For absolute noobs like me, who followed step by step and got a TON of errors and frustration, make sure the "Auto-remove-redundants" is selected under the constraints panel. This is my 3rd time looking at FreeCAD, and these little things being left out of tutorials is exactly why beginners give up. This is a 9 min video and I spent 30 mins struggling to figure that out. That's a 3x cost. This speaks to both the institutional knowledge that experienced users forget, as well as generally bad default workflow settings. It's clear after understanding how constraints work now, that he has this setting enabled, as you see the symmetrical constraint ID change from 5 to 4 in this video. So removing redundant constraints is critical to complete this exercise but left out by the author
Unreal! Thank you for posting this! I am screaming at the computer.... so true, I have been using AutoCad for close to 30 years. I "use" Fusion 360 etc. exactly what you said, one simple thing to change on the constraints. I almost removed the FreeCad app from my computer.
Exactly! The teacher's task here is not to create obstacles. This is not figure out yourself type deal. If you teach. You show clearly step-by-step. Or don't show at all! I hate teachers who think they teach but actually waste time. 👊💥☠
Thank you for your positive feedback! I'm glad to hear that my speaking volume and pace are clear and easy to understand, even for non-native English speakers. I strive to make my content accessible to as many viewers as possible, and I'm always happy to receive feedback and suggestions on how I can improve. Thank you for watching my videos, and I wish you the best of luck with your FreeCAD journey!
I tried to follow along, and found most of my problems were self-inflicted and not paying enough attention. But for a newbie, it was my first part! The errors taught me so much also. A big thank you for the series.
I am working in learning FreeCad and have watched lots of videos. Your block of instruction was the best so fare, informative and simple for old minds like me. Thank you for the encouragement and the lesson.
Again, I was at the point of giving up on FreeCAD. Doing well, so far. Did the exercise myself, before watching the video. Only the radius portion came from the video. Never would have guessed how that works. Thanks again. I have high expectations at this point.
I'm glad that you are back and continuing the Freecad education. Your videos are so clear and easy to follow. They are much appreciated. One thing that I want to mention is your pronunciation of the word tangent. Like a lot of non-native English speakers you pronounce tangent based on the way it is spelled. Your pronunciation of the G in tangent is not the way the letter G is pronounced in German. In tangent it is pronounced like the letter J sounds. Tangent sounds like tan-jent. The gent is pronounced like in the word gentlemen. English is a horrible language when it comes to how it is spoken compared to how it is written. Part of the problem is that the language was still evolving after the spelling was defined. Your English is extremely good. Other than a few words (eg. tangent, diameter) it would be unlikely for anyone to thing that you were not a native English speaker.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying my best to get the English right. I watch A LOT of English videos, sports, and all kinds of stuff but unfortunately I hardly hear these kinds of words there. :-) The word "tangent" comes from the Latin word "tangere" which means "touch". In its original form it's pronounced G like in "goal" in Latin and also in German, so it was a wrong guess to spell it this way also in English :D . But for the next videos I will try to get it right. I also listened to some examples how to pronounce "diameter". I'm really glad for the feedback and happy to improve. Thanks so much!
2weeks ago I was terrified to try any CAD apart from Tinkercad, You have opened up a whole new world to me, Very easy to understand and follow ,Thank you so much.
This is a great exercise for beginners. I had a few problems at first, but after I found out what commands are called, what they looked like, I was able to easily do this exercise. In previous companies I worked for I used Pro-Engineer (CREO) and Inventor for the 3D modeling software. Since I cannot afford these programs for home use, this program is perfect. I have to learn what FreeCAD calls there commands, since each software calls them different names.
I used the conventional approach, not knowing there is a new command for v .20 . As I am a beginner, I spent about 30 minutes. Very good exercise. I like it. Thanks for the online lectures.
I started to follow the Freecad Academy videos in order, so far I have learn a lot. Just got done with this exercise, and now I'm headed to the next Video. Thanks for the education. I'm loving it...
I followed your steps and it was clear and instructive. You are great teacher, better than most....for beginners. Well I am a beginner. A couple of days ago I did not even know FreeCad existed. I know nothing about CAD. Today with your tutoring, I drew a flange in CAD!!
I have watched all of your German lessons to improve my CAD. I am German and live 25 years in the US now and like to state that your English is very good especially no long ahhhhh and pauses, very fluent. Looking forward to learn more FreeCad also for the CAM workbench.
The only annunciation that had me scratching my head for a minute was Tangent. The 'G' is pronounced like the 'G' in Gentlemen. Other than that very easiy to follow along and understand the content. Thank you very much for these leasons.
I watched the video then I watched it a second time and worked along with you. Then tried it without the video, but I had to go back to you video as i forgot some of the dimensions I got on reasonably well. For me I found it quite difficult, but I think I've learned a lot. As far as i'm concerned that tutorial was excellent. Thank you
Tried a few tutorials really like this one, others go at a break net speed and are almost incoherent even when there first language is English or they um and arh too much and obviously have not planed the tutorial. This is well thought out and very clear and should not only be a tutorial for using FreeCad but be a guide on how to deliver a video tutorial.
So many different functions to learn and (hopefully) remember. Took me several (3) tries but with each attempt I learned more. Thank you. Your instruction is great.
Never used a CAD package in my life, found his tutorial easy to follow and straight forward.. Trying to learn basic cad This makes it look simp[le... Thanks....
I did not have any previous experience with CAD and it took my a few hours to complete the exercise correctly. Then I watched the rest of video to see what I have done wrong. I turned out that I discovered most of things, but I missed a few nice shorcuts demonstrated in the second half of the video. E.g. I kept trying to use ZS symmetry to copy objects form left to right, which did not fully work, becasue what was copied missed constraints anyway. I also drew the outline by creating large circles and removing parts of them with trim. Of course the method with polyline was 10 times faster and better. But it was a good lesson of handling the program in general, managing constraints, navigating the UI. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. When you said 16mm I heard it as 60mm and was "Why does mine look so far off right now?" had a good chuckle. Looking forward to watching more of your tutorials and exercises.
I managed to succeed twice, once doing it my own way, the second attempt i did it the way as shown in the video. In my first attempt i use the trimming tool. which although did work left me with 1 edge that somehow didn't get fully constrained because it added something it shouldn't have. (like said in an earlier tutorial that trimming can add more constraints than intended). However i could still pad it an add the fillet. The second attempt i followed along with the video and it made it much easier and was much more clearn of what i should do or could do next time. Amazingly clear and easy to understand tutorial.
Very nice. Much better process than what I would attempted with my decades old CAD skills.. All this is going on my resume :) Thank you. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd house on the left
This was indeed very helpful. Followed your previous videos and found that you were - perhaps - a little fast for newbies when indicating steps, but once I reached this exercice, not only was I able to do the sketch without any help, I also applied the logic of the sketching to the pad for the fillet. I don't know if you voluntarily left this step out of your previous videos, but it's nice to not spoon-feed us everything while leaving us hints and leads to manage by ourselves. Thanks for your dedication for those tutorials.
Thank you. Being a complete newbie I had watch and make the flange. I actually did it over, and over, until I could do it without watching your video. On to your next exercise. Thank you.
I did it, my first completed exercise! Only used AutoCAD while at uni, 15 years ago, and very briefly. I could not remember a thing about CAD in general and I recently found out about FreeCAD. I was surprised I was able to do it in about 10 minutes. I did use polyline, but without pressing the M button. I drew a rhomboid then added fillets manually to its corners.
This video is awesome!!! I had such a hard time fumbling with this program, this made it super easy to understand and actually make a drawing with demonstration of useful commands. Thank you!!
Thank you for this. I've used Fusion 360 before for some personal stuff. Other than that, I'm completely new to CAD. I tried tinkering with FreeCAD once before, but was completely lost. Fusion360 is a lot more intuitive to me. But your lesson here really helped me grasp how to sketch something in FreeCAD.
Thank you for these tutorials. I am a complete novice. I struggle a bit but I just go back and keep watching the video. I am able to fix some of mistakes on my own now. Look forward to completeing the rest of the videos.
Like others, I didn't think about the polyline tool (although I did figure out how to do it with individual circles, lines, constraining with tangency and then trimming). I got a nice sense of accomplishment when I actually figured out how to get the right result (even if the journey was a little convoluted). I'm enjoying these tutorials and finding them very helpful.
Thank you for the lesson. It was done very well and I enjoyed working through it. I ended up with one (1) degree of freedom and I could not figure out how to clear it. It had to do with the right side hole,. I know that because it was different color than the other lines. I know that I connected the two (2) small holes to be equal distance from the vertical axis because both holes had arrows pointing toward each other. The only thing I could think of was that the right hole may not have been on the horizontal axis. I had "snap on" so that doesn't make sense. I think I will start over untill I get the exercise right. GREAT JOB!!!
I'm 6hrs in learning FreeCAD coming from fusion 360. I completed the exercise and it's being printed. Great lessons. Looking forward to more. I was at the level in Fusion of hard surface modelling not an expert at hard surface modelling. Hope it's easier here!
Thank you - great first exercise. I achieved the result, having only watched your basic course part #1 and part #2, then watched this video and got a few great tips such as using the polyline to create the outer edge, and only needing to select the single edge and use the fillet tool on the whole polyline edge due to tangents. Really grateful to you for this great introduction to FREECAD and already feel able to go and create. Looking forward to watching the next episodes. Thank you!
Never done anything with CAD, I managed to get all the way up to polyline but forgot about "m" and ended up skipping through up to that part in your solution after your recommended 20 mins trying to work it out. Not too bad for a dumbarse I thought... Very happy with your tutorials so far!
THANK YOU AGAIN I LIKE THESE COURSES VERY MUCH. I DID IT LIKE I WAS STILL USING A DRAFTING TABLE LOL. I HAD CREATED THE THREE CIRCLES THEN CREATED 3 MORE CIRCLES OVER THOSE. LATER I USED THE LINE TOOL TO CONNECT THE THREE OUTSIDE CIRCLES. I DELETED THE THE LINES THAT WERE OVERLAPING THEN SET TANGENTS. EITHER WAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER WITH THE POLY LINE LOL. I HAVE TO GET MORE PRACTICE WITH THE POLY LINE BUT SO FAR SO GOOD. AGAIN THANK YOU SIR.
Great video. Took me 4 hours the first time. I thought something was wrong with new version since I kept getting weird errors so installed 0.19 instead of 0.21. Same thing. I finally managed to get it done though and it only took an hour the second time. Thanks for all the help with this video.
Thanks for this exercise. I don't see many online courses with quality exercises like this one. It wasn't too hard but it did present a challenge (which I failed, which is good because I learned from it). Took me way longer then 20 minutes, but I am used to disregard teacher's time assessment for homework. You guys always seem to overestimate us 😁
Thanks for this! I struggled with the sketch, drawing circles and lines for the outline, and using symmetry a lot, then trimming. Somehow I got over-constraints, and tangency broke coincidence, and so on. What an elegant tool the polyline is! Although it did not always create tangency between straights and circles, not sure why I had to add some tangencies afterwards.
the 0.19.3 is still listed as the current stable version on the FreeCAD website, so it can still be very useful. and the 0.20 has some nice but smaller changes. :)
Im so impressed at being able to build something like this, ok it didnt go quite the same as your example. But I understand where I went wrong Your videos are very informative, I'm learnign so much. Many thanks
It was a good video. I had a hard time with it because I forgot about 'm' on the polyline to create the curved lines, so I tried to use line segments and curves individually. Also, I was not sure how to make cut outs, and did not realise I did not have to do anything other then draw the shapes inside.
Did the exercise by myself in the first place and then again following the video. Very well thought exercise, it really helped to find some problems and appreciate the "shortcuts" used in the video. Thank you Flowwie
I watched the first 2.5 videos, then attempted this. I forgot about the polyline tool, but once you reminded me of it, I walked through with you for the rest. I feel like I am starting to get a grasp on that tool. Thank you for the videos and keep up the great work!
Great tutorial as usual! I did it on my own at first, but forgot to use of polyline and the "m" command for the external outline. So it took me longer since I have to use line segments and two outer circles and the use of edge trim to define the boundary outline. Thanks again! Kudos to you!
I did in a different manner but result is the same, just create 2 concentric circles for each circle, add tangent lines and then trim the unecessary! great exercise perfect to understand how to use freecad
Phenomenally good content, pacing, and style - I'm new to FreeCAD but was pretty good with SolidEdge twenty years ago and Blender more recently. This video met me where I'm at. Love that you can apply a radius and equality constraint at the same time, that's really useful
Nice video thanks.. I've not used freecad for a year or so and your video helped me a lot relearn the basics.. much appreciated. I'll now go and watch more of your other videos.
got it now wow that was great I want to learn more please. I really want to use this for designing my own RC airplane plans. these will mostly be 2D plans I can print out. Thank you so much for your lesson I will look for more from you you are easy to listen to and explain real good. thx again.
Great video. This part is similar to what I need in my first freecad project which. Got some errors because I choose different measurements. But it adds to the learning. Thanks 😊
I thought this was a great video with the right amount of difficulty for a first project to try on your own after watching your other videos, I would like to see a video where we learn more complex shapes that aren't just extruded 2d shapes.
Other than your butchering of English words like poly and tangent, especially tangent, it was a good video. Phew! I found it quite difficult especially dealing with the constraint errors. Creating the polyline and the arcs took me awhile as well, but I finally managed to finish. I might have to do this a few more times before I can figure out what I am doing.
I downloaded FreeCAD over a year and a half ago and never really learned it. Have used Fusion primarily but am giving FreeCAD another shot with the new version. Think if I can get the different terminology and commands between the two straightened out I might actually learn it this time. Thanks for your help!
I am learning FreeCAD to help a friend learn it. I usually use Solid Edge, but that is not an option for my friend who has a Mac. I thought this tutorial was a good beginner exercise and your solution demonstrated constraint use very well, especially the symmetrical constraint. The other nice tip was selecting multiple elements to apply a common measurement to them.
brilliant video, thankyou so much for your help! The only difference I did when making the final fillet was selecting the face rather than the edge but it had exactly the same result!
Ok, the life is good and this youtube channel is the best! I took not that long to find a solution to this sketch, but I have stuck on the tangency. So, I stoped and watched the video, Voilà!
Great video. Thank you. My only problem was "Auto Remove Redundants" was not selected by default for me, so it would eventually throw an error when trying to apply constraint.
Ok great video! Lovely explain it! I have more than 1 hour on this exercise, I was getting stuck on horizontal constrain 😢, which was a bit frustrating, for some reason after I was doing symmetrical constrain the horizontal constrain was invalid, for some reason I was getting some sort of error ,, datum 60mm for the constrain with index 7 is invalid,,. However the solution was to do the horizontal constrain first then symmetrical constrain, don’t ask me how I figured out this 🤷♂️ I just tried, well to say true I was making some research and some other people were saying something that some previous constrain will not allow the actual one you’re trying to make especially for horizontal don’t know why! Is my first try on 3D Cad creation But I you said ,, Practice is the best teacher,, Thank you!
Excellent example, Flowwie. I had an issue with the origin point not existing at 0,0,0. As I zoomed into the origin, it was clearly not in the right place. Removed the auto constraint checkbox and the origin lined up as well as all features.
My friend, I don't know if someone has told you yet or not, but "tangent" in English is pronounced "tan - jent". I am just getting started with FreeCAD and really love your content. I know about your PayPal and LiberaPay links - do you have a Patreon as well?
I drew a diamond with the poly-line tool and trimmed the corners. I my opinion that's even faster. But I agree the "m" key should be way more visible for how useful it is.
Took me way too long to solve for my taste (7.5 minutes) But only because I didn't get that the radiuses have the same origin. Nice video as always - thank you!
Thanks so much for your support! It should be visible from the drawing ✍️ have a great weekend. I’m done for today - German release and English release today 😂
commented on the wrong video! This was a great exercise and a valuable learning experience. Great work and i look forward to learning more as I am new to CAD,
Also would like to learn mirror tools. Every time same sketches I have to repeat both side of axis. How many options there. Request to please make video of mirror tool. It will really helpful
My first attempt was to draw three larger circles and then join them with lines, then create the holes inside of that. Cut away the lines I don't need, That worked ok, but it's hard to exactly determine where the lines should connect to the outer circles. I also tried with Arcs, but that was much harder. I didn't even think of the polyline! That looked much easier. I'm more familiar with OpenSCAD, so I need to change my mindset a bit to do this kind of CAD
Download the exercise sheet here:

Why is there no offset command in sketcher?
how you make 2d sheet with 3d part in corner ?

because they keep changing the software too much between each edition.
I like that you speak loud enough and rarely that I can understand with my English. You are doing a wonderful thing.
Thank you for your positive feedback! I'm glad to hear that my speaking volume and pace are clear and easy to understand, even for non-native English speakers.

@@FreeCADAcademy Yes your English is quite good except for a few mix-ups between soft and hard sounds. But very understandable.
I just installed FreeCAD, so I followed the instructions without attempting it myself first. Very good starter tutorial, thanks for this.

Dead on. I watched a tutorial right before this, and couldn't understand any of the English spoken with his thick "no rice and curry" Indian accent.
So many different functions to learn and (hopefully) remember. Took me several (3) tries but with each attempt I learned more. Thank you. Your instruction is great.

I'm new to FreeCad. Been modeling for several years now, about 6ish years. Still an amateur, this is a great alternative to Nx and its free.
I never thought freeCad would ever be this easy all thanks to the effort to put into it
Thanks a lot !!

First 27 seconds your speech 💯 right. Initially I faced same issue. After practice more now it comes to in hand
Very good!!

Which do you prefer? I'm trying to decide if I'm going to invest my time in Fusion360 or Freecad this year.
First time looking into freecad and cad in general. This was a great example of the workflow in this enviroment!
New to Freecad - this is a great first exercise! The content is clear and easy to follow. Great work, thank you!
Thank you!
I love your work Flowie, I started 2 months ago and eagerly await your new videos. Thanks
Keep up the good work!!
Never done anything with CAD, I managed to get all the way up to polyline but forgot about "m" and ended up skipping through up to that part in your solution after your recommended 20 mins trying to work it out. Not too bad for a dumbarse I thought... Very happy with your tutorials so far!
This is the first FreeCad tutorial I have managed to complete. Thank you!
(Even then the symmetry constraint didn't work!)
Fix your CAPS LOCK button, it's stuck
Although it did not always create tangency between straights and circles, not sure why I had to add some tangencies afterwards.
me too.
I'm just getting started with freecad and have found this and your old .19 videos very helpful! Looking forward to more!
the 0.19.3 is still listed as the current stable version on the FreeCAD website, so it can still be very useful. and the 0.20 has some nice but smaller changes. :)
Straight to the point and very easy to grasp the functions meaning. Thanks.
Im so impressed at being able to build something like this, ok it didnt go quite the same as your example. But I understand where I went wrong
Your videos are very informative, I'm learnign so much. Many thanks
You’re welcome buddy
It was a good video. I had a hard time with it because I forgot about 'm' on the polyline to create the curved lines, so I tried to use line segments and curves individually. Also, I was not sure how to make cut outs, and did not realise I did not have to do anything other then draw the shapes inside.
Great you learned something from it! Best regards
Both methods lead to the same result ! Great work !
Thank you so much for your lesson I will look for more from you you are easy to listen to and explain real good. thx again.
Hi Florian great exercise what I need most is how to work on faces adding and cutting through them.
So super how you do your lessons. Thank you so much. The explaining speed is perfect, not too fast.
Yep that’s why it is exercise one 💪🏻
Man your video makes soooo much sense!!! Thank you soooo much when I start making money trust me I’ll thank you properly!!!!
Thank you your tutorials are very helpful to me. Very much appreciated. Elsie
I am learning FreeCAD with you. It is doing easy. Thanks
Great Tutorial.
My first part ! ...cheers.
Second Lesson, very clear, very happy with the steps and progress
Is my first try on 3D Cad creation
But I you said ,, Practice is the best teacher,,
Thank you!
I know about your PayPal and LiberaPay links - do you have a Patreon as well?
tangent is the one you get with the drink tang.
Thank you, your tutorial is outstanding - practicing one by one... thanks...
Thanks a lot man !
🤯I had no idea you tap the "m" in the poly-line tool.
I drew a diamond with the poly-line tool and trimmed the corners. I my opinion that's even faster. But I agree the "m" key should be way more visible for how useful it is.
@@schogaia Yep- that is how I have done it for years. I like having this new option.
Great you can still learn something new here!
This was a great tutorial, Ihave just started using CAD, and this was easy as pie, thanks for your help
Very simply and clearly demonstrated. Well done.
Took me way too long to solve for my taste (7.5 minutes)
But only because I didn't get that the radiuses have the same origin.
Nice video as always - thank you!
Thanks so much for your support! It should be visible from the drawing ✍️ have a great weekend. I’m done for today - German release and English release today 😂
@@FreeCADAcademy it is visible from the drawing if you look properly which I obviously did not ;)
My time was just a bit over 4 minutes. I only drew half of the flange, and then mirrored the rest.
@@SirStumblesALot well done ;-)
@@SirStumblesALot smart!
commented on the wrong video! This was a great exercise and a valuable learning experience. Great work and i look forward to learning more as I am new to CAD,
Another great tutorial. Your style is very good. I'm going to make my gasket today.
Excellent for Beginners, Thank You !!!.😀😀
Keep em coming! Thank you!
Yes I’m finally back after some issues!
this helped me a lot! Looking forward for the new videos... keep up the good work!
Next week - next video!
Thanks for the support !
I am a beginner and very much clear tutorial for me..
Great! This is an easy explanation. VERY GOOD video for beginners.
Easy to follow, these videos are so welcome.
It is easier than I tried.. thanks a lot. Please do much more videos like More complicated sketches and pad and pockets assembling video
Also would like to learn mirror tools. Every time same sketches I have to repeat both side of axis. How many options there. Request to please make video of mirror tool. It will really helpful
Great video... was very helpful in learning how to start working in FreeCad. Very easy to follow!
This one was really easy, guess why? Because of yours GREAT tutorials! Thanks!
I need to start technical drawings and I look forward to learning from you.
Easy exercise and excellent explanation.
Much easier than shenanigans I was trying on my own.
