The Greyhound is a very old European breed of dog, a sighthound which has been historically bred for coursing game and latterly Greyhound racing. The Greyhound is not an aggressive dog. Greyhounds are quiet, gentle, and loyal to their owners. They are very loving creatures, and enjoy the company of their humans and other dogs. They come in all colours. Their average lifespan is 12 years. Greyhounds live most happily as pets in quiet environments. Greyhounds have a sensitive nature, and gentle commands work best as training methods.
Bondi Vet covers all important aspects related to pet care. It provides crucial vet advice for different health issues related to pets, gives tutorials on how to train your pets from basic-to-advanced levels, and also provides comprehensive information about specific dog breeds and their habitats.

Please adopt retired racers! They finish their careers at three, four or five years - and countless thousands are put down at that age, or simply dumped or killed. And they can live til 11 or 12. Mine is currently a very fit, healthy and handsome 12 year old. Re-homing centres and rescue centres are bulging with these beautiful gentle character-ful dogs. They deserve loving homes after their time at the track.

actually no! thousands are not put down annually. not in the U.S at least over 95 % of retired greyhounds are ether adopted or returned back to the owner /breeder /trainer for ether a pet or for breeding. and before you say how do you know. i ma friends with a woman that runs a greyhound adoption agency and her daughter is a trainer. And i currently have three as pets. sorry i don't mean to come off aggressive. but yes there are in my opinion the best dog in the world and my oldest is thirteen and very healthy. don't mean to be pushy just trying to inform the public.

Here in Britain thousands ARE put down. The industry has a license to destroy so many thousands per year. What happens to the litter pups that don't make it to race training, we don't hear about. You can be sure that not every single pup in every single litter is given a good home. Ireland has an even less savoury reputation for what happens to pups and retired adults. Indeed, there is documented evidence of passing on retired dogs to the meat-markets in Asia and China. Naturally I'm delighted to hear how good the situation is in your country.

Once you have a greyhound you never go back to another breed.....greys are so gentle....they become very attached to you-if you give them time....They love you-if you deserve it....they do not"function" like a shepherd...they obey if your commands come in a calm manner and are not screamed at them...And then there comes a time when you think.....this grey must be reading my mind...and you realize that you probably never before had such a close companion.....

I had an adopted Greyhound (retired racer). He lived to be about 14, but finally died from terminal Cancer. You mentioned how they couldn't tolerate cold, but while that may be true to some Greyts, it wasn't true for Flying Carl. He loved running and romping in the snow, and would stay out for longer periods than normal. We had a cat also, and he got along fine, and also spent time with dogs of friends. He was the best dog ever. We miss him very much. Always adopt rather than buy from breeders. There are way to many great dogs on "death row". Save a life and adopt.

My “Flying” greyhound also loves the cold. Maybe it gets chilly on the Flying Eagles darm so they’re used to it.

Greyhounds are the sweetest most odd dogs I have ever met! Unfortunately most people go into what they think is easiest and adopt a lab or something of the kind. The thing is greyhounds’ pros far outweigh the cons and here’s
    Pros
    -They are very cute dogs
-They’re fine with being alone during the day
-They’re couch potatoes so they don’t require walking all the time(doesn’t mean you shouldn’t walk them)
-They’re very quiet generally so you shouldn’t have to worry about them barking all night long
-They are sweet and will form a bond with you over time
-They’re generally (not always) good with small children
-If you got an ex racer they would be one of the cheapest dogs (at most places ranging from $100-$200)
-Some ex racing greyhound adoption places do things like...
De-sex them, teach them lead manners, get them registered and basically do everything you would need ,which *would* cost tonnes of money, to get a new dog
-If you adopt an ex racer you could be saving a life as some of them are put down soon or immediately after racing
-they generally don’t jump up or find their ways under things
    Cons
-their prey drive (some of them don’t even have much of one and some places train them to be comfortable around other dogs)
-It’s hard to get them as puppies (only if you want a puppy)

They are gentle and affectionate. Sleep about 18 hrs a day. Track greyhounds are essentially housebroken out of the box , but need to be taught to go up and downstairs. They have probably have never seen cats or dogs other than greyhounds, so they take some time getting used to them. They are great family pets.

I rescued a grey hound about 6 months ago. He wasn’t a race dog but he was gonna be shot cause no one would take him. The video is true about them being lazy most the day but he does have his moments of activity. Kinda sad when your doing 37 mph in a Polaris ranger checking cattle and a black streak blows by you like it’s nothing. He’s not aggressive at all and the local stores love when I bring him in. He can get a little excited and rough around my nephew but after about 30 mins he calms down and becomes a pillow. He likes to play but mostly with feet and hands and my bed is no longer “my bed” it’s his bed since he pushes me off all the time. He is awesome with other animals. Any new animal he meets is his friend but sometimes he doenst realize skunks do not like big friends and well yeah he doenst like baths and keeping a grey hound in the tub while trying to wash him is a major choir😂 gotta be careful when sitting or laying down as well. He thinks he’s a giant lap dog and will happily lay on you😂

Help needed! I've always wanted a borzoi (russian wolfhound) but recently i've heard they're very hard to train and overly stubborn. So now I'm considering a greyhound. I'm also a little displeased with greyhounds because i don't like how the fur feels, and if they're much smaller than borzois. I'd prefer a big dog.

I got mine from Greyhound Pets of Arizona and do a lot of the meet and greats with my Greyhound. these meet and greats are also good for the dog as they get to hang out with there greyhound friends and meet new people. more often then not there will be a few Greys up for adoption at these meets. Once your husband gets the learn in treatment from a grey he will be sold ! I honestly feel that Greyhounds have very kind souls and you will just fall madly in love with them.

But me and my boyfriend saw the documentary "Running For Their Lives" and he changed his mind, he was so touched by it that he now is more active about discussing what kind of greyhound we would like! Mudhol Hound: origin in India, working hound, combines speed with stamina makes reasonable watchdog, catches and kills game, not overly friendly to strangers.
Rajapalayam Hound Origin India, big heavier and stronger than the Mudhol, used for boar-hunting, good guard dog, acts rather independently, is a one-person dog, more a trotter than galloper

Lots of them do because of all the stress that has been placed on their bones and joints through racing. Unfortunately they are also prone to bone cancer and it's one of the biggest killers of Greyhounds. :(

If you’re considering it you may want to do some research on the suggested timeline of your local rescue(s). If you’re in the US, there’s a surplus of greyhounds to adopt right now with the legislation in Florida and the closing of the last track in Alabama, but they’re predicting a shortage after those dogs are homed. The rescue I work with has been homing retired dogs from Alabama for years, and they don’t know where they’re going to get them anymore after all the current dogs are placed.

Or perhaps you do ? I have an idea for you. Watch paint the trail video's right here on youtube and get an inside look at the racing industry. What you will learn is most of what people have told you about the racing industry is just outright lies. I have never been to a greyhound race in my life so I am not pro or against I just hate people who lie.

  • @maaikesalter8211
    @maaikesalter8211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh dear, more false information. They did not come from the middle east. The hounds on the tombs, etc are more likely to be pharoah hounds or salukis.
Greyhounds also feel the heat badly and can over heat if over exercised.
The muzzles were for during the race. They run with mouths open to draw in more oxygen and any accidental contact can rip their very thin skin. Also the muzzle will stop injuries should they catch the lure.
The video itself, the most disturbing is the child hugging (with death grip) the hound around the neck. Dogs do not like this - some will put up with it, others won't and will warn. The body language of the poor hound in the video was not comfortable at all.
Bondi Vet, please be more vigilant with your videos and commentary.
