    This is great. I'm just getting started so it took me a few tries I deleted my sketch and started over a few times before I returned to the video. I appreciate your encouragement to try it myself before going into the lesson, and your encouragement in general. My friend is helping me with this as well, so your course is keeping me from wearing him out with my endless questions. Thank you Flowwie, thank you very much.

      Thank you for sharing your positive feedback! I'm glad to hear that my video was helpful for you as you start out with FreeCAD. It's natural to need a few tries to get the hang of things, and I'm glad that my encouragement to try things out yourself was helpful.
      I'm also happy to hear that my course is helping you learn FreeCAD and that it's saving your friend from being bombarded with endless questions. Learning a new software can be challenging, but with persistence and the right resources, anyone can master it.
      Thank you for watching my video, and I wish you the best of luck with your FreeCAD journey!

    It took me about an hour, but I was determined to get it. I figured it out eventually, but watching you do it afterward helped me solidify my mistakes and how to use FreeCAD more correctly.

    Thank you so much for this series! I started with zero knowledge of FreeCAD or CAD in general for that matter. Followed along your courses (pressing pause a lot) and by the time I got to this exercise, I was able to knock it out in a matter of minutes. I used polyline for the cutout as well, but it was helpful to see another way to do it. I'm quite proud of my progress and it's all thanks to you! I've already knocked out one of the simpler projects I've been wanting to do, and am excited to try something more complex.

    Can't say how appreciative I am that you took the time to make these videos! New programs can be daunting, but you manage to break up the focus points and pacing of the video so well to make it manageable for us beginners.Thanks Flowwie!

    NB!!! my novice brained struggled for an hour not realising the tangent coincident had not been created along the polyline I was creating because I stopped mid way to correct a mistake and in restarting the polyline the tangent coincidence was not formed .Thank you for another great lesson💯💯💯

    Hello Flowwie! I've been following your videos for a while now and for this video I did indeed attempt to create the Gasket just from the first frame of the video before playing. I'm proud to say I managed to do it with no assistance! I took a slightly different path to you but (of course) we ended up with the same object.
    Thank you! I look forward to the next video.

    • @TheSophera

      There is one thing that might be worth explaining that I just thought of, and that's the special drawing line mode you enter after having drawn an arc with the polyline tool, and why you can't get to it normally.
      By default, FreeCAD assumes you want tangent constraints on all the joins between arcs and lines, so after drawing an arc, it assumes that you want the next line drawn to be a tangent of that arc - which is to say, a line that smoothly enters the arc without any sharp edges. If you press M twice you'll get back to the normal line drawing, but FreeCAD won't automatically put a tangent constraint on the join so if you want one you'll need to go back and add one.

  • @robertstead8713
    @robertstead8713 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This one really kicked my A***. 😂. I used poly for both but I was unable to constrain the lines as per your drawing. Turns out I was not selecting the points but the lines themselves. Very glad I gave up and built it with you. Enjoyed the challenge!

    I spent a lot of time working on it and had some hang ups with excessive constraints. I should have anchored to center earlier, as moving it after the fact was next to impossible. The circle at center point is so much easier. Trying to figure this out myself before watching was such an eye opening experience. I learned that I still have a lot to learn.

    I have very-very little experience in 3D design (I started with Fusion 360 but due to licensing issues I decided to switch to something free), but I was able to finish this sketch based on the technical drawing after watching your previous videos in this playlist. You presenting the subject very clearly and its great that you give tasks to complete to the viewers. I really missed this in the fusion tutorials I watched. Great job and thanks for helping us beginners.

  • @kevfquinn
    @kevfquinn ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for creating this series.
    Having just watched and worked through the first exercise as a complete newby, I did this one from the technical drawing before watching the rest of the video, and of course did it with two polylines :) Finding out about using a rectangle to do the inner shape is a good second step. This is a good way to build up knowledge of the myriad tools in the system, which is overwhelming when starting out.
    Biggest thing I had to figure out myself this time, was to find the incorrect constraints I'd ended up with for one reason or another. That took some experimentation and thinking to understand what's going on, which was useful learning itself; made extensive use of the constraints panel in the sketch task view to deactivate constraints individually to find what was causing trouble.

    Really good 👍video, thank you. The real "got it" here, for me, was learning where to begin the sketch; the center point. I attempted it on my own, using your image, and although it didn't turn out too bad I wouldn't use it in my car, or any other vehicle for that matter. But, as you say, the learning will come with practice; what we focus on expands.

      @FreeCADAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually I only do this because I expect v 0.20 to come out in the next weeks … and I don’t want my tutorials to become outdated too fast. If you’re just starting with Freecad, then it’s absolutely fine to start with 0.19.3. you will miss some smaller features and improvements but 0.19.3 is less likely to crash. For my paid work that I do, I also work with the 0.19.3 !

I also hope they will publish soon the 0.20 but as I see, the 19.4 is into the "coocking process" and they didn't publish the .EXE yet. I imagine the 0.20 will require another year :-/ At the end I installed it, because there is some feature I do love to have.

    This one is really hard for some reason. I thought I had it, but it still had 7 dof left, but I could not find them. Also, how do you set the vertical distance between the two outside horizontal lines which is supposed to be 72mm. I might skip this one if I can't figure it out soon.
    I wish freecad listed the dof so you would know what was left.
    Wow! I finally manage to get the outside border fully constrained. It took quite a while, but I finally figured out that I had a bunch of broken line segments. I am not sure how since I used the polyline, but after I joined all the line segments together did not take long to get it fully constrained. I just have to work kn the inner shape now.

    I can't get version 21.2 to follow this tutorial. it is full of bugs. I can't set the coincidence constraint to the 2 arcs for the interior hole in the gasket as you show(8:10 in the video) it just ends up overlaying the opening on the outside of the part. and says the part is fully constrained. 21.2 is far too full of bugs to waste my time learning it. moving on to another brand because I've wasted about 2 weeks and have had nothing but differences that don't seem to work as shown.

    I might be overthinking it, but is it a mistake to sketch the two holes as having equal diameter? The drawing shows they both have 10mm diameter but it does _not_ say they're equal - which to me suggests it's just a coincidence they're both 10mm. When they redesign the parts this gasket is for, and change one bolt to 12mm diameter but not the other, you'd need to remove the equality constrainte

    Hi Flowie, you wrote somewhere that you were thinking about how to structure your tutorials and maybe my thoughts are useful:
    I would probably split it up in novice and advanced users.
    Novice would mean to me users that do not have memorized tools and procedures very well. For that group I would proceed as you do in this video => you clearly and systematically show how to make a proper sketch BUT you make the object to work out more complicated with any new video, like you did with this gasket.
    Advanced would mean to me you skip the making of a proper sketch but you dive into explaining special / more complicated tools / other workbenches.
    I am just trying to think along freely, if it makes any sense I’d say use it, if not, no offense taken. Again, I enjoy your tutorials and approach very much already.

    • @barbsfpv3066
      @barbsfpv3066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would LOVE to see that too.
      The most frustrating part is figuring out how to fix errors.
      Currently I just wipe out my entire design and start over, because I can't even begin to comprehend how to fix them.
      Instead all the tutorials pretend everything works perfectly every time and there's never any issues to solve.
      In one instance I accidentally constrained a line to the center line and no matter what I did to try to fix it I got errors.
      It would be really helpful to know how to remove constraints once they've been applied, because that's where 95% of my errors crop up.

If you want to edit the value of the Constraint then just double click on it in the Sketch and the dialog box will pop up to adjust the value. Hope that answers your question. I just started trying to learn to use FreeCAD a couple days ago and am still a bit stumped by a lot of things but I keep trying :)

    That was very hard until I found the 4mm measurement on the bottom of the diagram. Until that point, I couldn't get the sketch contstrained completely.
    A few more of these, and I think I might be ready to buy a 3D printer, which is why I'm doing this in the first place.
    One thing I'm having a hard time understanding is whether or not it matters where the sketch's center is. In this example, you put the center of one circle at the origin. Would that matter if you were going to 3D print this?

    Can you make a simple rectangle & wedge/trapezoid speaker box? Just six sides/pieces with one cut out for a speaker. Then how do I can a cut sheet and/or drawings? Thanks.

    As in the other exercise, typing M does nothing.

    I am having trouble with the constraints over-constraining. I can follow the same way you do it and it won't work. The angle is messed up where it wants to snap to the grid even when you select the line.

    Hi, thanks very much for this lesson, just a question, why do you always prefer to give fillets within sketches rather than as a feature later on? Isn't it always preferred to give later on?

    • @FreeCADAcademy
      @FreeCADAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In all other CAD Tools it is.
      In FreeCAD due to its vulnerability to the topological naming its more stable to do it within the sketch

    I manage to make it about 97% done without help. And as I did I couldn't find the degree of freedom tool() I'm on V.02.21). Besides that it seems it crucial in what order you do the constraints. On to the next one.

    I'm getting stuck at 6 minute mark with conflicting constraints not sure what im doing wrong... has something to do with top two radius and bottom right radius... any suggestions? figured out not all the points were constrained

    Okay, so I finally was able to finish this. Both the outer and inner lines are green and I am unable to move anything. I was able to create the 3d model from the sketch, but there is problem. The sketch still says the sketch has 8 dof for some reason.
    Okay, I figured it out. Thete were 4 stray points in the sketch. As soon as I deleted the stray points, the sketch is now fully constrained.

    I'm wondering how to do what once would have been called a tween between sketches... say you have one sketch above another that is only 50% of the second I'm sure freecad can make the corresponding walls?

    Hi Flow, Great exercise. I got it but in about three times the number of steps. I jumped in without reading your notes about the polyline tool and did it with individual lines and arcs. I did have trouble however trying to reproduce the Tech Drawing. The distances shown all came out as near guesses. Could you do a short follow-up on how you produced the drawing. Thanks, nick

      Did you make sure you have a 100% perpendicular view on the part in the drawing? If not that might explain the wrong measurements

      @@FreeCADAcademy Not sure. I'll check that. I'm a complete novice at the Tech Draw workbench so I'm really feeling my way still.

      On the second attempt it worked perfectly. I suspect that the view was not perpendicular but I've no idea how that happened on the first drawing. Thanks for the tip.

      @@nickoppen That was what I suspected. ;-)
      It can happen easily if you create your first view in the drawing before you adjust your view 100 % perfectly in the 3D viewport.
