite bands of all time. Jason Black also being my favorite bass player. Glad you found them!
I thought you said something about Hot Water Music a few videos ago and I was thinking yesterday, did I dream that? Haha so thankful to see this
Haha! Dreams come true! 😅
Trouser Press called them "By far England's finest, most exciting punk band of the 90's," and The Guardian chimed in "the greatest British punk band of the modern era."
Leatherface was launched in Sunderland, England in 1988 by singer Frankie Stubbs and guitarist Dickie Hammond.
That split is so good!
Not a day goes by is simply one of the best songs ever
“Caught up” from that split is without a doubt my favorite HWM song
Thank you So much for this!!! I’ve been meaning to suggest for quite awhile. Thanks for all bass players for bringing this to forefront
My pleasure!
Absolutely loved how passionate you were about the song. I'm a guitar player and not particularly bassist and always have struggled to have an ear for bass but love the channel. I'd like to request something by Propagandhi (failed imagineer) or more A Wilhelm Scream - The King Is Dead
Never heard of these guys. I’m definitely a new fan now.
Wish I could like this video more than once. So great to watch, hot water music is an amazing band that had been semi underground for some 30 years and always put out quality songs.
You are one of my favorite bassist, i love you work in Tetrafusion, STS and Watermox. Punk rock music is my favorite genre so I'm stoke to see you reacting to punk rock music! Keep it up!
Wow, thanks!!! 🙏🏼
So glad you reacted to this song! Been a Jason Black fan for years, his work in Senses Fail Is fire.
First time hearing this band! literally as soon as you said "This is a great song" and said it the same time haha!! I will defo have to check more of this band!
Haven’t heard this song in years. Reminded me how good it is
best rhythm section in punk rock
Oh man… this isn’t my favorite song from HWM, but I’m stoked you’ve found them. Jason is so SO dope
great band! They been around a long time. Got way more recognition starting around 2008 or so. I had the pleasure of seeing them once
They start a tour in May.
You played one riff in the middle that sounds exactly like the beginning of one of their old songs
Trademark! Had the exact same thought.
@@jasongitlitz7748 👊👊👊👊😀😀
I was looking for this comment! 😆
@@jasongitlitz7748I think we should get him to do the full album of Fuel for the Hate Game. Just hearing the start of 220 Years still blows me away to this day.
Bit shocking to realize it's been 11+ years since this release. Another great choice and great vid.
This song's been in my daily rotation since it came out, absolutely sick performances from all the guys.
So glad you did this one! Such a great band and a great bassline. Cheers!
One of the best rhythm sections out there!
I only know them from the BYO split they did with Alkaline Trio. I'm going to have to get some of their original stuff!
Own man. Chuck Regan writes some of my favorite lyrics EVER. HWM are legends.
I LOVE this song. I LOVE this band.
That reaction at 5:00 made me laugh out loud
