Spearfishing South Africa - ASD "Poenskop"

  • The Black Musselcracker or Poenskop has to be one of the most unique and wily fish to target. These fish, endemic to South African waters, are mostly found in the deep, hiding in cavernous areas. Some of the best divers with the longest bottom times find the 'Poensie' an elusive target. In this episode we are back in the Transkei where Protea spearfisherman Jeremy Williams shows us how it's done. This is African Spearfishing Diaries.

    Great video, beaut location and admire your blokes bottom time. Disappointed to see the harvest of so many adult poensies. What happened to fishing for the future chaps? Raise your game!!

    Hey Barret, great footage and awesome clip! Regarding the Poensies, please include in your truly apt description that the species has a bag limit of one per person/diver per day. The video, while incredible, may leave the impression that this provision within the South African Marine Living Recources Act may have been contravened, as three are shot, all by the same diver, on what may or may not be the same day. Leaving the wrong impression isn't good for any of us, especially regarding endemic and "treasured" species like this one.

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terrance. Good point. I can assure you they were not all shot on the same day.
      As you can see the diver has a different wetsuit on on one of the dives. Good point though. It’s just did not make sense making it into three different days as the length of the production would not make sense. The 3 fish were actually shot on this spot over a weeks dive trip.

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anyone knows the diver they would know that no laws were broken.

      @@AfricanSpearfishingDiaries No problem, completely understood! And, please accept my apologies if I came across as accusatory Barret. Truly not my intention at all, towards you or Jeremy. I am just very wary of how things appear, and would not like your or Jeremy, or Garret or Guy's good name smeared over a misinterpretation/misrepresentation. Keep the videos coming, they are awesome to behold!!

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Terence Bellingan No problem whatsoever. I knew that. It’s just my experience that people like to make up there minds no matter what you say. I did think of putting it in the description but thought it better to just address it when it comes up so thank you. All good. People who know me know I don’t like posting stuff that is outside the rules of where I am diving and filming.

    Wow that was bloody amazing. South African's really do live up to the hype of beach launching! Thank you for taking on my request of showing process. It's the most professional footage I've ever seen. I'm going to share this to everyone to show how it's done!
    Do you guys ever have trouble pushing from the sand into the waves?
    I'm still learning how to do it and have installed a beach launch wheel to push it further into the water without dipping the car and risk getting bogged. It would be really cool to see how you guys get back in through the breaks in another video.

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Spearo Hey there. No problem. We generally use a boat and have enough divers to push that boat in the sand but yes dropping the boat in the right place is the trick and just comes with practise. Not sure what a beach launch wheel is.

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coming in is generally the easy part. You just need to watch getting stuck on sand banks

    Do you take shots without extending your arm fully very often? We’ve been having much worse viz the last 2 years and I find myself needing to take more shots without extending my arms but I feel my accuracy is very affected. You seemed to do fine. Maybe I just need more practice.

      Absolutely disgusted by the disregard for the Poensies. Complete barbarians. Those fish are endangered

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jean le Roux I’m Sorry you feel that way. First of all they are not endangered. They are listed as a vulnerable species which is very different to an endangered species so please know the difference. There was certainly no disregard for the species taken so I really am not sure what you are talking about? These 3 fish were shot overs period of 6 days. That’s 5 divers over a six day trip in an area that this fish abounds. All were eaten and enjoyed immensely by several families and all fish were taken well within the fisheries laws so please don’t get so emotional especially when you know nothing about what you speak of.

      African Spearfishing Diaries thanks to your reply. It’s good to see you taking some notice. For the record , I am a spears myself but have made a conscious decision to not target copper steenbras and poensie. You take for granted that a poensie of 25-40kgs is about 40-45 years old. Let that sink in. Where I dive ( Tsitsikamma) the population of poensie above 10kgs is practically zero. It was an abundant reef fish up until the 1980s, in this area. You should really do more research into the biology and sociology of the South African reef fish. If you want I can send some material - my cousin sponsored a Phd student at UPE to research the white and black musselcracker

    • @jeanleroux5367
      @jeanleroux5367 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      African Spearfishing Diaries sorry I should add - if you feel you absolutely must take reef fish, then don’t shoot the large breeding fish. I almost vomited when I saw the big poensies been taken. Shoot the ones that are sub 12kgs if you have too but leave the breeding fish ! Rather take pics of these old fish and focus on faster growing fish ( eg yellowtail , even Cob, Baardman, Leervis ). As I said , I Soest myself and love diving but we have to think about the preservation of the species of South African reef fish. They are indigenous to SA and slow growing.

    Hey gents. Beginner spearo. Interested in a couple things from your video (for the sake of learning).
    1. I see you don't always remove your snorkel on a dive. Is this just an experience thing? Like you're diving with a buddy and well within your breath hold?
    2. Hunting a poensie with a standard rail gun (non-roller). Is this a preference thing or using a specific tool for a specific job?
    Shot 🤙

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rory. Thanks for the questions. Not standard practice to keep the snorkel in the mouth. Jeremy has been Spearfishing for many years and started like that and has never changed. I’m not sure the roller gun was a available yet when we filmed this. It was some time ago but yes personal preference I suppose.

    Great video showcasing your skill. I'm a recreational fisherman and whilst I completely appreciate your ability to stalk and hunt at depth making clean kills, it saddens me greatly that you would specifically target a poensie, a fish that is under huge breading pressure. I would never dream of keeping a black musselcracker and have released all that I have ever landed. I'm not a greenie, and willingly target kob and galjoen but question why you have to shoot a red listed species?
    Open to constructive dialogue.

      Would be keen to hear the response to this too. I AM a greenie and a beginner spearo and always wonder when I see ous pulling out bag sizes of 10 to 15 snoek a piece 🤔 Can't imagine the justification for that. But interested to hear your take on poensie.

    Sad that so many poensies were taken... even IF they were not all on the same day and bag limits were adhered to... they are endangered and there is no way to justify killing so many of them. Sad....

    • @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries
      @AfricanSpearfishingDiaries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon. Thank you for your comments. As I have said before on this topic that the Poensies are listed as a vulnerable species they are not an endangered species. I agree that we should take care in how we harvest any fish but saying it is endangered is misleading.
