Great white encounter while spearfishing off Western Cape South Africa

  • First shore-dive of the year had a menacing but beautiful surprise waiting for my friends and I. Diving some shallow ledges, with awesome overhangs and cracks scattered around them, there were an abundance of gully sharks in each cave. the gully's were a bit more timid than usual not willing to leave the caves as id enter them. This unusual behaviour soon became clear, they were hiding.
    The white swam past just as I looked out into the open off the ledge. After reaching the surface I regrouped with my buddies, alerting them that we weren't alone. We continued to dive and moved a bit shallower, but the shark continued to circle and investigate what we were up to. We then called it quits and swam in before it got too curious.

    The Great White seemed fairly mellow....not showing signs of obvious change in swimming speed or posture and its moving slowly. Also, the shark is moderately sized for a GW. The thing that sucks though is that the diver seems to be on breathhold and not scuba. At some point you've got to get to the surface to take a breath....you better hope the boat is right there. I wouldn't feel comfortable floating on the surface with that shark looking up at me hidden in the depths...

    • @brunoprates862
      @brunoprates862 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@anonanon8974 Ethics. Spearfishing with a dive tank is just too easy. You can easily go down and kill all the bigger fish in your area. If many people did that, most of the big species would be gone from the coastal areas very quickly (that is already the case in many places around the world). That is why it is forbidden in most countries (not all).
      There are other reasons as well, but I guess this is the main one.
